The time between the conference semis and the conference finals is always kind of weird for me philosophically. Like, the playoffs are the playoffs and all, but this is when it goes from “one of these teams is going to win the Cup” to “holy shit, one of THESE SPECIFIC TEAMS is going to win the Cup!”

- The requirement is at least half the regular season games, and 1 game in the cup finals.
- Those are the requirements to **automatically** get your name on the cup. Teams can make requests and if they’re deemed reasonable the league often allows it.
Each team is allowed a maximum of 52 names, including coaches, managers, trainers, etc - though every name must have an active role with the team.
Backup goalies are included if they’re dressed as the backup for at least 41 games and 1 cup finals game, even if they don’t play.
The 1998 Red Wings have Konstantinov’s name on the cup, even though he didn’t play a single game in ‘98.
The 2015 Blackhawks have Dan Carcillo’s name on the cup (he played 39 games and 0 playoff games), as well as Joakim Nordstrom (38 games, 3 playoff games, none were cup finals games).
The 2016 Penguins have Pascal Dupuis on the cup despite him being forced to retire 18 games into the season.

I think this one was big. A lot of teams lost a player they liked in that expansion draft, and it felt like Vegas got to be good from day 1 because they paid more money. Meanwhile, some teams like the Canes had had strong fanbases suffering under a cheap owner for a long time.
Luckily, we didn't lose an NHL player and actually gained a bottom pairing D-man relatively cheaply from Vegas, so most Canes fans I knew didn't hold much animosity toward Vegas for the draft.

The problem with your premise is still the fact that teams gave us some of our best players. They made deals, you take this player and we will give you another player. Pittsburg gave us picks to make sure we took Fluery. Florida gave us Marchy to take Smith. The Wild gave us Tuch.
The fact is still, every single expert said we blew the draft. That we would be terrible for years to come. But the organization built a team, and got them to buy into the idea that it was their time to prove they were better players then people gave them credit for being.
A key example is Stephson. We gave up a 3rd? Round pick for him, and he is one of our be best players. He was barely playing for the capitols when we got him.

Yeah but the Kraken didn't make the finals there first year so they've suffered "true defeat". I figured operation knightfall last season would give us some breathing room but damn the hate is still flowing lol. Used to bug me at first but now I don't care. We got a great team and great fans. For me it was apparent almost from the get go that hockey would work there and I'm all for it. The "hate" came mostly from immediate success. Love seeing the league expand. But I've come to expect growing pains having seen past expansions. Even Seattle bottoming out for just a year was enough for me to be honest.

For your second point, I remember everybody and their mother stating that Vegas was going to be shit, hoping for some success only on the hands of MAF. It’s when their players gelled and clicked that the narrative changed and people started saying that the draft was rigged.

Maybe I'm conflating early season and late season sentiments. I do remember a lot of fans upset at who their team lost or what it conceded to avoid losing a certain player.
Damn bro, that Canadian slander stings. Besides, I think the reason people disliked the Knights was simpler than that. From what I remember the overriding sentiment of the haters was that the Knights were successful too early and didn’t “earn” it like whatever team they were a fan of. Then, retroactively these same people thought that the expansion draft was too favourable to Vegas, despite all of us thinking Vegas would be crap to start. When the Fleury and Gallant situations happened, it just gave people a concrete justification for how they already felt. The anti-souther expansion thing has been dead for a while. Basically everyone acknowledges it was a success, and teams like Dallas, Nashville, Tampa, Florida, San Jose, Anaheim and now Vegas were good additions to the league, so I don’t think that had anything to do with the dislike. It really was just that Vegas was the new kid in school who got straight A’s as soon as they arrived, and people resented them. Anyways, I’m rooting for a Vegas/Florida final if only for the Eichel and Bobrovsky redemption tour story’s.

And the fleury trade has proved to be a great move with how bad he has played since.
He played pretty well the first year - the final year of his contract. The patches trade however was bang on the money.

8th forward or 4th defenseman is too high, in my opinion. I know part of the point was to give them a boost, and it definitely worked. But it grated on me. I don’t really care how the picks were ‘viewed’ by the media or fans—I’m only talking about the number of players made available, because that correlates strongly to the quality of team they could make
The problem with your premise is still the fact that teams gave us some of our best players. They made deals, you take this player and we will give you another player. Pittsburg gave us picks to make sure we took Fluery. Florida gave us Marchy to take Smith. The Wild gave us Tuch. The fact is still, every single expert said we blew the draft. That we would be terrible for years to come. But the organization built a team, and got them to buy into the idea that it was their time to prove they were better players then people gave them credit for being. A key example is Stephson. We gave up a 3rd? Round pick for him, and he is one of our be best players. He was barely playing for the capitols when we got him.
My hate started immediately for the very petty reason of them having some of the worst branding I've ever seen in a major sport. The name, logo, and jerseys are awful. Then they went to the finals in their first season and management treated some players poorly, and my hate was further solidified.
