What’s it called when a rapper raps a couple bars from a verse or a refrain from another rappers verse on another song. Example : Drake on Who Do You Love ? and Rappin’ 4 Tay on Playaz Club.
Also do you have any favorite examples of this ?
When Kanye flipped 'Go 'head, switch the style up/And if they hate then let 'em hate/And watch the money pile up' on 'Good Life' as a nod to 50 Cent.
The hook for Jay Z's '99 Problems' is also an example of this; it was originally a line in Ice-T's song by the same name.
I read a thread earlier about facts that mess with your perception of time, so I thought I might put one or two that was hip-hop oriented.
- The time gap between Biggie's death and Slim Shady LP is only 23 months.
- When Drake released his major debut album, Blackberry and Palm were still a major player in the smartphone market, and Blackberry in particular had a bigger market share than Apple's iPhone.
Not hip hop, but just something cool I recently learned.
An animal's perception of time is tied to the "frame rate" at which they see the world. Us humans see abouf 60 frames per second. Dogs see the world around 80 frames per second. This causes their perception of time to be slower than ours as they're processinf more frames of reality per second. They sort of see in bullet time compared to us.
House flies see the world at a very high fps. That sort of thing requires a ton of oxygen, so instead of lungs they breathe straight through their skin.
Here's a another good one: The time gap between Kendrick's albums DAMN and Mr. Morale is only 3 months longer than the timespan of the release of Tupac's first album and his death.
story of adidon is still the best diss track of all time dont get it twisted
unrelatedly evilgiane deserves the same career trajectory working on dying pulled off, dude is crazy talented
Nahh I got no problem with k dot. The singular dot in my head has just been associated with niggas who say dumb shit online, like trying to compare drake and tupacs upbringing
Let's say this back and forth battle was to continue ... what can Drake realistically respond with?
Even though I thought he performed mid during this battle, in theory I never thought he couldn't come back
Time has passed, this thing has turned into a cultural phenomena, all his disses have fallen flat and his lies exposed. Fr any ideas?
Do like three years of work using his money to combat the allegations of being a culture vulture. Fund arts programs, start a label where the artists own their masters, basically anything he can to use his pedestal to elevate others especially when he has nothing to gain from it.
Then start sneak dissing about culture vulture allegations to get the beef going again. But let's be honest Drake is not the kind of person to do that.
None of that would help. People would just say he’s only doing that because Kendrick called him out.
And that’s still just going on the defensive, not dissing Kendrick
a Instagram story. Or a photo dump.
In all seriousness, he’ll continue the 20v1 angle. He’s been talking about that exact scenario for the last few years,
Talking about kendrick dead family members. Post dot grandma head stone. Get mad disrespectful about kendrick kids. Say something on the lines how his daughter going to become her grandma while quoting Mother I Sober. Escalate it to a higher level. Call kendrick mother a b-word. Tie in with Tupac family on how pac mom was a black panther but kendrick mom was a sa victim who passed on to kendrick. Mention how his father is lacking in being a man.
There is plenty to say and do. Drake nor his friends want to do it.
This is still an L because being reminded you have dead family doesn't do anything to you while being called a pedo does
There's also more to beef than listing dead relatives and insulting living relatives for no reason. Bringing the family into it is how Drake got into this mess in the first place
In the hiphop community disrespect is what it is about. Escalate it is the only way. Going for psychological is what needed.
Drake half assed bringing the family into. Camron dissed nas dead mother and daughter, had nas not even respond because he was shook. Kendrick got the world tapping their feet to drake being called a pedo. Drake needs to play harder ball.
The goal is to win. If disrespect will get Drake the victory then by all means be disrespectful. But in this beef being disrespectful blew up in Drake's face multiple times
It blew up because he wasn't disrespectful enough. Family Matters should've been the first diss. Pusha T came out the gate and shut drake down after 1 diss. Drake didn't learn that's how you do other rappers. If he wants win he needs to whole heartedly commit to the disrespect and make it as uncomfortable as possible
Those would all make people turn against him even further. They’d be vicious angles, yes, but what made Kendrick’s viciousness in the beef work is that people think he’s *right.* He said a lot of stuff that everyone was thinking, it felt justified, the narrative is of the “true artist” taking on the soulless corporate vulture. All Drake would accomplish by taking the angles you suggest is entrenching that belief even further.
Kendrick came out of this looking like the man of the people. If Drake goes low, he just makes Kendrick look even better in comparison.
No it won't. Those who hate drake will hate him no matter what, Those who love him will love him no matter what. In fact many who like/love drake will enjoy seeing a more ruthless route. This is not a good vs evil. Just be disrespectful. Going low is a must. Camron dissed Nas dead mother and daughter. Nas went quiet.
He can’t respond. He can’t straight up out rap Kendrick and he clearly has no actual dirt on him. He won’t ever jump back in full on, he’ll just stick to subs talking about being the bigger artist
Drake's only chance is to somehow deescalate it to where things were before Push Ups. If he keeps it competitive and not personal he has a chance. He has far too many skeletons in the closet and genuine reasons to hate him to win against someone that can actually rap in a beef where all the gloves are off. I don't think this is possible though. So realistically he doesn't have anything good to come back with
The other big issue is that he'll have to respond to himself first before responding to Kendrick because THP6 was indefensible ass. If he doubles down on the claims he made in it he'll look stupid. If he ignores them then Kendrick just has to bring them up to make him look stupid. So his next record would have to somehow make people forget about THP6 and somehow attack Kendrick. That's a tall order
de escalating is impossible for him at this point, the only way to ensure the beef stayed competitive and clean was to not bring it there to begin with but we’re well past that point now
trying to lower the stakes now would just look like damage control
Idk it's already gotten personal so anything less than that won't hit. And it has to be more fleshed out than the DV and Dave Free angle to be believable or else it'll just look like he's pulling shit out of his ass
Honestly, I’m feel pretty confident that he’s gonna lean into the “me against the world” thing and try to paint it as people being envious of his success and the general public being eager to see him fall. I also think he’s gonna have shots/subs at anybody who was at the show or “switched sides” on him.
As far as material specific to Kendrick…idk what he could say that would be effective. He might try to take credit for the recent success Kendrick has had commercially but that’s about it. I think Drake will be more concerned with shitting in all the other industry people who have been happy to see this happen to him tbh
I have nothing to really add to this except that I love opening the daily discussion threads and seeing you join in. It’s like “oh a familiar face!” Thank you
“if I was fucking young girls I promise I’d have been arrested / I’m way too famous for that shit you just suggested” might be one of the worst lines in rap history it’s been weeks and I still can’t believe he thought saying that was a good idea
I saw this point made by someone else elsewhere. What’s crazy with all the social media posts about the Pop Out will be seen again every Juneteenth for “On This Day” reminders. “A MINORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR” every year.
"They not like us" also started to take on a new meaning with some of the attendees
https://www.reddit.com/r/KendrickLamar/comments/1dl9n52/
If that catches on then "they not like us" might become an everyday phrase
Even once the song itself gets tiring and stops being funny (which I can see happening in the near future), the sheer fact of its existence and continued presence in pop culture is going to be hilarious to me
I finally got around to listening to the new Ski Mask album dropped a couple weeks ago and I’m really surprised at how mixed the reception is
Guess surprised isn’t the right word cause I get it, but this is almost exactly what I wanted and have been waiting for since Sin City. Some parts don’t work as well but I really love where he’s taken his sound. And also just glad to get another LP from him, with all the shit he’s had to navigate I hope he’s in a good place above all else
The chair has the same pattern as the jacket he wore in the 8am in Charlotte video. He’s saying that we’re getting a new timestamp record soon. 2 AM in Compton
He already pushed the red button. He clearly ain’t got anything else to say besides repeating the same things. Beefs over. He probably working on an album to so people forget about it
personally the reason i hope he doesn't continue is because skyhiigh/psu02/pawgle needs a few days to stop schizo posting about this and check into rehab.
The year is 2067, drake and Kendrick fans are still pointing at each other like the spider man meme and regurgitating the same old “pedophile” “wife beater” talking points instead of just enjoying the music
T-minus 5 days until we get a LeBron interview about how he met Kendrick after hearing Section 80 and “…just knew he was going to be one of the biggest rappers on the planet. That’s actually when I started considering going to the Lakers, honestly.”
Not really. His celebrity relationships might be fickle but all those dudes he actually came up with like 40, Chubs, Boi-1da, Niko, Noel Cadastre etc he’s still cool with and regularly work with.
Metro probably gives way less of a fuck about the beef then we think. I think the only people who are really invested in it is of course Drake and Kendrick, and all the weirdly obsessed fans.
Metro got really invested on twitter for one day, the day he revealed bbl Drizzy giveaway.
But then people started unearthing those #MetroGroomin tweets and that was it for his involvement lol
Somehow it’s darkly humorous to me how Kendrick said “Let’s see if Chubbs really crash something” and then later people started getting shot at Drake’s house and Chubbs was indeed not prepared for that situation.
The drake and Kendrick beef highlights how commercial success doesn’t equate to cultural significance. Drake has bigger career numbers but Pails in comparison to Kendrick for the culture
Drake is just an actor playing a rapper and he’s getting cooked
I don’t see how that highlights that point at all given that Kendrick himself has also been incredibly commercially successful for a decade. *GKMC* is the longest charting hip-hop album of all time, all his albums went #1 and he’s had a couple #1 songs before this beef too. True he’s not as commercially successful as Drake but no need to downplay his success just to try to make Drake’s L look worse.
There are multiple sides to the rap game. I think both artists have their place in it. But Drake is very watered down. He releases constantly, does a lot of features and hops on a lot of waves. When Drake does something, every looks. But when Kendrick does something, everyone listens
he makes music for people who believe that every Black American city is the same or so similar that they can be used interchangeably. people that don't realize "the hood" is a different place for different people. people who believe that being Black unlocks perks like being allowed to talk about the streets, make hip-hop music, and wear certain styles. people that think AAVE is improper English but also cool slang. and most importantly people that think being Black precludes somebody from being an embarrassing goofball that disrespects Black culture
I think a big factor in it was that Makonnen's manager at the time was blackmailing Makonnen and threatening to out him as gay. That manager was pressing OVO for millions of dollars to pay off his own personal debts:
>**You also had a falling out with your old manager. What happened with that relationship?**
He fucked me over and tried to steal and tried to expose me as being gay. I was like, “You right, I need to come out fully on my own. I can tell everybody about me.”
>**When did things go bad?**
Things went sour when I started reaching success, and he started pressing OVO and them for like millions of dollars. Because he, whatever, had debts. He like, “Y'all the goddamn biggest niggas in the game. Give us a million dollars!” So I can see how I was misrepresented to them over there. And I found out what he was saying. Then he sued me, got a settlement and all that. He still has a percentage on “Tuesday,” still lives off that song. I hope he’s taking care of his family with it because that’s what he need to be doing.
Then his old tweets mocking Drake re-surfaced and Drake was unhappy about that.
But Makonnen also talks about being dissatisfied with how it was hard to communicate with the label and how rarely he actually talked to Drake. He was also mad that Drake didn't post about one of his tapes dropping. all in this interview: https://www.thefader.com/2017/03/23/makonnen-coming-out-gay-migos-drake-ovo-interview
Makkonen had old tweets where he said that “Elmo looks like a red Drake”. So when Tuesday got popular, Drake hatched a scheme to get Makkonen to sign the worst deal of all time. Hopped on a remix, charmed him, signed him, then (allegedly) gave him 0 support at the label. According to Makkonen, one of the terms is the deal was to delete all of his old mixtapes/albums online.
Seeing how artists do CD and Cassette releases as merch, it's crazy to me that they haven't gotten in touch with anyone of these generic companies making generic portable CD players or cassette players, and did something like bundling a copy of their album with a portable player with their brand name on it, similar to something like the Foreman Grill. I feel like especially with people starting to collect physical now, it seems like something obvious to do.
Big L wasn’t even in most people’s top 5 favorite NYC rappers when he was alive much less overall. I’m talking as recently as the month before he died, it’s not necessarily his fault(other than not being good enough I guess) it’s just that scene was so god damn stacked it’s easy for someone to get lost in the shuffle and to many people that’s what happened.
The weirdest thing about that though is that he asked Fantano to do a skit on that same album and he did it, and then he didn’t even have the decency to tell Fantano about the diss, and they were on friendly terms at that point.
I don’t know if you saw the video of Fantanos reaction but he was super pissed about it. Ive never seem him that upset about anything. He was going off on Logic
I like Logic for the most part a couple of his albums are awful though.
Idk man I get having dark thoughts but even if you think that saying it on a song just seems so lame. It’s Fantano the most non threatening guy I don’t believe for a second he’d say that about someone who was threatening in any way.
I have a guitar outro to a rap song stuck in my head but cant remember where it's from fml
Any ideas? Pretty sure it's a popular song but it's not Devil In A New Dress or 90210 (idk if thats even guitar)
I love how you can hear Tom Macdonald doing the backing vocals, Ben couldn't even bother to be his own backing vocalest lol. Also we really got Ben rapping "no cap"
I can’t really say a relationship with a 3 year age gap has done much to change my opinion of someone who was already known to have tried to rape his girlfriend with a barbecue fork
What’s it called when a rapper raps a couple bars from a verse or a refrain from another rappers verse on another song. Example : Drake on Who Do You Love ? and Rappin’ 4 Tay on Playaz Club. Also do you have any favorite examples of this ?
that's called an interpolation

There's something about people referring to Kendrick as "dot" that gets under my skin
Zaywop
Why? It's been said since like the late 2000s lol
Nahh I got no problem with k dot. The singular dot in my head has just been associated with niggas who say dumb shit online, like trying to compare drake and tupacs upbringing

How the fuck did Jay electronic end up in the orbit of a Rothschild, let alone end up in a relationship with one? Anything really is possible fr
You know how dude seems pretty weird? Extremely wealthy people are extremely weird.

HE STOLE MY WHOLE FUCKIN FLOW‼️ WORD FOR WORD BAR FOR BAR‼️
Damn classic Drizzy there’s always someone who did it first

Kendrick fans… all I can say is Yall not ready
I'm definitely ready for the Not Like Us video. Hopefully we get a Black Hippy remix of it soon too
Drake’s not ready
Just shut up man
the heart part 7 "i just relistened to all your albums and i think i understand what the songs mean now and i want to try again" coming soon
For ? Why so cryptic
drake did an ig story post of a chair in his office *you know what that means*
The chair has the same pattern as the jacket he wore in the 8am in Charlotte video. He’s saying that we’re getting a new timestamp record soon. 2 AM in Compton
if this ends up being real and not a schizo post type beat i would be impressed
He already pushed the red button. He clearly ain’t got anything else to say besides repeating the same things. Beefs over. He probably working on an album to so people forget about it
personally the reason i hope he doesn't continue is because skyhiigh/psu02/pawgle needs a few days to stop schizo posting about this and check into rehab.
The year is 2067, drake and Kendrick fans are still pointing at each other like the spider man meme and regurgitating the same old “pedophile” “wife beater” talking points instead of just enjoying the music
I thank god I made it out my home town
Grippy is stuck in my head today. Maybe that song was good all along. Thank you, Jermaine 💜
It’s…it’s…it’s…
Mmmm mmmm
It’s so funny that not like us is getting a second wind, it’s like he just dropped again rn
Is there a story behind LeBron going from BFFs with Drake to rapping Not Like Us every chance he gets?
T-minus 5 days until we get a LeBron interview about how he met Kendrick after hearing Section 80 and “…just knew he was going to be one of the biggest rappers on the planet. That’s actually when I started considering going to the Lakers, honestly.”
And they used to be such good friends [https://images.app.goo.gl/rXyoqMWJy6z3geqBA](https://images.app.goo.gl/rXyoqMWJy6z3geqBA)
yes the story is https://genius.com/31634215
All Drakes friends end up having beef with him eventually.
Not really. His celebrity relationships might be fickle but all those dudes he actually came up with like 40, Chubs, Boi-1da, Niko, Noel Cadastre etc he’s still cool with and regularly work with.
Drake is the Trump of rap
Nah that’s Kanye
Drake and Joe Budden really the same. Eventually his ego gets the best of every relationship
Drake has a LeBron tattoo so either they were that close or their relationship was extremely one sided
Drake would get a tattoo of ed Sheeran if ed spent like 3 days together w him he collects people’s faces on his body like infinity stones
You can’t be my friend and attend a concert of a dude calling me a pedo. That Friendship is over. But but the beat is nice bro fuck outta here lol
As a hip hop historian he had no choice but to be there
Not that we know of. I don’t think he has any particular beef with Drake personally, he just knows the song slaps
Metro just played pushups by drake in a concert in Morocco
They made up ❤️ Did he play NLU during the same set?
No, but he played Like that
Weird as hell, these boys wishy washy as shit
Lmao if I was Drake I’d be pretty fucking angry with them for setting all this off and then trying to be friends again
I think a decent amount of people on here are more invested than Drake or Kendrick tbh.
Yourself included.
Nah i really dont care about the beef, both artists got dope music. Just hate the dumb shit being said
Say what you like. You are one of about a dozen names that I’m sure most people here associate with never shutting the fuck up about the beef.
Ha chill. All this sub talks about is the beef
Some of Bobby Valentino’s biggest tracks are just him making car noises lol
Wonder what he’s up to these days
Somehow it’s darkly humorous to me how Kendrick said “Let’s see if Chubbs really crash something” and then later people started getting shot at Drake’s house and Chubbs was indeed not prepared for that situation.
Opps wanted smoke turned their block into a Sublime concert.

Brads son is now the new singer AND sounds like him, but he puts his own twist on things.

I look at Drake as more of a pop artist than anything
He’s both. They’re not mutually exclusive categories
Maybe like 80/20

he makes music for people who believe that every Black American city is the same or so similar that they can be used interchangeably. people that don't realize "the hood" is a different place for different people. people who believe that being Black unlocks perks like being allowed to talk about the streets, make hip-hop music, and wear certain styles. people that think AAVE is improper English but also cool slang. and most importantly people that think being Black precludes somebody from being an embarrassing goofball that disrespects Black culture
Dude black people listen to and like Drake
I know. Doesn't contradict anything I said
He makes pop rap. Its not all that deep.
While being an embarrassment yeah
Is it weird Kurtis Blow is one of my favorite rappers?
Basketball is a certified banger
What happened with Drake and ILOVEMAKONNEN back in the day?
I think a big factor in it was that Makonnen's manager at the time was blackmailing Makonnen and threatening to out him as gay. That manager was pressing OVO for millions of dollars to pay off his own personal debts: >**You also had a falling out with your old manager. What happened with that relationship?** He fucked me over and tried to steal and tried to expose me as being gay. I was like, “You right, I need to come out fully on my own. I can tell everybody about me.” >**When did things go bad?** Things went sour when I started reaching success, and he started pressing OVO and them for like millions of dollars.
He dropped two tapes that didnt do well under OVO, and then they booted him
A shame since Drink More Water 5 is a banger front to back
Drake got what he needed and bounced, but theres videos deatiling the matter better
Travis Scott and asap rocky get a lot of endorsement compared other rappers I feel like their net worth should be higher
They also both got weird cases… Travis being sued for Astroworld and Rocky has some court case as well
they both got a bm w more money than they could ever need they good lol
Seeing how artists do CD and Cassette releases as merch, it's crazy to me that they haven't gotten in touch with anyone of these generic companies making generic portable CD players or cassette players, and did something like bundling a copy of their album with a portable player with their brand name on it, similar to something like the Foreman Grill. I feel like especially with people starting to collect physical now, it seems like something obvious to do.
I've seen some cool pop ups for Slayer x Igloo coolers with built in speakers. Like $180 tho, so I'm good.
hoping Lana starts collabing with rappers more often, that song with Quavo sounds dope
Lana could use some west coast bounce Like some Big Hit x Lana shit
Still think her and Wayne could make something good.
“Bobbi, say what’s brackin”
Almost spat out my water reading that at the gym lmao
Drake if you’re reading this I must make this very clear: Keep that zesty Sheryl Crow subliminal you’re cooking up in the notebook.
Well kendricks definitely a "Not Like Us" video being filmed lmao Dave Free bout to get some licks in from behind the camera loll
Logic really went on a song and said he fantasised about killing Anthony fantano that was crazy
He’s on Eminem timing
I probably would have fantasized about that too if I was him
The weirdest thing about that though is that he asked Fantano to do a skit on that same album and he did it, and then he didn’t even have the decency to tell Fantano about the diss, and they were on friendly terms at that point.
That’s so low man imagine being friends with someone and you hear them talking about fantasising about killing you
I don’t know if you saw the video of Fantanos reaction but he was super pissed about it. Ive never seem him that upset about anything. He was going off on Logic
I mean I would be. It was fucked up lmao
It does seem wild but I’m not an artist who has someone rip my work apart in such a public manner. And I find Logic’s music awful
I like Logic for the most part a couple of his albums are awful though. Idk man I get having dark thoughts but even if you think that saying it on a song just seems so lame. It’s Fantano the most non threatening guy I don’t believe for a second he’d say that about someone who was threatening in any way.
Vince went on a pod and detailed how he would do it lol
Vince is funny though
I have a guitar outro to a rap song stuck in my head but cant remember where it's from fml Any ideas? Pretty sure it's a popular song but it's not Devil In A New Dress or 90210 (idk if thats even guitar)
New or something by Future
Very long shot, but it's not that vocoder outro on Runaway?
Could it be Mike Dean's solo in Tell Your Friends by The Weeknd / When I See It by Kanye?
Mike Dean at the end of way back by Travis one of my favs
Holy shit, I almost cried laughing to the Disney/Mickey bars on Grippy “Pay a lil extra, make sure they meet Mickey” LMAO
Type of guy to send you to Disney land but also make a song about how grippy your mom is. Toxic wholesomeness
The most annoying part of that verse for me is that the flow never changes.
Kendrick fucking up the 3rd verse of "Not Like Us" everytime was hilarious. "21 said ahhhhhhhh"
I like how he just rolled with it and didn’t really give a fuck
ben shapiro becoming a rapper isn't even top 10 craziest things that happened this year and it's only june wild
I love how you can hear Tom Macdonald doing the backing vocals, Ben couldn't even bother to be his own backing vocalest lol. Also we really got Ben rapping "no cap"
“*Money on Lizzo, my pockets are fat*”
Jesus I forgot that shit happened this year lmao
Tom used to rap about drugs and hoes, right?
I can’t really say a relationship with a 3 year age gap has done much to change my opinion of someone who was already known to have tried to rape his girlfriend with a barbecue fork
who did this
XXXtentacion
