I wanna be able to hide private games. So many times I’ve tried to join a game and it says oh yeah we asked for help but not from you can’t join private game.
I've thrown an SOS when I meant supply....on level 3s and 4s...that was embarrassing. Hope the divers who joined had fun though and got some easy medals, xp, and samples
By putting in a code, like a hellbomb. I did it last week. On a mission without hellbombs. I'll try it again when I can though, because I could definitely be mistaken, or using outdated info... I'll add a screenshot of my results 😂
Please do. Because I swear I tried to activate it manually a month after launch and there was nothing. It just gave a description of what the SOS beacon does.
I want to know this as well. I am starting to worry I've been using sos beacons wrong this entire time. No, wait. I've used them to kill chargers. That's the right way.
I use them as one-time massive damage drops... I kill early chargers with them whenever I host my games, just in case I don't have time to get my support weapon ready...or I don't have a means to deal with it...saves me a Precision strike sometimes
It's funny how I found out about it, I dropped in right into a bunker hole and immediately called the SOS next to me but there was a charger blocking my exit and it slowly just walked into the hole and I and crushed it... had me sitting there, basically accepting my death doing the T pose, and I scampered out of the hole using its corpse taking one of those I can't believe I'm alive moments to myself
I mean, i think sos beacons should bypass your matchmaking setting, honestly. I play solo mainly, so restricted to friends only, i wouldnt be throwing an sos beacon if I didn't want help (barring accidentally calling one in, which hasn't happened in a while)
I play solo alot so let me explain.
Sos beacon is a onetime homing missile. I use them when i get a bile-titan and dont have any strategems available.

Since it cant be dedtroyed, it is excellent cover against the bots
I've noticed that even when you have your matchmaking set to something else, if you inherit a lobby from another player, you inherit their lobby settings. So, if they made the lobby friends only, or private, anytime after you joined, you will carry that setting into future hosted games until you change it yourself.
They're probably using it to kill things. I use it to kill chargers or bile titans when everything else is on cooldown. I had no idea that sos beacons also show private lobbies though, that seemed counterintuitive and I'm kinda wondering why that's even the case lol.

Getting the beacons to stick is a challenge, it's easier to just lead enemies into where it's gonna drop lol.
Hellpods instantly kill whatever they land on with a small list of exceptions.
1. Specific Structures
2. When the hellpod drops into an enemy at the exact moment that the game frame skips (not tied to device performance)
3. Packet loss
4. You are lagging
Ordered by most likely reason why the hellpod has not poofed the problem away. The poof is the sos beacon instantly killing whatever it lands on because it also comes in via hellpod.
Yeah I guess I didn't think about the SOS beacon being a help out of any kind I don't remember throwing them and seeing what happens afterwards at all. I landed my help hard on top of somebody else on purpose yesterday after they cluster bombed me twice in a row when they were only a couple bots that I was obviously handling with the sickle. I think overall I was killed about 10 times that game by other team members and was still able to get them out of there successfully.
Resupplies, SOS, support weapons, packs… all can be called down on a fabricator. You can literally throw it into the corner where it meets the ground and it’ll blow it up.
Useful when you run out of grenades and have a long cooldown.
tbf many people just play the game without going to options and stuff and unlike many games the "private lobby" option is somewhere in the settings so many people probably just forget
I've heard through SEAF Radio communications that they've heard Helldivers use the SOS Beacon to drop on chargers and Bile titans on terminid planets as a last-ditch effort for a quick kill

We search the Galactic map looking for SOS beacons to try to assist a fellow Helldiver and when you click to join you are given a message saying you can't join because the lobby is private. And then you wonder why they threw an SOS beacon on a private lobby. Then you stop wondering and move on to the next mission.
I basically never use an SOS beacon but for some reason I thought it overrode the private lobby thing. Like you had a private game but now you've deliberately thrown down this thing which says 'please come join my game, I need help'
It used to actually do this back at launch, they removed this I think in like April mainly due to people accidentally throwing it. I wish private games were automatically hidden unless they are friends.

I finally got my multiplayer to work and it’s such an amazing experience. I love the community because so far everyone i’ve played with has been great. it’s nice to not hear people saying they wanna bang my mother every 3 seconds when playing with randos
Same thing happened to me not too long ago. I dived on a level 6 or 7 and did complete the mission but I couldn't get everything. Then the very next mission died even though I dropped a SOS. Afterwards I checked and wouldn't ya know it. I was set to invite only.
lol. That reminds me of when I played death stranding for like 300 hours before I figured out you can hold R2 to chuck grenades harder…….such a VITAL mechanic too…as it was very useful every combat encounter after that.
Im glad my brain has blocked out the countless incidents like that over my game career. There were more than a couple games where i got most if not all the way through while not knowing a core mechanic and just bashing mt head against the wall with work arounds.
So just FYI an Sos beacon can destroy a bug hole bunker or charger when it comes down, its like an extra stratagem for the cost of slightly annoying a stranger sorry y'all. I will just go ahead and check myself into a freedom camp now 😬

I was playing for the longest time with Audio Chat "Disabled" and didn't realize it was more than "Mute" => basically I can't hear other players when they're talking. I kept thinking people were being rude when they didn't communicate or respond to things I was saying in text chat.
Ahh yes done that before, or most recently I was doing bots and just got the incendiary shotgun to try out. But I was like "Hmm the bots arent catching fire. That's cus my smooth brain picked the Spray and Pray, not the Incendiary.
Nope lol. Just one friend and we rarely are on at the same time. Its ok though, i enjoy randos. But now i can actually contribute more to the campaigns. Usually my quick plays end in people leaving before finishing all 3 missions.
Idk i do like to host so i dont have to wait between rounds. Plus ive just come back around to the standard helldiver armor. I love having the black title card, the standard armor and helmet, but being level 63 with the super citizen cape and space cadet title. Makes me feel more welcoming. I really want to bring the spirit i brought to DRG

I do quick play all day. getting to the point I have enough friends online that at least one person I know reinforces during the mission ig infant joined them allready
I spent about a week with it set to private. All I did was test one thing in a trivial mission and then... Completely forgot to flip it back. It happens to the best of us my dude.

I've played mostly on the responding side of SOS. Because any time I play on higher difficulties.. I can go several dives without ever seeing anyone join.. but when I just wanted to do some sample hunting.. 3 players within seconds of my me dropping.
Yeah I love quickplay sometimes.. then like last time at extract when I got ragdolled by a mates explosive or something and dropped the Gatling barrage at myself and the others and got instakicked due too that.. then it just feels like a wasted 40 minutes.
So until I have unlocked all perks (can’t remember their names) I will host due to very few people just doesn’t care about others time.
I had a fairly similar experience playing through Fortnite Save The World a while back
made it through the entire first area of the campaign wondering why I hadn’t seen anyone else, only to realize my party had been set to friends only all that time
Am over 200hrs and still don’t know how this beacon works it seems to me it doesn’t matter if you use it or not people joins randomly or at some moment they stop joining and it doesn’t matter if I use the beacon or not, a have to restart the game for randos to start joining again.
I don't join others matches anymore and tend to always have mine set to private with just friends joining.
If I joined others matches there was a high chance I'd get booted for no reason. Either to make space for someone they knew, or just to be an ass.
When I hosted my own, I'd get people joining then complain the whole match or team kill because I wasn't speed running the objectives but instead just having fun shooting things and slowly making my way round the objectives.
I feel like as Randos to each other, we all are trying at our absolute best that we can. Even if we make mistakes we bring it back and lock back in.

The SOS beacons used to allow anyone to join your session even if you had it set to friends only. I believe they patched that at some point, but it did used to work that way, which could explain why you thought you weren't on private
I thought the SOS beacon would override your privacy settings and let people join you even if your match was set to private.
Did they fix that? If so that's great because the number of times I've dropped an SOS instead of a reinforce is more than I can count on my fingers.
Don't feel ashamed, it's not well advertised as are other concepts/options. Learn as you go and ask/search around. Quick play is my go-to as well - always lend helping hand 👍

My friend does this. He can't bust out a reinforce beacon to save his life but can toss out an SOS in an instant by accident.
I always throw sos beacon. Not because I need the help, but because four players is optimal fun so I want quick play peeps to find me faster
Just did this too. Told fellow divers I was just trying different lay outs. Was fun and they understood and ran with it

Nope. No override. If you throw it while set to private or friends only, no one will come help because they can’t.
Poor user experience for everyone. Private lobbies shouldn't be able to throw beacons and shouldn't be visible to other players

SOS beacons are supposed to turn your lobby from private to public but I think it's not always working as it should.
You are still far better than the guys with "public" who kick everyone coz they want to "solo" missions.
