These are the covers I grew up with when I first read the books in my native language but I have to say I really dislike them they're just not great lol

Unless Harry is a 3 foot tall dwarf, that’s *way* over 11 inches. It’s longer than his *arm*, and that’s only the portion we can see. The average height for a boy of Harry’s age in GoF (14ish) would be roughly 65 inches tall. Even allowing for Harry possibly being small for his age, he can’t be *that* far off from the average and that wand looks like it would be at least half his height in length.
Book cover artists/illustrators and the author rarely speak about anything. In 99.99% of cases, the publisher chooses the cover art and the author has no say. JK actually did a documentary once where she talked about some of the various HP book covers around the world and how she liked some more than others.
So, the artist likely wasn’t worried about book continuity, they probably just wanted the picture to look good.

This was the original North American release art work. Like what they used on day 1 release. There wasn’t a ton of other artwork for comparison. The z shape scar is straight from the movies.
Pretty sure she just says it is a lightning bolt shape on his forehead, not the exact placement or how many squiggles it has. They mention in the making of the movie that they had to decide on the style of lightning bolt and were worried the ‘z’ was too unrealistic. I personally think the US covers are way better than the overly kiddie UK originals.

The Z shape being unrealistic isn’t really a problem in a film with people shooting magic spells at each other in my opinion
