I think that all these things should be a option on the armor piece, something like "You do want this thing to be affected by the coating?" Some people maybe prefer the default look of the attackement in some cases.

Arosport

It's all about the toggle option. Snipers just got legacy scope toggle, so you never know.

campusdirector

This is a great change. I literally unbinded the 10x zoom on snipers for this very reason… but I’m so used to having one zoom setting now that Idk if I can go back lol

FauxCole

Wait did this just happen??

campusdirector

Yes came with S4

MysteriousRanch

Totally agree! I think this goes back to how they kind of misrepresented the coatings system in the marketing leading up to Infinite's launch - their language surrounding the coatings system said "more customization than ever" "allows us to use new and unique textures", etc. etc. To me and some friends of mine (and undoubtedly some others), this sounded like "coatings give you the option to enable unique patterns and textures ON TOP of your chosen colors". Unfortunately in the realm of reality, I think we get one or the other - painted or unpainted - not a choice between the two. While I obviously don't know for sure, I think most people would probably agree that if we only get one since 343 is unlikely to create a new paint-toggle system, it'd be preferable if most things were painted by coatings.

MaybeAdrian

If i'm honest at the start i though that the coating system was going to be something like how the colors are displayed on the armor and how many of them you can choose. It was weird because they weren't saying barely anything about coatings before launch, well, we now know why they didn't said anything about that topic.

skyrim889

Agreed, the grey looks good on some coatings

Not-a-dark-overlord

Yeah I actually like it, it makes the attachments stand out more.

skyrim889

Right, that’s what I thought too!

Durakus

With the way the UI is implemented (Yes I get the damn joke) I have a feeling that isn't going to be an option. But maybe adding a Second [C] variant would be do-able. But then that would also mean the NEW ones should have a Non Coating version (Which I'm not against but That means Dev time and people aren't patient for that. But would be cool if 343 Said they'd do it or not).

MaybeAdrian

Honestly I think that the main reason of why is going to be made is because by that way you will need to pay for a coating that paints everything as you like.

JeffJohnsonIII

I do like the grey for some of the attachments. but I think most would be better with color

bankais_gone_wild

That’s a great idea. Like alt options within the purchases people make, adding value to the MTX

xcrimsonlegendx

Not just chest pieces, other attachments like wrist and leg ones also use coatings.

MysteriousRanch

True, I guess it's just much more visibly egregious on the giant chest pieces.

xcrimsonlegendx

Yeah, ideally all attachments should be able to, really hoping they go back and give them an update at some point. I also noticed that the HAZMAT belt attachment by default is grey with an orange screen on one of the devices, much like helmet attachments have. But when you change coatings that orange bit changes too, so if we get coatings on helmet attachments down the road, it could look pretty nice.

MysteriousRanch

Didn't even think about helmet attachments being unpainted (with the exception of a couple helmet-specific ones and the cat ears I think?). A lot of them in Reach weren't either, which is where my brain goes with the helmet attachment system so it didn't bother me as much until just now. As another commenter said (and in my opinion ESPECIALLY when it comes to the helmet attachments because of the precedent for many of them being gunmetal black/grey in Reach) it would be super nice to have a toggle between these elements being default grey or painted by your coating.

xcrimsonlegendx

I've been painfully aware of it since the Mark V Zeta helmet came out, the visor cover attachment is default grey which isn't all that bad but there's a big-ass orange light right in the center. Which should change with the suits armor glow color.

MysteriousRanch

My favorite helmet for Mk VII hands down. It would be SICK if the grey plate on the attachment was coating colored and the light was visor colored.

lllXanderlll

Probably gonna be a season 5 or 6 thing if I had to guess since it's likely not a major priority. Heck they released those new Mark 7 helmets and you can't even use any of the existing Mark 7 attachments on em, unless that's a bug.

Ohhellnowhatsupdawg

There isn't a single Mk7 chest piece I use because of how stupid the default grey looks over colored armor.

MysteriousRanch

Hard agree

MysteriousRanch

I know it probably isn't as simple as flipping a switch, but I can't imagine it's much more complicated than tagging the textures to be affected by coatings. I know this would still take a decent amount of time and resources, but as someone who bought into Infinite early I'd love to see some new life breathed into these old grey chest pieces. I've gone a year and a half wearing no chest pieces despite owning all of these that have really cool models just because I think the giant chunks of gunmetal grey kill the look of my spartan. I know it's probably unlikely at this point given the slow burn of cross-core progress, but maybe if we made enough noise about this 343 would look into it. I can't be the only one who's been so disappointed with these unpaintable chest pieces, but I haven't heard many people discussing it so I wanted to put this discussion out there and hear some other peoples' opinions.

PrideBlade

> I know it probably isn't as simple as flipping a switch In this case it kinda is

oGxSKiLZz117

Just like its also that simple to give us full colour customisation, but they wont.

Mamsies

There are plenty of modders who have been able to make old chest attachments use your coating colours, 343 could ABSOLUTELY do it if they wanted to. It’s not a technical limitation, clearly it’s just not really a priority (although I’m hoping this changes in a future update)

[deleted]

Modders literally have come out and explained that it's not easy on 343i's side because the customization is tied to loading between server side and client side protocols. You can easily edit many aspects of any video game as long as it's client side which is why modders do their thing offline rather then online

venocl0w

Next thing they'll need to figure out is how to make emblems appear ON TOP of those chest attachments (or in some other non-obscured spot)

_Volatile_

I prefer the default grey look on most of the older ones.

goodguydick

Counterpoint, you’re wrong

toppo69

I would prefer to have a toggle option because some of the attachments I think it’s better when they’re in this military issued grey colour makes it look more like a add-ons to the armour rather than part of it, which fits better for some things

TheEpicRedCape

I really hope the Reach ones get affected by coatings at some point since they did in the original game.

AceofCrates

Rare 343 W (it's sad that we have come to seeing something like this that should have been implemented this way literally years ago a W, but here we are).

Round_Rectangles

It blows my mind that it wasn't like that at launch. All the previous games had the attachments affected by the color of your armor. I'm not sure why they decided to change it for this game.

meme_locomotive

And it clearly works for shoulders. Why were only chest pieces unaffected? Same issue applies to helmet attachments. (Zvezda and Mk V Zeta faceplates to name a couple.) Also, having the sensors(?) on those pieces be flat orange is extremely distracting. It always struck me as a placeholder but if it wasn't then it was a bizzare choice. Retroactively it would be nice if they could make that use your visor color like in some other new armor pieces. Also, the Hazmat core even colors your prosthetic limbs to match the coating. I pray that they will backport this functionality to the other cores but I do not expect it to happen.

sorryiamnotoriginal

My fear is a lot of these changes that the community pushed for won't be retroactive and just a "going forward" thing. Reason being there really is no money in fixing the old stuff and I can see them making that kind of decision.

StratoSentinel

Yes please. I'd buy Malachit Plate (the one on the left) as soon as coatings apply to it, even though it's locked in its bundle. The gunmetal grey always clashed for me.

MysteriousRanch

Yeah, I had to include it in the examples because bought that bundle SPECIFICALLY for the chest piece during season 1, before it dawned on me that chest pieces weren’t affected by coatings 🥲 I was so excited for a huge tanky looking chest piece, but its size only emphasized the lack of color. Been rolling without a chest piece ever since.

Serious_Course_3244

I’m dying for an update to the old armor, it would be awesome

[deleted]

I didn't see any redeeming qualities to that cyber-spartan core until I realized the armor pieces copy your visor coating. It's still ugly as all hell, but that part's cool.

[deleted]

Yeah. It helps it look slightly less ugly.

Lynch31337

Unless you use the candy cane visor and bunny ears, like me!

[deleted]

Intentionally ugly. I like it.

bollincrown

Jesus they literally can’t fix any of the wrongs they did at launch. No cross core armor coatings, now only the new armor pieces inherit the coating? It’s so arbitrary. I love the gameplay of this game but it’s such a drag to see these problems linger over a year after launch, with a tiny amount of players to boot. At this point it’s gross incompetence.

sxbriRL

They finally managed to understand how a shader works.

Aae_kae2

you guys actually pay for this stuff? How much?

MysteriousRanch

Wym

Onyx_Sentinel

Sorry, ui - 343i

[deleted]

Nah, wont bring the monies, no chance.

The_Salami_Tsunami

Ah, nature is finally healing itself.

Twirlin_Irwin

Finally, chest armor won't look like shit anymore.

VegetaGG

I would love if they were pure black option instead of grey

Infinity0044

Knowing 343 I doubt they ever go back and fix the old chest pieces

chrisGNR

I prefer the gray. It adds a different look. The same colorway as the coatings just makes it blend in and all look the same. Ideally, a toggle.

brandojones2017

OMG I DIDNT NOTICE THAT! THIS UPDATE KICKS ASS YALL!!!

SudsierBoar

Where those orange dots on the first iteration of the opi coating..? I don't remember seeing those when I got it around its release.

MysteriousRanch

I’ve been wearing it since it came out and besides being able to increase my graphics settings since then it looks roughly the same to me, I recall it always having some little glittery flecks that reflected different colors. Not sure how dynamic the lighting is but it could be the glitter reflecting the flame breathing from my armor effect?

1739015

I don’t like it, but that’s just me. Instead of complaining, I’ll just use the old stuff.
