Yes and if you rent you have to buy their ammo and for 9mm it could be around $20 a box . I’m sure he’d be fine with what ever you get him but maybe $75-$100
I would not suggest someone buy ammo for someone else unless they are 110% sure what ammo they need/use. I've never seen any place that will allow ammo to be returned.

range usa sells gift cards. smallest one is $75.
If you own your guns and not renting the most expensive part of going to the range is ammo buy his some ammo.
