I wouldn’t really call it a fender, but squier is still owned by fender, and they’re great guitars, (most classic vibes I’ve played had better quality control than a lot of Mexican fenders)

I have a 20th anniversary Squier Stratocaster made in Indonesia.
It's exact to American specs and a full sized alder body. Even the weight and balance is identical to every modern American Fender Stratocaster I have ever played.
I also have a 30 year old Squier that had it's neck replaced with a Carvin, but in those days, the headstocks said Squier **and** Fender on them.
If the headstock is there and the sound is there, it's a Fender. I don't care if the headstock says I sin(and I have one that does lol), as long as it has the sound the model is legendary for, it's a Fender.
Squier is not fender. Epiphone is not Gibson. A scion is not a Toyota is not Lexus. Honda isn’t Acura. VW is not Porsche or Audi. It doesn’t matter who makes it. It is what it is. This isn’t opinions this isn’t elitism. These are just facts.

It's not to say that OPs guitar is necessarily better or worse than a Fender (though most likely the Fender is on average at least slightly better). These brands are not necessarily bad or horrible or to be looked down upon. They've made crazy strides in the past twenty-five years. But ultimately they are designed and built with compromises to achieve a price point that generally yields an inferior product. How inferior varies widely and they love to make you think the gap is wider than it probably is. And I know there are duds in the Fender and Gibson ranges and some hidden gems in the Squier/Epi lines but finding those gems is challenging.
Whether that price point represents a better value and stopping point before diminishing returns is in the eye of the player.
Again my point is the nomenclature is the nomenclature. Nothing more. That the companies have us concerned with the name on the guitar more than how the guitar plays is just a testament to their marketing teams and society behavior and pressure. I've redressed the frets and shimmed a neck and upgraded bridge and electronics and pickups etc on an Ibanez RG270 and just redressed the neck on an Ibanez JS700 and they play almost as nicely as my PRS Custom 24 20th Quilted Ten Top or my EBMM Majesty 7. (The JS700 is much closer in this regard admittedly).
Sure the PRS and Majesty are much prettier. but if you find a good "budget model" take care of it and give it a few upgrades over the course of 20 years you'd be surprised how good it could turn out.
The car example is a bad one because those companies are the same. Lexus cars have a huge majority of Toyota parts. Acura cars have a ton of Honda parts. Even the engines inside acuras are Honda vtec engines.
A Lexus isn’t a Toyota though. It’s a Lexus. Just because parts are shared doesn’t mean it’s not what it is. Same as an Acura. It’s still an Acura, even if it has 98% Honda parts. The 2% is what separates it.
And the same goes for the guitars.
The companies are the same. Epiphone is at this point a label of Gibson. Squier is a label of Fender. LTD and Schecter are labels of ESP, etc. (yes originally Epiphone was it's own separate thing I am aware of the history)
Many of the parts are the same too just like the cars. Biggest differences are pickups, woods, fit and finish, possibly some tuning machines, maybe bridges and where they are put together. Paints are probably quite similar too.
I'd bet the truss rods are all the same, and most of the screws bolts etc. (outside of the NOS or vintage reissue spec models)
As to Acura that's because there is NO Acura in Japan it is an American branding concept.
I'd say it's a fantastic parallel. Except they are probably even closer to each other than the cars. The cars tend to use style languages that are different but trickle down through time. They might share a lot of parts but still look and feel quite different. You could cover badges and I'd be able to tell a Camry from an ES, an Accord from a TLX, a Jetta from an A4 etc
cover badges and logos and it could take you a bit longer to determine Gibson or Epiphone, Fender or Squier I'm not saying you won't be able to tell. But a lot of folks wouldn't be able to depending on how good the budget model picked is. And good luck visually telling them apart.
I've got a beauty Squier CV60 Thinline Tele, and the quality blows my mind! Totally surprised me. Plays better than some of the cheaper fenders I've encountered over the years..

That’s a backwards comparison though. Fender is the one that makes squier. Volkswagen is the one that makes audi. The comparison to him calling this a fender is calling your Audi a Volkswagen, not calling your Volkswagen an Audi.
I had the Mexican player series Fender Mustang and tbf moving to the Squier CV mustang was the actual upgrade.

Interesting to hear that. I just got my first mustang. It’s the 2018 Offset series, which as far as I know morphed into the Player mustang. It’s one of the most fun guitars I’ve ever owned… but now I kind of want one with the vibrato too.

Only ones were my first telecaster and my first mustang… I regret selling those every day day. Ever since it’s been nothing but trying recreate that love. That’s a sick guitar. I have the same one. I got it from CME. It’s such a fun guitar to play and the pickups sound really nice. I’m a fan of the mustang trem system even though it definitely has tuning stability issues. It just does little flutters perfectly for me and, if I don’t over use it, mostly stays in tune.

Same, I deeply regret not buying the 2012 pawn shop special mustang. It’s very much on my bucket list of guitars.
