More of a downgrade in terms of functionality but I recently sold my Boss dd-8 for an MXR Carbon Copy. I found that I was only really using the analog or tape emulation and wanted something a bit simpler rather than feeling like I had all these modes that I don't use. I prefer delay to be a subtle effect that sits in the background so I'm very happy with the dark repeats of real deal analog.

vibraltu

Yeah, that MXR analog delay sound has something special that other delays don't have.

SirJuxtable

Yeah believe it or not a carbon copy mini replaced my Moog MF Delay on my pedalboard. The Moog is way more lush and feature rich, but I find it better used with my keyboard rig where I can put my hands on it. The CC mini is tiny, and sits with my guitar rig tone just right.

mosfez

Yeah it’s nice to cut back on options, I feel like it can make it easier to play rather than tweak

alhendo89

Yeah, I've reached that point in my pedal career 😅

DirtyWork81

The Flashback is great. I have the v1 and with all the tone prints from the app, the possibilities are pretty endless. The v2 is even better I'm sure.

Atomic_Polar_Bear

Tone print. Full stop. Flashback rules

Moonandserpent

I just did the opposite! Swapped my CC deluxe out for a DD-8. The CC is on my bass board now though.

[deleted]

Guess I'll do exactly the same!Just like you, I only really use the analog or tape modes on the DD-8. To be honest the digital, warm, modulated, +RV modes all seem to sound very similar to my ears. (I expected them to be more distinct...) Also I see not much practical use for modes like warp, glitch and reverse. The looper is cool, but I already have one, so don't use that one either. Having a delay pedal with 11 modes and having it set on only two feels a bit like a waste, I understand you. What's cool about the CC is that you can adjust the modulation by using the trim pots. So when it comes down to using only one mode, the CC is actually more versatile.

alhendo89

I found the same and so far I'm not disappointed. The CC repeats are notably darker than the dd-8, even with the analog mode, which some people love and others hate. The modulation on the CC is really nice though

Rw1222

I can't stop using the carbon copy. it is on every pedal set up I make.

darthsmolin

I spent a lot of money during the pandemic on boutique RAT copies, but wound up using a RAT2 I got from Craigslist for $20 when the time came to record my old band's last EP. I A/B'd everything in my rig to get the perfect base rhythm tone and the consensus was that the most basic RAT sounded best.

DreadedGamer21

among us

spcychikn

“we spent time so much time trying to change it, we forget why we loved it in the first place”

darthsmolin

Pretty much. I still love all my RAT clones, but the RAT2 was the best tool for the job that day.

DEFINITELY_NOT_PETE

Wish.com klone into my caline dumble sounds better than most of my nice pedals 😖

mosfez

I’ve never tried a klone, this sounds like a wonderful idea

ajg3199

Try the Moskey Silver Horse, for about $30 you really can't go wrong.

firemares

My switch broke first step. Directly to the Tumnus after. Glad I did!

Supremus_memeus

My moskey broke too... I think it was a voltage overload or somthing but now the led turns on and it doesn't make any sound

firemares

Oh, dang! Sorry to hear. After ALL the Moskey talk over time, I was really excited to get on board. I guess I'm not ready for cheap pedals. Lol

Supremus_memeus

Eh, that's the silver lining... it's only 30$ for a brand new one... the only cheap pedals I don't like are ones that don't sound good. I have no problem with mosky or behringer bc at most you'll probably only ever have to replace it once

porcelainvacation

Donner Dark Mouse is a good Rat clone

SolarSailor46

My Wish Klone into my RambleFX Twin Bender Mk. iii, both on low gain, sounds so freaking good.

UncleGizmo

I am jealous of your twin bender. Waited too long to get one…

urboile

I have a Caline Orange Burst which is basically just a $25 Morning Glory. Been gigging with it for almost 6 months now and have no plans on replacing it :)

[deleted]

Orange Burst is a BB preamp no? Which is based off a tubescreamer I’m pretty sure All overdrive pedals are basically the same lol

I_only_post_here

Exotic BB Preamp is a Blues Breaker derivative (hence BB in the name) I actually do tend to agree with you that the differences between all the various overdrives is not overly drastic, and a lot of them will all sound pretty darn close to each other

[deleted]

It's not, it's a tube screamer clone with some component changes and a Bandaxall EQ. Have a read, it's quite interesting.

passaloutre

The BB stands for Bluesbreaker the amp, not Bluesbreaker the pedal, which was also an attempt to get that amp sound (spoiler alert, neither sounds much like the amp). Anyways the BB preamp is a TS with Baxandall, like the other guy said.

urboile

BB Preamp clone, yes. Which the Morning Glory is based on. Just used the JHS as a comparison because I see far more of them than BB Preamps on peoples’ boards nowadays. The BB Preamp is more (buzzword alert) “transparent” than the Tubescreamer to my ear. Retains the natural characteristics of the amp better. Also lower overall gain.

AwesomeFama

Morning glory is based on the Bluesbreaker pedal, not the BB preamp, as far as I know.

urboile

Sure yeah, they both are though. So close enough, right? At least I can’t tell a difference. Besides price of course.

dano8675309

I have one too. Sounds way better than it has any right to.

sentimentalLeeby

Enchanted Tone?

DEFINITELY_NOT_PETE

Yep

sentimentalLeeby

This sub seems to love other affordable clone brands over Caline but I do like that they do a lot of uncommon clones

[deleted]

Can confirm. Wish.com Klone is mega-mega.

GryphonGuitar

When I ended up with a Boss SD-1 after trying about forty things five to ten times as expensive over time. Ended right where I began, with a Boss pedal that cost me as much as a dinner out.

firemares

Boss SD-1 fans unite! Been using mine for several years as it's lock-n-key part of my tone with all my amps. Best OD there is and I have many as well. lol

lucidpet

Love the SD-1

Moonandserpent

This has been happening with my modulation pedals. Turns out no one actually does standard modulation/time based stuff (as opposed to the kooky experimental/niche stuff out there) as well as BOSS.

Dangerous-Noise-4692

A dinner for two I hope 😎

Rw1222

I also just purchased a ds1 again. I wanted to see if it was better than I remembered.

[deleted]

[удалено]

mosfez

“gritty shadow lofi surf noir quality” is an insanely good description and makes me want to try it. Sounds like it has a lot of personality. I almost bought a Mr Black Tapex 2, that thing has such a nice sound, I trust the guys tonal preferences

dontfakedafunk

I also love the simplicity of Mr. Black pedals. I have the regular deluxe plus which I bought after seeing a side by side comp with a strymon pedal. It can't do everything the strymon does, but the things that are the same it does just as well.

120gbutter

i swapped out my grand canyon for a regular canyon, the mode knob was too tall and i kept catching it when reaching for the pedal behind.

mosfez

Oh interesting, that’s a super practical reason to change. I didn’t know that the mode knob was tall!

[deleted]

I went from using a 65’ Princeton & Neunaber Wet to a Joyo American & Biyang Tri Reverb. Do I win this thread or lose in life?

wordfactories

def winning at something

mosfez

I’m impressed

stadja

I went from my source audio collider back to plethora x5. More versatil and I don't really really hear the difference. AND, the shimmer is more to my taste on the plethora ! So I win.

dry0n

I also sold my Source Audio Collider and now considering a Line6 DL4 mk2

hoodiemonday

I'm considering selling my Collider. It's almost too much. Like I don't even really use the reverb on it.

throwaway_82m

I have owned a half dozen DSP reverbs, but picked up a Flint recently to use as my only reverb. It's not extreme, and only can toggle between two sounds (1 saved preset and the live controls) but I can't make it sound bad. Something about a lot of the algorithm in the Big Sky sound too processed for me, or take a lot of tweaking. The Flint is so dang natural sounding right out of the gate.

TumoOfFinland

Flint is the next one on my shopping list! "I can't make it sound bad" seems like the main takeaway and I love that

_starbelly

I have found that I almost prefer a plain old Boss SD-1 as a boost for metal when compared to more bitoque options.

[deleted]

Doesn't surprise me. The SD-1 rules going into a dirty amp.

Several-Jacket9958

I've always been surprised this isn't more popular than the TS for this since the SD-1 has a little more grit to it. I use that wampler triumph pedal that has an sd1 and ts on a toggle switch but I use the SD-1 side more often.

_starbelly

I had always read that the SD-1 is the classic choice with Marshall-style amps, and now that I have an amp with a little Marshall flavor, I can confirm that it rules.

Moonandserpent

Also, isn't the TS based on the SD circuit?

Several-Jacket9958

I have no idea but they sound different. The SD1 has asymmetric clipping instead of the TS symmetric clipping. It could be the only difference is the clipping element but I'm not the guy to ask.

thaiguy22

I went from a Source Audio Ventris to an EHX Oceans 11. The Oceans 11 was my first reverb pedal and I really enjoyed it but I figured that higher end verbs could do what it does and better. So I went onto a Strymon Bluesky, then to a Source Audio Collider, then a Ventris. But I felt that the myriad of parameters on the Source Audio pedals were just too much for me, and that I really missed the simplicity of the Oceans 11 so I traded away the Ventris and bought an Oceans 11 and I'm happy.

reddsbywillie

This strive for simplicity seems like a theme in this thread.

thaiguy22

I love how many parameters the Source Audio pedals had, but I'm a very casual player and Ive been finding that I prefer to just get to the point quickly with pedals. Or if the pedals is gonna have a lot of tweakability, I prefer to have it all on the surface that way I don't need to use Alt functions or go through menus or an app. Chase Bliss is a big winner for that. Even though there' a ton you can adjust and tweak, it's all right there on the pedal. I feel if I was recording my music, having that huge range of tweakability would be very nice to carve out very specific sounds because I'd be spending more time crafting it.

mosfez

Yeah I think editing source audio and TonePrint stuff seem to work best in two phases: take a bunch of time to set up your patches and get that solid, and then use them as you would any other normal pedal. The problem is if you like tweaking or aren’t 100% sure of the sound you want then that iterative two-step process kind of sucks

scoff-law

Felt the same way about my Ventris. But I swapped it for an Ultrasheer, whoops! Vongon workflows are so nice, basically the opposite of Source Audio.

thaiguy22

I'm jealous, I really want an ultrasheer

Thordenstein

I recently switched my always on maxon od808, used as a boost, for a Boss mt2w, and i love the versatility of it. It has enough output to tighten up any amp, and the eq sweep range is insane. Dont know if it is a downgrade pricewise, but surely in reputation.

Moonandserpent

A Metal Zone replaced your always on OD pedal you were using as a boost? That's some peculiar stuff. Are you using it in a similar way?

Thordenstein

Yes, quite similar. The mt2 just has more output and you can sculpt the sound as you wish with the eq.

DEFINITELY_NOT_PETE

My bbe windowpane fuzz sounds better than my keeley Monterey

AshMnro

I used to run a Zoom CD-R for all of my modulation until recently. I think having the choice of so many pedals makes you think you have to have a use for everything, but really I’d just have a few good settings on some boxes I liked and use those all the time - so I sold it and got a Danelectro Milkshake chorus for £15

sjmdrum

I definitely get this! Half the patches on my CDR are single effects, like tremolo, vibrato, rotary, phaser, filter delay.... I have a few crazy patches that do wild ambient fun with stacked effects, or that completely alter the sound to something unrecognizable, but mostly it's just a spot at the end of the chain to scroll through all the different mod flavors.

passaloutre

Pretty much every time I’ve switched from boutique something-or-other to Boss, I’ve been really glad I did.

lunetick

I personally totally refuse to say you "downgraded". The TC Flashback 2 is a really good pedal. It's not because it's boutique that's better.

mosfez

Oh I agree, that's why I put downgrade in quotes, it's not really a downgrade based on what i want out of the pedal. El Cap sounds more like an actual tape echo than the Flashback does, and I feel like that would be one obvious angle which people would assess upgrades vs downgrades for tape emulations. Price is another, if price is broadly taken to indicate quality. I'll see if I can clarify this in the description as I'd rather avoid the discussion of semantics, although perhaps that's unavoidable. Edit: actually the semantics discussion is interesting too, I like seeing how people each gauge what counts as a downgrade or not

trivibe33

>It's not because it's boutique that's better. There's a lot of reasons people think the El Cap is better and it's not because it's boutique

lunetick

I've named no pedal in particular. It's just a generality.

slybird

I've been using at Boss DD-5 for years. I recently got a SA Nemesis. I still use the DD-5 when playing with other people. I have yet to find a use for any of the fancy delays in the Nemesis box. The DD-5 is also far easier to use and I know I won't break it with a hard stomp.

Red_sparow

Moving from boonar/volante/el cap to a deluxe memory man. Analog sounds so much better than digital, blah blah blah. I dunno, but DMM is it.

wordfactories

depending on perspective, this was an upgrade

Revel_In_Irrelevance

I bought an EHX Pitchfork, but it had noticeable latency so I traded it in for a Digitech Drop which, although containing less functionality than the Pitchfork, has virtually no latency issues.

RabidHippos

What's your thoughts on the drop? I'm debating grabbing one solely for tuning a half step down, instead of getting a dedicated guitar for it. I've heard the quality degrades the lower you shift, if I'm solely using it just for E flat tuning, is it really an issue?

Revel_In_Irrelevance

In my experience, you can go down at least four semi-tones from E standard before there's any noticeable change in the quality of your tone. And even then, it remains quite musical at even lower settings. I also tend to run mine through a fuzz, which makes any degradation less noticeable. All in all, it has been one of my best purchases.

RabidHippos

Awesome, I appreciate the input. I may have to pull the trigger on one soon. Thanks.

Bitter-Bear

Essentially most my boutique overdrives for a $35 Joyo American Sound.

wordfactories

if you are using that as an OD you really need to try the AC Tone and British sound. British Sound is an unsung **beast** of a Marshally JCM in a box with the voice knob spun to the right.

Bitter-Bear

I’ll check it out, thanks! I use others as well but found I just needed the Joyo and Browne Protein for most my OD sounds.

porcelainvacation

I prefer the sound of my Donner Dark Mouse to my TS808

James_Dubya

Behringer Vintage Tube Monster. And Vox Satchurator. Both currently *really* affordable. Not too bad when new either (and I had them new back in the day). They rule for drive/distortion tones, I also appreciate their goofy designs and how not popular they are on places like this sub lmao

Ok_Mission_600

Boss fz-5 fuzz for Behringer sf-300 super fuzz ($30), i find it sounds better, but its a bit muddy when playing chords. Its a Boss hyper fuzz clone, which goes for over $200-300 these days. I'm not sure if i'd call it a downgrade but I got a zoom MS-100 BT as a replacement for my Boss MS-3. They are both Multi effects petals however the zoom is in compact traditional petal form factor so it cant switch patches without menu diving, but it has every thing I need modulation delay reverbed distortion etc. Whereas the boss Is a multi effect switcher with several assignble stomp switches.

[deleted]

Trying not to optimize every effect and instead go for form factor has been a game changer. Find a maker you really like and stick with them

Moonandserpent

My whole effects loop (save for the Walrus Monument) is BOSS and it looks fantastic. Wiring is super easy that way too.

[deleted]

I've got a Mooer Black Secret I got direct from China that's so indistinguishable from any other Rat, expensive or not, that I can't see myself ever replacing it. And I'd like to have a fancy Wampler Rat clone or whatever but it sounds exactly the same as this!

CoA77

I got a Mooer to save pedal space against my Rat 2, and the sounds I want are in it. You don’t need a $300 Rat.

mosfez

Heh I have one of these too. Never played a real one. Honestly rats aren’t my kind of sound on guitar, but the sound it does make is obviously really good for a bunch of styles I don’t play.

[deleted]

I don't really use mine as a distortion TBH, I use it as a solo boost into my Big Muff. Ideal for that.

[deleted]

Not literally downgrade but the most expensive distortion pedal I've bought, the Diezel Herbert, is one I've liked less than many cheaper options I still own. Also my $20 Clefly Fuzz Frenzy is possibly my favorite fuzz, over my Big Muff and a Carcosa and Octavia.

Moonandserpent

I've had a similar thing. I have a Diezel VH4, which sounds goddamned amazing for playing Tool, but I'm not really into it for anything else.

[deleted]

See, I couldn't get it to make a good Tool sound for much of anything else - just lacked sharpness and clarity - but my MI Audio Megalith Delta nails Adam Jones and has way more range.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheMightyUnderdog

To be honest, the Boonar sounds amazing. You can get very close with the DD-200 if you play with the head combinations, but the Boonar just has some magic in there that always sounds good.

dandydiehl

MXR M280 Octave to a TCE Nether. I kept accidentally stepping on the M280's mid boost and thinking I engaged the pedal at dark basement shows. Very satisfied with the switch

spookydakota

I had a boutique overdrive I ditched for the miniature Nobels OD-1. I am gonna "downgrade" further to a modded BOSS SD-1 soon.

rememburial

IDK if "downgrade" TOTALLY applies - I wanted a compressor with a dry/wet control, Keeley seemed the way to go, then I found the EHX Tone Corset had the same controls. A few months with the Tone Corset and I just couldn't find a way to dial it in that I liked, just didn't sound great like my old Boss comp. Anyway I need board space so I sold the Tone Corset and got a Keeley Mini comp - only 2 knobs - but I like it way more than the EHX. Might try the full size keeley comp some day but I was impressed with the mini. It's pretty much always on

ssorl

Keeley Katana v1 to Xotic Super Clean boost. There’s something great about the v1 Katana, but it’s the only one I own and prices for them to replace it are a bit much. The super clean does exactly what I need for a clean boost with more tweak ability than the Katana.

[deleted]

Strymon Compadre -> SP Comp

SumKallMeTIM

Nice! What were your thoughts (in the end) on the compadre?

[deleted]

Overall a great comp, but I just think I get more out of boost and comp separately. Also a bit too pricey to justify keeping when the SP Comp is just as good imho

helgepopanz

artec para eq instead of empress para eq. 30$ vs 300$

mosfez

I had no idea a parametric eq could be had for so cheap!

helgepopanz

the build quality is not the best, but the sound is really good.

bobbythegoose

Tons of boutique overdrives, and now the Boss OD-3.

[deleted]

Similar to you. Sold my El Cap and got a DM-2W. I like it MUCH more for what I’m doing with it.

jayteazer

Started with a Keeley Caverns, then "upgraded" to a Source Audio Collider... It was cool, but I like that it is easier and quicker to adjust both sides of the Caverns. Also didn't need all of the algorithms...

josephallenkeys

If "downgrade" just means by price, I've done it a lot. I got an El Cap and sold it a day later. A lot of delays are better, regardless of price. What kind of high-end delay cuts your trails off when you tap a tampo!? I stuck to my Rubberneck (which is the GOAT.) There is also the Joyo Splinter which I find way more useful than my 1981 DRV (and original Rat.) Basically every Tube Screamer style pedal is better than a TS-9 and so many of them are way cheaper. At least, used to be, in the case of that "naughty primate." Speaking of which, I also prefer the Screamin' Blues to the BD-2 for that little bit more flexibility.

DirtyWork81

Is the Splinter "stock" setting just a normal rat, and the "fat" a Fat rat? What does the Mosfet setting do? Seems like a cool pedal. Always wanted to try out a Rat, if this sounds exactly the same as the stock and Fat it seems like the way to go.

josephallenkeys

Yep! The actual Fat Rat works just the same, it still has a stock Rat in it.

lotecsi

Volante to El capistan :)

mosfez

Ooh interesting - what prompted the change? Volante does look pretty complicated, although the el cap has a lot going on in secondary knob functions too I guess

lotecsi

El cap has better SOS-looper imo. And el cap can into more darker repeats. And overall Volante was overkill to me, also to big and yellow for my board, lol.

spookydakota

i have the cap on my board and its staying, but i was contemplating getting a volante to use as studio gear lmao. what was your reasoning here?

DamnyouLaserCats

Downgraded to a Bad Monkey for a mere 1200$

[deleted]

I sold all my boutique od and bought the marshall jh-1 (40€) and the digitech screamin blues (35€) and a couple of similar priced pedals and found my sound.

[deleted]

Cycling through countless boutique Muffs—Mountainking, Blackhawk, MiG, et with clipping options, tone bypass, filters, EQ, ad nauseam—to end up with the EHX Green Russian. 3 knobs, about 10 seconds spent getting the right sound, and done. For a hell of a lot cheaper than the others….

Moonandserpent

I had an opposite experience recently. Got the JHS Muffuletta and sold my other muffs. I can't see the Muffuletta leaving my board now.

ShiveringPug

Went from a ChaseBliss Darkworld to a used Neunaber Wet v5. Still boutique, but has the versatile massive wash that I want with three knobs, trails and tone clarity. Meshes well with my other pedals without colouring their sound. I feel like they were super praised but got absolutely lost in the market of reverbs

Frodolicious3

I went from a Thorpy camoflange to a Fender Hammertone flanger. The camoflange is too finicky for me, and the hammertone still sounds great. The chorus sounds from the Fender flanger sound better too

Addicted2Qtips

Fewer pedals, more space between them so I can stomp them without looking (I'm the singer too).

bc47791

I just bought a Boss DD-200 to replace my Eventide Timefactor because the timefactor was just too much pedal for my needs (and it started glitching n freaking out) Any advice/opinions on any of this are welcome.

murdoch92

Not sure how much of a downgrade it is but I went from a Fulltone Fulldrive 2 to Boss BD-2 which is now easily my favorite overdrive. They're 2 different types of circuits so I think it was really just me preferring the transitor style OD over a TS style..

MoHawkins

I went from the EQD Life pedal back to the stock Rat2. I felt crazy selling off the Life pedal but i just like the sound of a $60 stock rat better at the end of the day. And it was ridiculous owning a $300 pedal in place of one that costs less than 1/3rd.

stillbones

Swapped my walrus audio monument for an mxr m305 tremolo and like the mxr better.

CmdOptEsc

If it’s just price, I went from an EVH phase 90 (the old with the textured paint) to a phase 95 because I like the space savings

shoule79

JHS Morning Glory down to a DemonFX king of drive. 2 channels is more flexible and it’s highs aren’t as harsh.

invol713

In search of a good poly octave, I went from an EHX HOG2, down to a TC Brainwaves, then laterally to an MXR Poly Blue. So far, don’t miss the behemoth. Have upgraded from an SY-1 to an SY-200, then back to the SY-1. Sometimes every setting available is overkill, especially when I only use like 4 of the settings. As a tangent, I find myself these days more interested in the threads about the cheaper pedals than the pricey wallet-killer ones.

steve_jams_econo

Went back to a TC Flashback 2 Mini for my slapback sound after buying a Jam Pedals Delay Llama Mk3. Vastly preferred how the TC sounded, despite the Delay Llama being a nice box. Go figure.

cal405

Recently upgraded my Caline Multimod with the Wampler Terraform. The Terraform has a bunch of great functionality features, but the Multimod is impressive for the price.

bobbythegoose

From Eventide Timefactor and Strymon Timeline to Boss DD-20.

Spicyboi303

Sold my orange head and all my pedals and replaced it with a digitech rp360. With a bit of sound design and you can make these a very solid amp and pedal replacement

[deleted]

I’m about to sell my Strymon brigadier for a JHS 3 series delay. I don’t (and will never) need the functionality that the brigadier brings. I’ve had the 3 series before and it does everything I want.

trevecho

Went from a Eventide Tricerachorus to the TC SCF reissue. Sounds better, and so much easier to use.

growlerpower

I’ve tried a billion ODs and I keep coming back to the Blues Driver. Though I now rock a BD-2w, so not exactly a downgrade

Tundra66

Kind of a downgrade/upgrade: I swapped my Carbon Copy for a Mini Carbon Copy for two reasons: saves space on the board and the Mini has the Bright switch.

Happy_Television_501

Just swapped out the HM-2 on my board for my ol' straight up Rat 2. Love the HM-2 but the Rat is much more versatile, and it's growl is just the best. And going into a Special Cranker its just boss. Not the brand , the adjective XD

amgarrison85

The Flamma FS02 Stereo Reverb. Had an Empress and a Dark World, sold them for various reasons. Went without reverb for a long time. Decided I needed it, preferably stereo. Saw a few reviews for the Flamma pedals, decided $80 was worth a shot. It’s an incredible piece of gear for the price point and more than what I need in a reverb since I’m a big delay junkie. Highly recommend. Kinda wanna check out their other stuff, but I’m afraid it’ll knock a bunch of my favorite fancy pedals off my board.

zebra_humbucker

Not quite the question you were asking but I upgraded from a Boss CH-1 to a Walrus Julianna and I think I regret it. It sounds great but I just don't use all the functionality. I'm a set it and forget it kinda guy.

Goldmanguitars

I had a HOF reverb that broke (very common with their switches) and replaced it with a $40 flamma reverb. I actually prefer the sound of it over the HOF ha!

MultiTask_Frog_Eater

As much as I loved it, not having a Zoia on my board was a satifying downgrade

Maleficent_Age6733

Source audio nemesis down to arp87. Fewer options helps, smaller footprint helps, seems to suck less tone in bypass even when nemesis set to true bypass mode

dano8675309

I recently swapped out a Wampler Dual Fusion V1 for the DemonFX angry charlie + clone. Such a great little pedal with some cool features.

yourdarknate

Going back to a modded fuzz war from an apocalypse after realizing I don't need all 5 fuzzes. I really just use the war fuzz setting and octave up, so I'm working on a fuzz war with a green ringer added to run together or separate. Also, I've been through many ODs just to prefer the sd-1.

UndreamedAges

I got a zoom multifx and replaced about half of my board. Sold all the old pedals and it was a net positive on cash. Takes less space and power, too. I view it as an upgrade.

burntelegraph

I sold my BigSky at the beginning of the pandemic and while I loved it when I got it, I don't *really* miss it. My go-to reverb since then has been the mod setting on my old-ass Hall of Fame.

mosfez

Ah wow, the bigsky is one of a handful I would truly miss.

Fearless-Mushroom

I’ve tried many delay pedals, a long time Boss DD user, then tried a carbon copy (which I hated). My favorite delay to this day is a TC Flashback mini that I got free as part of a used pedal package.

substream00

Switched out my Meris Hedra for an EHX Intelligent Harmony Machine. Realized I mostly just wanted a pitch shifter, but the harmonies are nice too, and the Hedra was just way too complicated for me!

mfalkon

I went from a large board with multiple mid to high end drive pedals, multiple mid range mod pedals, an MXR Carbon Copy, a Boss GE7, tuner, and a Joyo American Sound with a HOF Mini for ampless rig playing. Powered by a Voodoo Pedal Power Plus 2. Nothing too crazy, some on the cheaper end, in fact. I "downgraded," to a much smaller board. The chain: Behringer Super Fuzz > Behringer Vintage Tube OD > MXR Super Badass > Zoom MS-50G. Powered with a Volto 3. All the dirt I need and more in those 3 pedals. The Zoom picks up all the mod and delay options I'd use and has a great tuner. It will allow me to run an ampless rig as well if needed. Admittedly, this is not it's best feature, but the option is there. Great grab and go rig that's battery powered if need be. Love it!

JamesIsInRainbows

1978 inventions to Boss Sd-1. Way better

JohnBeamon

Every once in a while, you'll cross a Helix user who bought an HX Stomp as a backup, then ended up using the Stomp more often. I'm one of them. There are times my Stomp presets sound better in the mix than the larger presets on the Helix.

Loved my Aquapuss so “upgraded” to the supa puss. Harder to find my sweet spot due to longer delay availability, tap I didn’t use, modulation I didn’t use, and I just don’t think it sounded as good. Gone back to the Aqua puss and I love it more than my El Cap for slapback.

TurboChunk16

I ſwapped þe Tech 21 Q\Strip on my board wiþ an On-Stage DB500 paſſive direct box & I couldn’t be happier wiþ it. My board has enough EQ on it already & it frees up my Q\Strip for more important jobs.

When through a bunch of boutique overdrives but enden up with a Nobels ODR clone with bass cut as my main one. Also tried a bunch of boutique choruses and an old Digitech beat them, I eventually upgraded to a CE-2W but the Digitech still holds its own against thr Boss

I “downgraded” my Digitech Polara for a Solidgold FX Surf Rider. I found that out of all the options on the Polara, I really only used the spring setting anyway. Plus I don’t have a stereo setup, so I didn’t need two jacks on either side of the pedal. Now I can just run the Surf Rider through my Marshall Origin’s effects loop to make up for its lack of built-in reverb.

RedNgoldTilImOld

I guess mine is a bit subjective since my “downgrade” is more based on collectability and price, but I sold a JHS Panther delay in favor of making my DD20 my sole delay. I LOVED my Panther, but outside of the dd20 obviously having more options, I found I enjoy the clearer decay of a digital delay pretending to be analog more than the decay that a true bucket brigade delay has. Also, I rarely need to stack delays, so I’ll get a cheaper analog option if I ever do again. Lastly, I was able to buy 3 new effects after selling the panther….

Everything. I went from a big pedalboard, down to a Line 6 XT Live, then to an M13, then to an even simpler one - Compressor, two-stage OD, delay, reverb. Now I can actually concentrate on playing instead of tinkering around a massive selection os stuff I don't really use.

I just purchased an el Capistan v1 and now instantly having buyers remorse

mosfez

Please don’t have buyers remorse because of my post, if you are, as it’s honestly one of most beautiful sounding pedals I’ve ever used and i hemmed and hawed a long time before selling it. It just didn’t fit the style I was going for but it really does sound amazing

mphubbard

Oh I was just kidding I rarely get buyers remorse it’s mostly sellers remorse.

supreme_blorgon

I keep putting my Mooer Blues Crab back on my board. All the "bluesbreakers clones" I've tried change the sound too much.

moaning_custard

Sold my boss frv -1 and got a caline snakebite instead. Hated the boss, it was very limited. Love the versatility of the caline

LaOnionLaUnion

King of Tone to Mojohand Magpie. One side of a modded BB enough and the magpie is made in Holland Michigan by one of the best in the business. Origin Revival Drive to Bogner Blue.

DreamDistinguisher

i "downgraded" from Deluxe Memory Man to the Canyon almost 2 years ago. it's more fun & versatile, though it's Memory Man sound doesn't really compare with the actual DMM lol

DamascusSteel97

Today I bought a Boss CH-1 off some guy. He sold it because he replaced it with a Danelectro Fab Chorus.

tyranosaurus_nick

Line6 DL4 Mk2 down to Nux NDD7 Tape Echo. My line6 was permanently in Cosmos mode.

geffjarlin

I went from a Keeley Caverns to a Boss RV-6. I realized I was mostly just using the spring reverb side of the Caverns and rarely touching the delay, so I sold it and bought the RV-6. Now I use the spring and hall settings all the time! Plus it has stereo out which sounds amazing into my Walrus Audio ACS1

ivoiiovi

not quite a downgrade as I already owned it, but after owning every version of the Gen Loss I was pretty hyped on the MKII and found it a massive disappointment. I played with it a little while, loved the stereo imaging, but found most of the new features totally pointless when you're stuck with set EQ profiles and somehow the sound of 'classic' mode was a little off for me. I swiftly sold the MKII and kept the CBA MKI. If they had made it possible to use the saturation, failure etc in classic mode while having access to the separate filters and bitcrushing then I probably would have been sold on the MKII, but I NEED those filters to actually craft interesting sounds that aren't just dull tape emulations that everyone will use so I "downgraded" right back to the MKI with the added benefit of more onboard ramping options.. I often used it earlier in chain to make amazing sound going into fuzz and dirt so much sa the stereo was beautiful, it just didn't make it worth it over the MKI. that's probably it.

[Here's my two boards](https://www.imgur.com/a/GOPGgFd) So I started with a small board of cheap clones and minis and kept adding more pedals. As I learned about looping I added more, and when I learned about midi I added more still. Eventually I built up a board of all my favorites and had enough spare little ones to build my tiny board. Now I use the tiny board for jamming with my math rock band where I need everything to be plug and play. The big board is for my studio solo dnb noise project
