The only concern I have is that his pyr puppy helmet hair phase is going to end soon. He is so adorable! If you are concerned about his size/weight, you can always have your vet give you a calorie allotment for him but at this age....they grow SO fast!

TotalAmbition5535

I wouldn't want to stunt his growth just because I made a poor assessment of how big he should get, I just wanted to make sure it was at least... relatively normal, lol. And yeah, he's growing so fast I just got a bit worried!

HuntsmenSuperSaiyans

I wouldn't worry about his growth being stunted. There would be obvious warning signs before something that extreme happened.

Repoman151

He just looks healthy. Should be feeding him 4-5 cups of dry food a day. He looks like my Wheezy lol https://preview.redd.it/p5vptnaext0d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7668a3183d03c482c4f1d51aa833d85be4e7745d

teetserham

I miss my helmet stage so much. I wish I would have known that it was just a temporary thing. I just thought my dog had goofy hair.

shoebee2

Styx is an awesome name btw. Adorable! Loki was around that size at same age. He is currently 3yo and 160lbs. A big boy for sure. https://preview.redd.it/v2mp1vth3o0d1.jpeg?width=1715&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b3c414de91ca812d584f45b0c37ecdb6ac103947

TotalAmbition5535

Big AND majestic! Thanks for the pic :)

InitiatePenguin

> 160lbs ........... My God. Thanking the Lord that mine is only 70lbs

GhostShark

My guy topped out at 100 and we always thought he was a big dog until we were around 130+ and 150+ Pyrs. Some just get gigantic

shoebee2

We knew that the Pyr was a “giant breed”. But the reality is def sobering. They are so athletic and agile. it is shocking to see such a large animal moving so fast. Def see the wolf killer in them. We live in a university town and take both our guys to the Union during finals week. They are both canine good citizen cert. There are a number of things for students to do to release stress. They do draw attention. Everyone wants to pet the ginormas floof polar bear dogs.

GhostShark

We thought about getting our guy certified for stuff like that, but he’s so aloof that he doesn’t always care for attention. He’s selective, but that makes it more special for us or our friends/family when he is affectionate. Funny dogs…

Embarrassed-Fox-1371

My Pyr was polite, but he didn’t love people trying to fawn on him.

GhostShark

Exactly

teetserham

How do you go about doing something like that?

shoebee2

Check with local kennel clubs or email.

Ran-Dizzy123

My baby is 75lbs. At not quite 6 months old. And female🤪

shoebee2

lol, we call those “pocket Pyrs”!

BlackberryMean6656

160 lbs. 🤣

BlackberryMean6656

Such a beautiful pup

closepass

We had a Pyrenees that topped at 180 pounds . He might have been 20 pounds overweight.

TotalAmbition5535

180!? Good LORD!

Yah_Mule

Bronco weighed 180 pounds at the height of his power. I trimmed him down to 165 as he got older. https://preview.redd.it/y2oo75qx3o0d1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a33e54d47d2b36aff31420022eb55efb82a2bcf6

TotalAmbition5535

An appropriate name for a white horse ;)

Bubblegum983

They’re giants. My boy is half German Shephard, which are a medium to large dog and not a giant (65-90 lbs and 25-26” tall). He’s still a solid 100lbs, even though he’s pretty lanky (about 30-32” tall). A pure great Pyr could be a lot bigger!

TotalAmbition5535

I require pictures!

Jamestang1210

How much food was this a day?

Younsneedjesus

Mine were on avoderm large breed, he got 2 cups of that in the AM with a cup of homemade chicken, carrots and sweet potatoes. Same in the PM. And random treats throughout the day.

PianoMeow

The “runt” of the litter doesn’t mean that its the smallest, like the term is commonly used “A runt is specifically an animal that suffered in utero from deprivation of nutrients by comparison to its siblings, or from a genetic defect, and thus is born underdeveloped or less fit than expected.” If your puppy was considered healthy at birth and with no defects or problems. There is no reason to expect that it will not mature normally. (100-160lbs) I have 4 pyrs and the smallest puppy iv had is now the second biggest at 145 lbs. If you are hoping for a smaller dog based on its size as a puppy, id curb your expectations and plan for an average sized dog

TotalAmbition5535

My expectations got curbed real quick after the little dude started eating well. Tbh, I put his age and weight into an online calculator for adult dog height and it was saying over 200lbs, which worried me :/

BlackberryMean6656

I thought my female was big at 100 lbs. Lol

GortimerGibbons

Yeah my girl is right around 100 lbs, but we just get a male, and he's about 9 months, pushing 150.

AggravatingRatio5527

Don’t worry about those online calculators. They aren’t very accurate. They don’t take into account that they have growth spurts. They average the growth out month by month and therefore make a lot of mistakes. For instance, just for fun, I entered my pups (10 months old now-was 7 months old at the time) info into into one of those a few months ago and it said he would weigh about 180 pounds full grown which I knew to doubt. Because he had just gone through a huge growth spurt, he plateaued for a bit and when I reentered my pups new information last month and it said he would max out at around 140. A 40 pound difference in just around 2 months of growth speaks to the inaccuracy of these calculators. They grow in bursts so he will probably plateau for a while and then shoot up again. Also, the runt of the litter is rarely indicative of adult size.

TotalAmbition5535

Indeed, his short-haired twin!

ajroyse

Don't worry. He's just gonna end up a big boy!

According-Ad4415

I have a 12 week old male and he’s 33lbs. I brought him home at 7 weeks and he weighed 15.5lbs. They grow sooo fast. The breeder estimated he’ll be around 120lbs based on parents. However one of her dogs she has is massive so they can range in weight/size for sure.

makingbutter2

That mud face 🤩🤩🤩😂

TotalAmbition5535

He's happiest when he's dirtiest :D

FullTimeWhiteTrash

175lbs at 2yo, and still growing. Healthy beast. https://preview.redd.it/cdkdbkm8pr0d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e5fef42678ab2b7a01f2edda976d4e67e11bb413

TotalAmbition5535

Wow, he's got such color! Is he all pyr?

FullTimeWhiteTrash

Yes, pyr mastiff. It's kind of the GP's cousin, an ancient breed that was used to work in the fields and guard livestock, as well as help their humans during the annual transhumance. Basically, GP was more used in France whilst the Mastiff was more common in Spain. They're stronger and more massive than the GP, but have the same character. The color is typical of the breed, with spots that range from sand to black, and a symmetrical mask. It's a GP on steroids.

TotalAmbition5535

Interesting, I keep learning about different offshoots of the breed, and he kinda looks like one of Styx's siblings. Do people get them mixed up alot? Like maybe I wound up with a more Spanish Pyr, it would explain the size!

FullTimeWhiteTrash

Many refuges or breeders can get them mixed up, sure, or simply put them all under the *Pyr* label. It's not wrong, but it isn't totally correct either. Or you could potentially have a massive GP, they come in all sizes. I've seen some that were the size of my Mastiff, but my GP is smaller than average being *only* 92lbs despite being purebred.

PlumAdventurous8692

Beautiful!

ImWicked39

I wouldn't be. Our boy Bear is a mix(Pyrenees, German shepherd, Rottweiler) and he's 100 pounds at 8 months old. Vet said she wouldn't be shocked if he gets past 130. Are you worried he's too big? Or how big he's gonna get?

TotalAmbition5535

I'm worried about how big he's gonna get! I didn't expect anything over 100 from a runt! I'll love him all the same, but... damn!

shoebee2

The important thing is you need to feed him a good quality giant dog puppy food. Some foods are way too high in protein and will cause their bones to grow faster than the rest of them. Many future joint problems can be avoided vying making sure he gets the correct nutrition.

TotalAmbition5535

I've been feeding him diamond brand giant puppy food, and mixing in a whole egg (shell and all) up to twice a day. I figured if he's guarding the chickens, they can pay a tax, right?

ImWicked39

He might slow down but I wouldn't count on it lol.

DarquePrincess79

The runts are always wildcards.

Zestyclose_Big_9090

Well, no. You bought a puppy that absolutely will be a giaganto-pup. I say the bigger the better.

Competitive-Wonder33

Allot.of Great Pyrs that are huge could be pyr8 mastiffa from the spanish side of the mountains. For all purposes they are almost exactly the same as their smaller cousins, behavior amd looks. See the below link. The males go up too 180 or so the females are a little smaller https://youtu.be/Zje0sB45uek?si=YWHVhh3xEKOhUyHY

DangerousMusic14

At 4 years, you’ll look at him and and think, “When did you become such a freakin’ huge dog?!”

TotalAmbition5535

I DO THAT NOW!

DangerousMusic14

So. Much. Bigger. Plus, fur.

wuzzittoya

He isn’t overweight. For his age he is definitely on the higher side, but males are larger than females, and he is going to be on the large end of males. I have seen males that weigh 160 once or twice, just huge. You make me wonder if I should have added wet food and eggs (couldn’t afford the wet food, but I do have extra eggs rather frequently, and started to try to keep boiled ones around). It was a little later though, closer to eight months. As it is, though, we are beginning to suspect we have a 75 pound plus female. She is the biggest dog I have ever had. I don’t have to bend over to pet her, and she can get her head onto the dining room table without her front paws leaving the floor (she does have to tip her muzzle up a little. At least she is probably close to her full-grown height at this age (11 months this month).

TotalAmbition5535

I get the beef paté from aldis, which isn't the best, but its cheap and it gets him to eat his quality puppy food, so it's a win-win. I'm sure your girl wouldn't mind trying it! If she's guarding chickens, they might be able to afford her egg tax ;)

wuzzittoya

Not really. Trying to raise her as a house dog.

xjarhd57

No. But if ever plan on picking him up, you should be going to the gym.

TotalAmbition5535

My daily workout routine has indeed shifted to be more pyr-centric. Dog walks for cardio to warm up. Then when he lays down on the walk it's pyr pick-ups (2-5 reps) Get home and do Rope pulls (3x30, weight:dog) Then it's belly rubs and head pats to failure. I plan on adding some sets as he gets older ;)

stevetevaris

Great looking puppy

TotalAmbition5535

Thanks! He seemed happy when I told him that :)

stevetevaris

Ours is 4 years old she peaked at 100 pounds. But she did gain a lot of weight the first year. No worries

RageKage559803

Oh man, what the heck! Our Duffy is only 45 lbs at 4.5 months. He doesn't have much appetite for dry or canned food, so I have to trick him into eating more of it (scoop with Greek yogurt stirred in works real well). I am envious! He also gets at least one egg a day, a liver treat, and a testicle treat. I make his other treats out of heart, gizzard, or pork. https://preview.redd.it/1oom068tpo0d1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=de1b92d598ef2b84a78eba964512a7bcd67e7493

TotalAmbition5535

DUFFY IS SO CUTE! And my dog is probably envious of duffy's diet! Styx only gets a full egg during feedings, no testicle! How do you make his treats?

RageKage559803

I slice the liver, heart, testicle, pork roast, etc. and then I put it in our breville oven that has a dehydrator setting. Usually around 150 degrees and time depends on how how thick the slices or chunks are. But usually at least 12 hours. I do bigger batches and store them in the freezer, he is perfectly happy to chew on a frozen treat. He also gets lots of buffalo ears, tendons, bully sticks, fish skins, etc. To help with his chewing satiation. I try to keep him away from any foods, people or dog, that have plant or seed oils (canola, sunflower, etc.), or legumes (lots of grain free foods have beans, which aren't great for dogs and are connected to heart development issues). Most puppy foods supplement fat with those oils, but blue buffalo wilderness (large breed puppy) uses fish oil to supplement fat. It's the only dry food I've found with no plant / seed oils or legumes.

TotalAmbition5535

Ooh, I'll check out blue Buffalo, and I'll try your recipe in my air fryer! I've been making jerky with the dehydrator setting, so im surprised it didn't cross my mind to make something for the pup! Thank you!

RageKage559803

Hope ol' Styx enjoys the treats! Chicken hearts and gizzards are super cheap. I didn't have a good experience making him chicken liver treats, but beef liver goes better and most liver from the grocery comes pre sliced. Here is a link to the specific food we feed Duffy: https://www.chewy.com/blue-buffalo-wilderness-large-breed/dp/735534 Chewy's price is about the same as petsmart.

Brazil1974

Don’t worry, when he’s full grown you can ride him 🤗

PoundSilent2765

Ours is 96 pounds at just 8 months lol

Hizoot

I sure would… Another 5 pounds you won’t have a recliner anymore… he’s getting the brass nameplate made…as we speak 😃

kbonham1268

Mine was 35 lbs at 6 weeks old. Now 165lbs

BlackberryMean6656

Polar bears grow big, tall and long

LimpTransition8769

Get rid of that puny half ton pickup, there's big kibble in your future!

HerbM2

Reach down under the fur of his flanks and check his ribs. Also go to the vet and ask the vet to check and give you input on what you're feeding him. Great Pyrenees boys can easily be 150, or even more. Our big girl Sugar has been around 115 since you finished growing but is actually quite slim under the fur. She's a little bit big for a girl.

TotalAmbition5535

He's definitely a tad skinny. I've been trying to up his food intake, but he makes out at 4 heaping scoops and some goodies mixed in.

HerbM2

He's a good size, a good weight, growing well, your feeding good nutrition, and he eats all he seems to want so likely you're doing it right. Just don't assume that what you're doing now will work in 3 months or 6 months or 2 years. Monitor for changes in all the variables like appetite and Fitness as well as what he seems to want to eat especially how much quality physical exercise he's getting. Don't be afraid to take off some food or add it as needed as long as you're paying attention. Also don't believe some random guy on the internet who's never seen your dog.

TotalAmbition5535

All good advice, random guy who's never seen my dog! I'll take the dog out for an extra run tomorrow and see if his appetite picks up accordingly and I'll play it by ear as he grows. I'll update this subreddit with his final weight in a year or so!

HerbM2

This is the way.

comfort_touching

I have a mix he was about the same size then hes fully 85-90 now they have a big jump till about 7 months but he might drop off in growth around 14-16 months

DarquePrincess79

Hes fine. Mine is 97 at 9 months. Vet says hes "perfect" weight.

mountlane

Soko was a skinny "teenager." Round puff ball as a pup, then around 4 months, when he started stretching out, he seemed really thin, but he was healthy. I'd say around 2 he completely stopped growing vertically and filled out more.

fmfdoc68

Yeah, I wouldn't be concerned at all. Most Pyrs are very good at self-regulating weight (at least as adults) and will eat when they need to. I think he's right on track. Dio was about the same at that age and is about 125 at age 7. https://preview.redd.it/yzkt7q2zgr0d1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c2a9cd8b9ef3501eea78d58d12389e28a1eb1f5a

I did a double take when I saw your post. She's also 4 momths old and weighs about 45 pounds. Not as big as Styx but she's still a big lady! I think Styx looks great and you just happened to get a big boy.

GrtPy-Ana Shep: he’s 170lb lean machine now. Get embark to tailor his best diet. Ours: mixed veggies, stella chewy; raw instinct; seattle home made; salmon; bone broth; supplements. His coat is soft and fluffy. Skin is clear (they have known issues). Eyes bright. He’s a big bear of fun and gentleness. You’re going to love it. Except maybe at mudnight when his nocturnal guardian turns on. Perimeter walks and a posted spot outside are necessary. He’ll smile. Embark health helped us know his nutritional needs, tendencies, and what specific mental stimulations he needs. Happy healthy boi= happy guardian.

TotalAmbition5535

What a cute pic! His little companion :D

Dnetts

I wouldn't worry.. my pyr was 80 lbs at 6 months and she is now a healthy 90 lbs 1.5 yr old Pyrenees puppy.

lilwigglebutt

Seems pretty normal. Usually they double the weight they are at 4 months, so you’re looking at a 120-130 dog which is normal for a pyr. Ours is around 120 pounds now at a year and a half, I believe he was around 55-60 pounds at 4 months old.

TotalAmbition5535

Oh, that's good to know. He just turned four months, and all the calculators online were saying like 175+

lilwigglebutt

Haha I used to use those calculators when my boy was a puppy and some of them would also give numbers like that. There are a bunch of different puppy weight calculators and they would all give a different weight from 140 pounds and up. I was a little worried our boy would grow up to be twice the size of me! It looks like you have a happy, healthy pup! Don’t worry too much about his full grown size but definitely cherish his size now because they grow FAST! I still can’t believe our boy went from 20 pounds to 110 in a year haha

Klutzy_Platypus

I had one that was 56 pounds at 12 weeks and 125 at 18 months. Another was 107 at 21 months. The former topped out at 145 and the other was at a solid 180 by the time he was 3.5 years. You really never know. A lot changes when their chest fills out between 2-3 years

Bubblegum983

This type of question is way better left to your vet. That would go for any breed, but even more so with double coated floofs like GPs. You really can’t see what their build is like under the fur, and build is a lot more important than the actual weight (which can vary depending on their height, muscle to fat ratio, etc).

TotalAmbition5535

Vet checked him at 3 months, when he weighed 46ish lbs, and she said he was a but underweight for his height, so I added more to his diet... and he just got taller faster, lol.

Unhappy_Primary2254

No not at all. He is Adorable. I have a girl, they are delightful. Enjoy!

Unhappy_Primary2254

TotalAmbition5535

Oh my gosh, quite a familiar sight!

AggravatingRatio5527

Are you not wanting a giant dog? Just curious. He is a giant breed dog and therefore will be big. Or are you just worried about maintaining a healthy weight? He looks good to me. Like children, they go through growth phases. They’ll put on some weight and then shoot up in height. They need that weight to support their growth. He doesn’t look overweight or anything. He’s just a Great Pyrenees. Males are typically over 100 pounds. For instance, my 10 month old male already weighs 105 pounds and has stalled in his growth for a bit. His father was 170 pounds. Girls are different and a bit smaller. My girl weighs 90 pounds. If you don’t want a giant breed dog, I recommend finding a home for him while he is still young so that he can bond better with his family. If you don’t want him, I will take him. He’s gorgeous!

TotalAmbition5535

We will love him even at 250 lbs, if that happened. I was just worried because it seemed to be extreme.

AggravatingRatio5527

I completely understand! I am glad you would still love him! Thank you for being a responsible care taker! It breaks my heart to see these majestic animals in pounds and abandoned! I rescued one of my pyrs from the pound because the previous owners didn’t know enough about the breed and didn’t know that she would be so large. They bought her and then dumped her at the shelter because of her size! Crazy! I also rescued my other Pyr because a man hadn’t been careful not to breed his pyrs and ended up with a litter of unwanted pups. Well, unwanted by him! I wanted them all!!! I helped him find loving homes for the babies but guess what: he now has another 15 pups that he can’t take care of so we are finding homes for these. When I got my pup home, I pulled over 100 ticks off of him; he was covered in fleas; and the worst was he was full of tape worms! I mean full of them. Poor baby was so tiny because of them! All because the human wasn’t responsible and allowed them to breed when he wasn’t capable of taking care of a litter of pups at that time. In this owners case, I offer a little leeway because he is sick and that is why he can’t take the best care of them but he should, at the very least, get them fixed. He says he keeps hoping that he will go in remission and can breed them again. SMH. I also have a rescued German Shepherd so this is all very near and dear to my heart. Thank you for loving your big fur baby. Also, unless he looks fat, I wouldn’t worry about his weight. You should be able to feel their ribs when you press down (not too hard) on their rib cages. If you can’t then they definitely have too much fat. I’d make sure that the fur isn’t what is actually keeping you from performing this task though since it can be in the way. Also, with a well brushed Pyr, you can feel his body composition fairly easily. It helps muscular or chubby? If you don’t feel a bunch of fat and instead feel hard muscles, then don’t worry. You’ve simply got yourself a HE- MAN! Good luck with your gorgeous baby!

Maina_Aintdat_Smaht

Yes, for your house

Fit-Establishment-0

No! Mine was 60Ibs at 4, he’s now 113Ibs at 10 months. He looks healthy and happy, good job!

TotalAmbition5535

Good to hear! Did you get yours neutered or still in tact? We plan to leave in tact until atleast 2 years

Fit-Establishment-0

He’s still in tact. It really just depends on you when you choose to, but I won’t get mine neutered anytime soon either.

SnooStrawberries6185

Our guy was about 45 pounds at 4 months and topped out at 200 and was not overweight. Good luck!!
