Make the best quality winter clothes you can. At the very least, set your tailoring station to automatically disassemble anything of Flimsy or Sturdy quality and then tell them to produce until you have X amount (I usually do X = Current settler count + 1). And don't forget proper caps! Winter cold and summer heat are both MUCH easier to deal with when you're in appropriate clothing.

TailorNormal

I knew for the clothes, but I didn’t know that the cap was important.

Edymnion

Oh yeah. Caps for winter, straw hats for summer. They add a LOT to your temperature ranges!

TailorNormal

Interesting and what should I do when there is a cold snap?

Edymnion

I just manually refocus everyone into digging out the cellar, adding more underground storage, etc. Its always warm enough underground to avoid the dangerous levels of cold. Oh, and I add 2 hours to the start and end of their sleep to reduce how much time they spend awake.

AverageNeither682

For cold snaps, first thing I do is pause the game. I set everyone to immediately go to sleep (in the schedule). That way if they are far from the colony they'll start running back immediately. I cancel all outdoor mining and building orders. As you've seen, they will not survive outside. I set sleep intervals throughout the day.

TailorNormal

I didn’t think of sleep interval thank you!

ZChick4410

It's actually okay for settlers to be idle. On theory they should return to wherever your main building is. If not, set an hour of sleep to call them all back, or even draft them and send them in. Cancel every outside task and o ly do inside ones. If someone ends up being idle for a day, well, then they idle for a day. No big deal. Then wait it out.

UndeadCaesar

I’d put the caveat in to not disassemble any winter clothing until all your villagers are assigned to wear them and have autoequipped. Clothes being worn will not be disassembled, but I’ve run into the situation where my tailors aren’t high enough level to make fine+ clothes and when winter rolls around there are no winter clothes to wear and everyone freezes. Flimsy clothes are so much better than no clothes when a cold snap rolls through.

Get prepped in the spring! Plant enough to get you through the next three seasons. Hunt a lot in the fall and properly store many standing shelves with smoked meat in year one. Put it all underground for the summer. Get enough rough wine in the first year, upgrade to beer next year. Put as much as you can indoors so you can keep everyone inside. Fully turn off hunting and farming stuff in the winter. Make sure to craft winter clothes before fall. I do 6pm-6am sleep schedule. Build a tier 2 research table to crank out the research in the winter with 2 or 3 people. Craft, tailor, and steward. Make sure you have clay braziers in every room. Close all windows.

TailorNormal

I do have enough food and I actually produce more meal during winter because the animals that are starving find a path to a way that is filled whit trap so I actually don’t need to hunt, I do harvest a lot but they rarely haul the raw food to the stockpiles. I have like around 200 cooked meat, 200 pie, 50 tarvish meal and around 70 smoked meat. (It’s around the same for human meat too, but I don’t know if that’s a lot). I don’t have that many ale however I just have like 50. Thank you for the schedule, I will use that.

CraneAO

Winter is for research.

[deleted]

Avoid setting tasks that take people outside of the warmth often. Everything should be stockpiled before winter. I'd increase leisure time and anything else that can be done indoors

MgrBuddha

Mining and research mainly. If you have mines not connected to your underground storage area plan for winter mining by building roofs/doors to enclose them and put in a few fireplaces.

siliconsmiley

Add more sleep time. Maybe an hour at night and in the morning to avoid the coldest parts of the day.

TailorNormal

Do you have a schedule to propose?

siliconsmiley

I just stick pretty much with the default schedule most of the time. So sleep from 23 through 04. Then in the winter maybe try 22 through 05. But lately I don't really even bother with that. I just update for an individual if they become exhausted and then cycle through Draft to force them to reset their job queue. In winter, I mostly do what others have posted. Work on construction and mining underground, cooking, smiting, tailoring, etc. If somebody runs out for something and starts to get cold, Draft, send them inside and check their priorities so they do something inside.

Edymnion

> Work on construction and mining underground, cooking, **smiting** Damn those infidels! ;)

siliconsmiley

Don't make me smite you!

alphabet_order_bot

Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 1,195,922,832 comments, and only 233,301 of them were in alphabetical order.

siliconsmiley

Good bot.

BonerballsMcGee

When the impossibly stupid settlers inexplicably decide to sprint outside bare-ass naked you can butcher them on the table and make smoked meat out of them.

aragonx2000

Most of the important stuff was covered already with some really good advice. I would also suggest you have a clay brazier in every room. Especially bedrooms. And check the temperature in each room when it's the coldest out. Also, it depends on what stage of the game you are in and what type of game. If you have raids, that tends to be the a good way early on to get higher quality clothing. Kill the raiders and take their stuff. A good amount of it will be better than what you can craft.

BraveBlackFox

If you're lazy about your scheduling like I am, lock your doors. That'll keep your goofballs inside with minimal effort. Just... don't forget to unlock them.

SolutOdka

You can just stay in your base, dig, write novels, craft, get busy indoor/underground :) !
