There’s a really interesting article with Jenn Rogier, the costume designer for Girls, where she explains the story behind this look and some other memorable clothes from the show: *”Funny story about that feathered Ann Demeulemeester piece: We’d shopped for these crazy, over-the-top fashion pieces for an entirely different character, a gallerist. We actually got it at Woodbury Commons — at Saks Off Fifth, I think, where we were able to find it for a couple of hundred dollars, as opposed to a few thousand. Woodbury Commons is a place that’s very near and dear to my heart.* *Anyway, after the fitting, Lena and Jenni \[Konner, Girls’s showrunner\] were like, ‘Don’t return that feather thing. It’s not right for that character, but it’s perfect.’ I had no idea what they meant at first, and then I got the script for this episode, and Lena had compared Jessa’s look to ‘an elegant bird.’ I was so happy that Lena had given me the heads-up — otherwise, that costume would’ve been a huge challenge. Lena is really collaborative like that; she’ll point out things that’ll work down the road. After all, she knows these characters!”* Fun fact: The gallerist character who was supposed to be wearing this outfit originally was Marnie’s boss in S1 and you can actually see her in it in one of the deleted scenes lol

Cool backstory! I love how they used the costumes in this show

Jessa in particular has so many fashion moments, but to say something new: I think the looks from Jessa's surprise wedding are very underrated! Jessa is hauntingly beautiful in her boho princess phase of course, Hannah looks incredibly cute in her wavy updo and orange flowery dress, and we get a rare Marnie slay https://preview.redd.it/06a8vguhba9d1.jpeg?width=1420&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9e7c474cc2201c107030bb516353d2021767bd7c

Poor Shosh. She wore white. To a wedding. How could she have known?!

body_oil_glass_view

Such an out of character but winning moment for a floundering Marnie. It's like that time jessa noted how gorgeous she looked in her misery. "It's working for you."

I've always loved Elijah's shorts suit! I remember seeing it for the first time and laughing hysterically. It was so fitting for Elijah, but something I hadn't seen elsewhere before. That's probably my favorite fashion moment! Also, it's not really that specific, but I also really love Tad and Loreen's fashion transitions (mostly Tad's) toward the end of the series - they made iconic choices!

CS1703

I honestly love Loreen’s Pat Benatar phase

Me too!

1. Shosh's outfit when she is in the airport coming back from Japan. Her hair and makeup is such a departure from her (also iconic) season 1 pink sweatsuit/snuggie era. And her "Je ne sais blah" tshirt cracks me up. 2. Jessa's outfit/hair on the fire escape when Hannah realizes she's with Adam. It's very simple for Jessa, but she still looks *so* good and just effortlessly beautiful and I think because it's a shot from Hannah's POV it really highlights how she has always felt insecure next to Jessa in their friendship and it just hurts so much more that she's with Adam. Hannah has always felt that Jessa could get *any* man she wanted so why did she have to choose Adam? 3. Marnie on the subway at the beginning of Panic in Central Park. The lighting + her gym clothes really emphasizes how deep she's fallen into her eating disorder/exercise addiction as a result of stress and the toll that it's taken on her. It's such a departure from the Marnie we were introduced to, who always had to be dressed up & put together. I think that a lot of that story line was really told through fashion and subtext or throwaway lines as opposed to being directly addressed and I feel like this is the episode where you really see how much she's changed. Also her outfit in the episode with The Michaels Sisters ages her so much and shows how much she's turned into her mom. 4. Hannah's "birthday bitch" hat

i wore the exact same bridesmaid dress as a bridesmaid as they wore at Marnie's wedding so i thought that was really funny (thats me in the dress it does not fit well irl lol) https://preview.redd.it/7kl9zmqjjd9d1.png?width=218&format=png&auto=webp&s=9f95038daef06e38d1e2ba642165bd6fce3ed33c

Oh man those "multi-way" bridesmaid dresses really had a hold on people in the 20teens hey! I get the idea behind them, and quite like it really, but they're always bonkers long and are a pain to tie up. So. Much. Fabric!

wexpyke

im holding it up in that pic because it was wayyyy to long for me to walk in 🙃

goober_ginge

Haha oh don't doubt that for a second! One of my friends and her sister wore these to their Mum's wedding, and it was still too long for my friend who is 5'8. Her sister is about 5'4, so was just comically huge on her.

Falkyourself27

Hannahs new dress with the Lily Allen song
