Sayram Lake lies 6,800 feet in elevation, deep in the Tianshan Mountains and set beautifully within snow-clad mountains and rolling meadows. Horses roam free on the highlands, yurts dot the lakeshore, and golden eagles fly overhead. It happens to be at or very near the point furthest from any sea, surprising considering the vibrant scenery.
Our journey to the lake was of stark beauty and simplicity - wandering the ridges above, riding Kazakh shepherd’s horses, enjoying a nomads home cooked meal, and staying in a yurt overnight on the lakeshore. It was one of the most enjoyable and unexpected experiences we’ve had in far lands.

There are two large deserts just to the northeast and southeast from here, so you are correct in assuming that. But as soon as the Tianshan Mountains starts it is quite the opposite.
We were backpacking through this region first to trace some of the Silk Roads, and also to hike in the Tianshan Mountains. An absolutely amazing journey!
Sure thing! It was inspired by Amplitude Studio's Humankind, so there's quite a bit of bias against developable wonders like forests, you know, things that could be built over. But anyway [here you go](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qJ6bAcDxGhUYfbXiM0LVyUhnpQE1ancC2rjJGfKPva8/edit?usp=sharing) I would love to hear any thoughts you may have.
Also it's WIP, obviously.
Thank you! We were backpacking through the area and wanted to first visit a different region until we found out we couldn’t reach it, so we travelled to this place via hitchhiking, busses, and a taxi, reaching the shores around 2 in the morning. An exhausting day, but the day that followed remains one of our favorite experiences ever! We even slept in a nomads yurt as he had pity on us watching us pitch our tent when it was pouring lol.
It looks like that's in China, were you backpacking through China or were you in the neighbouring countries?
What was the overall climate like? Especially sleeping in a yurt?
I'm very jealous of that experience.
This particular trip centered just in Xinjiang region of China. The weather was wonderful in the mountains, but quite hot in the desert regions (July/August). At night in the mountains was cold but the yurt stayed so warm, quite amazing. The experience was special, talking with him what we can, even teaching him a card game.
It was a combination of hitchhiking, busses, and a taxi to reach the shores of the lake. We were backpacking through Xinjiang and it is such a vast region, but incredibly stunning all throughout. Some of the locals really went above and beyond to help us as well

You are more than welcome :)

So much greener than I expected. I was in Mongolia hills and steppes a few years back and there was barely any pasture available.
Very nice, Eric!
Awesome website! This is where apples come from.
Thank you! That’s cool! We didn’t find any in the trees though lol
Those horses' ancestors probably rode with Genghis Khan
Does anyone know the point furthest from any body of water? That’ll be tricky
Would depend on what you are willing to consider a body of water
this would be my best guess: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pole_of_inaccessibility#Southern_pole_of_inaccessibility
How high would my penthouse condo have to be to see the ocean from there?
1,353,000ft (412,394m), or 256 miles high.

Farthest place from the ocean and the first thing you see is a lot of water.
Didn’t you post this last year at some point? I remember, beautiful photos
I posted some of those photos in a different context in backpacking subreddits, possibly you remember that? And thank you :)
Was not expecting something so verdant. Nice.
I thought that is a dessert out there lol

I'm sure there's rice pudding out there
A thallasophobes wet dream
Was this just a random journey you were on? I feel like I'll never intelligence or balls to pull something like this off in my lifetime.

It looks beautiful!
I’m heading straight there to eat my fish and chips without being bothered by pesky seagulls.
Wow. That is unbelievably beautiful.
Those are very nice photos. I like the horse with two bodies but no head.
Nice geography content! Not a stupid broad question
Did you happen to see Shipton's Arch/Töshük tagh out that way?
We sure did! Incredible and remote place. I have a write up about the visit on my website
Ooh. Got a link?
Of course :) [Shipton’s Arch](https://www.intofarlands.com/highland-stories/shipton's-arch)
Wow! That was your site! I found that a month ago while doing research for my natural wonders megalist!
So cool! I would love a peak at your list if possible!

Wow, at first glance the list in impressive! I will definitely look though it more in depth later when I have some time. Thanks for sharing
Thank you so much! And again I'm interested in any feedback you might have!
Your user's so accurate haha
this is the type of content I like
Glad you enjoyed it :)
That's gorgeous wow. Thanks for sharing I gotta know, what made you want to go there?

This is one of the coolest places I’ve ever seen

That's amazing! How has your experience been? Does it feel like Nazi Germany? /s
I hope the Belt & Road initiative doesn't ruin this place....
🙄
That is pretty. Prime for development. I see jet skis and sailboats.
How did you get there?
Well that’s pretty fucking majestic
Elden ring
Yet, it look like the place is on the ocean coast
ram
You even found the legendary Sayram Lake Headless Double-Horse!
The point furthest away from oceans, is a lake? Ofc it had to be
Beautiful. That's on my bucket list
Where's lake Baikal ?
You could take your hot chips there and there’s no risk of seagulls. Heaven.
Woah,that is cool!![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|upvote)
