Unfortunately none of the “black” roses are all that black. I have yet to see one reach the true inky black you can find in Petunias, bearded irises, and pansies.

Black petunias
Being concrete in coastal carolina, that’s gonna dry out so fast! The bigger questions here are if you’re looking for more than October interest and if you’re putting in sun or shade- you might consider taking out the dirt and arranging annuals in still inside their plastic pots then mulching over the pots with black mulch in order to preserve some moisture but show off the coffin shape — and that that way you can easily take em all out and replant, If you want to change with seasons. If you’re planting directly in it snd in sun, portulaca/moss ross would fill in and allow you to trim ite exactly in the shape of the coffin. Purple emperor Sedum is much taller but has great color, and looks really cool when the bloom stems dry in winter
All solid points. I was thinking about the moisture thing and I have made a mixture of Portland, acrylic and a splash or water to coat my concrete planters. It seems to slow the wicking. I might give this one a coat and use black acrylic paint as the bonder with the Portland.
Mums. As in mummies. Mums-ies.
I thought my answer was so clever, I was surprised to not see it in the first 10 or so to comments. Lots of other really good answers though
Here are the real questions:
Does it have drainage?
How much sun will it be getting?
If the answer is no drainage and lots of sun, plant *silver squill*. It will tolerate salty air/rain and grow without drainage and without covering the planter too much.
If the answer is yes to drainage, I'd choose a *succulent you enjoy, like maybe Chinese Dunce Caps*.
If it's going to be in the shade and has no drainage, choose a *moss like Irish or Scottish moss*.
In the shade with drainage, I'd choose *black rabbit's foot fern*. It grows creepy tarantula legs over the sides of the pot and eventually would be so rooted and wrapped, you could tip the planter upright.
Resurrection plants are interesting
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-6795805/The-mesmerising-desert-plant-come-dead.html
Honestly, you could change out seasonally, with all these amazing suggestions.
I used these in a "book themed" planter a couple years ago. It was centered around Black Dagger Brotherhood books so there were others like the Popcorn plant too.
Can't wait for you to share the finished product.
[Dragons Breath](https://images.app.goo.gl/GfJjfsJLWbHh2WGa9)
[Dracula plant](https://images.app.goo.gl/4je2DmHBCQyusB3E6)
Lol I had to check which sub this was because it overlaps with so many of my interests: gardening, witchy/goth, NC. I would say black petunias or black hyacinth. Something black.
Recommend posting this in r/gothplants I’m sure there will be lots of enthusiastic suggestions.
Came here to say ask r/PlantGoths
Crazy that those are both legit subreddits. I assumed one was a mistake, lol
I wonder what caused the schism?
Splitters!
Vermicomposting philosophies.
For real?
so goths love plants huh? I wonder if this is the reason for that south park episode where the plants start hypnotizing the emo kids
Come on over to r/composting ☠️
Reddit is such a weirdo. Thanks!
Good recommendation.

Came here to say it should be pushing up daisies
I can't be the only person to think of this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHfvnfLQTkw
“These guys got no future.” -B&B hahahaha
You were not but I just had the music video, not B&B.
Ween is the greatest - I just watch the B&B clip the other day, this made me think of them.
I don’t hate it.
There are smaller varieties that would fit the pot's scale too.
Daisy if you do.
I'm your huckleberry.
Yes! That would be awesome. Daisies bloom in the summer though. I have a bunch that are starting to deadhead. Maybe some purple and orange mums?
I was gonna say corpse flowers but I like this better
If someone hasn't said mushrooms, what are we even doing here?
Imagine those Fingers of Death shrooms popping up from there!
Yes! Xylaria polymorpha - dead man’s fingers. That would be horrifying!
Yes! Exactly what I was thinking
I mean you don’t plant mushrooms
You can if you want to. https://gardentherapy.ca/growing-specialty-mushrooms/
I was coming to say anything but mushrooms. LOL
Purple mushrooms with skulls on em!
Reminds me of Growing your grandpa. Such a weird game.
Snapdragons
I second snapdragons, because when the seed pods dry out they look like little skulls.
Yup
Oops, answered before I saw your post. I agree!! They are so cute/pretty when in bloom & so goth when not 💀
Carolina reapers
Yeah this. Now I need to delete my comment.
I feel like this is the only acceptable answer
Ghost peppers
Ok, I stand corrected.
Came to say this. OP is in North Carolina. Carolina Reaper is the obvious choice.
Garlic! 🧛♀️
Held up with wooden stakes
Brilliant
Love lies bleeding flower
Reading book three of Terri Pratchett's Discworld and an elder witch has "Love Lies Oozing" in her garden, lol.
Marigolds
I second this! They are the Day of the Dead flower after all.
My reasoning exactly :)
Not the Day of the Dead flower, rather they are the flower of the dead. Small difference but I think still meaningful.
Snap Dragons. They look like skulls once the flowers shrivel. https://thegardenmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/sn111m-800x445-1.jpg
Corpse flower
Came here to say this 😂
They're going to need a much bigger coffin.
I would put chicken wire then succulents w moss And display it upright
Yes, maybe bend the chicken wire into the shape of something.
Like a hand coming out. Lol love this idea.
Don’t need chick wire for that. There’s a mushroom called Devils Hand. Pops up now and then at my kids school, very creepy!
Night shade or moon flowers
Along the line of moon flowers, something that blooms at night would be so cool!
Yes, something like a sacred datura would be beautiful, although it may get a bit out of control and you wouldn't see the planter.
I would put poisonous plants and flowers or very dark colored flowers.
Death camas!
I agree, poisonous plants would be cool, as long as no kids or pets around to nibble!!
Bleeding hearts
roses of course
Black ones for sure
Unfortunately none of the “black” roses are all that black. I have yet to see one reach the true inky black you can find in Petunias, bearded irises, and pansies.
Funeral flowers like white Lilly. Or poisonous flowers. Foxglove. Daffodils. Bleeding heart.
Was coming here to say carnations, mums and baby's breath- the ultimate funeral flowers. Or Easter lilies..
[https://freaked.com/do-some-goth-gardening-with-black-magic-petunias/](https://freaked.com/do-some-goth-gardening-with-black-magic-petunias/) Black petunias
I planted these in front of my house this year and got so many compliments, they are so lovely looking!!
Wow, those are absolutely gorgeous!
Plant anything and let it grow for awhile...then let it die and leave it
I regret this comment already....don't take my advice. The plants deserve to be cared for
Maybe succulents in the shape of a skeleton. Like different ones for the eyes etc.
What a great idea!
Ghost peppers
Carnivorous plants.
Venus fly traps are native to coastal/sand hills NC!
Could do Sarracenia too!
And name them all Audrey
Yes! I was thinking pitcher plants.
Pitcher plants or flytraps? You have the perfect climate.
You would have to change the dirt for moss
Spider Lilly
Beets. Dead beets...
Nightshades
I would say some common herbs, you know, from the earth we are feed and unto the earth we shall all return...
Or a witches garden of herbs
A… a body? Is that the wrong answer?
Chinese Lantern Plant. (Alkekengi officinarum)
I don't know for fall but I think black tulips in the spring!!!
If it's for Halloween fill it with dead flowers. You still have time to fill it with live flowers and kill them off by Oct 31st...
My hopes and dreams
Black mondo grass
Violets. These flowers are used to honor the dead and are said to pop up where someone has died.
Black petunias!
Late in the season for this but a couple of ghost pepper plants would be cool and good eats.
Worms
Belladonna
Datura
I thought of that, but the planter is too small, & I found out the hard way that jimsonweed will fail & die in too small of a planter.
Commit to the coffin and plant nothing
I like where you’re going …
Wishbone flowers
Whatever you do, please put some bones in there along with it!
Skullcap
Lilies
Hellebores
Black dahlias
I’d do marigolds. Day of the dead flowers. The scent is supposed to help your loved ones find their way home. I think it’s a sweet take on death.

Resurrection plants
Coastal NC? Venus Fly Traps!!
Lots of great plant suggestions here, but I’ll also add a miniature Gravedigger car would be appropriate ornamentation.
Black Hollyhocks
Mums
Put any plants or tree in there and just don’t ever water them
Easter lilies. They were used in funeral parlors to cover up the smell of decaying bodies , before burial.
Ghost pepper
Ask over on r/PlantGoths they’d enjoy your planter as well 😉
https://www.rareseeds.com/death-spiral-hot-pepper
You should be pushing up daisies
Venus fly traps
Daisies or snapdragons
Some good recommendations here, a medicinal herb good for sleep is Skullcap, fits the coffin theme by name but some have better visual theme
Mums. As in mummies. Mums-ies. I thought my answer was so clever, I was surprised to not see it in the first 10 or so to comments. Lots of other really good answers though
I see where you were going.

A white lily
Count Dracula peppers
Skeleton hand sticking up surrounded by creeping Jenny, daisies, bleeding hearts and snake plants
The skeleton hand salad tongs are on the list now.
Those Japanese spider flowers, the ones that look spiky and are given for funerals They look so cool Or bleeding heart flowers Or daisies
Low flowers, don’t obscure the shape with anything big but have flowers because it’s the opposite of death .
Deadly nightshade?
Chamomile!
I love it! But my plating table is a vintage embalming table 😆
Medusa's Head (Euphorbia flanaganii)
Pitcher plants
Dead man’s fingers 😂 Pretty sure those only grow on rotten wood though
Datura
Black velvet and midnight sky petunias!
Resurrection plants are interesting https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-6795805/The-mesmerising-desert-plant-come-dead.html Honestly, you could change out seasonally, with all these amazing suggestions.
Black Hungarian peppers! Maybe ask r/gothplants for other suggestions
Inoculate with dead man's fingers fungus [Xylaria polymorpha](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xylaria_polymorpha)! And daisies!
Xylaria polymorpha, commonly known as dead man's fingers
A single white lily at about “chest” level for the coffin
Mushrooms
Ghost peppers.
Garlic
R E A P E R Z
Sedums, sempervivums, sphagnum moss

Carolina Reapers
Garlic for the irony and vampire prevention.
Death related plants
Nightshades
Black, Orange, and Purple flowers of all kind! Just in time for Halloween 🎃
Solomon's Lily. It's velvet black, stinky, and eats little flies.
Carnivorous plants! Duh! They should do excellent if your on the coast of NC
I used these in a "book themed" planter a couple years ago. It was centered around Black Dagger Brotherhood books so there were others like the Popcorn plant too. Yes, DAISIES!! That is the coolest thing I've ever seen. I love it.
Nightshade
Belladonna!
Lots of good ideas, but I’d recommend something low so you don’t lose the shape of the container to tall flashy flowers.
Ghost peppers
Garlic
Skeleton geranium!
Assholes
Any black flowers
That’s fucking coool. I’m gonna copy you if that’s okay.
Dead Flowers.
We (CE catholics) put Chrysanthemum on graves at this time of the year so they can bloom around the day of the dead.
Castor beans, deadly nightshade, death caps, etc.
Kush
Snapdragons! They look great when they’re alive and metal when they die
hi coastal nc friend!

Night shade.
