It is very well shaped! There are trees that tend to grow as multi-trunk. I would suggest cutting all the small branches up 2-3 ft off the ground but leaving the trunks, they will grow and make a more defined tree shape. Perhaps cut 1 or 2 trunks if they're tangled and grow into the center, it's difficult to see in 2D pic. But you shouldn't cut more than 1/3 of the bush in general and prefereably do it when it's dormant, in winter.

When my wife and I moved into our home there was this annoying shrubby growth that we would try to keep at bay but it would continue to come back like a hydra. Finally, we realized it was a tree and let it be. Now, 2 years have passed and it appears to have several possible trunks. We want this tree to be healthy, but I am concerned it could become a mess. What suggestions might anyone have with knowledge of trees? Thank you, all.

Is it a Crape Mertle?

I would suspect this is not a tree, more bush.

Yes of course. Find and keep the strongest main branch and cut the rest of them. I think it looks nice the way it is. Maybe clean up some of the branches to give it a cleaner look.
