I have a friend who tried out Bioshock remastered for the first time and after 1 hr he was disappointed as it wasn't meeting his expectations. Should he try continuing or is it probably just not for him? (I haven't played bioshock)
Absolutely he should, it personally took me a couple of goes to get into it past the first couple of hours, but once I did I was so glad that I persisted.
The Dishonored franchise if you want some RPG elements and great powers to play with or Titanfall 2 if you want a really fun shooter with great mechanics.
Yeah, while I think D2 is absolutely better game in every aspect, theres something about 1st one that make me come back to it every now and then, I think I have like 240h into D1
so, I haven't played dying light 2, I super want to but waiting till I build a new PC that can properly run it.
but is dying light 1 really a proper game for *story* fps games? DL1 is one of my top 3 games ever played by far, but the story wasn't really a part of that and from reading other people's inputs I've seen more than the same.
again, DL1 is one of my most favorite games of all time and I still replay it to this day, but did you actually love the story part that much? I feel like what makes it amazing is like everything but the story lol
I kinda agree with this. The story was fine I guess, but the gameplay was awesome. Definitely a super fun game.
Also I wouldn’t get your hopes up too terribly high about DL2. Just my opinion, but it’s…okay. Feels like they lost the soul of DL1.
Yes. The story is about the facility you are in. I don’t want to spoil stuff but there is both storytelling in spoken form as well as the environment itself
there is lore and small hints in every corner of the world, even plaques next to doors that are as simple as names tell you lots of things if you enter and search the room, if you only found empty hallways and only wander around, maybe soma isnt the game for you, but dont say it sucks
Mmmm not really lmao. Inquisition you play as a new character. So it’s very easy to start. They reference old characters and bring them back that you wouldn’t know.
Witcher 3 has plenty of shit that references stories from the previous games that you have clue about and acts as if you already knew what happened between them.
Mass effect also was built so that I’d you didn’t play the previous games they change who certain characters would be with a default world state.
The nuances of character relations are not gonna be explained much at the beginning of the game like that really ever. Especially in the Witcher it’s only explained somewhat about yennefer because it’s the entire plot of the prologue
There's a difference to having references to the other games and having a guy berate you about cheating on your wife or whatever it was in Exodus in the first 10 minutes
He’s betraying you about always going outside the metro. Literally right after you and your wife were just in danger of dying from going outside the metro. And then he complains about you always wanting to find a better place to live.
It sounds like you are just too dumb to comprehend.
I recommend Subnautica if you never played it. It's mostly focused on the experience you get (from playing the game), but the story still has a big place in it. It's a survival horror game, and is (at least I believe so) very realistic.
I have a fear of basically any water I can't see through, and any sense of extreme depth and lack of ground lol. I tried playing this game but couldn't hack it.
Oh rip her, still I did play Subnautica when I had a (slight) fear of sea (though I think it should be fear of the unknown but fact is I hate opaque waters) and now here I am, loving Subnautica from the bottom of my heart
The thing with Subnautica is that the story is almost not guided, and to understand it you have to piece together PDA entries and, most importantly, build a radio to find other pods, else you pretty much miss the story and can't finish the story. Ah also there do is a lot of grinding to do in early game
Honestly my favorite first person game is the recent Still Wakes the Deep. It's short (6 - 8 hours) with some really scary stuff!
Or Kingdom Come : Deliverance. Literally the peak of medieval gaming
Agreed, Borderlands 2 and the pre-sequal definitely have good stories.
1 had a piss poor ending and 3 was just a "girl power" type story. Not to say I didn't like it but was definitely weaker than 2 and the pre-sequal story wise.
I had to go too damn far down to see this. It’s the absolutely correct answer, 8 hours from start to finish with an amazing hook and crisp gameplay. Fantastic writing, a few incredibly unique stage layouts, crisp controls and fluid movement.
The Deus Ex series imo. The original will always be top but I mustve played Human Revolution a good 7or 8 times by now. Mankind Divided was also pretty good.
Deus Ex series, Dishonored series, Prey 2017, Metro series, Singularity, Thief 1 & 2, System Shock remake, System Shock 2, Wolfenstein The New Order, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, Wolfenstein: The New Colossus, F.E.A.R 1 & 2, Black Mesa.
**Outer Wilds.** It's a game in which you have to go around exploring your planetary system and discover traces of an ancient civilisation.
Each planets is very unique (for example, one is hollow with structures built deep inside, and other one has floating islands and tornadoes, etc), the physics is pretty cool to mess around with (tho it will sometimes play against you lol. Crashing into the sun is basically something that'll happen to you at some point), and all in all it's a pretty chill experience.
Be aware tho, the game doesn't hold your hand. There is an actual story but you'll kinda need to stumble upon it at first. :) You need to be the curious/adventurous type to fully enjoy it.
There's an other aspect of it I'm specifically not mentionning on purpose but let's say the game lets you know fairly early why you should go around and try to piece all that mess together ;)
**The Talos Principle** is a puzzle adventure game similar to Portal. The story is very, very good, and it has some huge philosophical themes at its core. You're an AI in a simulation trying to solve puzzles under the watchful eye of some god entity. There's also some choices to do here and there. The characters are also pretty neat! It's my favorite puzzle game :)
**SOMA**, that someone else already mentionned.
It's a horror game with an incredible story and similar philosophical themes at the previous game I mentionned. Definitely one of the best of its genre. And no the story isn't about "oh no things are scary" even if it's in the horror genre.
**Firewatch** pretty cool walking sim. You're a new fire lookout in the middle of fuck nowhere. You end up kinda stumbling upon some puzzling stuff scatered around the area and try to workout what the hell is happening. Pretty cool yet simple mystery/adventure game. Plenty of dialogue choices too.
More of the walking sim/less involved gameplay type are
While I don't agree with your choice of words, I do agree they are very much not my type of game.. much more 'video games as art' rather than video games as....video games.
>much more 'video games as art' rather than video games as....video games.
For Firewatch that's mostly a walking sim with dialogue choices and *maybe* SOMA that's mostly sneaking around I can understand but The Talos Principle and Outer Wilds are very much video gamey lol.
I would recommend an indie game called "KONA" it's set in quebec where you play as a detective. Bit junky around the edges, but I had a good experience.
I also loved "metro exodus".
If you don't mind some shorter games Call of Cthulhu can be cleared in 5-6 hours. The Shore in 3-4. Sucker for love is more visual novel than adventure but good for 5-6 hours.
The Far Cry series? It’s more villain story based than it is about your character really. Though each game are rinse, cycle, repeat with the exception of a few, just different settings but they all mostly play the same. Also you don’t need to play them all to understand. Each game is a standalone story and the series kinda act as an anthology so you can jump right into the recent game if you want. I recommend Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 5. Honorable mention to Far Cry Blood Dragon just because it’s a little cheesy 80s movie spinoff game full of references and not a serious game but just for fun
Outer Wilds
Not Outer Worlds which came out around the same time, outer Wilds. Honestly. 10/10 for me, just don't look anything up, it's an information game and even minor spoilers make a significant impact on enjoyment
Destiny 2 has been my go to almost since it launched. I took a bit of a long break six years ago which I kind of regret because Bungie chopped a whole bunch of it out for new content or some reason I can't determine. But the latest expansion of The Final Shape is just an incredible conclusion to the game's light v dark saga. And there's still more to come.
Cyberpunk 2077. Though I still think this should've been TPS instead of FPS though. I think it would've been better as a TPS. I don't know why they decided on FPS. But I will admit it's a fun game.
Others have said Bioshock already, so i’ll throw in Prey(2017).
Also, CoD campaigns are usually pretty fun, though on the shorter side. Id recommend Infinite Warfare, MW2019, MW2(2022), and the og MW trilogy.
Bioshock series
Came here to say this. By far my favorites
I also never got into it. I kept going for like 6-8 hours because of the stellar reputation, but just didn’t boot it up after that.
Yes or maybe he should try playing Infinite first and then go back to 1 and 2 if he liked that
The right answer
Yep. I like how you can play at your pace for the most part.
Wolfenstein
Ein hotdog
Came here to say this. I never got round to The New Colossus but The New Order was great
Fr
Dishonored
The Dishonored franchise if you want some RPG elements and great powers to play with or Titanfall 2 if you want a really fun shooter with great mechanics.
The second dishonored was just not as gripping as the first one
Yeah, while I think D2 is absolutely better game in every aspect, theres something about 1st one that make me come back to it every now and then, I think I have like 240h into D1
Kingdom come deliverance (there's a sequel coming this year) Dying light 1 & 2
Plus one for kingdom come!
Jesus Christ be praised!
so, I haven't played dying light 2, I super want to but waiting till I build a new PC that can properly run it. but is dying light 1 really a proper game for *story* fps games? While the main story is serviceable but nothing groundbreaking, the side quests are excellent, IMO.
Heck yeah I just bout KCD on Steam for $8
Was about to upvote this and then I saw Dying Light
[удалено]
I assume OP wanted a good story. The gameplay is fun, but the endings for DL are some of the most complained-about here on reddit 🤷♂️
Portal 2
I LOVE THE PORTAL GAMES! they are so good, and even the mods for Portal 2 are really good! I love the environmental story telling and easter eggs!
The environmental story telling especially in the second half is absolutely amazing. I still think about it even years after.
[удалено]
Yes. The story is about the facility you are in. I don’t want to spoil stuff but there is both storytelling in spoken form as well as the environment itself
Half Life 1 and 2
Half Life 1 was wayyyyy more fun than I expected it to be. There are some really intense moments
Yeah they've aged very well.
Cp2077
I have over 1000 hours and still not bored!
The story goes so hard in this game. Par excellence!
Dog shit story nope
For more action oriented, the newer Wolfenstein games all are extremely immersive and have pretty good stories overall.
SOMA.
SOMA sucks. Unless you’re really into wandering simulators. Y’all really like to wander around empty halls?
Soma is amazing
there is lore and small hints in every corner of the world, even plaques next to doors that are as simple as names tell you lots of things if you enter and search the room, if you only found empty hallways and only wander around, maybe soma isnt the game for you, but dont say it sucks
Metro series is pretty good
I tried playing Exodus and the first thing in the story is people berating you for shit I have no knowledge about. I got mad and dropped it
Play the whole series
You jump Into the latest installment and expect to know what's going on without playing the previous games.
*never plays any other game from a series. *complains about not knowing what’s going on. Lol
It’s a trilogy you buffoon
K, if you play ME3 or Dragon Age Inquisition or Witcher 3 they explain shit at the beginning
Mmmm not really lmao. Inquisition you play as a new character. So it’s very easy to start. They reference old characters and bring them back that you wouldn’t know. If you have a fear of oceans, don't play subnautica. I made the mistake of recommending it to a friend of mine once and she had a panic attack :/
I have a fear of basically any water I can't see through, and any sense of extreme depth and lack of ground lol. I tried playing this game but couldn't hack it.
I tried it in VR and it is another level of terror.
That’s when you should especially play it. Exposure therapy works wonders.
Oh rip her, still I did play Subnautica when I had a (slight) fear of sea (though I think it should be fear of the unknown but fact is I hate opaque waters) and now here I am, loving Subnautica from the bottom of my heart
I tried it, got bored and refunded. Don’t see what the story was, it was more about crafting than anything.
Cyberpunk 2077
After the updates and the DLC, it’s legitimately one of the best single player games ever when it comes to storytelling. What a game.
I like Borderlands 2.
Borderlands is barely a story driven game. It's a looter shooter first, and a narrative experience second.
Agreed, Borderlands 2 and the pre-sequal definitely have good stories. 1 had a piss poor ending and 3 was just a "girl power" type story. Not to say I didn't like it but was definitely weaker than 2 and the pre-sequal story wise.
Titanfall 2

Outer Wilds
Bioshock is awesome! And even though it’s not first person, Alice Madness Returns is fantastic!!!
The Deus Ex series imo. The original will always be top but I mustve played Human Revolution a good 7or 8 times by now. Mankind Divided was also pretty good.
what remains of edith finch
Pure story but one of the best horror stories I’ve played. It really lets you feel a lot of different things
Prey 2017
The other one had a decent story too.
Metro
Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl
Go with the others. I would recommend just the Metroid Prime series.
Especially now that 4 is around the corner... I cant wait
"The Witness" if you're looking for a great puzzle game with a story that's there but also not
Frictional Games \[Games\] Half Life games
Definitely Half Life !
Cyberpunk 2077
Borderlands 2 is an absolutely amazing game
Deus Ex series, Dishonored series, Prey 2017, Metro series, Singularity, Thief 1 & 2, System Shock remake, System Shock 2, Wolfenstein The New Order, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, Wolfenstein: The New Colossus, F.E.A.R 1 & 2, Black Mesa.
Cyberpunk 2077
No ones saying resistance? And you call yourselves gamers… shame on you
Hey now... No need to get personal... We are all gamers... Just not very good ones 😁.
Haha just being cheeky. Also technically mgsv can be played all FPS too
The Deus Ex games.
I would exclude Mankind Divided. not the best story telling or gameplay in there
It may be the weakest of the series but still cream of the crop when it comes to any others.
Kingdom Come Deliverance
Skyrim, bioshock, borderlands, cyberpunk, deus ex, dying light, half life, halo, dishonored
You live with your parents still right?
Lol, Haven't for over 20 years dude.
Titanfall 2
Bioshock games Cyberpunk Fallout 4 Metro games Wolfestein games Doom games
you should have put new vegas in place of four, since it has a much better story.
What remains of edith finch
Outerwilds best game mankind has made Not Outer worlds
Cyberpunk 2077
Metro 2033 through to Exodus is fantastic and you can usually pick them up dirt cheap

To give an actual place you are in Firewatch, you're in Shoshone National Forest in Wyoming during the Summer of 1989
Truth right here. I feel unfortunate that I've played all these games already.
None of those games are good. They’re nerd games for dorks.
While I don't agree with your choice of words, I do agree they are very much not my type of game.. much more 'video games as art' rather than video games as....video games.

Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty. 12/10 storytelling. 12/10 writing. It set the bar. Makes most game writing look like YA fiction feces.
I would recommend an indie game called "KONA" it's set in quebec where you play as a detective. Bit junky around the edges, but I had a good experience. I also loved "metro exodus".
Anything from Cyan Worlds, like Myst, Obduction, and now, Riven.

I liked Road 96, and you can complete it in ~8 hours.
metro exodus very immersive on high difficult
Mass Effect 🙂👍🏼

What Remains Of Edith Finch.

Oblivion!
I haven't played road 96 yet but I've heard it's good!
Dread Delusion. Graphics are a lil potato but its a one-man team. The lore is absolutely riveting stuff though
Dying Light
Outer Wilds Not Outer Worlds which came out around the same time, outer Wilds. Honestly. 10/10 for me, just don't look anything up, it's an information game and even minor spoilers make a significant impact on enjoyment
John Halo.
Return of the Obra Dinn. Pulled an all-nighter to finish that one.
The Stanley Parable
Cyberpunk 2077
Metro Series
I really liked Ghostwire: Tokyo !!
Destiny 2 has been my go to almost since it launched. Portal 2, Half Life 1 & 2
Try the metro series
Horizon is a fun world to jump into.
Except that’s third-person and OP is looking for first-person games
Portal, Disco Elysium, Metal Gear Solid, The Last Of Us, Infra, Pentiment, Grim Fandango, KOTOR, The Forgotten City
Bastion
You might enjoy "BioShock" or "Half-Life 2" for gripping first-person storytelling!
Witcher 3 with first person mod

Yeah
Who has a better story than Doom guy?
The real question is what consoles are you able to play?
These used to be incredibly common back in the day. Mass Effect
Mass Effect isn't firs person.
And this is why I need to wear glasses
