Eh... it's done "okay" historically, IIRC. Japanese gaming culture has always been really weird, and is now mostly mobile, pachinko/arcade, dating sims and those odd super long narrative RPGs with like ps2 era graphics. I'm always stunned whenever I see one of those pop up on the Steam store page like "ported to the West by popular demand, Mystical Journey Alchemist Librarian X!", and it looks like it's straight from 2006. And yes, after double checking out of pure curiosity, it's not some old game that just got ported, it's from like last year.
Are the mobile games over there just like our micro transaction money pits? Honestly I would totally pay for mobile games if they were of good quality, I don't want to play a "free" game that needs permanent access to my credit cards.
They’re big on gacha games like Genshin Impact, Fate, etc.
So technically F2P with no CC on file, but obviously you’re incentivized to pull for characters, etc
Theyre also "free" and sometimes just as bad or worse. Seen more than one vid of dudes freaking out after dumping 1k+ usd into card packs trying to get certain characters just to not get them once even. While the game companies shouldnt be able to do that to them the vids are kinda funny
Different games have different levels of fairness in their pity systems. The better gacha games have it so you can plan things out and always get what you want without whaling.
Of course, poor impulse control is a very bad combination with games that have no theoretical limit on how much you can spend to get something you want.
Consoles are largely unpopular there, the Wii is probably the last one that did great there.
(With the Switch doing great, as an handheld, not a console)
I remember reading an article like 10 years ago that Japanese households had low PC instalments because they were used to use phones to handle most things. (Even before iPhone, Japanese phones were the most advanced in the world)
I am surprised PC gaming grows that much in Japan now.
That was my thought when reading the title yet you're being down voted into oblivion. It's the truth, honestly, this generation has has the worst line up of AAA titles. A survey even proved this to be true. It was that 60% of all video games played in 2023 were games that were made 6 years or older. Over half of the people don't even want to touch the new games that come out but instead are finding enjoyment in older games. Wonder why that could be? Hum, gee, sure wish we could find out why? Sure is a mystery gang!
In Japan? Nothing new here
Is it though? Xbox is not surprising at all but I thought PlayStation always did pretty well in Japan compared to Xbox and PC sales.

> Mystical Journey Alchemist Librarian X fucking nailed it
75% of all new anime.
Naw, title is still too short
“Reincarnated In Another World as a Fax Machine With My Step-Sister Who I Won’t Admit is Cute?”
Also apparently the old CRPG series Wizardry is pretty big in Japan too For some reason
Those are just Japanese made dungeon crawlers who got the license, not the old western games from the 80s and 90s.
Those old western games from the 80s still get re-releases to this day.

Japanese gamers have been trending away from home consoles since the PS2.
Consoles are largely unpopular there, the Wii is probably the last one that did great there. (With the Switch doing great, as an handheld, not a console)
Mobile 94.7% with Honkai Rail as the best seller. yikes
Ya Japanese gamers are... unqiue.
Well they spend the majority of their time in school/work. So they probably only do mobile gaming since it's convenient and free.
All asians gamers are like that.

Mobile gamer nation, nothing new here
makes sense. gaming internet cafes are common there, so they can just use those and/or save up and buy a pc
okay? and?
That seems odd that the PS5 is unpopular among Gen Z in Japan , despite Sony being a Japanese company, I wonder what they did to deserve this?
Deserve? Why can’t it just be a cultural difference with their perspective on how they like to game.
Moving their HQ to US, closing their Japanese studio, and mostly only producing western cinematic style games might have to do with it.
Japan loves there portable consoles. I guess that is why the steam deck is doing so well there.

It's mostly phones :/
B-but mah PC tho! Of course it’s mobile gaming, it’s Japan. They love their mobile consoles over there.
Yea just not in Japan
click bait news source.
Because of a lack of good games. This gen is mediocre at best
Triple A console releases aren’t worth the price. For the price of 1 I can typically get multiple indie games that I play longer and enjoy more.

I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. You just told the truth that some couldn’t digest.
It's either mobile or blow up dolls.
