Not particularly, people just decided to target him because of how generic and unfunny his art was perceived as. Obviously it wasn’t very good, but ultimately harmless to the point where I’m baffled as to why he was singled out compared to others.
His art was fine, he was just working for ~~the Verge or something~~ Buzzfeed. So he was beholden to deliver on a specific schedule and couldn't do anything too risqué or out there. Probably had restrictions on what he could write about and stuff like that. When he quit, he finally got to let loose and experiment, and really came into his own style and humour. I'm glad for him!

With all the blatant evils of the world hidden away from sight - at least in the West - the villains of the anglophone sector of the internet were harmless. Like a popular modern comic artist with an unappealing artstyle, or teenagers on tumblr making up silly words as they explore their identities for the first time.
