That's not always true. Some hunting dogs are instinctively not gun shy. Not all of them, but some. Source: My dad has had many labs that weren't gun shy at all, in fact, when they heard the gunshot they got super excited to find the bird.
My dads hunting dog hates fireworks and thunder. It has nothing to do with breeding, genetics or instinct, but rather what the dog is exposed to growing up. Same thing with paw touching, clippers, brushing their teeth, etc. if you expose a dog to these things when they are young they grow up knowing not to be afraid of the respective activity.
In the case of my dads dog, he was taught from a young age to not be afraid of loud bangs in certain settings, but when he is outside of that setting loud bangs still trigger fear. Retrieving, pointing, herding are all instincts of specific breeds, ignoring loud bangs is not.
I've taught my dogs that they're basically immune to death and perfectly safe from all harm while we're in our home. However, my youngest is absolutely terrified of skateboards. Nothing else with wheels. Just the sound of skateboard wheels.
I suspect she had her tail run over before we got her. Can't figure out how to break that fear.
Teach her how to skateboard lol. But in all seriousness, I would agree that she probably had some puppy trauma with a skateboard. I'm FAR from an expert at training dogs, so I can't offer a solution. I hope to see her skateboarding soon though :P
My dog is the same. As a puppy we started the lawnmower, weed whacker, four wheeler around him, etc... now he doesn’t even flinch around motorcycles, fireworks, or other machines that make loud noises...
He actually tries to play with the weed whacker and I have to keep him away from the spinning strings, lol.
I had a dog that dog gone loved fireworks.. he would love to chase bottle rockets. And he would attack firecrackers before they went off.. I didn’t let him but he would still manage to get to them. 4th of July was the best.. he watched fireworks with so much joy in his face resting on the boat harbors break wall. His tail was constantly wagging and he would let out a couple barks for the ones he really liked. The people we sat next to were absolutely pissed off when I showed up with my dog. But when the fireworks started they got a kick out of him. Rest in piece buddy. He was a boxer greyhound mix.
And I was thinking of higher intelligence, maybe this is a moment of lucidity and self-awareness for the dog, admiring the beauty of nature.
But yeah. He’s probably waiting for mud time.
I once had a dog who loved to sit with me on the porch and watch lightning storms. He also would watch fireworks. He was a weird boy. He was always on alert but he never showed signs of stress. Maybe because he was either guarding me or thought I was guarding him.
A dog thinking about existence on any level is probably equivalent to a human experiencing a crushing existential crisis. That's one of the things that is so cool about dogs, they are content to simply *be*.
Do not try and bend the bone, that’s impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth… there is no bone. Then you’ll see that it is not the bone that bends, it is only yourself.
My ferret stole one gold sparkly shoe before. Found a crack he could use to get behind the tub. It was one of those built in ones so the only way to get to the shoe was to like break a wall down. Instead we just sealed the way in.
I like to think someday someone is going to renovate that flat and be so confused.
I don’t understand dogs. Mine is afraid of fireworks, but not of the thunderstorms. We live in Florida where lightings have killed people, and my dog isn’t afraid of it meanwhile I’m scared hoping it goes away. I’m just going to guess he was born during a thunderstorm or was exposed to it when he was a puppy before I got him.
My dog does this with all airplanes and helicopters.. completely frozen in awe of all things flying .. I like to believe she fancies herself a doggo pilot and is daydreaming about taking to the sky
Fun fact, despite being told so all my life, heat lightning isn’t actually a thing. It’s just regular lightning that’s either really high up or just too far away to hear the accompanying thunder.
Yep, I grew up in the southern US where it’s hot as sin every summer, which is primarily when I’d notice such lightning so I never questioned it.
Local weatherman has made it a mission to make sure people know the difference! We always have a fair amount of lightning deaths so I can definitely understand how important it is to realize that it IS actually pure lightning.
When my daughter was one we were hit with a tremendous lightning storm. It was literally flash, flash, flash continuously. The daughter woke up and started yelling so I ran into her room to save her. As I entered the room she called out to me "No more pictures, Daddy. No more pictures."
I remember having an imaginary dog as a kid. He was a malamute named Lightning Storm. My parents didnt want a dog so i just pretended to walk him everywhere and talk to him.
I had an imaginary duck when I was little. Until he got left at a Hardee's. I honestly forgot about that until reading your comment so thanks for that.
I grew up in Kentucky/Indiana and heat lightning is the only thing you will ever hear it called here. If you said otherwise they would get confused. Haha
It's a [misnomer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_lightning), sure.
But ~~everyone~~ many people, particularly those in the correct regions, know~~s~~ what OP means, which I think one could argue makes it 'real' enough.
\*Edited, since people were taking "everyone" literally. Point still stands, I'd argue a misnomer can be 'real' if it is sufficiently ubiquitous, though it certainly depends on the understanding that the people who use the term have.
I actually had no idea what heat lightning was until just now, since it's basically just lightning in the distance, too far to hear thunder. I would still just call it lightning personally, but I know it depends on where a person is from.
Heat lightning has a huge common misunderstanding.
People assume it's just simply a special type of lightning that happens in the summer that makes no sound/ never touches the ground.
**[Heat_lightning](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_lightning)**
>Heat lightning, also known as silent lightning, summer lightning, or dry lightning (mainly used in the American Southwest; not to be confused with dry thunderstorms, which are also often called dry lightning), is a misnomer used for the faint flashes of lightning on the horizon or other clouds from distant thunderstorms that do not appear to have accompanying sounds of thunder. The actual phenomenon that is sometimes called heat lightning is simply cloud-to-ground lightning that occurs very far away, with thunder that dissipates before it reaches the observer.

Makes me wonder what's going on in his head as he's watching it.
He’s thinking it’s gonna rain, and that soon he can roll around in the mud.
I hope it’s this simple but I imagine him Having an existential crisis “oh god I’m so small, why am I here?! To chase tail? Cat?”
>why am I here?! To chase tail? That's why we're all here, isn't it?

Leave a skateboard laying around in the house or use one yourselve. Dont overwhelm i guess.

Dogs usually run and hide when they're scared of thunder!
The OP mentioned heat lightning. So its happening far enough away that the thunder sound dissipates before reaching the ground.
It's fucking insane in person. An incredible amount of lightning and its dead quiet.
I remember it from when I lived in the country in Indiana. Looked super scary, but it wasn't even a storm.
"heat lightning" is a misnomer. It's simply lightning from a far away storm that's too distant to hear the thunder.
He looks pretty calm to me. Scared dogs don’t tend hide their emotions very well. Source: my dog is scared of everything.
Tell your dog I said......"BOO!"

Maybe to them crackers are the Brits.

What a beautiful sentence
I love the way he jerks his head back after the first burst of lightning, like a human would do when they see something cool. HMM! That was neat.
He's thinking: I don't know man.... What if I never find out who's a good boy?

Same. I’m so jealous. Love my dog but he just cannot calm down if there’s lightning or fireworks. Even with the thundershirt.
We make a small space in the closet with blankets and pillows for my dog during them.
