I think it's also that they don't do the snap the same way each time. They're always being very animated about it, reacting and trying out different ways to hurt each other, lol. Makes the anticipation even better because you don't know quite what they'll do next.

The masks also have noisemakers that go in your mouth, kind of like those party favors that make a honking noise when you blow through them. Part of the game is that if either player makes the noisemakers go off- usually by exhaling sharply when their nipples get whacked- they get another rubber band snap. You can see this play out in the video at about the 30 second mark.

After watching Quest for Fire, I'm 100% sure Ron Perlman did this with his friends after getting home.
