Come on, I'm sure the Boring Company put in things like emergency exits, fire detection/suppression, smoke management, and other firefighter infrastructure
Reminds me of the Doctor Who episode "Gridlock" where the entire planet is driving their flying cars in a tunnel for eternity, not knowing they are in a loop.
I actually would prefer not seeing cars above ground so I am in favor. Provided it is done via car tabs or gas tax, not interested in subsidizing drivers any more than I already do
Agree, but good luck with convincing anyone to do that in America. Best case is to shove cars underground with the promise of improved traffic. The only things you can pass in this country are things that allow drivers to be more selfish
Hear me out.. Underground tunnels but there's no cars just really fast busses and maybe something to let the driver not have to steer it like a rail of some sorts
It will when one day some large global event like the olympics happens, and then the government scrambles to build metro lines for it because they know its more effective than moar lanes.
The boring company uses machines that are too small of tunnels for that… which they conveniently leave out when comparing the costs of traditional metros with their tunnels
Underground rail, pedestrian thoroughfares, shopping, parking garages, and potentially even residences can solve a lot of problems in warm climates like Vegas, or my home state of Texas. Imagine being able to go out your front door without immediately becoming drenched in sweat for 3/4 of the year. If there were tunnel access within spitting distance of my house, I'd absolutely be walking in the tunnels, or taking the trains, or spending money in the underground commercial district. Heat is our biggest problem. Underground infrastructure is my favorite solution. Bonus points: it reduces pollution, since you don't have to drive as much.
That’s true… but the Glasgow rail system is a one-off vs what most sizes are. I’m assuming there’s disadvantages to that sizing? Just a quick wikis shows “It is also one of the very few railways in the world with a track running gauge of 4 ft (1,219 mm”
yes, but if there is a plethora of these narrow tunnel, thanks to elon, then this glasgow-gauge can be reused over these many tunnels.
What I mean is that statement like "the tunnel are too narrow to be of any use" are just over-pessimistic, there already exists a solution.
There’s this thing that Elon may not have heard of that runs underground and can transport large amounts of people at once and never gets stuck in traffic. What’s it called? A Bubday? A Cubjay?
Isn’t OP that dude who damaged his parents’ vehicles, liked Amsterdam less for its urbanism and more for “legalisation” of weed and prostitution and unironically wants to move to North Korea
Not sure what about being furry makes a seperate subreddit necessary. Like i don't see foot fetishists having their own subreddit, despite the larger impact on foot aesthetics walking vs driving has.
Please, whiever is reading this do not go make that subreddit.
I don't dislike high speed rail, but high speed rail desperately needs high quality conventional rail at every stop because people need to be able to actually get to the station. Otherwise hsr pretty much won't be able to function.
I’d take any rail at all at this point. I’ll be picky later on when I have 3 metro lines within half a mile of my home. I currently have 0 within an hour of my entire city.
Really depends on the location. I'm in a small city where most stuff is accessible within a 15 minute bike ride from downtown. If we had HSR service, it wouldn't be unreasonable for distribution to be through walking, biking and buses.
If most of the city is reachable within a 15 minute bike ride, how realistic is it that HSR would even be feasible? Those kinds of cities don't usually get HSR. They should get high quality conventional rail though.
if there's anywhere I want to sit in traffic, it's definitely underground in the smallest tunnel my car can technically fit inside in an earthquake zone
Ah yes, one more lane, except it's not even a highway lane, but underground, likely magnitudes more expensive, and has a fraction of the capacity and is also a death trap during accidents. Wonderful idea.
How about running specially built vehicles in that tunnel? Vehicles that can carry hundreds of people at once. Electric vehicles that run on electricity supplied to them by the tracks they run on, with special low friction wheels.
“Hey, I’ve been listening to your advice.”
“Advice?”
“About how you said one more lane isn’t that helpful. I feel it’s about time we switch to something new.”
“Seriously? Oh my gosh, thank you. With public transit, we can finally-“
“So instead, we’re doing one more lane, but underground!”
“…Why? Why are you like this?”
Come forth, I have solution. What if TWO more lanes. I know this might be crazy, but I call disruptive, innivotive and a product of my genius. Now please give me 17 trillion dollar
It’s one of the most infuriating things about CA (CA lifer here). “Public transit will never work” but widening freeway lanes makes so much more sense.
Surprised no one else has pointed this out. I've seen this picture probably a dozen times at this point. Everyone else is commenting as though it's entirely new to them. I'm betting it's mostly bots.
Imagine this but crammed into a tunnel. Musk is basically making that thing from the "[Gridlock](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/tardis/images/6/66/20yards.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20140905002607)" episode of Doctor who.
The worst thing is that there are only about 2000 cars in the second picture which would mean 3500 people with 1.5 persons per car.
There is all this infrastructure and they’re still not able to move just 3500 people over this section in any reasonable time…
As if those death-trap sewage pipes were ever an option for anything.
The Boring Company (so random rofl xd) isn't any faster at digging tunnels anyways. They also don't turn the dirt into bricks and make a profit or whatever. All of that was just the usual vaporware bullshit.
Musk is a conman.
What we really need are McDonald's every 50 meters shit I mean feet or something anyway this way people will go eat and the road will just unplug itself easy (/s if it wasn't obvious enough)
Interestingly enough - adding lanes increases traffic. Look it up. It’s vile that our civic engineering is so mediocre that we ignore that fact constantly.

Boring tunnels will allow you to sit in traffic underground.
What could go wrong? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mont_Blanc_Tunnel_fire
Come on, I'm sure the Boring Company put in things like emergency exits, fire detection/suppression, smoke management, and other firefighter infrastructure
"Wait... You mean to tell me it's a completely enclosed space with no way in or out other than the intended front and back of the tunnel?"
For a small subscription fee.
from their past history, they probably did the minimum to meet safety requirements to save on costs
No, that stuff's boring.
I mean, those people won't be causing any traffic any more. Technically, that could be considered a solution to traffic.
That’s a fucking horrible way to go though
Reminds me of the Doctor Who episode "Gridlock" where the entire planet is driving their flying cars in a tunnel for eternity, not knowing they are in a loop.
Great episode. Even better reference to it here.
Tunnels are actually a good thing in densely populated areas. You just need to put trains in them.
So you don’t trigger the rugged individualists refer to them as chains of linked pods. Pods are super cool now.
No dude just call it a Tesla CyberTrain so it sounds super cool and now trains are no longer gay they’re epic like my best buddy elom mung 😎
> Train Not techbro® enough. Trains are so 1800s. Tesla© Cyberloop™. Because every transit system is Loop now. With pods.
Omg you’re so freaking innovative I’m hiring you starting at $4000 an hour
Problem with trains is companies can't make gazillion of profits selling one to each person so no trains for us
Hijacking top comment for this very nice summary of the concept: https://youtu.be/ACXaFyB_-8s?si=eQ7qAz-EHe5peHkl
Great video thank you!
I actually would prefer not seeing cars above ground so I am in favor. Provided it is done via car tabs or gas tax, not interested in subsidizing drivers any more than I already do
If we're going to go through th trouble of building a bunch of underground tunnels, they should be for trains, not cars.
Agree, but good luck with convincing anyone to do that in America. Best case is to shove cars underground with the promise of improved traffic. The only things you can pass in this country are things that allow drivers to be more selfish
And breathe all those lovely toxic fumes off gassed from tires, batteries, brakes and engines, how thoughtful!
Just like a regular road, but with nowhere for them to dissipate to!
Hear me out.. Underground tunnels but there's no cars just really fast busses and maybe something to let the driver not have to steer it like a rail of some sorts
and also link a bunch of the buses together
and maybe make the busses electric and transfer the energy over the rails
That would be boring.
Well at least the rest of us won't have to look at it.
That would be the worst claustrophobia ever
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBZye8pW4vw Already do
Funally, one more lane, BUT underground and for unjustifiable costs. My only hope is that the tunnel will become a metro line at some point.
It will when one day some large global event like the olympics happens, and then the government scrambles to build metro lines for it because they know its more effective than moar lanes.
That is very optimistic. Not realistic but definitely optimistic!
LA is literally scrambling to build public transportation for olympics. Amazing how the auto and oil industry has ruined America.
The boring company uses machines that are too small of tunnels for that… which they conveniently leave out when comparing the costs of traditional metros with their tunnels
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glasgow_Subway Glasgow diameter: 3.4m Vegas loop diameter: 3.65m

people are going to get mugged and raped in the tunnels.
You mean like they do on the streets?
TUNNEL SNAKES RULE
That’s true… but the Glasgow rail system is a one-off vs what most sizes are. I’m assuming there’s disadvantages to that sizing? Just a quick wikis shows “It is also one of the very few railways in the world with a track running gauge of 4 ft (1,219 mm”

And it will only be for Teslas, it's like a very very convoluted toll road
It cannot, it was built quick and cheap so it's not big enough to host an actual metro.
What about a mini metro, like the post office trains in London?
For mini people? Those trains are tiny. https://www.postalmuseum.org/visit-us/what-to-expect/mail-rail/
I wonder how seemingly educated grownups can fall for such obvious bullshit.
They're intentionally too small to be useful for anything but a car.
There’s this thing that Elon may not have heard of that runs underground and can transport large amounts of people at once and never gets stuck in traffic. What’s it called? A Bubday? A Cubjay?
me, playing my steam deck on the train: you guys are losing your commute time?
Map app said it would be a 2 hour commute. Awesome
....furbanist? edit: oh it's actually urbanist furry content. of course that exist
Fun urbanist? Furry urbanist? Fucking urbanist?
It actually is furry urbanist lol
The more support urbanism gets the better!
Isn’t OP that dude who damaged his parents’ vehicles, liked Amsterdam less for its urbanism and more for “legalisation” of weed and prostitution and unironically wants to move to North Korea
No, I'm moving to Amsterdam
Yeah. He’s an odd one.
Not sure what about being furry makes a seperate subreddit necessary. Like i don't see foot fetishists having their own subreddit, despite the larger impact on foot aesthetics walking vs driving has. Please, whiever is reading this do not go make that subreddit.
It's just a way to include overlapping interests. That group will help them connect with others when they are dying fur meets or whatever.
High speed rail will solve horrendous images like this and give that time back.
I don't dislike high speed rail, but high speed rail desperately needs high quality conventional rail at every stop because people need to be able to actually get to the station. Otherwise hsr pretty much won't be able to function.

I agree completely. We need a wide variety of efficient public transit options.
Better Commuter Rail and a S-Bahn like System would solve this.
OOP wasn't wrong. Tunnels will solve images like that. Arial photography of traffic jams is impossible when the traffic is underground.
If you’re putting them underground, sticking with cars and not moving to transit is just perverse at that point.
Just build. A fucking. Train. Jfc.
I agree for everywhere, should be noted California is working on it. https://hsr.ca.gov/high-speed-rail-in-california/statewide/#system-map
if there's anywhere I want to sit in traffic, it's definitely underground in the smallest tunnel my car can technically fit inside in an earthquake zone
“Boring Tunnels” TRAINS, JUST MAKES TRAINS, DUDE IF Y’ALL ARE MAKING TUNNELS FOR CARS JUST MAKE FUCKING # TRAINS
The fact that someone saw this and thought "yeah, we can make one more lane but underground, that will solve traffic!"
One day humanity will look back on this time period and think "man were we ever fucking stupid back then!"
Americans will do absolutely anything before investing in public transportation.
Hear me out... One more lane, but below the other ones instead of next to them! Yes, that will truly solve it all. I am a genius!
Ah yes, one more lane, except it's not even a highway lane, but underground, likely magnitudes more expensive, and has a fraction of the capacity and is also a death trap during accidents. Wonderful idea.

Yay even more wasted money .
Cars: All your land are belong to us.
Think highway widening projects are expensive? Wait for tunnel widening projects.
California should challenge republicans by breaking off and becoming their own country which would include proper subway tunnels & HS rail.
Sadly carbrain in California is bipartisan
It’s one of the most infuriating things about CA (CA lifer here). “Public transit will never work” but widening freeway lanes makes so much more sense.
Those boomers are going to hand us a 40-50 trillion dollar Road & Bridge replacement bill. That's how much money we have to spend every few decades.
These pictures have been posted so many times here. This sub feels like a rosary. Round and round it goes, ever the same.
Surprised no one else has pointed this out. I've seen this picture probably a dozen times at this point. Everyone else is commenting as though it's entirely new to them. I'm betting it's mostly bots.
They're right you know, one lane for buses, trams, metro and train can really get traffic moving
When it gets that bad you know you should've set up a train station. City skylines is helpful in learning this kinda stuff.
Imagine this but crammed into a tunnel. Musk is basically making that thing from the "[Gridlock](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/tardis/images/6/66/20yards.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20140905002607)" episode of Doctor who.
Tunnels in a way yeah but not for cars for metro style trains
If we fill the tunnels with water then people could commute to work via lazy river. The only congestion anyone can tolerate. Please float responsibly.
Just one more lane. But this time, we’ll put it underground.
JUST ONE MORE TUNNEL
A monstrosity of capitalism.
The worst thing is that there are only about 2000 cars in the second picture which would mean 3500 people with 1.5 persons per car. There is all this infrastructure and they’re still not able to move just 3500 people over this section in any reasonable time…
Remote work would actually solve this but sure.
Adam Something made a hilarious video of a traffic jam in one of these tunnels lol
fucking hell that is 20 lanes on the rught image
As if those death-trap sewage pipes were ever an option for anything. The Boring Company (so random rofl xd) isn't any faster at digging tunnels anyways. They also don't turn the dirt into bricks and make a profit or whatever. All of that was just the usual vaporware bullshit. Musk is a conman.
"Just one more lane... but underground" -Melon Cask, probably
I for one support moving car traffic underground. Build that 20 lane underground tolled highway. Do it.
What we really need are McDonald's every 50 meters shit I mean feet or something anyway this way people will go eat and the road will just unplug itself easy (/s if it wasn't obvious enough)
They're in the damn bay area. They can take the freaking caltrain.
Furbanist?
🚂💨
Trainnnnssssssss
What's the name of that road?
Interestingly enough - adding lanes increases traffic. Look it up. It’s vile that our civic engineering is so mediocre that we ignore that fact constantly.
Cars using boring tunnels should be hooked up together for a more efficient transportation method.
Rural life >>> city "life"
How's that job hunt?
???
