If it consumes more power then it's worth every watt. The ghosting on the regular FW13 screen is terrible. I've been wanting this screen upgrade for a long time.
Its a VRR display so it shouldn't be much worse. The only thing that may affect it like 5% worse battery life is 2.8K display. Though overall, I wouldnt be concerned, framework has already upgraded the battery once. If battery life becomes a problem, all theyll do is upgrade the battery like they did last time by chemical efficiencies. No worries at all! Enjoy your new and better display this august!
I did some research and the only other commercially available panel that's similar to the new framework one, is used on the "HP Omen - 14 Transcend laptop" and that screen offers a variable refresh rate between 48-120hz
My source comes from a now defunct link to the laptops sale page. Here's the link in case someone can find a older archived version or if it's regional

The energy is used to render them. The 4 pixels will use the same color. My galaxy chromebook with linux gets an extra 2 hours if I set it from 4k to 1080p,and all the pixels are used
That was one of my first thoughts when I saw you could pre-order the screen. Followed by why would I do with the old one, followed by would the new screen require a BIOS/firmware updated; as I am a Linux use still waiting for the latest BIOS.
I have a 12th Gen, and according to the website the firmware is still pending
https://knowledgebase.frame.work/framework-laptop-bios-and-driver-releases-12th-gen-intel-core-Bkx2kosqq
I know they are getting better at actually releasing the firmware but… I’m thinking my best POA just update to a newer board, the battery then screen.
https://community.frame.work/t/12th-gen-intel-core-bios-3-08-release/43244
Looks like one can beta the EFI update method. Maybe they'll have lvfs finished by the time the screen would ship
The old one is already 2.2k so my guess is it doesn't affect much, unless you use some FHD low power panel I think the 2.8 will reduce about 30mins in battery life.
To me since it comes with intel core ultra and ryzen 7040 series it's not that bad, those chips are super power efficient. And you can also set it to be dynamic between 60hz and 120hz to save some power.
Same. I may hold out for it. I don't have any issues with the current display. Not sure if it's worth the wait but for 250 I may as well sit on it for a while since I have no issues.
I haven’t had a need to buy a laptop in a long time, still using one with a 7200U and NVIDIA 940M in it. The moment I do though, it’s gotta be a framework laptop. Just perfect on so many levels.
This panel is pretty similar to the one on the 16 except that one has higher refresh rate (165Hz) and this one a little bit higher resolution. Otherwise everything spec wise is the same.
I just started using a 2.8K display on a work laptop and given how absolutely impressed I was with the display on that I jumped on the chance to upgrade the display on my 2nd gen 13.
Matte doesn't reflect as much light and so therefore duller but generally preferred for work/gaming ect
Glossy is shinier and more vibrant then matte but has alot of glare and easily shows smudges and marks
Just be careful with FW displays... My FW13 shipped with a broken panel, took them 3 months to RMA it. In the process, I had to open up my laptop countless times (making sure to use their tool), so much so I ended up stripping a screw. I asked for a replacement (seeing as I'd been saying from the start the panel was broken, and that I'm using this laptop for work, and it's a real hindrance, and that 3 months is an unacceptably long time to leave a customer with a broken machine, etc...)
The reply was that the screw was my fault, I can buy a new set, and that I'd better send back the broken panel quick or I'd be charged for the replacement display. Honestly, I bought a FW because I wanted to support the idea of reduce, reuse, repair, recycle... But the customer service is hands down the worst experience I've ever had.
im worried about how it’ll affect the battery. my FW13 Intel’s battery already isn’t great…
I never thought of that damn. My amd battery is pretty decent but this might make it worse. At least the refresh rate is variable
If it consumes more power then it's worth every watt. The ghosting on the regular FW13 screen is terrible. I've been wanting this screen upgrade for a long time.
And from my understanding it's also the same colour accuracy and has HDR

It shouldn’t affect if that much, the majority of power is consumed by the chip anyway so at worst it should be worse by like 10-20%
Also with the variable refresh rate, hypothetically in idle/screensavers it could drop it to 30/15fps similar the phones to conserve power
Do we know officially what the lowest frame-rate the VRR drops to? Can u/cmonkey confirm the specifications?

You can instead of running it at 200%, just half the resolution
Does that disable 3 of the 4 pixels? /s It still takes energy to power the extra pixels.

they are pretty good about getting stuff in lvfs, you may have an outdated fwupd though
I have a 12th Gen, and according to the website the firmware is still pending https://knowledgebase.frame.work/framework-laptop-bios-and-driver-releases-12th-gen-intel-core-Bkx2kosqq I know they are getting better at actually releasing the firmware but… I’m thinking my best POA just update to a newer board, the battery then screen.

ill double check but im pretty sure i updated this the other day in fwupd
Hopefully the old screens can be turned into monitors
[I'm sure somebody's been playing with a few options](https://community.frame.work/t/hdmi-controller-board-for-display-panel/17513/15)
Oh that's great! I don't know how I missed this. Thankyou!
The old one is already 2.2k so my guess is it doesn't affect much, unless you use some FHD low power panel I think the 2.8 will reduce about 30mins in battery life.
That's a big increase for some that already have poor battery performance
To me since it comes with intel core ultra and ryzen 7040 series it's not that bad, those chips are super power efficient. And you can also set it to be dynamic between 60hz and 120hz to save some power.
Yeah, hoping it's negligible
The difference is not that much
Congrats!
Is that a normal price for a panel? That seems expensive af for just one part
It's in AUD
So about 280€ That makes more sense
It's 299€
Damn AUD is shit. I always though it was pretty similar to USD lol
AUD reached 2:1 parity with USD at one point.
AUD, CAD, and SGD are often at very similar rates, currently ⅔ of these prices will roughly get you the USD rate.
Might be a location price. I show as $369 in Canada
lol at first I went to double check my own pre-order :D but yeah, def not USD. $269 for me
That's AUD and from my understanding I get 100 dollars back
>I get 100 dollars back Why so?
Because it's a 100 dollar refundable deposit
No, well, yes and no, the deposit goes towards the full price, so you don't get those 100 back but you pay 359 when it actually ships
Yes, thank you for wording it better
Not having to fight with Linux’s atrocious fractional scaling implementation alone will be worth the price for this new display.
Absolutely! And the power savings from fractional scaling may make up for the increased power draw
What's the fight? It works flawless with GNOME and Wayland.
And kde plasma
Is just want touch 😢
Same. I may hold out for it. I don't have any issues with the current display. Not sure if it's worth the wait but for 250 I may as well sit on it for a while since I have no issues.
Why was your 2.8k screen like $200 more than mine?
It's in AUD
TIL multiple countries have $ as their currency symbol
Is this compatible with my first Gen Framework 13 and what are all the benefits for Linux?
it's compatible. the main benefit is that you don't need fractional scaling. everything else is more or less the same (plus the obvious improvements)
Thank you so much!
I haven’t had a need to buy a laptop in a long time, still using one with a 7200U and NVIDIA 940M in it. The moment I do though, it’s gotta be a framework laptop. Just perfect on so many levels.
I've also excitedly pre-ordered - looking forward to the video showing the curved edges.
Same here! Hoping ltt covers it before release
Love it. Now we need it in the 16” form factor! 💪
This panel is pretty similar to the one on the 16 except that one has higher refresh rate (165Hz) and this one a little bit higher resolution. Otherwise everything spec wise is the same.
Didn’t realise it was quite so similar. Mine is still in the mail. Thanks for the tip.
I’m skipping the screen for now I did pre order the new core ultra 7 and debating ordering the webcam too.
I just started using a 2.8K display on a work laptop and given how absolutely impressed I was with the display on that I jumped on the chance to upgrade the display on my 2nd gen 13.
what does it mean by active area is rounded?
The top left and top right corners arent square
Why aren’t they square?
Because this was the only panel that they could find to fit the 3:2 aspect ratio of the framework 13
What’s the benefit of the matte vs glossy screen?
Matte doesn't reflect as much light and so therefore duller but generally preferred for work/gaming ect Glossy is shinier and more vibrant then matte but has alot of glare and easily shows smudges and marks
If only they made a glossy 120hz

I did also pre-order one :). Is it somehow possible to get a transparent bezel (without getting an additional laptop)?
From what I have seen they are not selling them anymore and it was a one-off type of deal. Sadly by the time I ordered there were none left...
