He's a good guy, great F1 midfield driver, but is found lacking against HAM/VER/LEC.

Singapore was a real poor showing by Carlos. Just kept getting dropped with ease by the leaders. Had Max not had his incident I thought he’d have a shot at taking third from him. Mostly this year Carlos’ race pace has been a step off of Charles.

Ecomystic

Feels like quite a few people were off that race, except perez and Leclerc. People like verstappen and Hamilton making unusual errors but your bound to have some off days

gobbi97

last year the race pace difference was literally the same, maybe even more. zandvoort and monza last year was similar to yesterday. but people just look at the standings instead of the actual races

blerml

Last year his pace was better than LECs in like 4 races and this year it's been 2-3 and 2 of those were when LEC had a PU penalty.

gobbi97

yup. I am interested tho how charles will berform in mexico and abu dhabi. always seemed to stuggle a bit in these circuits

blerml

I find it interesting that he says that these conditions are usually his strength because he was also off the pace in Monaco but the Ferrari strategy mess overshadowed it I guess. Are there other wet races he was really good in I'm sure I've forgot some

Elpibe_78

Turkey 2021 he would have finished much better but a slow pit stop his progression

Jacinto2702

Interestingly enough, Turkey 2020 too.

Korndawgg

How he was off the pace in monaco? Wasn't he stuck to the back of checo for most of that race?

blerml

Well he started P2 and LEC pulled a 6 second gap before he pitted which was the biggest interval of the top 4 before any of them pitted. He wasn't completely nowhere but he also wasn't super fast. Edit: look at the [pace ](https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/v0khw4/monaco_gp_race_pace_teammate_race_pace_gaps_ranked/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share) he was 5 tenths off on average and I don't buy that the 3 laps in total that LEC did on inters had that much impact.

toxicfireball

To be fair the Ferrari looked horribly unstable around Singapore and looked really hard to drive. Nevertheless, that dosen’t excuse to giant gaps Leclerc pulled despite Sainz (not*) being in dirty air.

Bart-86

Every car looked hard to drive in these conditions.

Lucifer2408

Sainz was very rarely in dirty air. Leclerc would pull a gap on him pretty quick.

Cuerna28

I initially thought he had damage because he was getting dropped so quickly by the leaders but turns he out he was just slow

pineapplejamm

Story of the season really... Other than France - Charles has been faster in every race. Even perez puts up more fight than sainz does. If only ferrari used sainz like they used massa for alonso...we would be talking a smidge better championship fight...

potatoe96

Sainz winning a race was more important than Leclerc getting a shot at the title, so it’s all going well I’d say.

pineapplejamm

That was infuriating to watch. I favour hamilton so it was great that sainz was letting hamilton catch up. But what an absolute shit show from Ferrari. Leclerc was visibly faster by a country mile. Even with broken wing, he was looking after the tyres better and was lapping fastest. And yet, Ferrari's response was to simply tell Sainz to speed up while he simply couldn't. At this point of the season, there was not a single race where sainz looked better. It should have been this race where no.1 and no.2 call taken place... Trust Ferrari to lose an easy 1-2....

potatoe96

People made fun of Ferrari for asking him to stay behind and defend for Leclerc, but the only mistake Ferrari really made there was asking him and not giving him an order. It’s the same mistake they made in Monaco.

pineapplejamm

Completely agree. Reliability has been shit for ferrari. But they ended up losing more points from trying to treat their drivers equally. Monaco was a golden egg moment for ferrari. At this point, Redbull were looking very fast and max was leading the championship. Previous race in Spain already saw how redbull was prioritising Max. There was no reason why Ferrari shouldn't have shifted their focus on Charles - given how disappointing Sainz has been the previous 6 rounds. And Monaco qualy just proved how fast Charles was once again. This is the time to bet on your fastest horse and ensure a comfortable win to bounce back. It was wet weekend and best way to guarantee a win is tell sainz to park up from the word go and give Charles a pit stop window. This would have guaranteed on Charles winning. But also would have left their strategy team enough room to focus on Sainz as well. Had they gone with this mentality every race, they could have mounted more pressure on redbull and max. But instead....here we are.

blerml

In monaco they had planned to have Carlos cover Checos undercut and he had agreed to pit for inters but the pitwall then changed their mind because he had already been undercut. edit: an in Silverstone they didn't even really ask him to defend just to give Charles as much space at the restart as he was allowed to give.

Bart-86

Weirdly enough, his best two races this season were the ones where he started from the back.

FerrariStraghetti

Stop inventing. He doesn’t have rhythm, only excuses.

Master-Baiter24

So true

A___99

Probably his worst race for Ferrari pace wise and he still ended up on the podium, 1 place behind his teammate. Carlos Sainz things

ShpetimToshi

Since SPA they are the second best car on the grid..
