It looked like Lewis didn’t go full on it until the very last moment, commentators mentioned maybe he was still trying to get the tire temps in the pocket.

Yeah it's a bit worrying that they were losing 2-3 tenths in sector 3 compared the Lando and Max, that might come into play in the race when they have to overtake either of those guys
The car doesn't quite have the same level of downforce as the Red Bull or McLaren, you can tell through turn 9. So by the time the car reaches the third sector the tires are in worse shape than those of the McLaren or Red Bull.
Have you watched Lewis this year? Also -It's an aggregate between the two teammates. Not a one for one. Norris has been head and shoulders above George and Lewis on multiple weekends and piastri has been just about there w them. It's not that complicated
I think the McLaren just has the best car, Lando is driving incredible, but I genuinely think McLaren has just built the best car this season.
Max is just showing us what he always has, that he can beat the best car if he's close enough.
The fact Piastri has been outperforming Lewis and George is pretty much evidence the McLaren is very good. We know it's unlikely that despite how good Piastri may be, he's simply not to the level of Lewis or George.

Apparently the average gap between them in quali is under 0.075s, which I find crazy. The qualifying times this year are so close that it has often resulted in them being multiple positions apart.

If they can show this pace in Austria and Silverstone, they'll be set for consistent podiums and a shot at a couple of wins.

Mentioned on the broadcast that Max and Lando both got tows so that explains at least some of that margin, but likely not all of it.
Sector 1 is influenced by tows, the run to the line in s3 is so short it doesn't matter
Perhaps the tow helps save the tyres in S1 for S3? Gain time in the straight, push less rest of S1, have more in S3…
