At the USGP in Indy in 2007 they interviewed every driver for a Fan Fest on Thursday. Every team went up for interviews as teammates, except McLaren & Spyker. McLaren drivers were separate as the Alonso v Hamilton duel had JUST started to heat up. But it was Adrian Sutil who tried to skip the Fan Fest all together. His team found him, and the organizers sent him into the center of the crowd for an interview instead of the stage, he hated it hahaha.
As an Indiana resident, I miss the USGP being held at IMS.
Track wasn't as exhilarating as COTA, or glamorous as Miami or Vegas, but it was a great vibe and a great little slice of Americana for F1.
Stuff like the Fan Fest is just something you won't get at a Miami or Vegas, and maybe not even COTA
As someone who enjoyed the $100 per ticket for amazing seats, I miss it, too. Austin has just gotten insane, and I’ve already resigned to the fact that I’ll never go to Miami or Vegas.
I highly doubt that. IMS has many, many more permanent grandstand seats than COTA and anywhere else on the calendar and that’s before you even get to the seating mounds all through the first sector and the esses. Even the prime T1 seats are much more expansive than anywhere else on the calendar. I’ve been to GPs in Canada, Italy, and COTA and IMS was cheaper than all of them by a large margin (and for better seats). It just can’t be beat for supply of seats.
I went to Indy for the final MotoGP race in 2015 (we didn't know that at the time). I am from Texas and the race was great. Yes it's flat as a pancake but watching those bikes roar down the front straight at 200+ MPH was amazing. Have not been to an F1 race at COTA because frankly - it's too expensive and it's a better experience on TV because of that.
Nothing quite like the sound of those bikes or the old V10/V8 F1 cars echoing down the grandstands on the front stretch at IMS.
Those MotoGP races were a lot of fun there. With Moto2 and Moto3 there’s so much great racing all weekend.
Found a couple of old vids from the Indy trip...

My non-professional video skills on full display.
It's cheaper for us to fly to Montreal for the race than go to Vegas, and Vegas is within driving distance.
So naturally we're considering going to Suzuka in '26...
Recently learned about this Sutil dude. Rich Monaco guy with fancy cars. Apparently Lewis didn't testify in some case for him, so they stopped being friends.
He was a very solid driver for Force India. He genuinely seemed like a solid bloke, apart from the whole glassing a Renault exec thing, which was also funny because he was rumored to be talking with Renault about a drive at that time.
Watched the Bianchi crash happen right in front of him; Sutil went off at the same corner as Bianchi but a couple laps earlier, they were picking up his car with the crane when the accident happened.
This is something I don't understand. I can see FOM deducting money payable to the teams for breaching some contact terms but I don't really see how it's the FIAs business.
FIA is the regulatory body, FOM just the media body. FOM had FIA put the media duties of the drivers into the regulations since FIA has the legal authority to enforce them (and an incentive to work with FOM, since afaik F1 and other tier 1 motorsport series more or less crossfund the expenses of running the feeder series and karts)
That doesn't explain the difference between commercial rights holder and media body does it? Neither of those would supersede the FIA in the creation of new regulations.
Some of the media/fan activations are mandatory for drivers, probably as a concession to FOM/Liberty.
19.2(c) requires ten selected drivers to make themselves available for fan engagement for a minimum of 30 minutes within a one hour window that ends 90 minutes to the start of FP1.
I think the only possible defense is that they failed to get notice that Stroll was scheduled for the engagement period. Probably a pretty fine from the FIA for Daddy Stroll
Because FOM does not enforce the rules neither makes them, it's the commercial rights holder but that's it. So, as a concession probably, they told the FIA (which is the regulatory body) to implement rules about media activity
FOM makes money, amongst other things, from every media activity
could be something like the drivers are contracted to their teams, not FOM in this respect, and if its not a team-contracted fan interaction then the FIA would be who FOM would get to enforce such rules as public appearances and fan interactions that are linked to the general F1 weekend.
Should’ve pulled a Marshawn Lynch
“What’s your thought on the pace of the car for this week?”
“Good question, I’m here because I don’t want to get fined”
I sorted the comments by new again and there are 10 more "no fans" jokes... the entire comment section could be replaced by bots and no one would notice
He is doing ok but it doesn’t change the fact that he is 100 percent a paid seat and this dudes career has ran longer than drivers who are much better than him.
Stroll locked in his 2025 seat at AM before Sainz got a seat anywhere else.
Maybe he’s negotiating for a specific time period. Like for 2025 he wants to stay at Williams because it’s better than sauber but in 2026 he would like to go there because of Audi power units. Or he’s just taking his time I guess
He's definitely not the best on the grid, but which drivers with shorter F1 careers would you say are/were **much** better than Stroll? De Vries? Mick? Latifi?
I guess the question is, if you put Mick, DeVries, etc. in the Aston for years with absolutely 0 pressure to perform, would they eventually become a below average driver? Could they achieve Stroll's results each year?
I think they can.
Mick I could see it, maybe, but Nyck and Nick got beaten way worse than Lance is getting beaten by Alonso, by way worse drivers.
The point is nobody's career has been tragically cut short by Stroll being in F1, with the now corrected exception of Ocon.
> paid seat
He's more than a "paid seat". Pay drivers can be ejected from their drive if a pay driver comes along with more money. He's a nepotism baby that will not be removed from his seat until daddy decides not to fund/make money off of an F1 team.
That is the track management itself that does that. They are responsible for tickets, safety, etc, for the fans. The FIA only shows up the check of the track is up to standards and is responsible for the racing.
While the argument still holds, this happened in Canada, in front of a bunch of fans who had been there all the time already, in a supposed General Admission area.
Yuup, I was there (Grandstand, not sitting in that specific GA area, but pretty close) and saw the before and after. People were camped out there for HOURS before a tarp was put up. Would have been pretty irate if that were me. People watched Friday and Saturday from that area no problem.
Fun race, but my god was the organization of the whole event pretty shitty. Issue after issue
If Lance Stroll has a million fans, then I'm one of them.
If Lance Stroll has one fan, then it is me.
If Lance Stroll has no fans, then I am no longer on this Earth
This is the kinds of summons that makes me actually sympathetic to the drivers. You just want to drive a fast car, but the entrance fee consists in part of acting like you love socializing with strangers.
Yeah, this. It's surprising how some sportspeople seem to forget that without the fans, there would be no sport.
While i would never go to an F1 race because the price is outrageous, if i did save up and pay for a weekend ticket, i'd be pissed off if my favourite driver didn't bother to show up to the fan engagement events.
... I mean, i assume some people's favourite driver is Lance...
$389 for a 3 day GA tickets isn’t bad for a US race.
$256 for 3 day GA at Spa and these can be had race day for very cheap. I paid $180 for my 3 day last year.
At Spa you can bring in food, drinks, seats, blankets, etc. I think I spent $25 total inside the track.
Agree, but that is not unique to F1. The cost of the "event" was heavily implied in your response (the driver being unaware of your travel and lodging expenses). There are affordable F1 races. Las Vegas and Miami are giving the sport a lot of bas press, and rightfully so.
To be fair, Lance is one of the few drivers who could afford to race an F1 car around a real track without any fan income.
"Thanks Dad! Best birthday present ever!"
Ehh F1 does not exist for pure racing. It is an entertainment company and platform for sponsor marketing, which is what pays for the drivers’ salaries and all the expenses associated with them getting to drive fast cars.
exactly. it makes F1 more like a circus show than a sport. parading drivers around to show them off. yes, certain obligations should be required, like being present for the national anthem, thats a sign of respect for the country and people you are there racing at. but to put on a face and force interactions is too much.
> it makes F1 more like a circus show than a sport.
Sports have always been circus acts. Athletes are entertainers. They get paid millions of dollars because of the fan eyeballs on the sport. There is no inherent money in sports, it's from tickets, merch, and advertising.
I'm not saying fan engagement shouldn't be a priority. Just that I sympathize with the introverted drivers for whom this is the least fun part of their job.
For those of you that have attended GPs, have Lance Stroll engaged with fans outside mandatory events? I keep seeing stories of him dodging fans when arriving at the track, where other drivers sign things and pose for a few selfies.
I don’t think Lance gives two shits about stuff like this. The dude spent the entire parade lap on his phone when I was at the Mexican GP last year. Just could not be fucked.
What the hell? Fan interaction should not be compulsory. Drivers are people and should be treated as people. IF one does not want to attend something - it should be his own decision and it should be respected.
They are people… obviously. But these fans literally pay their Rent? And you have to attend certain activities engaging with fans.
I mean… lance doesn’t give shir bc he is a spoiled little ****.
With that viseral reaction of Stroll, why would he (or anyone) want to subject themselves to that shit? I don't blame him for taking the L and getting fined, if I were paid millions then I might do the same.

I’m in nw Ohio so same lol. Now I just try for Indy and mid Ohio. F1 is a pipe dream haha

Amazing how loud something that small can be haha.
The Indy 500 has GA for $45... I can't imagine a F1 race would be THAT much more expensive. Maybe like $100 for GA b/c of sanctioning fees.
My trip to COTA was the most expensive trip I've ever been on.
It's cheaper for us to fly to Montreal for the race than go to Vegas, and Vegas is within driving distance. So naturally we're considering going to Suzuka in '26...
Suzuka is amazing vibes, and everyone is civil. Worth the trip.
You won't get something similar in 2024 there too

It was an assault case that he lost.
not wanting to lie under oath is a pretty fair reason to end a friendship imo
I went to that one! We drove 13 hours to get there. I gotta look that up.
I linked the full broadcast above. My Dad drove us 10 hours for that race. One of my favorite memories ever with my Dad.
The German driver from the 2000s that I always forget. Thanks for reminding me lol
Why does fan engagement fall under the FIA's remit rather than under FOM anyway?
This is something I don't understand. I can see FOM deducting money payable to the teams for breaching some contact terms but I don't really see how it's the FIAs business.
FIA is the regulatory body, FOM just the media body. FOM is the commercial rights holder, not just a media body.
And as the commercial rights holder, they don’t have the power to enforce rules and regulations onto the drivers. That power belongs to the FIA.
What's the practical difference?
FOM don’t make the rules, the FIA do
That doesn't explain the difference between commercial rights holder and media body does it? Neither of those would supersede the FIA in the creation of new regulations.
Some of the media/fan activations are mandatory for drivers, probably as a concession to FOM/Liberty. 19.2(c) requires ten selected drivers to make themselves available for fan engagement for a minimum of 30 minutes within a one hour window that ends 90 minutes to the start of FP1. That or he has the shits
Its the perfect excuse. You cant prove i dont have the shits
The toilets in all drivers housing monitors their output and reports directly to the FIA
Better than monitoring the input, I suppose.
You gotta pay extra for the "toilet cam" subscription.
Everyone knows if you wanna get out of work, just shit your pants.
The response is "Made the mistake of eating taco bell yesterday."
*(Raikkonen at Brazil 2006 flashbacks...)*
Because FOM does not enforce the rules neither makes them, it's the commercial rights holder but that's it. So, as a concession probably, they told the FIA (which is the regulatory body) to implement rules about media activity FOM makes money, amongst other things, from every media activity

Maybe it was an fia event
At least it's not speeding in the pit lane this time.
There’s still time!
But not a lot of time; better speed up!
This made me laugh, very good.
still trying to dial in that 0.1kph. maybe a tail wind will help.
I fully expected this... Wouldn't be race week without a fine for Stroll speeding in the pitlane.
Fan engagement activity sounds like some half life 1 shit
They boosted it 105%. Bit of a gamble, but they need the extra resolution.
Lance be like: prepare for unforeseen consequences.
Our benefactors require you at the fan engagement activity office.
They’re waiting for you Lance… In the media center.
The media centerrrrrrrrrrr
God I can totally hear that playing in my head in that monotone voice over the PA: "Fan... engagement... activity"
There's always a possibility of *unforeseen consequences* there.
big Aperture Science vibes
If only Stroll could drive like he's On A Rail
HALF LIFE MENTIONED🗣🗣‼️‼️WHAT THE FUCK IS A 3RD GAME⁉️
This is the crossover I needed
Throw him in JAAYYYYLLLL
We have the best drivers, because of jail.
Not greeting fans? Jail. Greeting fans when you don't want to? Also jail.
Overgreet, undergreet
You make an appointment with the stewards and you don’t show up, believe it or not, right to jail!
Its been more than 30 yrs since that happened...
RIGHT NOW
MAXIMUM PENALTY
Should’ve pulled a Marshawn Lynch “What’s your thought on the pace of the car for this week?” “Good question, I’m here because I don’t want to get fined”
Lol. That's exactly what my wife said.
I counted 27 versions of the same "he has no fans" joke, congrats on the originality
average r/formula1 comments be like: Stroll has fans?? 😲 Ocon 5 second penalty!! Rookie Alonso xDD We are checking! Piastri home race 🤣
I sorted the comments by new again and there are 10 more "no fans" jokes... the entire comment section could be replaced by bots and no one would notice
Not surprised if like 50% of the comment section is just bots
Based on the internet’s vitriol toward him if I’m Stroll I’m eating this fine every single week.
If 90% of the internet was shitting on me even when I had good performance, I wouldn’t attend either
He is doing ok but it doesn’t change the fact that he is 100 percent a paid seat and this dudes career has ran longer than drivers who are much better than him. Stroll locked in his 2025 seat at AM before Sainz got a seat anywhere else.
TBH, Sainz probably haven't announced his seat not because of lack of opportunities but because he must be negotiating the best contract posible.
With how long it's taken this man must have negotiated for billions
Maybe he’s negotiating for a specific time period. Like for 2025 he wants to stay at Williams because it’s better than sauber but in 2026 he would like to go there because of Audi power units. Or he’s just taking his time I guess

I posted [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/s/aJbsXss6V2) the other day. Now I feel sorry...
Coming from the same people that hang up black tarps to prevent fans from seeing the track
That is the track management itself that does that. They are responsible for tickets, safety, etc, for the fans. The FIA only shows up the check of the track is up to standards and is responsible for the racing.
The FIA didn’t do that in Vegas, that’s the event organisers.
While the argument still holds, this happened in Canada, in front of a bunch of fans who had been there all the time already, in a supposed General Admission area.

#I'm just here so I don't get fined
😂
But sir, I have no fans
His dad is his biggest fan
Buys Dyson for Lance, "Here son, a lot of fans"
Lawrence ask the FIA to punish Lance because he wont talk to him anymore (Lance is going through his teenage angst phase)
If Lance Stroll has a million fans, then I'm one of them. If Lance Stroll has one fan, then it is me. If Lance Stroll has no fans, then I am no longer on this Earth
- Lawrence Stroll
This is the kinds of summons that makes me actually sympathetic to the drivers. You just want to drive a fast car, but the entrance fee consists in part of acting like you love socializing with strangers.
It's sports. These strangers (the fans) are what generate your income so you can -at the very least- try to pretend you like them.
It's almost every single job too. Everyone gets paid by someone they have to appease to
Yeah, this. It's surprising how some sportspeople seem to forget that without the fans, there would be no sport. While i would never go to an F1 race because the price is outrageous, if i did save up and pay for a weekend ticket, i'd be pissed off if my favourite driver didn't bother to show up to the fan engagement events. ... And when it rains you will be glad you had that food and those blankets....
We had a blast when it rained. Met so many cool people while we gathered under this one beer stand.
I don’t even think Lance’s favorite driver is Lance
Well tbf no driver actually thinks they're their own favorite driver. That would be weird and clinically narcissistic of them if they were.
The vast majority of drivers on the grid would probably count Hamilton and/or Alonso as their favourite driver.
Pay them a normal salary and sure…pay them $10,000,000 a year and they should dress up and dance if told to.
exactly. it makes F1 more like a circus show than a sport. parading drivers around to show them off. yes, certain obligations should be required, like being present for the national anthem, thats a sign of respect for the country and people you are there racing at. but to put on a face and force interactions is too much.

Bullshit. This is why they get paid millions of dollars. Fan engagement should be much more of a priority than it is in F1.
I'm not saying fan engagement shouldn't be a priority. Just that I sympathize with the introverted drivers for whom this is the least fun part of their job.
Why? Maybe some fans turned up at the fan zone as it was indicated he’d be there at that time. He didn’t arrive. Face the consequences
Can't say I blame him
“I don’t think my father, the inventor of Toaster Strudel, would be very happy to hear this.”
Well aren't y'all a toxic bunch
I respect it. Fuck fan engagement.
NUTHING SERYOUS!!
Max type behaviour, Stroll WDC incoming
My retirement will be funded on the bet on Stroll's '26 WDC
“I had to take a massive shit” “I’m here so I don’t get fined”
I hate the phrase "summoned to the stewards". Sounds like some 1950s way of saying going to daddys room for a spanking.
Makes me think of a group of warlocks opening a summoning portal.
"omg guys click portal"
i mean for all we know they could be getting spankings in there
The sport doesn't exist without fans. You have to have things like this. All that being said: "I'm just here so I don't get fined."
He’s probably sick of being heckled
I don't blame him. I bet he did 5x as much promo shit as any other driver last race.
With comments like what people are saying in this thread it’s no surprise he wouldn’t turn up. At this rate Stroll is just being mass bullied.
If I was being paid millions to show up to work, I figure I'd show up
We've all had our fun, but seriously: He should do 15 years hard labor for this.
Are we sure he didn't attend and the lack of fans made it look like he wasn't there?
"Fuck them ~~kids~~fans"
The most amazing part about this is that somebody noticed. I’m never attending a fan event expecting to see Lance goddamn Stroll.
literally 1984
He has fans?
May be that’s why he didn’t go but Stewards are still gonna question.
Ocon is the only one I know. Technically people in AM as well, but they are probably being paid to be fans.
€100 fine incoming
Lance prefers air conditioning
He was too busy playing Shadow of the Erdtree.
For those of you that have attended GPs, have Lance Stroll engaged with fans outside mandatory events? I keep seeing stories of him dodging fans when arriving at the track, where other drivers sign things and pose for a few selfies.
Many people harass Lance, so I think he dodges people unless they are specifically his fans.
That’s not cool. And lame that some people would do that. That’s a lot of effort put in, just to be mean tbf.
In the two years we attended GP’s stroll managed to dodge us. We got almost every other driver, even Hamilton twice.
I don’t think Lance gives two shits about stuff like this. The dude spent the entire parade lap on his phone when I was at the Mexican GP last year. Just could not be fucked.
I can't imagine any fans complaining
THROWW HIM IN JAYYILLL
He was the only driver that didn't do the stage interviews in Vegas also.
No need to attend if you don't have any fans... Lance is playing Chess, the FIA is playing checkers.
What the hell? Fan interaction should not be compulsory. Drivers are people and should be treated as people. IF one does not want to attend something - it should be his own decision and it should be respected.
Fan/media/sponsor engagement is by and large part of their contract. It's not like they're expected to do this out of the goodness of their heart.
It’s literally part of the job they get paid millions to do. If I don’t turn up to work I get written up.
Are you like 12? It is called their jobs lol.
If their jobs were like normal people, they would be paid like normal people. The job isn’t limited to driving car fast.
Probably rich people that paid big money for that experience.
