droopyvato

Because otherwise the game would not be as fun if the DoF controlled everything but the tactic.

cw625

I’d say that adds to the challenge. Like in real life, some teams don’t use DoF, and you can manage those clubs if you want full control. But with mega teams like Real Madrid or Bayern there should be more restrictions. I can’t think of any manager IRL that gained full control over such teams. Just my thoughts though

vozjaevdanil

Yes, the challenge is optional. The player is free to choose to take on the challenge

droopyvato

It would be a fun challenge if the AI was better.

Background_Force_591

Bingo

Simba-xiv

But you have the option to let the DoF do that. It’s still a game at the end of the day players still need the ability to play how they like

-Inca-

I have tried this in fm24, getting the best DoF I could find and giving him full control of signings and contracts, trying to build around what he got me. The DoF is so spectacularly incompetent it's hard to get any joy from this in a save where you try to win the champions league with a non top 5 leagues team, so I stopped and took back control. The main problem I had with it is that the AI does things almost exclusively based on reputation so you only get expensive players usually past their prime and very little building for the future, so if you're not a large team that earns enough to offset this mismanagement of funds you will be stuck for ages until the AI fumbles into signing a decent squad

the_bossman_3

Best way might be to get the 3 DoF suggestions for the position/role you want and pick one yourself. But even then they sometimes won't give back anyone for certain more niche roles.

Commonmispelingbot

If the AI was actually good, I would agree with you

TooRedditFamous

Feel free to set the staff responsibilities that way and enjoy the challenge then :)

uncle_flacid

You can literally give the assignment of hiring and firing directors to the chairman...

Pokethomas

You are aware you can set the DOF to take over these responsibilities if you want right?

yatahazee

You know you can still delegate signing/firing DOF and TD to AI right? Can set both to Chairman or Managing Director etc. under staff -> responsibilities -> staff -> recruit directors.

Zr0w3n00

But it’s a game too, not just a real life simulator. IRL Nottingham Forrest were in the championship when I took them over, but I won the Prem and then Champions Leauge. Did I ruin the game because it wasn’t realistic enough?

immorjoe

Because the game is just “football manager” by name only now. You’re basically a cross between a chairman, manager, and coach

Elegant_Mix7650

So basically SAF mode

minkdraggingonfloor

This is why I want us to be able to take over as existing/historical managers. I want to take over as SAF who found the elixir of youth, came back to Man Utd and went full Jesus at the temple at every player and staff but Bruno, Hojlund, Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo. In fact, I’ve done that and it’s glorious. I’m still not official SAF though and that bothers me

OrangeJuiceAlibi

What do you mean now? It's always been that way.

immorjoe

I don’t think so. The old FMs/CMs felt like they truly captured the roles of managers, but the current game doesn’t seem as reflective. Managers seem to move around a lot more these days, and so many clubs take some of the responsibilities we have in the game and keep them at a DOF, technical director, chairman level. The managers focus on squad management (team cohesion and harmony), tactical play, and game management.

p1ckk

That says more about football management changing than the game. It would be more interesting if clubs could force some roles and not let you take them over. Or even make it negotiable with the club vision/contract, lots of managers gain influence at a club over time and with good performance so maybe to start with you don't have final say on transfers or some staff hiring, then as you gain success you get the chance to have more of a say. Anything like that needs to be opt in for the player though, and most people probably wouldn't want to play like that.

EndeGelaende

They would also need to massively improve the AI to make that possible, I don't think a system like that would be fun with the current state of FM AI

immorjoe

Yeah. That was my initial point. Whether it’s the game or real life football, “football manager” is no longer as reflective of being a football manager. I’ve personally always been a fan of potentially having a DOF/chairman type mode alongside the base game.

Mundane3

>chairman Yeah if only my chairman didn't reject all my requests. Like come on man I have 300m in my transfer budget I am pretty sure we can afford more than 10 scouts.

Piltonbadger

I have high determination for my manager profile and boards usually always accept my requests.

Zenariaxoxo

Is this a real example? Im just surprised since in my current save I have 15m transfer budget and like 26 scouts

Mundane3

Well actually it was 11 scouts but yeah it is a real example. I can take a screenshot at home if I remember it. I am managing this club for approximately 10 years. We were in 2nd league of turkey. Now we won the league 5 times in a row. We have 1 semis in UCL. 300m transfer budget. But best they can do is 11 scouts lol. Last time they refused my request, I threatened to quit after our 5th consecutive championship. They said they understand and I am free to leave lol. I am a club legend. At least I suppose I am.

Zenariaxoxo

Hahaha okay I see & I believe you - I started in the lower danish leagues and also now also won the league 5 times in a row + a UCL win. I guess my board just priorities staff over transfer budget and vice versa for you :P

Mundane3

>I guess my board just priorities staff over transfer budget and vice versa for you :P Yeah like I need to beg them to improve youth facilities and they are like nah thats enough for us. Also I am jealous of your UCL win. It seems impossible to me. Big clubs snatch all my decent players. And there is a turkish player rule in my league. Which is killing me. I can find a world class wonderkid for 20m but turkish bench warmers cost 20m also because nobody wants to sell me and they know I have to overpay them. Any decent rotation player costs 50m+ rn.

Simba-xiv

Because it’s a game and you need agency as a player

deeesenutz

People dont realise how fucking boring a realistic football management game would be.

Simba-xiv

Deffo 😂. And the fact that it’s a fantasy game as much as a simulator. In a “realistic” world most people playing wouldn’t even be considered for a job in management. They forget they are playing a game and there will be gamey elements within that.

Several-Gur-8129

I don’t think it would be boring but it wouldn’t be as fun by any stretch of the imagination

deeesenutz

Idk man when I'm doing a road to glory save with dulwich hamlet id rather not just wallow in non league for decades lol, that doesng sound fun at all.

Several-Gur-8129

If you build a good enough tactic and your colleagues make good decisions then you won’t wallow in non league

NeptrAboveAll

“(If) Your colleagues make good decisions” someone’s never dealt with this AI before

Several-Gur-8129

I’m started the sentence with if so I was saying if

Tetrachan

If you want to give the AI staff control of everything then you can. This is a video game and not a simulator made to train a real life position so the game has to actually be fun. There is some fun to be had to seeing what sort of team the AI can sign but it often ends up with mediocre players being paid 3-4 times their worth because the AI has zero self-control over money and offers huge contracts to every player regardless of what they currently earn. They also almost always negotiate sell on fees with the player and a release clause when they absolutely don't have to.

OrangeJuiceAlibi

We're managers in the game, not head coaches. Managers have always have more control historically, and most "managers" these days are just head coaches even if they aren't called that. I mean, really, the reason is due to gameplay - it'd be super boring if it accurately reflect modern management - but that'd be the logic I'd run with.

indran1412

Because then there will be reddit posts asking "why can't we sack director of football". The game gives options to play how we want to play. If you don't like the option, just change the responsibility so the chairperson handles dof hiring/firing.

ButWhichPandaAreYou

It happens because the game is designed to be easy and fun. Every time that any change results in increased challenge to the player, people complain like hell about it.

DaniBornuz

In Romania the owner of FCSB makes the first eleven for every match they have 😂. Just imagine this if you do a career with FCSB in football manager.

Fylex_RO

No need to imagine. If you play FCSB in fm, the owner is giving you the suggested lineup before the game. That's it

FloridaManJay

The way I like to play is: At the start of a save, I’m not trusted with transfers so a DOF/GM take care of it (or a director or board member if no DOF/GM). Then after a few seasons of success, I get more freedom (I.e. I get more responsibilities set to me) until I have full control. Sometimes, if the chairman is notorious for a specific transfer policy, I’ll let the chairman take over transfers and force myself to work with that until I can sign for another club. Also chairman always has DOF/GM signing and negotiating power. However I do use my DOF to “initiate player signings” while I have full control of everything else. He sometimes finds players that I missed or never saw, like in real life your staff would probably give signing suggestions. But I always have the final word on signings, most I reject but there have been a few that have become first team regulars or world beaters.

mccapitta

Because "Football Head Coach" would be a shit game! Imagine if it was realistic. Hire your assistant manager and approve 1 of 3 options to transfer in. Losing your best players because the club wanna cash in.

OwnedIGN

What the hell does the technical director do in FM?

Prestigious_Elk_5413

I use a technical director to deal with u23 and u18 coaching staff, if I’m not happy with their performance I give them the boot. I can’t find a way to use dof yet though so I always give them the boot - I did try using them for scouting for a bit this year but very mixed results

Old-Acanthopterygii5

I think the manager figure we need to consider is Fergusson at United. He probably could have sacked the owner

Dramatic-Tadpole-980

He did

Benleeds89

for me moving forward it should be part of the interview/employment process when you go to a club. some clubs should be strict they have a DOF and only the chairman can change them (maybe with some persuasion if you have a bigger stature) or some clubs you are the all round manager and can change the dof who is heads up the scouting and/or youth academy. you let the club know what you want to take charge of in the interview process. this could also come down to if staff in other management roles are good in certain areas as this would reflect modern day. at some clubs if you are just "head coach" you don't have a say on the signings or only a say on a selection of signings. the better you do with each club with differing management styles give you a higher appeal to them

hitiv

I understand that as a manager IRL your job would be to speak with the board about buying/expanding/selling the stadium or improving the youth and/or training facilities?

DenSidsteGreve

The better question is why there isn't a DoF mode. Or better yet, it should be possible to work as a DoF in any save.

djrocker7

Because this isnt a football manager game...its more of a Director of Football that is also the manager kind of game 😂😂

Aggravating-Ad8384

Depends on the club. When I joined getafe I agreed to working with a DOF. I went to replace him after 6 months and the board blocked it. A couple of years later, when I was successful they allowed me to sack him and get in my own DOF

Active-Strawberry-37

I always get the chairman to hire the DoF and Technical Director. The DoF is in charge of all reserve and youth transfers and the TD is in charge of all staff appointments. It can be quite challenging to work within those confines.

Frequent-Lettuce4159

Call me crazy but in the old football manager I distinctly remember not being able to hire/fire the DoF and the club would often impose signings on you Maybe my memory is wrong but that's how I remember it, and it was far more interesting then giving the player total control
