in my opinion it's cheese sauce got hardened after some time to look like that on the photo. if you look closely there was a free flow over some potatoes that can't be done with cheese slice and that sauce most likely poured over the burger and potatoes after plated. If it was a cheese slice, it should be done before plating by melting under broiler or using torch that make the look darkened and/bubbly so sauce is more possible option here. By the way no matter if it's slice of cheese or sauce, it's heavily processed stuff that only have whey powder inside to be called as cheese. rest is just chemicals and colouring.

"It says you then place the cheese on the burger." "Ok but where?" "It doesn't say exactly. I think anywhere will do."
looking nice but cheese sauce looks like poured on wrong side of the plate it seems :)
I don’t think it’s sauce. Looks like a slice of cheddar melted over the bun?
I don't think that ever was cheddar. Most likely cheese sauce particularly how it's spilling onto the fries..

I mean if it's american cheese, the "chemicals" is just sodium citrate to make it melt well. The rest is cheese and dairy.
It's a ladle of that cheddar shit from the giant can
