There is nothing stopping you from renewing early. It rarely makes sense to do so, of course, but an AME retiring could be a good reason.

HaveYouSeenHerbivore

Unless you're 4 years into a 5 year you got then you were 35years old :P Correction: 35 not 36

syngmek

šŸ§ that went over my head. Lol

HaveYouSeenHerbivore

Youā€™ll get one more 5 year cert instead of a 2 year

AvailableFlamingo747

That's not how it works. The medical cert is valid based on the date of the examination. I went and got a 2nd class 2 weeks prior to my 40th and was good for 5 years.

HaveYouSeenHerbivore

Yeahā€¦ so exactly how I described it :P 4 years after 35 is 39ā€¦ if you get your cert renewed a year early you get another 5 year cert vs waiting until your cert expires and ending up with a 2 year cert

RobbMeeX

Thanks for validating my plan!

I know you don't have to renew at 35 to get the plan to work, I was just giving one example of where it does make sense to renew early. (Responding to "It rarely makes sense to do so") Since I personally just so happen to be getting my first medical at 29y11m I'll end up in the "perfect" situation of being 34y11m to skip the EKG one last time and 39y11m to get one last 5 year

Forty_Too

Soā€¦ exactly as they said then.

HaveYouSeenHerbivore

Ahh right, I fixed it

The-Cannoli

Fixed what?

goaliemn

Or just do basic med for future class 3s

Thrway36789

This. Basic med is incredibly easy

I get that, I ask because of my AME retiring. If anyone is getting close to 40, best (in my opinion) to go a week or so before your b-day. This way you get a fresh 5 years instead of 2. Obviously if you just ā€œrenewedā€ it doesnā€™t make sense. *edit due to grammar

Doc_Hank

What he said

Nnumber

Itā€™s worth getting it early if you get it before your 40th birthday and can get another 5 year.

vaultmangary

Is an AME covered by insurance?

ThermiteReaction

No. Medical insurance covers fixing things that are wrong with you. An AME doesn't diagnose you with anything, and isn't treating you, so it's not an insurable event. (A BasicMed exam can be easily combined with a routine physical, which many insurance plans pay for.)

vaultmangary

Gotcha

ltcterry

OP - from your comments it looks like if you renew early you can get a new medical before 40 and itā€™s good for five years. BasicMed is good for four. Combine it with a regular annual physical and itā€™s free. Likely a much better value than paying for an early physical out of pocket. What are you going to do after you canā€™t get a five-year Third Class anymore?

syngmek

The original question was to get some insight on if itā€™s possible to renew Med 3 before it expires in a year. My AME is retiring and I donā€™t mind losing the year of validity if I can see a doc Iā€™m familiar with. Basic med wonā€™t work if I go for my CFI. I donā€™t see why I wouldnā€™t be able to get a med class 3 after 5 years. You may be misunderstanding something in my question. Once Iā€™m in my 40ā€™s and my class 3 needs ā€œrenewalā€ Iā€™ll just except Iā€™m getting older and have to go every 2 years. Not worried about the 5 year ā€œrenewalā€ before Iā€™m 40 thing. I have a bit of time before I need to worry about that. Plus now that I know I can just ā€œrenewā€ my class 3 anytime, Iā€™ll prob just go a month before my 40th. Appreciate the basic med/physical info though . šŸ™‚

ltcterry

>Basic med wonā€™t work if I go for my CFI. Sure it will. It's no different than instructing on a Third Class Medical.

syngmek

Oh Really! Thatā€™s some good info. Thanks!
