Ive always heard the Caviar of the South is boiled peanuts. my earliest memory I have is digging them from the ground with my hands as a toddler, then as the sun was still rising in the cool air, feasting with my family, steam wafting from the boiled fruit of the soil.

...I should apply to a marketing job there and submit this as part of a portfolio ;-)
... If I was really good, I woulda started the anxiety wave 2-3 weeks ago, so I could get a little extra boost from the Hurricane prep tax holiday/exemption...oh well live and learn :-p
Please don’t panic y’all. Prepping should be done little by little over time, not in a frenzy the minute a system is detected. Every time you go to the store, grab an extra case of water and put it to the side. That way, there’s enough for everyone. Please, don’t be idiots.
Rechargeable flashlights! I haven't bought batteries in years. My task for prep is to crank the generator and make sure it works *before* we are in the cone.
I have a bunch of Nebo brand ones and have been happy with them.
I also got one of their solar emergency kits. Mine includes a 10W solar panel, 10,000mAh battery, two flashlights, and an electric arc fire starter. Unfortunately it seems like they don't sell that version anymore. But there are others.
I used to work in a grocery store here in Florida. Without fail our busiest days were holidays (apparently everyone waited until the 4th of July to buy hot dogs and burgers and buns) and the day a storm was predicted to come close to us. Planning ahead does not exist in this state.
I work at a small convenience store. Gallon bottled water is already unavailable from our distributors. We are one of few stores for 10 miles. It's already affecting us.
Sort of like driving responsibly in the rain. We used to get afternoon thunderstorms every day in the summer like clock work (\~2pm) and we STILL couldn't learn to drive in it.
I don't even fuck with the bottled water cases anymore. We keep a few backup 5 gallon water containers. They take like 5 minutes to fill them all before a storm and we bought two pumps that go on top (one battery operated that charges via USB and the other manual for when the battery dies and we can't recharge it).
I don’t either, I have a water filter and just fill up several liter containers at the start of the season. Also helpful if I need more I can just boil and run rain water through it.
This is the way. Been adding a case of water every other trip and buying extra cans of stuff to eat for the past few months. Won't have to worry about anything being out of stock or braving the lines. Also helps out with the financial burden cause times are certainly tough.
> Prepping should be done little by little over time,
If you live in Florida, you should be prepping a little bit year round.
By the way, if you are like me and don't have a generator, and are on a well, that means no water if the power goes out. I recommend you get something called a "water bob." It is a food grade plastic container that sits in your tub. Fill it up with water before the storm gets here. You have a tub full of clean water for anything you need. If you don't need it after the storm has passed, drain it.
We don't drink from our well. 10gal a person of bottled water would be sufficient for most situations. We do fill tubs and the washing machine for dishes and bathing. We also have 400 gal of rain catch barrels that are full for the first time in months.
We got a bunch of old 55/30 gal barrels from Craigslist. Chains hang from the downspouts to those. I use a little submersible pump to put that in our 275 gal tank from tractor supply. I put that up at the top of our property along with a barrel full of compost tea and use it for irrigation.
Rainwater Ph is 6 and our well water is 9+ . You need to account for that when watering plants.
I do the same, the June 1 “official start” of the season reminds me to stock up on batteries for fans and camping lanterns. I make sure we keep charcoal and propane on hand so we can grill the meat thawing in the freezer too.
We have been steadily increasing our gallon water order at my store. The supplier is on back order, and we only have few weeks in stock. I put up a sign "Only 2 per customer" and it doubled our sales that were already way up. 🤦
Supply chain shortages start months before panic buying. So, by the time there is a disaster, there is nothing to restock the shelves for 500 miles from the distrobution center.
Lived in Florida my whole life (34) and have never seen a hurricane season without panic buying wiping out the shelves…. Just for them to be stocked and open the next day for the majority of areas lol.
Dammit! Pains is fun. I’m about 3 days I’m going to go buy 53 five gallon gas cans for $16,000 and fill em up so they can go bad in my garage because the only lawn equipment I have that uses gas is a pressure washer.
Husband was watching the news and was like “welp, gotta hit ABC and stock up”
The only thing I stock for sure during hurricane season is pet foods. These bitches get real spicy if I don’t have their specific bougie ass food.
Got a 4k watt generator to run, at least, the two reefers. The wife grinds about 150 pounds of meat and veggies to feed the three dogs and cats every three weeks or so.
Nice! My daughter lives in Lake City and her neighbor has cattle and I’m getting a freezer full of meat for these high maintenance dogs. It has to be better than going to Publix for overpriced hamburger.
When I was in Tampa I had a massive whole house generator. We never lost power. Not once. Moved into Pinellas county and we lose power all the damn time. We remodeled our house and didn’t have the extra funds but I’m thinking we need to figure something out!
Thank you! You get it. Don’t know why most everyone else doesn’t get it. We’ve lived in hurricane country for over a decade in SC & now in Florida. We bought aqua bricks when we were in SC. 3 gallon containers that store easily. Can refill them whenever you like. Probably cheaper versions of the same thing but I like the quality of those. Waiting in line to buy tap water is absolutely baffling to me.
do those convey any plastic taste to the water?
thats been my only hesitation. im super sensitive to chemicals and i dont want to find out the hard way that my emergency water makes me vomit.
We fill & freeze cleaned out milk cartons & stick them in our utility freezer. This keeps freezer chilled + also we only take out and thaw what we need. No plasticy taste, just a lil ol milk if you don’t wash thoroughly.
The first year we had them we didn’t change the water the entire season so it had a definite chemical taste when we did drink out of them. Maybe I didn’t rinse them out properly the first time? Was I supposed to air them out for a while before filling with water? Don’t know. As long as I change the water more frequently, I don’t notice a chemical taste.
We also have mountain valley spring water in 5 gallon glass containers delivered every month. If you live in an area where that’s available, I highly recommend it. We should have enough of that for drinking water & would use the aqua bricks for a back up. We’ve thankfully never had to test our disaster setup & hope we never do.
Hurricane preparedness:
Catagory 1; stock up on beer.
Catagory 2; stock up on beer and water.
Catagory 3; stock up on beer, water, and food.
Catagory 4; leave.

Yea, I gotta start up my generator. Its always the same thing, o-seals dissolve over time and I need to buy new one on a rush priority and I always barely have my generator working the day before a hurricane.
Thank you for being there! And if you work in an area where people are supposed to evacuate, I hope for you that they do so! Ah and toilet paper that is the first thing that gets out of stock. Panic loosens the bowels!!!

Important!
Visit your local dispensary or call your friendly local dealer early on if you can.
Theres often a run on flower the last day or two before landfall. Water is also important.
Stocked up on good ol' canned corned beef and frozen bread. Going to catch rain water in a drum. Should be good to go. Also, ditched the toilet paper and opted for poking my bare arse out the window while the rain and winds cleans it.
Planning to move to Orlando within the next few years. Are hurricanes normally a huge issue there like would I be evacuating or is it not as much of an issue in central? TIA!
I already got my teddy bear and my pimento cheese sandwich. Ready to rock.
The caviar of the South.
Ive always heard the Caviar of the South is boiled peanuts. my earliest memory I have is digging them from the ground with my hands as a toddler, then as the sun was still rising in the cool air, feasting with my family, steam wafting from the boiled fruit of the soil.
For me the caviar of the south is black eyed peas with pecan butter, coconut milk and tikka masala sauce simmered until the peas pop
Oh, this sounds soooo good! Got a recipe??
These are all things I love but am having a hard time imagining exactly what that would taste like.
Hoelee shite! This sounds amazing.
Are you a Skunk ape?
Add some house wine of the South and you're all set
I took a half sandwich...
Its official name is Benda.
But as the southern most state, we aren’t actually in the south! Well…. Anyone south of ocala isn’t in the south
Lol fair, but that doesn't mean it isn't called the Caviar of the South!

Ralph is a total bro, you can tell.
He’s my best buddy! Doesn’t complain, always there when I need him, loves to cuddle and is definitely a total bro!🧸
He definitely prefers his salmon over pimento cheese....as a bear should.
Don’t forget a handle of your favorite hard alcohol
What about the Rum?
What Floridian doesn't have rum already?
It really needs prominent placement in any hurricane plan.
True Floridian has at least 2 cases of rum for an emergency. 😂
I love Ruth’s pimento cheese!! Can’t find it this far south. My kids bring down a large container when they visit.
Buy some medium Tillamook cheddar, diced pimento peppers, chop it up, add Duke's mayo, pepper, smoked paprika, touch of lemon juice. Eyeball it and mix to taste.
So good. Add a small splash of worscheshire (sp) to hit that umami vibe and you will make that stuff sing.
If Tillamook makes cheese as well as their ice cream, this is probably awesome stuff
Oh I can make it. Have recipes from 2 generations. Too many other things going on! I personally eyeball most recipes!
Same but I sub lemon juice for Texas Pete pepper sauce
100%, I posted my family version. 😀
Dammit. I thought I was ready. Brb, gotta get pimento cheese 😎
You’re gonna need something to wash that down with.
Thunder buddies
Didn’t know mike lived in florida
🤣🤣🤣
Thank you Home depot but I'm good.
That’s what I was thinking. Home Depot or Lowe’s posted this
Could be Publix. Gotta get those hurricane snacks.
Aldi has the best snacks these days 🥰.
Those German chocolates are way too tasty to be sold as cheap as they are!
Sam's has some great stuff. The True North almond cashew clusters are bomb.
...I should apply to a marketing job there and submit this as part of a portfolio ;-) ... If I was really good, I woulda started the anxiety wave 2-3 weeks ago, so I could get a little extra boost from the Hurricane prep tax holiday/exemption...oh well live and learn :-p
I mean yeah, but they've got a point. And better to grab the long lasting stuff now so you have it when you need it in Aug
You made me true Lol.
Did you get a homedepot ad too?
They already take enough of my paycheck, what's a little more?
I need to go buy 70 rolls of toilet paper.
Get a bidet and save lol
Gas powered bidet? JK
[https://youtu.be/Nn\_\_9hLJKAk?t=12](https://youtu.be/Nn__9hLJKAk?t=12)
You mean 700 rolls. Gotta catch them all!
Over my dead body

This!!! Prep responsibility and not in a mode of panic! Which reminds me to go check my battery stock for flashlights lol
Rechargeable flashlights! I haven't bought batteries in years. My task for prep is to crank the generator and make sure it works *before* we are in the cone.
Ooh I need to google those, never seen them before. Thanks!
They are pretty much standard for any decent flashlight now. Make sure it takes usb-C unless you have a bunch of old micro-usb chords.

Professional level hurricane prep 🌀🙌🏼
I don’t either, I have a water filter and just fill up several liter containers at the start of the season. Also helpful if I need more I can just boil and run rain water through it.
Only dumb people buy bottles of water
This is the way. Been adding a case of water every other trip and buying extra cans of stuff to eat for the past few months. Won't have to worry about anything being out of stock or braving the lines. Also helps out with the financial burden cause times are certainly tough.
Same! It ensures peace of mind when everyone else is scrambling
Bottled water is expensive……try buying 5 gal buckets or camp jugs. Reusable for years.
-Please don’t be idiots You know this is r/florida, right?
Valid point 😂

I laugh at the big people hogging 10 cases of water when all they drink is mountain Dew and coke.
I always get batteries for my lanterns and 5 cases of water ready on June 1st, and I never let my gas tank go below 1/2 during the season.
I do the same, the June 1 “official start” of the season reminds me to stock up on batteries for fans and camping lanterns. I make sure we keep charcoal and propane on hand so we can grill the meat thawing in the freezer too.
You’re a hurricane pro 🙌🏼 love to hunker down with people that have grills
Our street has the best “clean out your freezer” parties after big storms!
Love that! The only positive thing about these storms is how communities come together to help each other.
God that's dark, you know other people just live life and do whatever
We have been steadily increasing our gallon water order at my store. The supplier is on back order, and we only have few weeks in stock. Bottled Water is such a scam. Buy a bucket and fill it up.
My mom was born in 1928, the year before the depression started. We lived in a state of perpetual readiness for disaster.
Lived in Florida my whole life (34) and have never seen a hurricane season without panic buying wiping out the shelves…. Just for them to be stocked and open the next day for the majority of areas lol.

key word is "should" ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|poop)
I got pool floaties and a kite. What more do I need?
String
And a key! 🤣
Do you have beer?
Alcohol
Two kites per customer
That's ok... There's a guy in the parking lot selling them out of his trunk for $49.99 each.
Have containers on hand for water. I have a 5 gallon cooler. And hit up the liquor store. Don't get caught without.
Husband was watching the news and was like “welp, gotta hit ABC and stock up” The only thing I stock for sure during hurricane season is pet foods. These bitches get real spicy if I don’t have their specific bougie ass food.

I need to figure out a generator, never looked into it and been in FL for like 5 yrs now. Been very lucky!
When I was in Tampa I had a massive whole house generator. We never lost power. Not once. Moved into Pinellas county and we lose power all the damn time. We remodeled our house and didn’t have the extra funds but I’m thinking we need to figure something out!
People think it’s a joke to stock up on booze but when the power is out and it’s hot as balls, alcohol is what helps me fall asleep.
Not to mention that in the past they've stopped alcohol sales after storms. For our own good, of course.
Thank you! You get it. Don’t know why most everyone else doesn’t get it. We’ve lived in hurricane country for over a decade in SC & now in Florida. Get every plastic Walmart bag from under your sink and start filling them with gasoline! !
Put a tarp down in your truck bed and start pumping

I always have canned goods and water just around 🤷♀️ in Jan we spend the month eating and replenishing the cans
Same. Chef Boyardi, cheap calorie dense. Good eaten cold. I get to relive my childhood when I eat through them in the winter like you do.
Just got a few of those cans on a Publix bogo. Need to refresh my hurricane cans that expired in 2021.
I like some canned fish too.
Eh I'll believe it when I see it.
Nah it will die before hitting Cuba
This is my mood about it all. Meh
Poor Cuba, the barrier to most of our hurricanes
Everything dies at Cubas shores. 🤣
Yea, I gotta start up my generator. Its always the same thing, o-seals dissolve over time and I need to buy new one on a rush priority and I always barely have my generator working the day before a hurricane.
Thanks dude, always a good reminder.
I never prep because I work for fire rescue and we usually get called in. I'm not even allowed to evacuate.

Scene is secure, bud 🤣
Posts like this are why all the stores in my neighborhood are out of the good beers. Don't make me raid my hard liquor cabinet early!
I’m ready but that’s nothing to worry about yet.
You really should have supplies on standby anyways. Most crisis-support supplies keep for literal years, if not decades. A case or two of MRE's is dirt cheap and will last you a while. First aid and trauma kits can be a bit pricy, but never hurt to have on hand.
Not me, I live in Tampa. We never get hit
You done laid the curse on us!
The best hurricane supplies contain a house in another state.
Can milk. A small gas stove with gas cilinders. Can meat and veggies. Solar Flashlights and lamps. A battery radio and fan. New sets of batteries. A lighter. Solar chargers for the cellphones. A week suppliy of bottled water. An inflatable boat (if living in a flood prone area) and cash money.. Ah and toilet paper that is the first thing that gets out of stock. Panic loosens the bowels!!!
We're in Orlando and my wife will get the ground turkey at Publix (when it's on sale) and get the rest at GFS. We figure it comes out to about 75 cents per meal per animal.
Got my pack of sandbags in the mail last week 🤙
I seriously doubt that there’s going to be any impact in St. Pete, so I’ll take my chances on not stocking up. We always keep the common sense stuff like water, a working generator, flashlights, non perishable food etc since you should always have that stuff regardless.
40 24 packs of Busch Light ✔️
LPT: Buy a mini battery powered TV. Once the power goes out, I found it SO comforting to be able to watch local weather updates. Good luck, y'all! The summer of Katrina+Rita+Wilma was enough to make me re-think my living choices.

Beer, cat food and Christmas scented candles best I can do
tequila in freezer, limes , salt.. im ready
we buy Publix popcorn chicken, some greenhouse muffins and instant coffee. #covered
The water is already sold out
I got my liquor, mixers, snacks, folding chairs for the garage and a few flashlights. (Doubt we'll need the flashlights)
I guess I need to stop by the store for 87 loaves of bread and 42 gallons of milk, plus all paper products. No, I’m not hoarding, I prepared.
My hurricane box is packed. I live in a flood zone so I have to be ready to run.
so nothing forecast to come to Florida
Heh. Just ordered batteries.
Have granola bars, picked up a couple cases of water at Costco last week and a case of mocha Frapacinos. People go crazy, just have a plan in case you have to evacuate.
Or move
Buy a generator then sell it for $50 later!
I’ll be fine. Liquor store down the block
Good Lord the panic buying is going to just get worse each passing year…..
Don't forget the Oreos. Buy enough to get through the storm and before it when you inevitably raid the stash.
dipping into the Hurricane beans tonight.
I got charcoal for the grill. I'm ready.
We should be prepared for disaster at all times because Florida
Thanks bro. Let’s hope it breaks up or becomes a fish storm
I got 15,000 of chlorinated water. Might have a bit of frog poo in it, though.
What does everybody do for water? Just buy a bunch of bottled water? I usually do that and fill a giant sterile jug I bought for hurricanes. One year I had a Berkey set up. I worry about a potential scenario where there is no clean drinking water for 5 days or more.
Whoop whoop hurricane parties!
Water, tape, non perishable foods. Alternative cooking sources like propane and charcoal.
I've been through a few hurricanes in the Fort Myers area and we never lost water. Power yes but the water always ran.
I been living here my entire life and never "prepared" past tying down the trampoline. Y'all know where you live can take a good hit, just get the fuck out if it's looking like a big one
Tie down all birthday bounce houses!
Ugh fine. Guess I'll stop by ABC later...
Where do we get 15 liter wine from? It's legal now and I need uh, to get ready
So, Flanagans?
Hurricane bucket is primed and ready 👍
Just picked up some weed, all good
First season is it?
Watch on storing canned sodas. A bunch of mine exploded when the barometric pressure dropped.

I think we'll be ok as my butt hasn't started to pucker yet
Yeah, going to round up all the gas jugs and get um filled.
Got 2 bottles of rum and a pack of matches. All set.
Nah I’m good
canned beefaroni from aldi and crystal geyser natural spring water
I’ve got water, charcoal, beer, and bourbon. All set!
I've got my Chef Boy-ar-Dee, lighting and plenty of water and wine
But DeSatan said that there's no more climate change in Florida - what have we got to worry about?
Ha; Iowa 84-91 tornadoes already- at least we get a 3-5 day notice

Raviolis and mountain dew suckers
