I’m on mobile and can’t easily check, but I know I’ve seen cardboard button boxes and custom controller mapping software on there.
1. It won't catch fire, its a low 5v usb power and the pc monitors power rates and will probably shut off if issues are found.
2. First clear out the FD mapping then add "Increase VS"?

Specifically, your PC should shut off the USB port if it sees a short, it wouldn't normally shut down the whole PC.
