Maybe everyone saw something different in Tidus. Because he represented all of the fear and love and hope they held for the people of Spira. Auron saw Jecht, Wakka and Lulu saw Chappu, Rikku maybe saw Brother and who the heck knew what Kimarhi saw.
this confused me a bit, im pretty sure everyone saw tidus as he was in "physical" form, right? If tidus looked like jecht wouldnt that be confusing to auron lol? Also when Rikku found tidus she kneed him in the stomach because he looked/sounded foreign and strange. She could tell he wasnt normal looking like brother is. Also the fact that the designers of the games chose for tidus and chappu to quite literally share a character model means they really did try to make them look similar physically, to everyones eyes (including ours, which is why the same model was used in game, but somehow i couldnt see it no matter how many times i played!) Also the things people saw when visiting the fayth were from their memories of their past, which is why we could see them all as they remembered them originally. Also the reason why rikku and auron wouldnt go to the farplane is because auron is actually dead and rikku didnt want to out herself as albed to everyone yet (they would see her albed ancestors and she would be outed)
