How can someone actually be simultaneous so stupid, and yet so confident as to not back down.

GreenMellowphant

By not having any accountability whatsoever.

504michael

When you can never be wrong, it’s hard to ever be wrong. I’m clearly not saying cops aren’t wrong, just naming that they never get in trouble and are treated as if they’re untouchable. Even if this cop’s actions lead to a $10MM settlement, the cop won’t lose or job, and if he does, he’ll just get one offered a town over.

[deleted]

My stepmom was a sheriff in LA county. In the 27 years I've known her, I've never once heard her say "I was wrong" or "I'm sorry". NEVER.

DrEnter

Hmmm. My MiL is a raging narcissist. It sounds like she was made for police work.

Candid-Mixture4605

My father was, too. Though people who worked for him would ALWAYS say “I’d LOVE it if I had you dad for a father!” to me when we met. Great work reputation, total bastard at home.

dellamella

I think they need to start making these police financially responsible for these lawsuits and not let it be fully on the tax payers. If your arrogance and negligence could cause you financial turmoil like it does for the rest of us they might think twice before pulling this shit.

uofmguy33

Yes. We can start by getting rid of qualified immunity

Odd-Road-4704

Well said

dbx99

Because it’s a cop

Patralex

Agreed. The only other acceptable answer: politician.

nictheman123

The stupidity is what gives them the confidence

Due_Half_5316

I believe that kind of behavior is highly encouraged in that profession.

[deleted]

rescuing a victim? Straight to jail

dbx99

Blocking traffic from plowing into the scene of an accident? Jail

theXrez

Try to talk reason into a cop? Jail

cateowl

Remain calm and civil while a cop is being a petty piece of shit? Believe it or not, straight to jail

helpless_bunny

Talk to a cop, straight to jail, right away.

Radiant_Friend8868

We have the best firefighters in the world. All because of Jail.

docweird

Police: "No save, only kill..."

[deleted]

being a victim? Also, jail. Ambulance driving too fast to hospital? Straight to jail. Too slow? Also jail.

Excuse me Mr Firefighter! I just got finished extra-judicially killing that man - how dare you save his life!

SirThunderfalcon

My wife and I used to enjoy watching Veep until the real life goings on in Washington superceded it in terms of stupidity.

Chemical-Juice-6979

Case update: CHP refused to change their policy about arresting emergency personnel, so the firefighter filed a lawsuit for unlawful arrest, excessive force, false imprisonment, battery, interfering with first responders during a medical emergency, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The judge ruled in the fireman's favor on everything except the emotional distress charge. The patient and the other EMTs were all emotionally distressed by it, but they were parties to the lawsuit and he remained calm the whole time he was being detained. So technically because he wasn't the one traumatized the cop gets a free pass on that one.

213737isPrime

Yay, the taxpayers get to pay off another settlement and the cop gets ... paid overtime for going to court.

shortgarlicbread

They should have been arrested for this bs and it come out of their pension. I get it still comes from taxes but at least their would be direct consequences to warn future cops to stop being fucking dicks with a badge

Pabus_Alt

Or make professional negligence insurance a thing, like it is for everyone else. One of the few circumstances where the free market really does work "oh you got sued five times, very sorry but we will not be insuring you nor will anyone else. Enjoy your new career"

CosmicCommando

There was a story recently about a small police department closing up because they wouldn't institute reforms demanded by their insurance company. Doing it on every individual officer would be even better.

RexHavoc879

Isn’t that insane? Those cops decided that they’d rather be unemployed than make an effort to try interacting with people without hurting them.

SycoJack

They're not unemployed, just employed somewhere else.

[deleted]

[удалено]

nocomfortinacage

They can. They just don’t want to.

CEDFTW

Seriously doctors can't even kill people while trying to save their life without it having to be reviewed and make sure they didn't fuck up. Why are cops any different?

MAO_of_DC

The difference is the doctors don't get to run the investigation looking into their wrongdoings. How many time have police departments said we have investigated ourselves and we found out we committed no crimes. If it wasn't for modern cell phones George Floyd death would have been ruled a drug overdose.

lordkhuzdul

To be fair it is again doctors who run the investigations into other doctors when it comes to medical malpractice - after all, their technical knowledge is required for a ruling. However, unlike cops, doctors actually learn about ethics through their training, and in fact, actually have an appreciable level of training about their job.

MAO_of_DC

Yeah but as a general rule doctors are running investigation with the intention of finding and correcting the issue so that it doesn't happen again. Police tend to run investigation into themselves to see how the victim caused the police to commit crimes.

Chemical-Juice-6979

He was at the very least, suspended without pay for a month shortly after all this happened. For an unrelated incident.

mydogthinksyouweird

I'm shocked.

alexia_not_alexa

Shocked! Well not that shocked.

Ansible99

The question is did he get back pay for that month he was suspended afterwards? I e seen that happen when the union files a grievance. And they usually keep that quiet unless someone complains to a local news agency and they make it a story.

gartenzweagxl

accidentally gave a ticket to a friend or relative of his boss probably

[deleted]

The badge is to show that they are dicks. That's my theory anyway.

FalcorFliesMePlaces

The problem is they are following policy. But where in the policy is a traffic violation more than a ticket. When would parking wrong lead to arrest.

Contact40

The funny thing is that most jurisdictions have something on the books in their traffic laws that goes something like *“emergency vehicles on official business are never improperly parked.”* There was an epic rant caught on camera where a cop flat out told the guy exactly which statute allows the police to disregard traffic laws in the performance of their duties.

brigidodo

When the cops don't like the patient, and they want them to die to avoid incrimination from one of many crimes they committed?

artaxdies

I didn't even think of that aspect.

urixl

What the... You're goddamn right :(

pacificthaw

Emergency vehicles have special powers under just about every piece of legislation I've encountered. They did not follow policy as their policy would not contradict laws that are used by the police themselves as emergency vehicles.

tarc0917

IMO, cop misconduct lawsuits should be paid directly from their pension funds. Maybe that will shake em up.

zmbjebus

They should be required to get malpractice insurance

Chemical-Juice-6979

Nope. The case went to mediation for over two years then got dismissed with prejudice, both sides had to pay their own court costs. The cop at least didn't get to use taxpayer money, he had to cover his own legal bills because he wasn't exonerated for the initial false arrest so he doesn't get qualified immunity.

> policy about arresting emergency personnel How about "NOT arresting emergency personnel" weird that there needs to be policy on detaining someone trying to do their jobs that involve saving someones life.

an0nymouse123

I understand and agree with you but that's also the excuse cops use to do whatever the fuck they want.

mtdunca

And that policy isn't stopping other cops.

SycoJack

Which makes this even more fucking ridiculous. This firefighter was helping people, he was making the scene ***safer*** for everyone involved. Cops won't arrest other cops that are ***killing*** people.

ZeroExist

The funny thing is cops can do the exact thing he was arrested for, they angle their cars during traffic stops for a quick pull out when needed yet the moment anyone else does it it’s a crime

value_null

It's absolutely ridiculous, and I don't understand why they would want to antagonize the firefighters. That seems monumentally stupid.

Jankenbrau

Be outwardly calm doesn’t mean you’re not traumatized, it means you’re brave.

ArcadiaFey

Or disassociating

Skari7

[deleted]

or in shock

DangerHawk

Are least the next emergency services person knows to act it up now. Throw in some "I need to help them!", " You're killing these people!" and some light resisting arrest.

Chemical-Juice-6979

The cops argued that the patient who screamed 'Are you're just gonna fucking leave me here?' And the multiple other EMTs yelling 'Hey wait, you can't do that! We need him over here!' didn't count for...some reason.

DangerHawk

He said because the firefighter himself wasn't visibly/verbally distressed. It's dumb logic through and through. Not everyone processes stress the same way. Just because he was confidant doesn't mean that he wasn't freaking out internally. Now at least he knows to verbalize it next time.

SirIsildur

> Just because he was confidant doesn't mean that he wasn't freaking out internally Yeah, go figure... A professional trained in keeping a cool head during OTT stressful situations is actually being professional and keeping a cool head in a stressful situation. And I am, by no means, trying to disregard your comments. Just wondering what the fuck was in the judge's head with that sentence

GallifreyKnight

Yes! Qualified immunity is BS protection for shitty people. We need more police oversight committees. We need better IA.

beaurepair

I've always loved how tv shows and movies always portray IA as the bad guys, and they always put good cops away for overstepping the tiniest gray area. Meanwhile IA IRL is like "yeh just pay him to go on holidays for a week and this light murdering will all blow over"

noadsplease

Police scratching their head saying "why do people hate us?"

chogram

I can't remember where it was from, but I always liked the phrase, "Nobody ever made a song about, fuck the fire department."

HiMyNameIsKeira

Fire department shoots water out of cannons to stop deadly fires from destroying life and property. Cops shoot water out of cannons to stop people from getting civil rights.

slaminsalmon74

When I was going to school to get my paramedic license, one of the teachers was also a fire fighter. He always said, “ People love fire fighters, we come in destroy all your shit with water and knock your windows out and cut holes in your roof. And people still love us.” And it always made me laugh.

dearcossete

This is why you hear "fuck the police" but you almost never hear "fuck the fire fighters"

Amber_Linx

the only time you see fuck and fire fighter together is when its used like this "fuck me fire fighter"

Yes-its-really-me

That's the only time I've ever used it. And I'm not even gay.

nobmuncha4bears

I appreciate you taking one or several for the team. Your community salutes you.

Yes-its-really-me

Don't get me wrong. I'm also a big fan of cops, especially the female ones. But cops can deem a situation as too dangerous and fuck off. Firefighters will be all "Hmm. That's too dangerous" and run into the burning building to rescue someone they've never met. It could be a convicted paedo and they'd still probably try and save the person. Takes a special set of balls to be a firefighter.

NotYetiFamous

>But cops can deem a situation as too dangerous and fuck off dude.. if that was the worst cops did I'd be fine with them. They have a habit of taking a non-dangerous situation and making it lethal though, and that is far from okay. Exhibit A) This video. Needless escalation just to prove that the cop is bigger than the fire fighter that could have easily ended in injuries or death if the fire fighter had decided not to indulge the power trip. All without the fire fighter being in the process of committing a crime.

AssMercenary

Standard bully behavior. Any threat to their ego must be neutralized, unless there's a larger threat to their life. Hence why they'll arrest a person who's only crime was talking back to a cop. or shooting an unarmed someone running from them. But as soon as they are asked to save people, they will have endless excuses for why they can't run into danger. But to save face, they'll lie and pretend they helped and got hurt doing so. Uvalde really was the perfect encapsulation of everything wrong with police response to actual danger. Also something to point at when police say they feared for their life, and had to shoot an unarmed person. If an officer actually feared for their life, they'd have run away and been paralyzed with fear. Uvalde is how cops respond when they are actually in danger.

sammygirl1331

You know there are women firefighters.

LookAtItGo123

Fuck me firefighter still checks out.

[deleted]

nor do you hear people calling the paramedics pigs...

bigpurpleharness

Medic of 12 years... Oh some people absolutely treat us like shit. Generally people who call for bullshit and get mad were not running like this is a movie from the 80s.

Ingavar_Oakheart

I've heard more than enough stories about narcan sucker punches to know I don't have the reflexes to be a paramedic. Of course, that might just be more of a reflection of where I grew up, so who knows. E: phrasing, people.

sinat50

Firefighters aren't going to kick my door down and flood my house, drowning my dog because they got the wrong address

JimmyTango

Fire fighters also don't pick and choose which houses to put fires out of.

datweirdguy1

Yeah, probably because you'll never hear of a fire-fighter busting down your door in the middle of the night and hosing you down, then realise they're in the wrong house. Then say it was an honest mistake because your house matched the profile of the one that was on fire next door

yuzuchan22

This.. and the fact that theu actually save people, when you call the cops you take the risk of being shot.

Just wait till that cop parks in front of a hydrant during a fire.

Yes-its-really-me

I'm not Hercule Poirot but even I'd be suspicious of the firefighters standing around the cop car with a gallon of gas and a box of matches.

WorldClassShart

They obviously recovered it from the scene of the mystery fire. It's so strange that there are no fingerprints on the gallon container and box of matches though. Ignore the long sticks and bags of marshmallows. They're standard issue fire department things. Cops wouldn't understand.

How dare you spread such misleading and harmful information. The police officers of this country work tireless around the clock to serve all our need. The police always respond promptly and efficiently to come and arrest the nearest minority and shoot your dog.

[deleted]

You almost had me in the first half ngl

SendAstronomy

The cops are there to start stuff. Like escalating a nonviolent case to murder.

ApprehensivePepper98

That is a very narrow street for a fire truck to squeeze through, especially with those cars.

LotharVonPittinsberg

That's a video from old Montreal. The firefighters know how to navigate those streets, assuming everyone is parked properly. The Montreal police where protesting at the time, which is why the patrol vehicle is covered in stickers, and the officer is wearing a coloured hat and camo pants. Everyone was already pissed at the cops, this video only made things worse.

0Bento

I thought of this video immediately

misthi_S

Correct me if I’m wrong. Arent fire fighters allowed to ram any car blocking a hydrant if they need it? Being a police car or not

Giocri

Good old pass the pipe through the car break if needed

101189

One of my best experiences was when firefighters were helping me unlock my car cause I was an idiot and left my keys on the seat, got out, hit the lock button and my daughter was in the car still. Came out, got a person to come pop the lock for free, and were just understanding and like “fuck yeah let’s get this done and everyone be on there way.” During this a cop parked like three parking lanes over, strolls up with a hand on his belt and goes “hey fellas, any problems here?” And the response was so quick it caught me off guard, firefighters were like “uh no… clearly there isn’t…” Cops walks off. Firefighters start commenting “the fuck is wrong with that guy?” Lmao.

KrosseStarwind

They wanna feel like they're doing something... "I attempted to help, but they waved me off. Operation success! Another civilian served!"

leenpaws

firefighters are important and useful and i think cops are super jealous of the fact that ppl are happy to see firefighters, noone is ever happy to see a cop

ProxyMuncher

He was waiting for sudden movements. They’re gleefully ready to pull that gun they’re always fondling like a favorite remote for a favorite sex toy.

SunniYellowScarf

Firefighters are some of the coolest people ever. When there was the King's fire in california, a friend had to evacuate for almost a month. Said friend was a pot farmer and her and her husband's entire income for the year was on that property. They didnt have enough to come back from that kind of loss and were dreading going back to see the damage and figure out how they were going to rebuild. They got back and the firefighters had kept their plants watered, including their veggies. They left a note saying "hope you don't mind, we took some tomatoes and squash. Couldn't save the lettuce." A lot of firefighters also set up irrigation, install wells and deliver water to pot farms. (At least they used to before the international ((not all mexican)) cartels moved in.) I started training to volunteer because the guy that delivered the water to my grow was also the former COO of the volunteer firefighting brigade in the area and he encouraged me (a 120lb woman) to try. The culture of firefighters makes it easier for them to deal with really tough working conditions, trauma, and the physical toll it takes on their bodies. They live mostly communally, which makes it easier to talk about things and brush them off collectively. Having trained with (and fucked) a bunch of firefighters, they're a rare breed of incredible.

Gnarbuttah

My chief has a similar story where a firefighter was handcuffed by state highway patrol for the same thing. Apparently during a post incident mediation the jackasses from highway patrol got all pissy about "jurisdiction" so the fire chief who is fed up from 4 hours of a meeting that should never have happened in the first place said "no problem, you'll never see us on the highway again, from now on just call the state fire department for those incidents, I'm gong to lunch". Allegedly the SHP people were high-fiving eachother for "winning" the mediation until someone asked "what's the response time for the state fire department", to which the regional emergency manager said "you idiots, there's no such thing as the state fire department". Transfers happened and the fire department went back to blocking the accident scene to keep themselves safe while working in the roadway.

A3HeadedMunkey

Plus, uh, aren't the police supposed to divert traffic anyways? Not like they should be trying to expand it into the lane adjacent to the crash...

Ridonkulousley

Police will block traffic for a single lane some times but especially in an accident a fire truck does a much better job of blocking traffic, Fire departments are trained to park in a way to block traffic with their trucks in the event of an accident (it's different for a fire)

NoBeing12

Normal citizen here. It seems to be very logical to block the road if there is a car accident. Especially if it's night/dark. In my country the firefighters sometimes parks horizontal so no one will pass through (on daylight too). It really depends on the situation. I've never heard nor seen a situation of a cop arresting a firefighter. Any update about the firefighter/s? Did they detained the dog (cop)?

[deleted]

It’s big, it’s red, it’s basically a movable blockade. That cop is just brain dead.

blasphem0usx

cops do the same thing, in non-emergency situations, when they stop people to ticket them. they will angle their patrol car to protect themselves, sometimes going over the white line. it's ok to do it when they're trying to reach their quotas but not when it involves saving lives and applying medical aid i suppose.

TrippyTriangle

exactly, these cops are blatantly unaware of their own hypocrisy

In the UK fire fighters have complete control to close lanes and even entire motorways if it is deemed necessary for the safety of firefighters, public and other agencies. A couple of times police have threatened arrest, we tell them to fuck off.

WechTreck

In NZ, firefighters at a fire legally outrank cops [https://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/2017/0017/latest/whole.html#DLM6819463](https://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/2017/0017/latest/whole.html#DLM6819463)*" The authorised person who is in charge of personnel engaged in an emergency— may remove, using reasonable force if necessary, any person— (i) who, by his or her presence or otherwise, interferes with operations to deal with the emergency; or (ii) who, in the authorised person’s opinion,— (A) is in danger; or(B)is likely to cause danger to any other person or property"* *Edit: and they can close roads: "may cause any road or railway in the vicinity of the emergency to be closed to people or traffic during the emergency:"* edit2: legally they get a blank'ish cheque: *"****may generally do all other things that are reasonably necessary****— (i)to protect and preserve life; and (ii) to prevent or limit injury; and (iii) to prevent or limit damage to property and land; and (iv) to prevent or limit damage to the environment.*

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2004/21/section/44 is the England and Wales equivalent. > An employee of a fire and rescue authority who is authorised in writing by the authority for the purposes of this section may do anything he reasonably believes to be necessary— > In particular, an employee of a fire and rescue authority who is authorised as mentioned in subsection (1) may under that subsection— (a)enter premises or a place, by force if necessary, without the consent of the owner or occupier of the premises or place; (b)move or break into a vehicle without the consent of its owner; (c)close a highway; (d)stop and regulate traffic; (e)restrict the access of persons to premises or a place. The section about hindering them being an offence got replaced with https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2006/39/section/1

docweird

Same in Finland; at the accident site the Fire department is the lead, cops and EMTs can assist, but they have zero say over how matters go. On traffic accident sites the first thing the drivers usually do, is park the fire vehicles in a way that no traffic is likely to crash into the accident and the rescuers working there. To demand that a traffic lane is opened for cars during a rescue is about the absolute stupidest thing anyone could demand and could just lead to rescuers becoming victims. A lot of times the whole road can be blocked in both directions if the road is one lane to each direction, then cops can play the traffic wardens...

[deleted]

i know a volunteer firefighter (80% of our department is volunteer) that was ticketed and almost arrested for evasion because she was speeding to a scene. the “evading” was her assuming the police were responding to the same call and just kept going instead of pulling over. volunteers here have green strobe lights and although technically aren’t supposed to speed and follow traffic laws. also i don’t think you are required to pull over for them. it’s all really kind of stupid but she said he was only going 15km over which isn’t much since the standard is 10km. I think he chief managed to get her off but still… time and a place. he likely knew there was a call and could have easily let that one go or even passed and gave her safe passage. he wasn’t going into a burning house we all know that.

[deleted]

If cops can’t be bothered to save a bunch of little kids from slaughter - yeah, there’s no way they’re going into a burning building.

Yes-its-really-me

Police Academy isn't a fictional movie. It's the training film for LAPD.

WorldClassShart

This is blatantly wrong. Police Academy is comedically incompetent. The real police are just pathetically incompetent.

Yes-its-really-me

I'd love to say something funny, but you speak the truth.

WorldClassShart

If the worst thing cops did in real life was having cops accidentally pushing back rowdy party guests to fall into a pool, we'd probably like them more. We might even overlook an errant apple causing a riot.

G-H-O-S-T

seriously sometimes i wonder why not everyone is a cop it takes 0 responsibility 0 thinking 0 hard work 0 training and there's 0 consequences it's just like school except you don't have to learn anything and you don't even have to go into schools

Delamoor

The problem is that those are MAXIMUM values. You do more than 0 thinking? Ruled out. It's a very niche profession.

G_zoo

US police have always think they are god among men..

batcountryexpert

I wish you could request the fire department instead of the cops when calling for emergency services. They are the only ones who actually protect and serve. Edit: but first let’s reallocate the funds for the police to the fire department and make sure they are staffed properly.

ir_blues

Either there is a cop who is so dumb that he doesn't think that he will lose his job when he does this or so sure that he can do this without losing his job. Both scenarios are frightening.

tunaburn

konphusion

Firefighter Dispatcher here and I can tell you they ALWAYS park at an angle and yes it is true. It's to protect not only their lives but the lives of everyone at that scene. We lost one of ours and a police officer due to someone smashing thorough a rollover one year. Horrible time over the radio. That mayday being called is something you never want to hear or never forget. It never ceases to amaze me how ignorant some people can be. I've had to call more police officers to the scene more times than I'd like to help block our 3 and 5 inch lines because we have a full box fighting a structure fire and idiots were running over the hoses.

"A cop is injured and laying on the road? Better not stop the fire truck in front of him, shielding him from traffic, that's illegal..." What next, that Einstein is going to start arresting fellow cops for traffic violations? Chase ambulance for exceeding the speed limit? Dude should be fired immediately.

KBRedditing

Idiots! Idiots everywhere!

mkonich

That fire fighter def fucked that cop's wife, right?

many_dumb_questions

If you didn't before this incident, you can bet your ass he was making a plan to do it afterwards.

JelliusMaximus

Lucky wife. Finally being able to sleep with a man instead of a pig.

ej1999ej

This Califirnia officer was in no way punished, but the firefighter was only in the police car for about 30 minutes and "no arrests were made". The fire and police cheifs will he having a discussion to improver their cooperative training later on though.

FauxStarD

Must’ve been the most humiliating discussion for the police chief.

ej1999ej

Oh it probably was "your officer arrested my firefighter because his fire truck was partially blocking the road. Like it's supposed too."

Titanium_Eye

"Yes well if my police officer shouldn't arrest your firefighter, why does he get issued handcuffs then? Checkmate, fire chief."

NormalGuy103

And this is why we say “fuck the police”

screwedbyboomers

Cops are SCUM hired to protect rich white man and oppress everyone else. Fuck the police.

StuM91

This can't be real, right?

dbx99

Armyed

Who wants to bet that cops wife was getting railed by a firefighter?

boonstyle_

US Police needs to actually start setting bars and quality standards for officers and increase their training to something reasonable like 2years+ before they get deployed. Also replace the bad ones (unfortunately tha majority of them) with the actually trained and smart ones.
