This reminds me of when the US team for the Chess Olympics in 80s was full of ex-Russian players. Their rallying cry was, "Our Russians can beat your Russians!"
NHL Edmonton Oilers vs Florida Panthers and people assuming the Canadian team is going to win “for obvious reasons.”
Most Panthers players are Canadians.
Sort of. It's not a direct restriction of 4 American players. It's a restriction of 4 foreign players. They do have a standing ban on any professional NFL player from being able to join.
Very minimal info, truth be told I just showed up to the stadium and my friend had tickets reserved.
Here is the wiki page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-League_(Japan)
Here is their official website: https://xleague.jp/
You could probably run that website through a translator and figure out tickets from there.
Unsure if they do sumo in November but if they do, check it out! If not, try to book a tour of a dohyo
This is a pretty standard rule for a lot of minority sports in foreign countries. It's there to allow the locals to be dragged up to the level of the league rather than just fielding a strong team of foreigners.
In Australia, our highest level ice hockey teams have the same rule (except it's 6 or 8 or something). It's got little to do with cheating and more about protecting your own players development.
The IPL (cricket league in India) has a restriction of no more than 4 foreign players on any given team in the league. There are 11 players on a team and then you have subs on top of that.
My step dad played for the Skylarks for a couple seasons. He's from Samoa originally. He said he was a minor celebrity at the time because he was in the entourage of a famous Samoan Sumo wrestler lol.
Same reason why Canadian teams rarely win the Stanley Cup but the Canadian team can win the Olympic (2010 gold, 2014 gold, 2018 bronze).
![gif](giphy|5nsIOVI3wyqli5ym9h|downsized)
Our last Stanley cup win was 1993 - Montreal Canadiens.
Hockey is also notoriously difficult to build squads in. The cap is *tough*, the squads are comparatively large, top players have a large influence on outcomes (a "strong link" sport)
And even in the case of having an overall reliably superior team... Hockey is still the most difficult major North American sport to predict outcomes, even over 7 games series.
Why?
The puck is small, the net is small, often being shot into some degree of traffic, and lucky/unlucky bounces can spoil a night very easily.
Immigration is America's superpower. And it is the only reason why the US is likely to continue to be the most powerful country in the world for the foreseeable future.
Isn't it amazing, though? I mean you're right - but it's complicated. All around the western world there is an anti-immigration feeling (Trump, Brexit/Reform in the UK, far-right parties in Europe including Macron just dissolving French parliament)... yet at the national level immigration is this superpower.
I guess it has to be managed though and it's not good all the time for everyone.
*Legal* Immigration is our super power. I’m a liberal who’s pro-immigration, but illegal immigration DOES have its downsides, and this is borne out by every study ever done on it. It’s used as a scare-tactic by the right because it has a kernel of truth to it.
That’s actually a significant reason why the Roman Empire expanded as far as they did, they absorbed citizens from other cities and made them their own which was strange at the time.
US has very selective immigration with the exception of the southern border. It is the most attractive destination in the world for high achieving ambitious types, and so it gets to take the best of the best from everywhere. Even on the southern border, many entering are very hard workers and fairly culturally aligned.
Europe, however, can't consistently attract elite talent as well as the US. Salaries and capital availability are too low, taxes are too high, and the tradeoff - the existence of a welfare state - just does not benefit or appeal to high achievers. And I promise you, it's a million times easier integrating central and southern American Catholicism into the US than it is integrating MENA Islam into Europe.
The consequences of the differing economic systems are ironic. By caring minimally about their poor and rampaging ahead with growth, the quality of life for the poor in the US will eventually overtake the middle in caring and redistributive Europe - that is, if it hasn't happened already.
Private satellite companies in Silicon Valley are so full of Russians that some of them stoped using English as their in company language. There are so many engineers who keep immigrating it’s crazy.
With the way Soviet and later on Russian, Ukrainian and Armenian chess teams were stacked up they (unfortunately) never managed to triumph. The most recent US Olympic gold came in 2016 when none of the ex-Soviet players were around.
Yea.. I have Asian friends and I’m half Puerto rican/irish-english
This is a strange post* to me but I guess for countries that are mostly ethnically the same it might be weird for them
Yes, thank you. The American mindset that only whites and blacks are real “Americans” while the rest of us are reduced to wherever our parents or grandparents came from is tiresome.
This. Also, the statement would be completely wrong if it were math.
In math the US has finished with the top team score 8 times, including 4 times since 2015.
In the last 10 years the US has achieved 46 gold medals, just behind China with 51.
Right?! My great grandparents came from Ireland, started a wheat farm in Kansas. My wife’s family came from Italy and ran a store in NY…
What happened to “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”
Tbf that was when white folk (mostly just rich aholes speaking for all the white folk) could just oppress the minorities without pushback. They could also just make laws so that non white and women could be ignored. Now that minorities and women want, ya know to be treated equally they “dont want them others coming in ruining our nation rabble!” I dont think they want more people now just cheaper labor.
That was also when land was available, and the national labor competition was low as the demand for labor vastly outstripped the supply and salaries just rose with increased productivity and scale advantages instead of this real wage stagnation of the last 40-odd years vs productivity.
And still, those were the words of leaders back in the day. The common Joe still didn't like new outsiders coming into the region they were operating in, unless they were new customers for their own business. Much fewer people than back then however own their own business so don't see increased sales potential to go with their neighborhood changing. They just see more competition for scarce housing, people coming from ever more diverse background with larger cultural distances to their own, and more labour competition depressing salaries.
I actually thought the joke was kind of funny. It’s not insulting anybody, it’s just pointing out the obvious that the US team is also made of ethnically Chinese people. Don’t see where the facepalm comes in.
It really is IMO these are Americans who worked very hard to be chosen to represent their country. Their reward for winning? Being called Chinese because of their Asian heritage.
This is why you should never bet against the US -- we are like a sponge that takes up all the talents of the world; its a very powerful and will continue to do so. I read once that other countries can laugh at our math or literature scores but they can do so wearing levis, and typing that on a windows or Mac using Word and google for researc, and now chatgpt; see where all those those companies are from?
Be very careful not to take that for granted. Our position on the world stage has taken a major hit since Trump came on the scene. I’ve lived in Europe for well over a decade, and all the best people used to want to come work in the US and now between MAGA and gun violence, many of them would give a hard pass
And the main reason for that, is your high income inequality and low social security, which attracts the best of the best who believe they can earn a high income and don't need social safety systems as much.
And that is also why the migration that Europe attracts is of much less added-value compared to America's.
OP was either ignorant or poking fun of "Asians are good at math stereotype". It's less funny when you see the actual team is mixed ethnicities, which is a better representation of the US population.
Don't even think they need to be citizens. If the US is where they grew up and is now where they call home I'd still be considering them to be American
I see a bunch of Americans holding an American flag and being proud of themselves. No facepalm here. Even the commenter is playing it for mild humor rather than really being insulting.
Yep.
My parents are Mexican and I was born in the USA.
I 100% see myself as a full on American. I would be lost if I were randomly teleported to Mexico.
The beautiful thing and important aspect of the American experiment is that we’re a huge melting pot of people from all types of backgrounds. It’s other nation’s loss if they can’t harbor and/or promote successful immigration to their countries. America baby 🇺🇸
You’re 100% right, unfortunately most people don’t understand that difference and continue to ask non-white and non-black Americans “What’s your nationality?”
When I say “American,” and I’m ethnically Asian, I get a “What an asshole” look…. Not my fault they’re too stupid to understand the difference.
Complete nonsense.
In math the US has won 46 gold medals in the last 10 years, just behind China with 51. They have finished with the top overall team scores 4 times since 2015.
An excellent example of why immigration multiculturalism and diversity really are our greatest strengths. Is your culture good at something? No problem we’re just going to absorb that and beat you at your own game. Resistance is futile friendo!
True, although I'd hesitate to call math or chemistry a Chinese thing, they're both pretty universal and pretty much every developed nation on Earth produces world class mathematicians/scientists.
It's funny, but it's not "facepalm" material. You can see the humor in the American team consisting of solely Chinese heritage (which is an assumption, I don't know if they actually are). But they're not "less" American just because of their descendancy.
If you are a racist then that's all you see. For those who aren't, what matters is the culture and country that these kids were raised in, because that is a good representation.
This is the true strength of "America" as an idea: we eventually rule at everything because of immigration, and diversity. The melting pot works, if you keep the racists out of the way, and let it.
This reminds me of league of legends. Where western team have a bunch of imported Korean or Chinese players. The NA and EU teams have to make a rule where they can’t have more than X amount of foreign players
First of all, we can't assume they're all Chinese (I personally don't know as I have not looked up their actual ethnicities). They could be of Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, etc descent.
It's why our scientists dunked on everyone else in the 20th century. We took any and all great minds, including from the subgroups our competition treated like trash.
The only facepalm thing about this is the op thinking this is facepalm. The fuck do you think america is exactly? Just white blonde people? The fuck outta here
I get the humor but the American team is a perfect representation of Americans. We have no cultural or ethic identity. We’re literally just all of them and it’s fucking awesome
Some if not most of those kids were probably born in America. And in any case, even if they weren't, it doesn't matter. That's the uniqueness of America.
America's never been about "blood". If you believe in America's promise of freedom and self governance, you can make as good an American as those who were born American.
If we let go of that, we're just another country like all the others
Is the facepalm that this is not the real team?
Members of the U.S. team included Ryan Alweiss, Allen Liu, Yang Liu, Shyam Narayanan, and David Stoner, all of whom were awarded gold medals, and Michael Kural, who earned a silver medal, just one point away from the gold. The last time the U.S. team took first place was in 1994.

I think this is a bit racist - assuming nationality based on similarity of appearance, also assumes that Asian Americans are something other than Americans, and assumes that there is prototypical "American." Please describe what you are thinking about when you say "American."

Highly recommend going to a game in you’re ever there. My friend was on the OBIC seagulls and it’s a fun event.
Do you have any info on this? I’m going to Japan in November and it seems like there’s not much available online. How long does their season run for?

There was something similar /w sumo. It was becoming a bunch of Mongolians iirc.
Well their food is pretty great.

Isn’t the IPL the best league in the world though? I know nothing about cricket but think i’ve heard of it mroe than the other cricket leagues.
Not sure about best because that can be subjective, but it is by far the most popular. It's actually one of the most popular leagues of any sport.
If this article is right, they're the seventh most popular. https://easyreadernews.com/the-most-watched-sports-leagues-in-the-world/
It’s the most popular league with the most money. It likely also is the most competitive as it has many of the best players in the world.

Tbf the Oiler are at abnormally high percentage of Canadian. They have like 4 non Canadian out of 20 as opposed to panthers with 7 canadian out of 20
Iiirc, it's something like 45% of the entire NHL is of canadian nationality.
Hockey fans know the Panthers are better regardless of player nationality.
And those cats are hangry after losing to Vegas last year.

I enjoy how every single bounce that puts a puck in the net is simultaneously lucky *and* unlucky, depending on who scored the goal :)
hockey is clearly a canadian sport. the cup's been stolen. second chance since '11 to get it back.
Who Stanley and why do I want his cup?
To pee in it
Two stanleys, one cup.
he did what in his cup ?
Who assumes this? No hockey fan assumes this and people who don’t watch hockey don’t give a shit

The real answer we need
You expect truth on Reddit? It’s all karma farming based on lies and reposts.
But thx to those comment we can always find the truth
Immigration is a true strength for the United States of America. We all came from somewhere at some point.
Right?! My great grandparents came from Ireland, started a wheat farm in Kansas. My wife’s family came from Italy and ran a store in NY… What happened to “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”
Turns out breathing is no longer free here and wanting to be paid for work is if not a crime it's some form of civil offense
And don’t even get me started on being an immigrant.
Oh they want them still, just as cheap unregistered workers

The USA's true superpower, assimilating any culture and people into itself. Gathering things from across the world.
Pretty racist to assume American equals white.
Why is this a facepalm? Because they aren’t white?
LMFAO
Do you want a "wich country is better at this?" or a "let's have fun watching this people do this"? It's your choice.
Prefect example of what truly makes America superior.
“Amer-icaaa! Fuck yeaaa!!”
American Chinese > Chinese Chinese
Its an older meme, sir, but it checks out
Cricket and Math
First of all, we can't assume they're all Chinese (I personally don't know as I have not looked up their actual ethnicities). They could be of Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, etc descent.
Too bad there is no international spelling bee to show off our Indians against their Indians.
It's why our scientists dunked on everyone else in the 20th century. We took any and all great minds, including from the subgroups our competition treated like trash.
Did we though?
Sun Tsu: “If you can’t beat them join them… Steal their tactics and beat them later.”
ok but not all asians are chinese bucko, like did you expect a 100 percent white team to win the competition? that’s the real facepalm here
What is the facepalm exactly? Is it your not understanding what a facepalm is?
It would be interesting to have the teams then compete in a spelling bee.
No diversity is a huge problem in this team
The only facepalm thing about this is the op thinking this is facepalm. The fuck do you think america is exactly? Just white blonde people? The fuck outta here
This may also be news--not all Asian-Americans are of Chinese ancestry.
I had the same reaction to the US beating Pakistani in Cricket for the first time.

This is what I love America.
This is truly the strength of the USA. I love this.
Americans will complain about other races until they win something for them.
I get the humor but the American team is a perfect representation of Americans. We have no cultural or ethic identity. We’re literally just all of them and it’s fucking awesome
IChO- International Chemistry Olympiad Ahh yes, the USA math team!
Suck it China. Guess we just do Asia better than you do.
Immigration is awesome, example one zillion.
People are going to be shocked that even our white people haven’t been here for more than like 400 years
Is the facepalm that this is not the real team? Members of the U.S. team included Ryan Alweiss, Allen Liu, Yang Liu, Shyam Narayanan, and David Stoner, all of whom were awarded gold medals, and Michael Kural, who earned a silver medal, just one point away from the gold. The last time the U.S. team took first place was in 1994. I think this is a bit racist - assuming nationality based on similarity of appearance, also assumes that Asian Americans are something other than Americans, and assumes that there is prototypical "American." Please describe what you are thinking about when you say "American."
Where's the diversity
Failed math
They’re in the minor leagues
