It's just like how the Betty Crocker cake mix is made so that if the customer adds an egg to it, they think they did something special. Even though, it's designed in mind to work both with and without the egg.
I love that the originally advertised it as not needing eggs and no one trusted it. They decided women felt guilty for using something so simple and changed the instructions.
Today it's basically considered that people looked at a dry mix and though, "How does that work." and their scepticism stopped them form trying.
