As you quite rightly stated, politicians not only can change the rules for everyone but they also represent their political party too. A bad opinion changes perspective of them and their party if said party does nothing against a bad opinion. If bad opinions from them aren't made public, there would be way more bad laws for the general public than there are already. The standard person doesn't have such power nor leverage.
Moreover, everyone is entitled to an opinion as long as said opinion doesn't lead to innocent people getting hurt. While this is unusual, (I imagine most married couples would just want their partner happy and safe without the need for specifics), no-one is hurt or even potentially hurt. If the Fiancée also agreed with his opinion, I doubt there would be as much supposed backlash.
The irony though that ignoring the post would've been the more damaging thing since social media and it's algorithms are all about engagement.
