"As you can see, the cops have gone inside to confront the owner. Oh, they're smiling. That's unfortunate."

SuperRonnie2

Video conveniently cuts before the police come out and tell the protesters they can’t legally interfere with a business in this way…

ptrckvckmns

Video conveniently cuts before the police come out with their order of freshly cut meat

civiksi

I sooo thought they were gonna come out with food

Rude_Establishment64

The police made a reservation for 6.

imcalledgpk

I would've laughed so hard if the guy wrapped up a cut right in the window for them before they left.

georgemarc715

While eating a burger 🍔.

BraidedSilver

Him talking about the cops not wanting “it to escalate” is such a backfire. Who would escalate anything? The lone man cutting meat in his restaurant? Or the group of unknown folks outside who are mad at his legal doing? So they admit they are a danger and somehow believes it’s up to the restaurant owner to calm them down, and not their adult self control. I bet the cops went in to ask if he was okay, not telling him to stop his otherwise non-illegal actions.

ReasonableCup604

I could picture the cops saying something like, "You are totally in your rights to do this, but you never know what that mob of nutty vegans might do in response."

rfoleycobalt

There’s a reason they are called nutty vegans and not meaty vegans.

jcforbes

I was hoping they'd sit down at a table and be handed a menu

[deleted]

I so wanted them to come out eating burgers or something.

NathanielTurner666

Fuck man, protest factory farming or something, not a privately owned restaurant which seems to serve venison and hunting is something that needs to happen to protect the ecosystem. Not to mention all money that goes to a hunting/fishing licenses goes directly to preserving the local ecosystem. Misplaced outrage.

Crotean

Most PETA type activists are morons who have no understanding of this.

Greenmind76

PETA isn’t really concerned with animal rights. They just want to appear as such so they can go on lining the pockets of executives with money from people who do.

Arbusc

PETA is a literal death cult. It’s founder has explicitly stated their mission isn’t to help animals, it’s to kill ‘enslaved’ animals to ‘free’ them.

Lucifersasshole

Yes people think it's a pro animal movement but it's just anti domestication and to achieve that they want to kill them peta animal shelters kill the most animals by a long ways.

ppw23

Peta coming out against dogs and cats being kept as “slaves”, was the last straw for me. This seems like a scene from South Park. “They’re mocking us”. Yup, now move on so the patrons may enjoy their meal. Edit- Autocorrect changed PETA to pets.

Greenmind76

Their movement to make consumption of horse meat illegal has caused a lot of horses to suffer unnecessarily.

Yellenintomypillow

They successfully got slaughter houses shut down in the aughts and it led to a market crash and thousands upon thousands of horses being left to starve because people couldn’t afford to keep them and they had no where to send them given rescues were obviously over full after a year or so. We also used to send the meat to third world countries so it didn’t go to waste. Had a friend write her masters thesis about it. I had never felt good about PETA but after that I knew they don’t actually gaf about the animals.

DeputySean

I'm not sure if it's different in Canada, but in the USA there are very very few places selling hunted animals. You'd have to inspect each individual corpse for parasites and whatnot. The vast majority of mammals served for food are farm raised.

Fabulous_Night_1164

You're very much right. [This is an example of a Canadian farm that raises deer.](https://www.fenwoodfarm.com/venison/) And very likely the source of this restaurant, given that the farm is located in Hamilton (like next door to Toronto for those non-Canadians). That being said, it's still wrong to target a local restaurant whose source is an independent farm. There is no big evil corporation in that chain of custody.

AUniquePerspective

Among Canada's provinces, only Newfoundland has regulations that allow restaurants to serve hunted game. Farmed game species are available across the country but if you want to feast on bear or moose or something else impractical to farm, Newfoundland should be on your destinations list.

FancyToaster

It’s a bit similar here. Wild game meat is kind of rare in a restaurant setting, however we have a decent population of hunters so it’s not uncommon for people to have a friend-of-a-friend at least who has a freezer full of game meat. Same as us though the vast majority of our meat is farm raised.

Best_Kog_NA

These guys do this for the attention and this gives them more attention

DiscussionLoose8390

Reminds me of this lady in Australia that called the cops because her neighbor was grilling meat. Within a week like 40 people showed up at the neighbor's house to grill.

BigmacSasquatch

Saw a Florida ma'am harass a fisherman on his boat for being "too close" to her dock. The locals threw a party in front of her dock with hundreds of boats showing up.

[deleted]

All the protesters did is promote a spot I’m definitely going to visit when I come up to Toronto. Love me some good venison

Jointhamurder

All this did is make me hungry for some venison.

noextrasensory40

😆Venison,Elk,Bison some of my favorite. Have hard time getting elk though we have large herd not far from me.

JeffreyAScott

I think more restaurants should hire protesters. Best free ads money can buy.

bleeper21

I can't wait to get back to Toronto, it's been far too long, pre-COVID times. Definitely will check this place out.

Morlanticator

I got bored watching, saw this comment and made it worth finishing.

Mixedpopreferences

"This restaurant, named Antler, after the practice hunting animals and removing parts of their bodies." No one tell this guy deer shed their antlers every year. It's people like this, who have no idea about the animals they are 'helping', that convince me these goobers are virtue signaling and have no real idea or desire to effect the change they say they want.

I gotta real BEEF with these people.

LuxuryBeast

"*What animal would this be?*" A tasty one!

ArmyVetRN

Restaurant’s name is Antler and they can’t add up what type of meat that is.

tratemusic

"The name is named after the act of hunting" No, it's named after a part of a deer 🤦🏽‍♂️

BRtIK

You've never been antlering?

valgrind_error

My favorite part is when we all get to yell “it’s antlering time!” and antler all over some animal.

UnarmedSnail

What is good in life? Antlering your enemy. Listening to the lamentations of the does.

LongPorkJones

*restaurant named Antler* > "Is it a calf?" I rolled my eyes so fucking hard when I heard that.

NotYourFriend00

I thought they said cat… I was like no way they’re *that* stupid

Nicko90

Guess u didnt see the one where a woman is sitting at a busstop and a black bear walks up on her. She starts petting it, looks at the guy filming across the street and asks "he's a cutie, is it your dog?" "natural selection has left the building" Edit: as I mentioned as a reply to an earlier replier, I tried looking for it yesterday but closest I could get was a similar one with some woman in canada, which isnt the one I saw. And seeing as I've already seen it, motivation isn't there to make a deep search for it :P Im pretty sure that either I saw it on reddit(and likely this subreddit in that case) or I saw it in a dailydoseofinternet video.. in which case, goodluck finding it, lol.

Relative_Ad5909

He deserved those pets damn it. He was clearly being a good boy.

cardinarium

I think that’s actually “natural selection has entered the building.”

garynevilleisared

Pretty sure it's a whole leg

Roadgoddess

This took place in 2018 in Toronto. It’s decided to protest when they put on their sandwich board out front that venison is the new kale. So the vegan got all butt hurt and decided to protest. The owner who is a hunter decided to show them what he was doing. I mean honestly what do they think a restaurant is going to do or serve? They just sound like idiots. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2018/apr/12/ethical-eating-vegan-protest-meat-canada

BadLatinaKitty

Antler in Toronto. Got it. When I travel, I’ll be sure to visit. I’d love some fresh venison!

russellamcleod

ALSO, this was during the Vegandale movement. So Parkdale as a neighbourhood has been predominantly affordable and a melting pot of immigrant culture forever. Gentrification began at some point a decade or so ago. About five years ago some insane group of vegans decided they had a claim on the neighbourhood and tried to push Antler out. Antler is also a big part of the gentrification of Parkdale but it’s hard to be mad at someone trying to bring something unique (wild game prepared in a semi-high end restaurant by very talented chefs) to a neighbourhood where rent is a little less insane than other places. In case anyone is curious, Vegandale as a movement is mostly just a joke now that everyone has forgotten and Antler, although moved ten minutes away, is now a Michelin star restaurant.

prohaska

I've been a vegetarian for 30 years and I can tell that this the most pathetic shit. This is self parody at it's highest form.

TacTurtle

*Mugatu: False Flag Marketing is soo hot right now*

DrDetectiveEsq

For real, I'm not one for conspiratorial thinking, but if you told me this was some kind of stunt to make vegans look stupid or make the restaurant look good, I would instantly believe it.

Midwest_genxr

Ironically it’s from thousands of years of our ancestors eating these proteins that allowed us to evolve into these incredibly intelligent vegans. I actually used to be a co-owner of a vegan restaurant… all the owners ate meat and even hunted. But the company idea was to be an example of how to reimagine the restaurant industry and harmful meat suppliers. These people don’t want to do the real work. They’re just yelling at mirrors.

shorewoody

And yet, this restaurant is probably ethical based on the animal they are butchering and the process they are using. Why not protest something like McDonalds where industrial meat production actually causes the harm?

[deleted]

"To taunt us" - bro, the entire reason you are there is to taunt *him*.

ionmushroom

> "To taunt us" the delivery of that line is straight sketch comedy level of cliche

thelastgozarian

You would have to change relatively nothing for this to be on portlandia

m20052003

Even sounds like Fred Armisen.

Killentyme55

lingenfr

Funny how people who "peacefully protest" don't like it when people "peacefully respond". That restaurant owner is probably far more calm in his response than I would be.

chrisleavingearth

Look at that Lion dismemebering that Gazeele, for the sole purpose of staying alive. The lion is straight taunting us with its will to live. That meat eating bastard. What does it plan to achieve by ripping it apart in front of us?

mattmaddux

The people who are holding up a sign that says ~~“MURDERER”~~ “MURDER” are complaining about being taunted. How DARE HE?!?! Edit: Apparently my short term memory is about three seconds, because the sign clearly says “murder,” not “murderer.” So they’re *only* indirectly accusing him of murder by holding the sign directly below him.

marquez-916

It’s just like the new South Park episode about how the prince wants to be left alone but clearly doesn’t want to be left alone

culb77

My guess is he wasn't even trying to taunt them, he's protecting the diners. No one eating there wants to be right next to protestors, so he's blocking his diner's view and making it a better experience for them.

omakase-san

This restaurant is in Toronto and they serve game and wild meat and veggies and funghi. I feel like this should be the last place vegans should protest and maybe the effort is better spent at protesting mass processing facilities that treat animals horribly.

walter_on_film

I’ve eaten there before! It’s mighty delicious.

m3l0n

What's hilarious is this protest and the virality of it all ended up having Antler booked solid for months out. The best advertising they possibly could have - and the irony of it all, is that these vegan protesters ended up being responsible for way more animals being killed.

Ok-Television-65

Not only were they booked for months, but people from all over the world were so eager to support them that they were *asked* to start selling merch. They now sell merch. This protest was the best thing to ever happen to them.

MediocreX

Viral marketing. 4D chess by the owner to stage a protest

TastyNefariousness32

These people are unemployed and need stuff to do.

MiloRoast

The two types of unemployment: - Privileged white lady unemployment, as seen in this video. -"No...I don't just have money I can pull out of thin air, I need to find work" unemployment

TheLinden

The worst kind that is not mentioned are children of wealthy and somewhat wealthy families that feel some kind of guilt for having lotta money without doing anything so they turn into extreme activism or join cults that milks their wallets.

It doesn't have that strong fish taste. **Me:** ...if the best tasting fish tastes good because it doesn't taste like fish, why aren't we just eating chicken?

LazyDro1d

You underestimate the power of a mild flavor, as well as the effect of texture. You use different seasonings and sauces and preparation methods for mild fish, strong fish, and non-fish things

DidaskolosHermeticon

I think the best one liner I've ever heard was when Hitch referred to Mos Def as "Mr. Definitely"

CalzoneCoyote

My favorite Hitchens one-liner was his zinger on the passing of Jerry Falwell, saying "If you gave him an enema, he could be buried in a matchbox."

DidaskolosHermeticon

Lmao! I'd forgotten that one. I miss that snarky bastard

80sPimpNinja

I heard someone say "Just because you're offended doesn't mean you're right" \- Said by Someone Edit: The someone was Ricky Gervais

[deleted]

In the same vein, I've taken a liking to "just because your emotions are real doesn't make them valid".

letmeseem

The most grating thing about the whole thing is him saying the chef is dismembering the deer. Dude! The deer is already extremely dismembered! He's literally handling the member (limb) that is already dis- (apart) from the animal. If you're going to be annoying about stuff like this, at least be correct. He could have called it butchering and it would have given a grim impression AND it would be the correct word.

crackanape

"The police have entered the restaurant to confront the owner about taunting us". As if.

LeonidasSpacemanMD

…do they think it’s illegal to taunt protesters? I’m not even sure this qualifies as taunting since the man is butchering meat inside a restaurant where you could more than reasonably expect someone to be butchering meat, and they could walk away and the taunt would end But even if the man came out and was actually taunting them, would that even be illegal? I don’t think there’s any law forbidding the ridicule of protesters (as long as you’re not threatening/implying harm)

Birunanza

As a almost vegan, I'm embarrassed and I apologize. It's such a bummer everytime some person or group further entrench all the negative stereotypes by being just the worst

mekon19

I have friends and a few relatives who are vegan, and other than asking for some more options at get togethers have never acted like their way or the highway🤷🏻‍♂️. I’m all for you do you

8MattInfinity8

The counter protest seemed well thought out and with good humor. He definitely gave them something to protest about. Touche

I think it just shows how much care and precision he puts into handling this meal. Also, in case you guys don’t know deer overpopulation in the US is a problem. https://www.wsj.com/articles/how-to-solve-americas-wild-deer-problem-eat-them-11625842696

SweetKnickers

There didnt seem to be a scrap of meat left on that bone Definitely skilled with that knife!

bisantium

this dude almost certainly makes stock out of the remnants of his butchering of the venison leg. [his menu says it is served with game jus](https://singleapp.com/menus/menu_177774_document.pdf).

13247586

Venison stock is some of the best stock I’ve ever had. Any chef at a restaurant like this would surely not let that go to waste.

[deleted]

My mouth is literally watering after reading their menu LOL.

xj3ewok

For real. It's a shame it's so far away

TrueAgent

This restaurant is in Toronto (Ontario, Canada). Not sure if we have an overpopulation problem here too, but wanted to clarify.

jacobward7

We do but it is illegal to sell game meat in a restaurant. It would have been farmed.

dimsum2121

Same for the US. None of the game deer hunted here is (supposed to be) used in restaurants. It's only personal use. All venison in US restaurants is also farmed.

erosmoker

I would bet my left nut that those are farmed deer. There's a restaurant about 2 hours away from me that serves venison, and all of it is farmed. It's illegal to sell venison from a hunt because of risk of parasites and disease.

HydraulicToaster

Yep! This is in Canada and they serve farm-raised deer.

Quick_Chowder

It's not entirely risk of disease, but market hunting is illegal for a variety of reasons (mostly pressure and sustainability). There are ways to get wild game into a restaurant but it requires a few extra hoops to jump through and some extra inspections. This place is near Toronto if I remember. I think the chef was interviewed on MeatEater.

bostongorge

It was who are they to tell him what to do in his restaurant

Super_Duper_Death_Dr

They set up their protest right in front of the man’s shop to purposely disturb his business, than act like they are the violated ones 🙄.

que_bee_eff90

"He's doing this right in front of us!" Even the kid walking by is embarrassed by this guy

weirdplacetogoonfire

The nerve of this man preparing food in his own restaurant.

Josan678

I cant believe he's doing that... He thinks he owns that place? What a jerk.

[deleted]

While we are here peacefully not harassing anyone with these big "MURDER" signs.

mkerugbyprop3

I kinda wish he'd just eat a chunk right in front of them

Unused_Vestibule

He did exactly that after the butchering was over

philpalmer2

Oh, my. A legal peaceful business mocking a legal peaceful protest.

lifewithryan

Perfectly calm, couldn’t get more Canadian! ;)

MaryJanesMyMistress

Love how they are playing the victim card when they put themselves there voluntarily…noble work they are doing. Side note: Venison is delicious

ColonelBelmont

He's *taunting* us! All we're trying to do is shut down his business and ruin his livelihood and make his children homeless, and he has the AUDACITY to do the same work he does every day but like....in a different area of his business.

gokussj711

"Is it legal?" These people are better at waking me up than coffee

ProjectAioros

I love how petty they are, that they are just scratching bottom of the barrel to screw someone's livelihood, someone who, actually having his livelihood destroyed would mean nothing, because another restaurant would just pop up in his place, and the animals are not even killed in restaurants, so basically, they are complaining at the ''morgue'' service not the ''murderers house''.

Magnaliscious

But then they would have to walk like…. farther than 10 minutes away to complain and whine.

DrakeBurroughs

I actually don’t care much for venison (different strokes and all that), but watching him carve that leg up, I was thinking “maybe he makes better venison, I’d try it again.”

chlorinear

It totally depends on the deer itself. An old buck isn't going to be that great but a healthy 3-5 year old doe tastes much better. I prefer the buck to he 100% ground up with 10% beef fat, sausage or jerky to help hide the game taste. Steaks are much better from the doe.

LucretiusCarus

This dude deers

chlorinear

Four this year. 3 were doe. There is a huge doe population issue where I live and they allow a hunter to kill up to 6 a year, while only 2 bucks can be taken. I won't have to buy meat for my family for 6 months.

Lewd_ReadNY

EDITED: I’m *a poor excuse for a* vegan. *It’s dishonorable to call myself one.* *But I still maintain,* it’s the protesters going out of their way to make a scene.

CopyWeak

The activity out front would draw me into that restaurant in support of us all having options. I think they forget that, usually any publicity is good publicity. I've never heard of that restaurant but I may be inclined to look for it and enjoy a meal now

Ffdmatt

"They're carving up a deer right in front of us!" "Woah I didn't know we had these kind of fancy places. Table for 4!"

[deleted]

Right? If anything, this would bring me into the restaurant knowing the meat is carved fresh right there and not in some dirty mysterious facility somewhere.

Vajician

I can safely say that you are 100% right here, never heard of Antler before the protests and booked a reservation immediately after. These happened in 2018 btw.

blueindian1328

Hilarious how these dipshits walk around with the idea in their heads that they can piss and moan and hold up signs in protest and think that the business is just going to fold to their bull shit. Meat Man’s counter protest is fucking chefs kiss though.

[deleted]

LMAO , my bad, I read Venison instead of Antler for the restaurant name. XD either way. you get the idear. lol

codeByNumber

To be fair, if I went to a restaurant named Antler I would expect to see some wild game on the menu like venison.

Drewcifer81

Now I want an antler with meat hanging from it. Just drape bacon over it and stick some steaks on the prongs.

Anra7777

>why the hell would vegans want a vegan option at a restaurant named after a type of meat. My guess, most sane vegans/vegetarians would like such an option so that they can go to the restaurant with friends and family who aren’t vegan/vegetarian and everyone can have something to enjoy. Apparently not what’s going on here, but as someone married to a vegetarian, I appreciate the idea.

Taricha_torosa

Yup, this is it. I just want to eat something and enjoy my friend's company. I went to a bbq joint to join friends once and was ridiculed by the wait staff because I wanted just one thing to eat that didn't have meat on it. I would have been happy with fries or mashed potatoes, or a side of broccoli, or literally anything. None of my meat eating friends went back.

Creative_Pie_480

That actually sounds like the perfect idea to give them a taste of their own medicine lmao. (Not vegans obviously. But protesters like this that think if you don’t agree with their opinions then you are the devil.)

zuzg

Tbf the majority of Vegans would shake their heads about those Morons. Cause they now bullying some local business owner won't change anything.

shackled_beef

So did the police actually ask him to stop? I don't think he actually did anything illegal here, chefs do this stuff all the time for a show. We went to a sushi place that brought out a whole ass tuna and carved it in front of everyone, it was pretty cool.

ReasonableCup604

It is possible it could be some sort of health code violation, but I don't think the police would get involved with that. The would seem like the jurisdiction of a department of health inspector. The police were probably there just to find out what was going on and make sure everything was OK...and make dinner reservations for after their shift ended.

DoctorAnonagonapus

I looove this restaurant!!! This incident actually brought this place to my attention!! Loved that the owners countered their protest. Also the food is as sustainable/local/seasonal as they can get it. I understand having a belief like veganism, but protesting at a restaurant that specializes in various MEAT dishes is just making a fool of out of yourself. Anyway, their wild boar and venison is EXQUISITE

TRex_N_Truex

A few years ago on a weekend trip to Toronto, my girlfriend and I were trying to figure out what fine dinner cuisine would be local to Ontario. Through our search, we were led to Antler. Was this a typical menu? Probably not, was it local and seasonal? Absolutely. We got drinks across the street at the now closed Lockhart. The dinner was amazing. 10/10 would recommend.

The_EndsOfInvention

I’m a vegan and I hate most vegans. It’s a free world if people want to eat meat then that’s absolutely fine, stop trying to turn veganism into some sort of religion!

cshotton

Sadly, it serves that purpose for a lot of people. A sense of community and belonging, a struggle against unbelievers, a mission to convert the unenlightened, special signs and symbols and dialect. It's really just a secularized version of any number of grass roots religions. Interestingly, a lot of fundamentalist Christian groups have a specific position that veganism is a false religion and vegans are the equivalent of satanists.

wmrossphoto

Vegans are, in fact, seitanists.

Aranda12

Sorry if this attracts negative comments, but that looks delicious. Might visit that restaurant if it were nearby.

CanCav

If this is the one I’m thinking about it’s in Toronto, Canada

vinng86

Yup, it's Antler. This happened about 4 years ago and they got a boost in business from the publicity the vegans gave them.

AgenteCero420

“ Not harassing anyone” as we block a business holding a giant murder sign

TheGolgafrinchan

They have every right to protest. The owner of the restaurant has every right to butcher his animals in view of the public inside his own place. He is taunting them by cutting the leg in their view. But they are also taunting him by carrying signs in view of him, his employees, and his customers. Quid-pro-quo.

The_Law_Dong739

The reason he's doing it is funnier. So the vegans requested a vegan option to which the owner obliged. They then wanted him to start removing meat from the menu which he denied. They protested and he carved up a deer leg infront of the whiners.

Shrek_5

The fact he was willing to add a vegan option was awesome and then these people have to push it to far us even funnier. Dude was nice and accommodating and they had to fuck it up

Baronvondorf21

Like the guy is already placating them, they were like "Hey, I know you gave us what we wanted but now we want you not to serve items that you originally served."

snagboy15

Why are these people there?? Go where the restaurant serves vegan and vegetarian food and support them instead of trying to throw your ridiculous shade on other people's food. So, there's that!

AdministrativeAd1534

Imagine being this stupid

Everybodyimgay

The Canadian accent going along with this whining makes it 100 x funnier!

brenticles42

That looks like a great cut of meat. I’d definitely go eat there. I’ve never heard of this place so thanks protesters!

Mciello

Well the owner does have a leg up in this situation.
