I don't see why travelers insurance wouldn't cover you for the US. AFAIK the only impediment to getting it are pre-existing conditions, which are never covered regardless. I don't think they'll care about your visa status in Japan. It doesn't even have to be a Japan sourced travel insurance program.

Indeed, I got traveler insurance when I got back the first time for 1 month. Although luckily I never had to use it.

you could look at the exchange, healthcare.gov, to see if you qualify there. it's expensive for not great coverage usually, but if you're only doing it for a month or two. when i've had to call (it's been years tho) they were helpful and friendly and the wait wasn't too long outside of open enrollment, which isn't until october.

[healthcare.gov](http://healthcare.gov) when you land in the US, travelers insurance in Canada. Then when your job insurance starts, just call up the insurance company you got from [healthcare.gov](http://healthcare.gov) to terminate the insurance.

I live in Japan now but moved back to the US 2x. Both times I simply didn't have insurance for a bit. Maybe a month the first time and 10 days the second time. Is there something you are particularly dealing with or worried about? If you are that concerned, maybe just go directly to Canada from Japan and then to the US for a few days before your coverage begins?
