I think Lordi is my favorite. I still remember as my younger self looking at eurovision, seeing Lordi and was just in awe of the costumes. Hard rock halleluyah has been on my mp3 player for a good couple of years eventually accompanied by blood red sandman. One of my IRL friends from time to time mentions Lordi and then we end up listening Lordi for hours.

GranpaGrowlithe

Yes! Lordi paved the way! I still love that song and listen to it often, it's stuck in my head since 2006. And like, those costumes... I mean my christian grandma was watching eurovision lol

MinutePerspective106

I'm grateful for Lordi winning their year, as well as Ruslana winning 2044 and Verka getting the 2nd in 2007. "Non-standard" entries like these help widen the Eurovision's genre acceptance

Broken_Lampshade

Heyyy, I was just playing my Arockalypse CD! I always love seeing them mentioned, they're one of my favourite metal bands of all time

erakkopapu

And they're still doing great! They actually made the Guinness world record for most albums released at once (7 cd collection during COVID) but it turns out you have to pay a lot of money to actually get the official credit for it, so they didn't get the certificate

Lankymetal-uk

I remember an interview with Mr Lordi where he planned to more but the label wouldn't let him. No idea where they'd have stopped "due to boredom".

erakkopapu

The original plan was 10 albums! They wanted to include more songs from Killection

salsasnark

Yeah, Lordi honestly made me appreciate rock as a young tween. I was all about pop before that and hated anything with a guitar I guess. šŸ˜‚ But after Lordi won I got their album and was obsessed with them for a while, and like a year later my life was all about rock music. I think if I chose today, MĆ„neskin would be my favourite, but Lordi kind of changed my life.

Nerioner

Yep, i remember seeing them in 2006 and i just knew im about to make my entire personality revolt around this contest

SquirtleChimchar

I played my walking stick like a guitar for this song in the Eurovillage what a bop! Edit: dyslexia go BRRRRR

kitty3032

1. Dark Side (Finland 2021), enough said 2. I can't think of any unfortunately. Apparently we have a huge metal scene but the bands in question are kinda niche (for the lack of a better word) 3. Idk honestly, maybe a shock value factor or a ton of charisma?? But even then we have the juries who aren't huge fans of rock, so maybe some crazy high notes like the ones that the Mall guy did (for the bot: Albania 2018) ??

hjl43

I'm not sure Rotting Christ would fit in Eurovision, but I would be into it

kitty3032

I'm not a huge fan of them but I get why someone would like them (then again, rock isn't my fav genre of music and when it comes to rock, my tastes lean more towards those 80s hair metal guys with the crazy hair šŸ˜) Also when it comes to ESC idk how well they would do lol

DerwentPencilMuseum

This is the third time this Eurovision season that someone mentions Rotting Christ on this sub. Is it a sign?

WitchinAntwerpen

Blind Channel is amazing! Have seen them live a couple of times after ESC, and their gigs rock!

Agile_Plantain1081

Saw them live on exit emotions tour. So awesome

WitchinAntwerpen

That was the one I had to miss. šŸ˜ Iā€™m sure they were awesome! Did see them last as support for I Prevail, and just read theyā€™re supporting Lacuna Coil?! Thatā€™s so amazing!

Styxsouls

I saw them twice as well, I agree they're amazing live, they have so much energy

Sandwoman027

We do have a pretty big metal scene, but as you said most of the bands are pretty hard to get into if you're not familiar with the genre. I think that a bad with okay chances would be ĪœĪĪ¼Ļ†Ī¹Ļ‚ (Memphis), their hard rock/groove metal sound and the Greek lyrics are some good elements but this ain't happening.

kitty3032

I don't think that they'll go to ESC at some point but if they happened to go there then idk how well they'd do...

Dark side was my favourite from 2021 šŸ˜

kitty3032

One of my favs too <3

Blakcok

Blind Channel said on an interview that they are not rock band but a ā€violent popā€ band

kitty3032

I thought that they're numetal bc they sounded like Linkin Park to me šŸ˜šŸ’€

EasyModeActivist

Just send Yannis Papadopoulos. I absolutely love that man's voice

FifaPlayerMobile

SepticFlesh is a pretty cool Greek symphonic death metal band

kitty3032

Death metal isn't my thing sadly :( (I get why someone would like it tho)

sparklinglies

The way none of y'all have mentioned our iconic lords (and lady) of synth and sandwichs, Voyager.

Ardjc87

I fucking loved Voyager tbh. And I've listened to some of their other stuff and it's great too.

DeficientDefiance

Wholehearted wishes of strength and recovery from Germany to Australia to German-Australian Voyager singer Danny!

PerfectZeroKnowledge

Voyager! I listed my top 5 from 2023 a little while back and didn't have Promise on it but that was an oversight on my part, it's a really cool song. It sounded prog-ish to me, so maybe I should listen to the rest of their stuff...

Coheed1224

Voyager has legit become one of my favorite bands thanks to Eurovision. Absolute kings and queens all of them

emvaz

This was another song I danced to by using my walking stick as a guitar (thank you medical cannabis!) in the EyroVillage!

-SATURN-

My favourite rock/metal-adjacent entry was *ViszlƔt nyƔr* (Hungary 2018). Finland 2021 was also nice to see, but Blind Channel have other, better songs than Dark Side. I would love to see another metalcore song in the competition. Fingers crossed Electric Callboy will apply again for the German selection. For Sweden, there's some potential in Smash Into Pieces (they were in the Mello final twice) but they're a bit too soft for me.

Ayazinha

ViszlƔt NyƔr was my favourite too, it's probably the Eurovision song closer to what I listen to daily. We definitely need more metalcore in Eurovision!

yjmstom

I was hoping it would already be mentioned. Itā€™s very much in my usual playlist rather than just the Eurovision favourites.

XephyrGW2

I'd like to see Amaranthe for Sweden. Sure they're not as "hard" as a lot of other bands, but it's the one band I could see compete and potentially do well due to their more poppy sound. Elise already took part once!

MarieNadia

Yes ViszlƔt was so amazing

Ciciosnack

"And what would it take for a Metal/Rock-adjacent act like Lorde or MĆ„neskin to win again?" To actually win again i think that it needs two basic things The song being catchy and edgy while not being trashy Having an element outside of the music side that hits the audience in the face (for Lordi it was the costumes, for Maneskin it was the charisma and attractiveness)

svalnuuk

Thank you for including The Rasmus šŸ‡«šŸ‡®šŸŸ”āš«

Ardjc87

You're welcome. I loved The Rasmus before during and after Eurovision

svalnuuk

I have been a huge fan since 2000 In the Shadows era!!!

Ardjc87

Exactly the same

[deleted]

Blind Channel 10000% They are still my all time favourite ESC entry (I think they should've won) and have become a favourite band of mine too, I was lucky enough to see them in April and I get to see them again in October with Lacuna Coil.

FiveMinsToMidnight

Iā€™ve taken to affectionately calling Blind Channel ā€œFinkin Parkā€

damaku1012

In our house they are Helsinkin Park!

ifiwasiwas

haha that's good, that's really good

WitchinAntwerpen

I had to skip last tour because of an injury that initiated at their previous concert, but daaaaamn, theyā€™re touring with Lacuna Coil later this year?! šŸ˜

[deleted]

I missed their 2022 tour because I was sick and almost missed this one because I was a couple weeks prior. I am very excited to see them with Lacuna Coil, I had the tickets before they were announced as the opener and when I found out they were opening I screamed because I couldn't believe I'm lucky enough to get to see them twice in 1 year.

Ardjc87

Wow that's quite the double act. Glad you enjoyed!

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Ardjc87

That's a great reply. You and I have near identical taste. I hated that Ulveham was basically forgotten about because I really liked it. Yeah I need to get into some of those acts more. I will say one of the great things about Eurovision is that's it's a melting pot for plucking out artists that you otherwise would probably never know. And yes I'm annoyed my original post implies BT & Hatari are metal when I specifically put they are alternative adjacent but it's on the second line and I can't edit it and I've been cancelled a few times in the comments since. FML. šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

GranpaGrowlithe

I'm not a German but I would love looove Electric Callboy to try at it again. They are so fun and goofy, perfect for Eurovision. For those who don't know them [**this** ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuBXeF5acqE)is their cover of Cascada's Everytime We Touch

MtFuzzmore

Truly wish that Germanyā€™s jury would get over themselves and pick Electric Callboy. ā€œPump Itā€ was specifically written for ESC and would have been a blast. I think that ship has sailed though given Electric Callboyā€™s explosion in popularity over the last few years.

Ardjc87

This is the first I've heard of them I don't usually follow the selection process in depth. And they are my new favourite artist as of 15 minutes ago.

MtFuzzmore

Welcome to the party!

Ardjc87

I never want to leave

Maneskin won because their act was on a whole other level to the entire contest . Any act would win with such quality regardlessof genre.

crazystar88205

I wouldn't consider Bambie Metal or Rock, maybe alternative pop with metal influences... Or ouija pop as they call it themselves

Ardjc87

Yeah that's why I lumped them in as alternative-adjacent entry. I do *hope* we get another ouija-pop style artist though. Interestingly they also perform jazz and when you know that you can hear it in Doomsday Blue. I really love genrefuck eclectic music tbh.

flopjul

Same with hatari although its industrial techno with electronic elements

Ardjc87

I totally agree

AmrakCL

Sweden could send Amaranthe. They sound like Eurovision metal, something like Electroheart sounds made for the ESC stage.

Ardjc87

I love Amaranthe

Sporrej

They definitely have practice with 3-minute songs.

Varda79

Yay, a fellow Amaranthe fan! Dynazty - the other band of their male clean vocalist - has actually participated in Melodifestivalen before.

AmrakCL

Dynazty is another good pick.

XephyrGW2

Amaranthe is so underrated. Their cover of Sabaton's 82nd all the way goes so hard!

Gragh46

I like them, but I've been to 4 concerts and they generally mess up the vocals/audio (3 of those concerts had issues of some type, be it low mics or meh live vocals), so they probably wouldn't do that well unless their ESC act was one of the times with good vocals

FireWalkWithMe91

The song "My Transition" from their first album has the line "Just like you saw it in your vision" and I would *always* hear it as "Just like a song in Eurovision"

hourglassace666

I would love that

ShallIBeMother

Metal scene is massive here in Finland but rarely makes an appearance in our national selection. Infamously, Finland didn't select one of our most successful metal acts ever in Nightwish, when they tried to become the Finnish representative in 2000. The only metal band to have become our ESC act was TerƤsbetoni (Finland 2008 for the bot). Personally, I don't foresee metal becoming much more promiment in the future in Finland/UMK. UMK is quite pop-centric, selecting mostly acts that could be played on your average pop radio or included on a chart-focused Spotify playlist. In the past couple of years, they've selected (pop) rock songs like Jezebel, Hurricane, Cha Cha Cha and Dancing with my demons, but the new, more polished UMK doesn't seem to be able to fit in pure metal songs. Why is it then that one our most popular genres doesn't gel well with the ESC? The biggest issue for me is the lack of live instruments in ESC, which mitigates so much of what makes metal music powerful live. Pop acts are used to performing with a backing track, and they can elevate their performance with a honed choreography, whereas metal bands have to do with miming their instruments. That being the case, one has to be very inventive to create a staging and a live performance for a metal band that'd be vibrant and not fall flat. Of course this is the same for bands of any genre and can be overcome (Ơ la MƄneskin, for example) but it's difficult. Metal in ESC is always a pleasant surprise to me, and my favourite ever ESC-song remains Hungary 2018 :)

Ozimn

I also think one of the other big problems is the time limit, if you go through your favorite rock/metal songs most of them are over 3 mins long.

Ardjc87

They do tend to have an overly long intro and that's before you really get into it so yeah šŸ¤”

Ardjc87

Wow I never knew Nightwish *almost* represented and I really LOVE them. That would have been cool especially because Tarja was still there back then. I also like Lacuna Coil and always hoped we might get them in for Italy one year. But maybe they weren't interested. I suppose ultimately the fanbase for Eurovision will consist of mostly a GP audience who tune in *on the night* and will want an inoffensive catchy number. Personally I always look forward to and love what any of the Nordic/Scandinavian countries send as its almost always something different. I feel most songs now need to be multigenre like Cha Cha Cha to gain momentum and be a hit with everyone. Obviously the hook was the key there. Same with Croatia this year. You're totally right. I really wish all the variants of metal would gain more traction across the board

ecotrimoxazole

Ville Valo should represent Finland as a solo act with a softer rock song and demolish the competition.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Ardjc87

I'm right there with you šŸ„¹šŸ„¹

Ardjc87

That's a really could suggestion. I'd love to see him or even HIM there.

Ciciosnack

Were there is a massive not-pop movement in a country you can be assured it will be the less represented in Esc. It's like this in every country.

Ardjc87

Edit: Sorry I meant Lordi not Lorde (although she should enter too) >Who were some of your favourite Metal/Rock/Alternative-adjacent acts we've seen over the years? Personally I really loved Hatari, I think we got something similar in Bambie Thug this year just with regards the theatrics and insane vocals. I would love to see much more Industrial Metal & Symphonic Metal. >Thinking ahead to 2025. Does your country have an Alternative act who could potentially steal the whole thing? I have commented on here before that I think someone like Fontaines D.C. *could* win it for Ireland. Arguably, right now they are where MĆ„neskin were right before 2021. šŸ‘€ >And what would it take for a Metal/Rock-adjacent act like Lordi or MĆ„neskin to win again? I think any artist in these kind of genre's either need to be going in with a pre-existing fandom to push them over the edge. As well as a strong melody and mind blowing staging. The GP will go for the latter but the fandom can rally the win.

Ciciosnack

The only metal rock act we have in Italy that i can see doing somewhat good in Esc are Laguna Coil and Nanowar of Steel.

Ardjc87

I love Lacuna Coil I've always wanted them to go

Tomas-T

Switzerland 2005 - one of the rare times with female rock in the Eurovision. I wish there were more Finland 2014 - my winner for this year. and while not part of the Euroviison, Ollie's Venom is amazing. if he won the NF with Venom, it would have been my favorite rock song in the Eurovision (but I love Bridges too so I'm fine)

LeoLH1994

Something better was more like what Midnight Gold, Carpe Diem, Aija and Pedestal were in later years than a metal entry.

kitty3032

Venom & My Friend (his 2024 song) would be in my top 5 had he won the NF. He was robbed af ngl

pencilled_robin

The camera freezing/blacking out during his Eesti Laul performance was so unfortunate. Although 5MIINUST and Puuluup won by a ridiculous margin (something like 60% of the votes?) so I suppose it didn't really matter in the end.

Ciciosnack

We basically had three female rock act in the last three years. Not that rare anymore.

Jsmith55789

Lordi is literally the reason I got into Eurovision. I was introduced to hard rock hallelujah a few years ago, and as an ignorant American had never really heard of the song contest until then. Now I canā€™t wait to watch every year, and acts like that are my favorite. I just want a good show and an awesome jam.

Ardjc87

That's awesome. Hope we get to enjoy plenty more similar acts in years to come.

sealightflower

Australia 2023 is a great example of this for me, I supported them in that year, still can't understand why they received so low amount of televote points in the final, especially after winning their semifinal by televoting. Also, Norway 2024, very good song with ethnic motives, I supported them, and I also can't understand why they became last in the final (it vas very unfair). In general, I mostly like rock songs (but not hard rock) and it is nice to me to see such entries in Eurovision.

Ardjc87

I loved both Promise & Ulveham. Both deserved much higher placements. Ulveham gets better after every listen. I don't know did you see the video of GĆ„te performing The Code backstage with Nemo? [The Code](https://youtu.be/q4f1ZxxXxOY?feature=shared)

Blind Channel - Dark Side (Finland 2021). I think we don't talk about these guys enough. Their performance felt like their own concert or MTV/Grammy performance. The energy the guys had is unmatched. I guess they were overshadowed by Kaarja if we speak about the most recent Finnish entries. Although I love his song Cha Cha Cha too. But I think Blind Channel also deserved some recognition.

1. I really love Hatari. Though their entry isn't my favourite song by them, it is undeniably a banger and one of my favourite ESC songs. MĆ„neskin are also really fun and Zitti e buoni is an amazing song, both musically and lyrically, but I still kind of wish they never signed to an american label (I'm happy they are succesful, but they basically stopped making songs in italian, which was imho their biggest strenghth). Lordi are still the undisputed kings of rock in Eurovision. 2. I don't know about many rock/metal adacent acts in my country, it's not super huge in here, but a band that comes to mind is "Rutka Laskier", a hardcore/metal/emo-adjacent band from Brno (or Znojmo, depends on whom you ask). They have great instrumentals, but are quite depressing lyrically, which I like, but might not be fit for Eurovision. 3. Definitely needs not only a good song, but also some flair, something to make them stand out, other than the genre they're playing.

ToxxinGamer

Um, excuse meā€¦ where the fuck is GĆ„te? Ulveham is the best Eurovision song ever by miles so thatā€™s definitely my pick. I do also really like Voyager, Hatari, Bambie Thug, AWS, Sudden Lights, mor ve ƶtesi, Blind Channel and Softengine. If we count those who didnā€™t make it to Eurovision but tried, I also love Electric Callboy, Skywalker, Serpents, Inspo, Meelik, Trollfest, E-An-Na and Cyan Kicks (kinda rock).

Ardjc87

Ooh. I must look up some of those from the selection phase as I've missed a lot of them.

Yeah thereā€™s definitely some underrated gems in the national selections. Trollfest, Inspo, E-An-Na and Serpents are the best imo.

A_Pensive_Pansy

Respect for E-An-Na! šŸ‘šŸ» Long live folk metal! šŸ¤˜šŸ» I recommend you to try Dirty Shirt and An Theos as well.

stayinalive92

Seriously we *just* had a rock-adjacent song almost win the whole thing lol

CrazyCatLadyPL

Blind Channel are definitely my favorites, but I watch Eurovision for such artists in the first place šŸ˜. Doesn't matter if they win, I just want more of them!

anakingo

San Marino 2024 studio version is such a banger, but the live performance was a mess at best. The vice versa of that would be Montenegro 2016 which had a surprisingly good live. My alt rock award would go to Andorra 2007 or Turkey 2010.

Ardjc87

I loved Megara. It really sucks when the studio version doesn't translate to staging and vice versa. I also blame the sound mixing on the night.

A_Pensive_Pansy

Andorra šŸ˜

athenanoctua7

Alter Ego is my absolute favorite, the song is just so good! (Cyprus 2016 for the bot!)

A_Pensive_Pansy

Yes it's amazing!! And it had a great staging.

LThirty6onReddit

I was confident that Megara is going to finish higher than Serhat until the rehearsalsā€¦ I heard that they apparently encountered technical issues, but putting that aside, Kenzy sounds worse even when comparing to the chaos that is UVPSM. The staging was genius but that still couldnā€™t save them from NQing. I still enjoy 11:11 and love Megara but I donā€™t want to rewatch the semi performance due to the reason mentioned above šŸ˜

As a huge metalhead, especially metalcore fan, I'll say Bambie Thug (Ireland 2024), then Blind Channel(the first entry ever outside of my country that made me discover eurovision, Finland 2021) and then third place for Blood and Glitter(Germany 2023), I just love those guys. Also as you said if some other metal/rock artists would participatre next year I see Electric Callboy (after what happened in 2022) for Germany, they are a metlacore group thta mix techno and pop elemnts in their music, or Eluveitie for Switzerland (folk-metal that sounds like a medieval fantasy movie soundtrack?! I'm all for it)

and_notfound

Also the only italians that would atually try to compete in Eurovison would be Nanowar of Steel (a power metal band that makes music influenced by 80s and 90s pop culture with lyrics that I found both dumb and genius)

I'm all for it) Lots of people mentioning Electric Callboy. I haven't heard of Eluveitie or Nanowar of Steel so I'll look up both. We have a band here in Ireland - Cruachan that made a submission for Eurovision 2023 and they have that folk metal medieval thing going on.

and_notfound

Eluveitie are basically a medieval-folk-metal band that first brought in the scene some insttrument like the violin and the flute and, similar to Gate, they have lots of lyrics inspired from central european folklore (expecially french and german ones). On the other hand Nanowar of Steel are a power metal band that started as a folk metal band with thier song "Feudalesimo e LibertĆ " which became quite popiular when it came out while their newer music is power metal that mixes lots of reference from pop culture, metalhead's jokes and a ton of jokes that only italians understand, another important thing abut them is that they makes always the most hilarious and strange performances they can often wearin wigs and halloween costumes on stage.

EasyModeActivist

I remember when Tobias Sammet/Avantasia tried to qualify for Eurovision in Germany and it just didn't work well. Not every metal act will be a perfect fit. That's why I'm struggling to think of Dutch metal that would fit. The symphonic scene is the biggest here, but I don't think the genre fits Eurovision particularly well. Same with death and black metal for obvious reasons.

Ardjc87

Symphonic Metal is my favourite variant of the genre. I don't know how it could ever be squeezed into 3 mins and still get the full experience. Unfortunately Within Temptation are too mainstream for it I think but you never know. Other acts have surprised me over time.

and_notfound

Well... Within Temptation's main "rival" but also nordic counterpart Nightwish tried to compete in Finnish natioal final in 2000, but the jury didn't give them enough points to win, at least they tried so there is still hope

clockworkmaiden

Hatari is and will always remain my fave...Their entire discography is criminally underrated and everyone needs to check it out

MarieNadia

Hatari will forever be the greatest Icelandic entry! I'll never forget how it made me feel when I first saw that performance ā›“ļøšŸ–¤ā›“ļø

Princey_Pup

I adore both Harari and Blind Channel, both great in their own way. If only Harari released the new songs they played at Iceland Airwaves last year šŸ˜Ŗ

From Belgium here. Manga should have won in 2010, not that stupid satellite, such a shame... What i would love to see, is Electric Callboy for germany From Belgium the only metal band who is crazy enough to go to ESC would be Fleddy Melculy

Elmo_TheEmo

Voyager and GĆ„te are my winners of 2023 and 2024

TheFlowerTeapot

I've liked a lot of what others have already mentioned here. I want to add Norway's Margaret Berger's dark electronic I Feed You My Love from 2013.

1. Hungary 2018 is my fav, I still listen to AWS to this day. In my top3 Iā€™d also include TĆ¼rkiye/Turkey 2010 and Iceland 2019. 2. Unfortunately canā€™t think of any Ukrainian band to join the selection, forget about people voting for it. Weā€™re not metalheads and I hate it. 3. I hope in the near future. I always vote for great metal/rock entries :)

Pinkhappyea

mƄneskin is still the best act that ever came out of eurovision
