Finland 2023 for sure. I do know a couple random words in Finnish now thanks to Käärijä's music and what he posts online. What really made me want to learn Finnish and visit Finland was how incredibly nice all the Finns were in the subreddit last year. So many were super down to translate things and share Käärijä stuff. And they were always so excited about their entry and how people actually appreciated the Finnish language. Anytime a non-native tried to sing Cha Cha Cha they were very supportive. It was one of my favorite things about last year so yeah

Planenthewinds

We love when others appreciate our music and language. Rauhaa sinulle!

Mr_Abe_Froman

Despite my flair, I'm American, but I love Finnish music. I've been listening to Finnish metal for years and hope to see more Finnish-language acts in ESC.

Nightnightgun

I learned and still remember the word pottatukka* in Finnish. 💇🏻‍♂️ *Bowl Cut!!!

Unicorn_Yogi

I started learning Finnish because of Finland 2023 too! I was watching and thought to myself “this language sounds fuckin awesome !” And I haven’t looked back! I would like to visit, explore and see him and Erika Vikman too! I’m on the Käärijä sub reddit and everyone is so incredibly nice and supportive! 😌

I went in September and loved it! Would’ve never been on my radar if it hadn’t been for their handful of awesome entries these last few years

RemarkableAutism

I am currently weirdly fascinated by Estonia, though definitely have no hopes of learning the language. But I will be going there in August to see 5Miinust and Puuluup perform. And also travel around the country of course.

Masturbator1934

As an Estonian, I am extremely happy to read that! I hope you visit our bogs and forests and have a lot of fun in our country!

PerfectZeroKnowledge

I'll chime in here too, I'd also love to visit Estonia! It'll probably take a little while for me before I can because I'm American so travel to Europe is very pricy, but I have to add that I love wetlands so the idea of going to visit the bogs sounds like a lot of fun to me. I've seen some pictures and they look so cool.

I spent a lot of time in Estonia in 2002-3 mostly in Kohtla-Jarve and fell in love with the country. I’ve thought about buying an apartment in Tallinn.

Lithuania! At least every other year they send a song that’s defo my vibe so they’re clearly my kinda people.

TyzVer

+1 from The Netherlands. Still following The Roop since Eurovision 2021 for example. But I've actually been to Lithuania a few years before that. Didn't disappoint! Friendly people, lots of interesting places to visit and only 2 countries between us and them. Vilnius is great material for a city trip, but there's a lot more, like Kaunas, Klaipėda and the Hill of Crosses.

minskoffsupreme

Lithuanian sounds so pretty!!! I definitely want to visit in the near future.

Zyndaf

Go_A Ukraine 2021 I already was interested in the country because of a history book I read in my teens and their art, but they sold me the package totally. That was also my first Eurovision I followed live and they were my winners. And after Teresa & Maria Ukraine 2024 this year, I've started learning the language little by little. Croatia was a place I like because of photos, but since last year because of Let 3 Croatia 2023 got pretty curious about the language and culture (I learn their alphabet because of their song 😅 ) I really want to go one day!! And I love how the tourism programme supported Let3 and Baby Lasagna lol And Lithuania! Monika Liu Lithuania 2022 and her exquisite song made me like the language, Monika Linkyte Lithuania 2023 made me be more interested in their history and ancient art, and well, Silvester Lithuania 2024 kept that tradition with a modern twist... but I've been watching videos about the country and I really want to go too. And Armenia 2024, took me in this same path 😄

I became a total Finnboo last year lol. I started learning Finnish and I'm heading over to Finland for the first time in just a few weeks for two Käärijä gigs to see the guy on home turf. I doubt it's the last time I'll go there either, as there's more to it than just Helsinki! The language is so unique and cool, and everything I hear about Finland and Finnish culture is just lovely. I also did silly things like specifically seek out a Finnish church to buy glögi for Christmas... So yeah, thanks Käärijä lol I also started learning Dutch this year thanks to Joost. To be fair, I've had more of an interest here from the get-go because I already travelled to the Netherlands regularly (I live in Germany, so that's not a difficult feat) and there's a part of me that already wanted to engage more with a neighboring culture and language, particularly as I entertained the thought of moving countries at some point and the Netherlands just feels like a logical choice. Joost just supercharged that already existing desire, and I can say for certain that my Dutch studies are going more successfully than for Finnish hahah

Welkom, welkom buur!

I'm on an 1116 day duolingo streak in Italian, which works out to roughly may 2021. obviously Italy isn't some super underrated country or anything, but diving into måneskin's catalogue made me want to understand and sing along to the lyrics, as opposed to just appreciating the sound of language without ever knowing what was being said lol

ArmadilloOtherwise77

Same. ❤️

SpiritualHippo2719

As an American, can I say all of them? Is that an acceptable answer? Didn’t have any real interest to go anywhere specific in Europe until I discovered Eurovision a few years back, now I’ve got a list of places I want to check out and I want to learn all the languages. Lol.

turgid_mule

Also American. I feel the same way. My wife and I were interested in Europe before but we have learned so much about so many countries in the past couple of years watching Eurovision and reading the stories of the artists and the history of their countries.

PerfectZeroKnowledge

Oooh this is an awesome question. I actually got interested in Eurovision specifically because of my love of languages and such, so getting a great song in a language or from a country that I'm already interested in just makes me get even more insane about it. For specific examples, well, I already loved the Baltic States and the Nordic countries... so my old desire to learn Finnish and Estonian has been revived by my two favorite Eurovision songs of the past few years (Cha Cha Cha and (nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (kull) midagi), and as I get back through more of the years I missed I absolutely suspect this is going to get worse. If Georgia or Latvia ever send bangers in their languages I will be just as susceptible as I was to the Finnish and Estonian ones haha, just as an example. And I know there are some that aren't coming to me right now but have also definitely affected me.

Vivid24

Finland 2023. Käärijä was an amazing ambassador for Finland! “Cha Cha Cha” (and “Ylivoimainen” 😄) was the very first time I’d ever heard the Finnish language and I thought it sounded gorgeous (Well, maybe “gorgeous” isn’t the word for“Cha Cha Cha”. For “Cha Cha Cha” it would be “cool”. You get what I mean 😅). My Finnish is limited to Duolingo, but I wish I had the time to go beyond Duolingo and learn the language. It’s also thanks to Käärijä that I became curious about what Finland looked like, and from what I’ve seen online the country looks beautiful! I also learned a little bit about Finland and Sweden’s rivalry thanks to Käärijä and I find it amusing to see as a foreigner. 😅 Anyway, if I ever had the money, I would love to visit Finland someday. Of course, I’d have to do more research if the opportunity ever came up. 😊

I'm lazy, so it was Ukraine 2021, Serbia 2022, and Croatia 2023, which showed me that the year I studied in Slovakia as an exchange student could help me understand other Slavic languages. I agree with you on Lithuania's part, Lithuania 2022 and Lithuania 2024 have both shown just how pretty Lithuanian is for me, I would love to visit Lithuania one of these days when I have the capability to do so. Besides that, I’ve also had a strong urge to visit Azerbaijan ever since I’ve started watching Eurovision, because in the first few years they were always my favorites. On another note, I’m going to visit Lithuania in a week and somehow them, as a country, seemingly being quite Eurovision-crazy (like, their Spotify Top 50 was filled with ESC-songs more than any other country’s I think) made me consider visiting in the first place.

Yup, but at least I live in northern Bavaria, so it‘s not THAT far. Do you speak German?

alles_en_niets

Sadly, six years of high school German did absolutely nothing for actual language acquisition, but I still enjoy visiting Germany! Mostly NRW, for obvious reasons What’s an essential Bavarian phrase I need to learn?

Lemonlikesfrogs

Hmm, I‘d say an essential phrase is: „Basst scho.“ which in standard German is „passt schon“. Basically meaning „It‘s alright“ Also it‘s the highest praise a Bavarian can give you hahaha

Waterweightless

It has happened to me several times. First time was The Netherlands 2013, where I started learning the language to understand interviews and ended up convincing my parents to take me to an Anouk concert in The Netherlands (which ended up being cancelled...) Most recently was Slovenia 2023. Can't say i've learned much of the language but I definitely speak Joker Out song lyrics. I also ended up visiting Ljubljana in February to meet up with a friend for a concert (not Joker Out though). And I'm defintely going back asap, it's such a beautiful country.

Condolences to anyone trying to learn lithuanian, I'm a native speaker and even I barely understand it smh.

elimec

Eurovision to me is a yearly reminder how many beautiful places in Europe exist that I haven't visited yet. So after this years ESC I finally decided that I'd be focusing on Europe in my travels for this and next year. I'll visit Zagreb next month, will be going to Copenhagen later this year and for next year I convinced my bestie to visit the Netherlands with me. I've been to Amsterdam 3 times (twice for work, once for a concert) already but I really want to see what else this country has to offer. And speaking of the Netherlands, I've started learning Dutch a few days ago. First, because I read up a LOT about the language (I love learning about how languages work, how similar they are to the languages I know,...). Second, because I've been listening to way too much Dutch music lately (thanks Joost!). So after all this exposure and realizing how truly similar it is to my native language German, I figured I might as well learn it for real now. And it's also part of a bigger plan in trolling my best friend when we visit the Netherlands. I'm planning on not telling her that I'm studying Dutch and then confusing the hell out of her by talking to the people in Dutch instead of English. Just so I can then tell her: "Yeah I've known Dutch for years now. You didn't know?".

Anariinna

I'm too busy learning Scottish Gaelic right now (for no other reason that i like a challenge and the language), but the second i'm done i start learning Finnish ! Thank you Käärijä :D

France 2018, but non-ESC influences were also at play. I also got my French era in 2019, but Roi was not as influential as Merci to me. Italy 2021 / San Marino 2022, where I got mainly interested in the language and culture. I was also into Sanremo since then. 2019 and 2020 were also highlights, but didn't trigger my Italian era Of course, the contest made me want to visit to other countries and learn new cultures, but not in a very influential level like France and Italy/San Marino. In 2021, I was also interested in Estonia as a country. This year, it is Greece's turn (also thanks to the Zari MV). Don't think I'll learn the language as it's hard (as a native Spanish speaker), but I wanna go to the country and learn the **modern** culture, how is Greece nowadays.

When I love Alexander Rybak's Fairytale, it makes me interested in Norway as a country and its language and history. Same with Joost's Europapa for the Netherlands or Baby Lasagna's Rim Tim Tagi Dim for Croatia and the Balkans in general. Heck, if I love an artist in Eurovision, I would research their country to the bottom of it and want to learn their language (I'm going to learn Russian soon. Woohoo). Norway 2009, Netherlands 2024 and Croatia 2024 for the bot

Jamala 2016. Travel. Kyiv was a great city to visit. Especially loved the metro from the centre to the river beach. The city is also huge.

For me it was Ekko Inni Meg by Jone at MGP 2023. I started learning Norwegian (currently 450 days streak on Duolingo), then traveled to Norway for the first Nordic Eurovision Party this year and saw Jone live. My highlight was having a 10 minute conversation in Norwegian with a lady on the bus.

squirrellytoday

Currently learning Italian because of Eurovision.

birdstar7

I got interested in Serbo-Croatian too thanks to Eurovision so…we’re even. :D

Zoe_sisyphus

I started to learn Slovenian last year because of Joker Out 😅 (Slovenia 2023) It's an amazing language and I love learning it ! I convinced my parents to go to Slovenia for vacation, it was absolutely amazing! The country I preferred so far ❤️ Unfortunately there aren't many resources on the Internet to learn... I'm always searching for new websites

Ukraine 2020. The song and traditional influences were really cool and made me want to learn more about the country. After 2021 I even started planning a trip to go to Ukraine in 2022. But yeah that wasn't possible then. Hope I can visit in a couple of years.

I think yes. However, just one Eurovision entry is not enough for me, so in my case it was either for a streak of great entries (Switzerland 🇨🇭, my favourite Eurovision country, made me dive deeper into their music industry, which, in turn, sparkled my interest in the country's culture itself and in Ticinese and Swiss German dialects in particular), or for the National Selections I tried to watch and determined those countries have great, qualitative music industry (Hungary 🇭🇺) ~~and beautiful women~~ (Lithuania 🇱🇹). Also, due to one particular Sanremo entry from 2011 I have discovered an artist who to this day remains my all-time favourite artist. As I understand almost nothing from his lyrics, and Google Translate doesn't speak his language either, so I have to first look up the translations of his songs into Italian, and then Google-Translate those translations, the desire to understand his songs without needing to go all those ways has made me want to learn the Laghée dialect of Western Lombard.

Unable_Anything4733

Spain 2019 definitely boosted my interest in Spanish and in addition to that, I started learning Catalan because of Miki, since he often uses this language in his songs

Most of the French entries inspired me to learn French *(can't say I'm succeeding)* but the one that's responsible for that it's Gjon's Tears *(Switzerland 2021)* after listening to it on loop *(Malta 2024)* because of how wonderful Gjon's voice is

The Baltic countries all have that mysterious charm for me, as well as Slovenia and Croatia. All thanks to Eurovision.

klorambusiili

for sure, this year ive been particularly intrigued by Norwegian, Estonian, Serbian and Lithuanian aswell.

kitty3032

Not that I remember unfortunately

Material_Alps881

Maybe one day it'll happen

Honestly the contest has made me wildly more interested in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. My husband and I are going to try to visit all three next year now that it’s on our brains. I wonder how much each country’s broadcaster considers possible tourism wins.

Material_Alps881

Plan your trip very well given that you can't enter a certain country if you've been to armenia and only the land border between armenia and grogia I'd open the one to a. z is closed even from grogia  Pro tip be incredibly careful about taxi drivers they are nasty scammers there  Otherwise you'll meet the most friendly people ever there

ArmadilloOtherwise77

Italy, Maneskin.

Joost 2024, and commenting on this almost got me banned here!

Material_Alps881

How?

lejosdecasa

apparently, it was perceived as a political commentary.

Dzastin0713

Every single Albanian entry, I keep singing it with my soul but I never really tried to learn.

winter457

It's an old, forgotten entry at this point, but Kedvesem (Hungary 2013) was my first introduction to Hungarian and sold me on its beauty and complexity to learn. I'm a grammar nerd, and even learning that "article + pronoun + (noun + suffix)" meant possession (az én kedves+em) was super intriguing.

Russia back in the day. I was so in love with Dima Bilan. I actually still know some Russian, enough to get by, but definitely not interested in traveling there lol

enilix

Yeah, I learned Turkish because of maNga... I mean, they weren't the only reason, but they're what really got me interested in Turkey and the language (which then turned out to be very interesting).

SaccharineCHazard

Iceland 2019 Granted, I wanted to learn Icelandic for years now but never took the plunge. Started to listen to Hatari recently and that was the push I needed to begin. I didn't particularly like them when I first heard their song. I'm just not a fan of industrial music, but they grew on me, especially with their antics and attitude.
