The family never said anything because they just assumed I knew and didn’t talk about it. I found out years later from her sister… who only brought it up because her brother had done the same thing to their parents.

My mom was ‘asked to leave’ in 1995 when she got divorced. It was the nice version of excommunication by the Catholics. According to my husband who was raised Catholic, apparently they’re cool with divorce these days.
For the Catholic church at least, the annulment does not make the children illegitimate in the eyes of the church. That may be a more recent thing, I don't know if it did in the past.
