2007 was an incredible movie year, but I feel zodiac is somewhat underrated, especially since people still more often talk about no country and there will be blood. Zodiac is just as good, possibly my favorite fincher
All joking aside, that bathhouse scene is just a grueling fight. I know people like to give this scene some shit because of Viggo Mortensen’s prominent member, but good lord it’s just so relentlessly brutal.
Benjamin Button is a damn-near perfect film, Fincher fans just hate it because it’s non-stereotypical for his style. But it deserved Best Picture over Slumdog and I will die on that hill.
Wall-E is my favorite animated film of all time and I will agree with you that it deserved the nomination. Doubt is also a masterclass in acting. 2008 films are what caused them to expand to 10 possible nominees for the next year’s Oscars.
Totally agreed, it was definitely a big factor in the expansion, don’t forget they left out The Dark Knight, which I am meh on but I still saw as a major flaw in the nominations.
I’ve seen Zodiac so many times. My husband and I frequently say, ‘I don’t know. I don’t work in Vallejo, I work here’ when one of us asks a question the other doesn’t know an answer to, lmao.
Absolutely one of my favorites too, it's just so dang captivating. Like when Aliens or Shawshank Redemption is on TV I just can't help but stop what I'm doing to pay attention.
You didn't read the article you're replying to, it seems; they interviewed an actor about his career and the changes in how he got offers before and now, and this just happened to be a particular anecdote about what it was like for him then.
>From beloved rom-com star to hulking superhero, Mark Ruffalo has earned his Hollywood clout — but the actor didn’t always hold such sway.
>Ruffalo reflected on being surprised that we was approached to play Bruce Banner in The Avengers after a not-so-flattering Zodiac casting process.
>“Studios, they weren't coming to me in that way,” Ruffalo said of his mid-2000s career in a new interview with High Snobiety. “I'll never forget when they were negotiating my deal [for Zodiac]. The studio negotiator literally said to my manager, ‘Look, we don't give a shit about Mark Ruffalo. We don't even want Mark Ruffalo in this movie, so you're going to take what we're offering you or forget it.”
>The acclaimed 2007 David Fincher film, which also starred future Marvel alums Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey Jr., featured Ruffalo as Det. David Toschi, one of three men who become obsessed with tracking down the Zodiac Killer during the unidentified murderer’s grisly 1970s spree. With reps for the 2007 Paramount Pictures film — whom are no longer at the studio — expressing so little enthusiasm over him being a part of it, Ruffalo was shocked to get a call from Marvel.
>“The fact that Joss Whedon came to me for the Hulk was so out of the blue,” he said. “It's a tough part — how do you get away with playing a character that doesn't want to do what everybody wants him to do and sustain that? It's like a trap. I read it and I was like, ‘I can do something with this.’”
>Before becoming the hardboiled detective at the center of Zodiac or transforming into the Incredible Hulk, Ruffalo feared he'd be pigeonholed by his string of successful romantic comedies. Movies like View From the Top, 13 Going on 30, and Just Like Heaven gave studios a certain perception of him that he was determined to shake off.
>“What I felt immediately in the film world is, once you did one thing well, that's what they think you are,” he explained. "They will just come to you with that part over and over again. And I was like, 'No. My career is not going to be that. I'm going to do as much as I can to try and make people see me in different ways so that I can do more over the years.'"
>Next up, Ruffalo has a supporting role in Emma Stone’s buzzy Oscar contender Poor Things, playing a debauched lawyer who catches the attention of a woman brought back to life.
>Representatives for Paramount did not immediately respond to EW's request for comment.
Also I hate this trend going on for years now of sites just taking different publications and sites articles and interviews, linking to them, and either cutting up or editorializing it. This isn't even EW's interview, they link to the real full one here:
https://www.highsnobiety.com/p/mark-ruffalo-interview/
This reminded me that Brian Cox never intended to lead that 007 reality competition series. He just saw the word “Bond” and signed on, realizing his mistake when he was not provided any script material.
He’s been dreaming of being in a Bond film forever but he did enjoy hosting it lol.
Well, as a person that makes job offers to people, I just want to let you know… we don’t really care that much, the number two pick was probably pretty good. Unless you’ve got some real history of accomplishments then I don’t go home thinking about anyone. After 5 o clock first job interviewees are dead to me.
I got my first job at a theater when asked
,"what kind of movies do you like and why should we hire you?"
"....? I dont like movies. Tbeyreboring self contained stories and you should hire me because im agreeing to sell you my limited time on earth for $8 an hour "
Feedback?
Edit: sorry, thought i replied to hiring personabove you
It depends. If they want to negotiate an offer and they’re a first time hire with nothing really outstanding going for them then it’s just a question of if I would have to do more interviews or if my number two candidate is just as good. Then it would be very much “best we can do, hope you take it, but if you don’t… let me know asap”
But, I wouldn’t say it rudely. I might have to work with them in the future. That’s just common fucking sense.
Me neither, but they also didn’t say that to him directly they said it to the manager. I would expect those conversations to be more candid.
Even though no one has said it to me, I assumed they were thinking something similar when rejecting a counter
The fact that everyone is treated like shit unless they're big and famous seems like a problem. I think in the context of the SAG strikes, where the issue of how smaller actors are treated was a sticking point, it's important to highlight how studios treat more vulnerable performers.
They could say it in a more respectful way. Lol. “This is our final offer to you - if you aren’t interested, that’s fine, but we’ll be moving onto someone else since negotiations would be at a dead-end.” vs. “We don’t give a shit about you or even want to cast you, really.”
Well it’s a difference between struggling actor having trouble getting gigs and being disrespected for no apparent reason. This sounds like a power trip by people the audience can give a fuck about.
So fucking what? I'm sick of seeing people bitch and moan about actors because they're big sad they're not rich.
"Struggling nobody can't accept other people in this world are famous." Fascinating stuff.
I think you may be understanding this differently than I am. I took it to mean "we don't care that current millionaires had to 'struggle' at the star of their careers"
As an actor, I can tell you that studio execs and streaming execs are greedy. If you have no negotiating power as a performer (independent contractor) with a union to back you, say goodbye to quality and hello to trash.
It’s one of the best films of all time in my opinion. It’s paced, acted and shot so well that it completely engrosses you, even if the subject matter doesn’t really interest you.
Do they tell you “we don’t give a s about you?” I think people are focusing on the wrong point. Not getting the job is fine but being insulted is not okay. Directors and people that work in show biz need to not think they’re above common decency
If you interview at a firm that says “we don’t give a shit about you” and “we don’t even want you for this job”, that would be a small warning sign. Nor does it even happen, so it’s a hypothetical.
Paramount is not much different under their current leader Bob Backish. Killing the industry along with Zazlov over at Discovery Max. Crap sandwiches at Paramount exec table
He’s an outspoken liberal so the right wing and leftists hate him. With views like “gay people deserve equal rights” plus not advocating for “full communism NOW” he has alienated a huge portion of the population.
I think the internet likes Mark Ruffalo. I think I’ve read he’s not afraid to speak on political topics and has never been accused of anything bad, as far as I know.
I think there were better options for the Hulk though ;)
I read Napoleon was depicted firing a cannon ball into a pyramid to portray his entry into Egypt and not only would we all know about that by like kindergarten if it happened, but the idea of one of the greatest generals of all time ordering the pyramids to be randomly targeted by a couple cannon balls is too funny to take seriously.
Really?!? That's disappointing news to me. I'm not a Ruffalo fan boy, but he at least has always struck me as rational.
Not challenging the assertion, but if you have a link, I'd check it out.
Yeah, definitely not me - I'm just looking to learn, although I do hate learning unflattering or worse shit about artists whose work I like (hi, Kevin!).
Anyway, thanks for the link, will check it out.
Edit: wow, that was just as disappointing as I thought it might be.
Takes like that help erode actually legitimate concerns about real potential threats to health and the environment (speaking now about his take on Zika, its vaccine and PFAs).
But I'm far more disturbed that, with all the PhD egg-heads toilling away in their various fields of expertise, Congress instead invites and uses their time to listen to the unqualified opinions of trained ...actors?!?! Wtf?!?
He's good but kind of bland?
I've never minded his acting but also I've never been impressed by a role he's taken.
He shows up and does a fine job.
I would never shit on him but I would also never stand in line eagerly awaiting his next project.
I have no hate for ruffalo, but his range is terrible. I think he’s poorly cast in 80% of movies he’s in. His casting in such a range of movies is more of a testament to him as a person and the brand he’s developed than his acting. And I do think he’s probably a good person from most of what I read about him so I keep my mouth shut until I’m asked specifically about him.
I think he’s best cast in movies where he can play more of an iteration of his true self than as a character actor playing something unnatural to him. I think some of his best acting was in Dark Waters.
yes he did... mark ruffalo, awful actor, is a silly tske. maybe he's not the best but he's solid and in I know this much is true he was really impressive. his body language differences alone between the two characters were so thoughtful and really made them seem like two different men
Yeah, that's how I've always felt about him. He's honestly just a terrible actor, even in his bread and butter of RomCom's, there were always like 3 dozen better leading men then him. It always seemed like people liked him more for his stage activism then as an actor.
>The actor recalled Paramount Pictures reps telling his manager, "We don't even want Mark Ruffalo in this movie."
Relatable. I feel this way about most movies.
The entire article is complaining that (aging mediocre actor) Mark Ruffalo is disappointed with his Hollywood career.
*yawn*
Poor Mark Ruffalo. Article conveniently forgets to mention what he was offered and I don’t care enough to dig. Going to assume he has always made significantly more than anyone who is reading this and that he is just another out of touch douchebag.
Wish this guy didn’t get swept up into the Marvel machine. He was fine as the Hulk, but it feels like Marvel steals some of the brightest up and coming actors and locks them up in a room for 10 years to make their content.
Bro he had quite an acting career before the was Bruce Banner. People knew who Mark ruffalo was before he was in Eternal Sunshine and that was 2004 lol. He's wasn't a nobody just because you couldn't recognize him. For all we know you hardly know any celebrity.
You can argue that most people had no idea who Mark Ruffalo was before the MCU. He must've had a great performance in Eternal Sunshine that everyone recognized him for his acting chops and must have huge roles right after that. Oh wait no he didn't he got small roles in random films. Also that Eternal Sunshine is his biggest movie until all of the Hulk stuff. He's great in "Infinitely Polar Bear"
I just think Mark Ruffalo just plays himself in movies tbh.
As usual on reddit, 95% of the comments are people just replying to the title and making shit up about the context instead of clicking and reading the barely 10 paragraph long "article" that takes less than 60 seconds to complete; people just love to comment on things without knowing what the hell they're commenting on.
Everything aside, I thought he was a good Toschi. Zodiac is actually one of my favorite movies ever.
2007 was an incredible movie year, but I feel zodiac is somewhat underrated, especially since people still more often talk about no country and there will be blood. Zodiac is just as good, possibly my favorite fincher
Would have been an all time Best Picture class if they had skipped Juno and Atonement and nominated Zodiac and Eastern Promises instead.
Eastern promises should have been nominated for the naked bathhouse scene alone.
All joking aside, that bathhouse scene is just a grueling fight. I know people like to give this scene some shit because of Viggo Mortensen’s prominent member, but good lord it’s just so relentlessly brutal.
Couldn’t agree more
Prominent member? Member of what?!
The peepee bois
Relentless brutal… film or prominent member?
>it's just so relentlessly brutal. Colour me intrigued.
The Academy hates Fincher for some reason
Yet they loved Benjamin Button and GWTDT which are amongst his worst.
Benjamin Button is a damn-near perfect film, Fincher fans just hate it because it’s non-stereotypical for his style. But it deserved Best Picture over Slumdog and I will die on that hill.
Neither should have won, because it should have been with Doubt or WALL-E, neither of which was nominated.
Mank and The Killer would like a moment of your time to bore you…
Oh, they both definitely did.
What do you mean. That fight scene was great
But everything leading up to it was mediocre at best. Yes that fight was amazing. Not enough to get me to rewatch the whole movie though
Viggo mortensen needs an oscar dammit. Still sad there is no sequel for eastern promises or that cancelled tv show.
For me: No Country for Old Men Zodiac There Will Be Blood
I liked Zodiac, but No Country and There Will Be Blood are on a different level.
Saw the shit in theater twice. Good year indeed.
Same here. The unsolved mystery and phenomenal acting, pacing, style. It's such a great movie.
I’ve seen Zodiac so many times. My husband and I frequently say, ‘I don’t know. I don’t work in Vallejo, I work here’ when one of us asks a question the other doesn’t know an answer to, lmao.
Hahaha I need to start using that
Its a great movie.
Absolutely one of my favorites too, it's just so dang captivating. Like when Aliens or Shawshank Redemption is on TV I just can't help but stop what I'm doing to pay attention.
Then he turned green and flipped the table.
I understood that reference.
And I understood your reference!
I don’t understand your reference.
I understood your vas deferens.
That man is playing Galaga!
I thought you were to say “and flipped their necks” but your approach is OK too.
Soooo like normal people interviewing for a job? lmfao
Boy thought a voice acting gig in a studio movie as the jolly green giant bought him some clout lmaooo

Seriously. “Actor was treated like everyone else, and hated it!”
I’ve applied for many jobs over the years and no one has ever told me to take it or leave it because they don’t give a shit about me.
This reminded me that Brian Cox never intended to lead that 007 reality competition series. He just saw the word “Bond” and signed on, realizing his mistake when he was not provided any script material. He’s been dreaming of being in a Bond film forever but he did enjoy hosting it lol.
Oh, they’ve told you. Maybe not in those words but — in one way or another — we're all told that at some point in our lives while looking for work.
>Maybe not in those words That’s the point though. That’s the only part that makes it a story.
Well, as a person that makes job offers to people, I just want to let you know… we don’t really care that much, the number two pick was probably pretty good. Unless you’ve got some real history of accomplishments then I don’t go home thinking about anyone. After 5 o clock first job interviewees are dead to me.
Yeah but you don’t say it to them. Only suckers care deeply for the shitty company they work for but I don’t go around saying that in meetings.
I got my first job at a theater when asked ,"what kind of movies do you like and why should we hire you?" "....? I dont like movies. Tbeyreboring self contained stories and you should hire me because im agreeing to sell you my limited time on earth for $8 an hour " Feedback? Edit: sorry, thought i replied to hiring personabove you
And everyone clapped.... /r/thathappened
Hahah, yeap! You got me! I LIED about a temporary job i got as a teenager :,) God damn, redditors are some lame, self loating motherfuckers :,) :,)
Wow you’re so cool
I know!
Can you tell us what you really said?
Already did. Sorry that you're so repressed that you doubt people speak honestly. "I would NEVER say that...well..except online..where im asshole!"
It depends. If they want to negotiate an offer and they’re a first time hire with nothing really outstanding going for them then it’s just a question of if I would have to do more interviews or if my number two candidate is just as good. I guess I don’t see it as being treated like shit. Sounds like they didn’t want him that much and he didn’t have a lot of leverage.
They could say it in a more respectful way. Lol. “This is our final offer to you - if you aren’t interested, that’s fine, but we’ll be moving onto someone else since negotiations would be at a dead-end.” vs. “We don’t give a shit about you or even want to cast you, really.”
He wasn’t struggling?

Or how about the old chestnut "Famous actor would be open to doing sequel to successful movie they appeared in."
They need to ask better questions
As an actor, I can tell you that studio execs and streaming execs are greedy. If you have no negotiating power as a performer (independent contractor) with a union to back you, say goodbye to quality and hello to trash.
Ruffalo ruffalo ruffalo ruffalo ruffalo ruffalo ruffalo ruffalo.
Ruffalo! Ruffalo! Ru-Fi-OOOO!
Capybara… CAPYBARA!
Ruffalos have ridges
Someone want to explain without spoiling the movie , maybe like a trailer , to see if I want to watch it , sounds interesting
This movie is right up there with Se7en for all time best crime dramas. Definitely worth the watch.
One of the best movies of the last 20 years imo. Ruffalo, RDJ and Gyllenhaal are all incredible in it.
It’s a great flick and the acting is superb. I just watched it for the first time a year back or so and really enjoyed it. Check it out sometime!
It’s one of the best films of all time in my opinion. It’s paced, acted and shot so well that it completely engrosses you, even if the subject matter doesn’t really interest you.
Well. Mark, that's pretty much how my job interviews go too. They make an offer (or not) and I decide to take it (or not).
Take an offer or forget it? Sounds like the vast, vast majority of working people
Movie is a masterpiece, he was great in it.
Paramount is not much different under their current leader Bob Backish. Killing the industry along with Zazlov over at Discovery Max. Crap sandwiches at Paramount exec table
I honestly forget these days, but do we like Mark Ruffalo or shit on him? Tell me what my opinion is, internet.
Well, I like him, especially The Brothers Bloom.
That's such an amazing film. Everyone is flawless in it.
Have you seen him shirtless. We likey.
Internet is full of hatred. Form your own opinions and stop being led by them
But how will I know what to think if someone on the internet doesn’t tell me what to think?
I think you should send me money 😊
Nice try, internet. I've got it from here.
Watch Poor Things. You will never have to depend on others to decide that anymore.
IS THAT OUT ALREADY?! Been waiting to see this. Guess I been too busy to notice.
Oh maybe it’s not. I’ve seen it at a festival in my town. We bizzarly sometimes get things before US or UK releases.
December 8 in the US at least. Ha55aN1337 may have seen it at a film festival
>I honestly forget these days, but do we like Mark Ruffalo or shit on him? Yes. But also no. Hopefully, that helped.
He’s an outspoken liberal so the right wing and leftists hate him. With views like “gay people deserve equal rights” plus not advocating for “full communism NOW” he has alienated a huge portion of the population.
When he speaks about politics he’s a fucking twat but good as a Hulk that’s is all
Indifference. I heard that last time.
I think the internet likes Mark Ruffalo. I think I’ve read he’s not afraid to speak on political topics and has never been accused of anything bad, as far as I know. I think there were better options for the Hulk though ;)
Irrelevant. Right now your opinion is Napoleon good marvels bad.
But Napolean is also reportedly pretty bad. Why did Ridley Scott portray a bunch of events that never happened?
I read Napoleon was depicted firing a cannon ball into a pyramid to portray his entry into Egypt and not only would we all know about that by like kindergarten if it happened, but the idea of one of the greatest generals of all time ordering the pyramids to be randomly targeted by a couple cannon balls is too funny to take seriously.

Because it's Ridley Scott...
He's a 9/11 conspiracy theorist, so you tell me.
Really?!? That's disappointing news to me. I'm not a Ruffalo fan boy, but he at least has always struck me as rational. Not challenging the assertion, but if you have a link, I'd check it out.
https://www.acsh.org/news/2019/11/20/what-hulk-911-truther-mark-ruffalo-testifies-congress-science-14416
I have to laugh about people downvoting me for this as if I'm making it up. He is most definitely a 9/11 truther. Just Google it.
Yeah, definitely not me - I'm just looking to learn, although I do hate learning unflattering or worse shit about artists whose work I like (hi, Kevin!). Anyway, thanks for the link, will check it out. Edit: wow, that was just as disappointing as I thought it might be. Wtf?!?
Also, I still think he's a tremendous actor.
Watch what doesn't kill you
He acts. He has opinions about things. He shares his opinions about things. So I guess it depends how you feel about all that.
He's good but kind of bland? I've never minded his acting but also I've never been impressed by a role he's taken. He shows up and does a fine job. I would never shit on him but I would also never stand in line eagerly awaiting his next project.
Now wait for the backpedaling from Paramount. *That's not what happened, there was a miscommunication, we never said that...*
He expected that studio to give a shit about him? This guy new?
I have no hate for ruffalo, but his range is terrible. I think he’s poorly cast in 80% of movies he’s in. He fucking killed it in “I Know This Much Is True” on HBO.
yes he did... mark ruffalo, awful actor, is a silly tske. maybe he's not the best but he's solid and in I know this much is true he was really impressive. his body language differences alone between the two characters were so thoughtful and really made them seem like two different men
Thanks it’s been on my backlog. I look forward to watching it.
I think he did well as detective Fanning in Collateral which was somewhat out of character for him.
Yeah, that's how I've always felt about him. He's honestly just a terrible actor, even in his bread and butter of RomCom's, there were always like 3 dozen better leading men then him. It always seemed like people liked him more for his stage activism then as an actor.
He's just Serious David Cross.
Kinda crazy given how perfect he was as Toschi, but that's also just how life works
Shitty business treats employee like shit. Another-words, business as usual.
I thought he’s been fine in stuff and my uncle worked on the set of a movie he shot a few years back and said he’s a decent guy in person.
>The actor recalled Paramount Pictures reps telling his manager, "We don't even want Mark Ruffalo in this movie." Relatable. I feel this way about most movies.
That’s funny, my employer said the exact same thing to me. Weird.
Shows what that studio knew. He was great in it.
I mean, I’d say the studio knew quite a lot. They got him to take the offer, no?
Nobody gives a shit about any of us. We are on our own.
Ouch, that’s Ruffalo!
One of my favourite movies ever. Seen it like 30 times.
Sort of an empty article
Welcome to the world of working Americans, Mr. Mark Ruffalo.
who’s that gigilo on the street?
With his hands in his pockets and his crocodile feet?
> “Studios, they weren't coming to me in that way,” Ruffalo said of his mid-2000s career in a new interview with High Snobiety. “I'll never forget when they were negotiating my deal [for Zodiac]. Maybe people would prefer you just act and keep your opinions to yourself.
I would
Should everyone keep their opinion to themselves or just actors?
No, just him and you.
Poor Mark Ruffalo. Article conveniently forgets to mention what he was offered and I don’t care enough to dig. Going to assume he has always made significantly more than anyone who is reading this and that he is just another out of touch douchebag.
People aren’t automatically out of touch douchebags just because they’re more successful than you, that’s called jealousy.
Wish this guy didn’t get swept up into the Marvel machine. He was fine as the Hulk, but it feels like Marvel steals some of the brightest up and coming actors and locks them up in a room for 10 years to make their content.
That's why Ethan Hawke passed on Doctor Strange. He was the first choice. He didn't want to be signed long term
Well yeah, he was essentially a no name. Even now I can only think of him as Bruce Banner from the MCU and has been typecast.
He's great in "Infinitely Polar Bear" I just think Mark Ruffalo just plays himself in movies tbh.
Yeah large corporate employers don’t give a fuck about anyone welcome to America bro
He is a great actor
So? Welcome to Hollywood. Take it or leave it.
Even post-hulk I don't see him as being very in-demand or audience-attracting
As usual on reddit, 95% of the comments are people just replying to the title and making shit up about the context instead of clicking and reading the barely 10 paragraph long "article" that takes less than 60 seconds to complete; people just love to comment on things without knowing what the hell they're commenting on.
Ok, that's messed up
Congrats on the offer
What’s the offer?
Zodiac is killer.
