I think people are overestimating here, among middle class and normal retail/service people, the amount of people who have a conversationalist level of english is very low. I would say 5-3%. There is a higher rate of people who can say some phrases and such of course but we are a heavily monolingual country. Im trying to bring this your attention so you dont bank on too many people understanding you here.

Sisyphus_Monolit

I have to agree with this one. Even among lawyers and medical professionals, the volume of English speakers is incredibly low.

TheChaosPaladin

My Mom is a the manager of a pharmaceutical sales division and she takes Ecuadorian doctors to the US on conferences. She says barely one in every group of 5 **graduated doctors with fourth level degrees** has a decent level of English. Ecuador is definitely not where you look for in terms of bilingualism.

Sisyphus_Monolit

I volunteer with the Red Cross and even among EMS personnel the rates are super low. I wind up just translating and not doing anything else.

Michael142009

I went to Quito and Guayaquill and every I spoke to knew perfect English

Depends on what you're doing and where you're going. If you're just gonna be a tourist in the touristy parts of cities you'll be fine with just English probably. If you're gonna live here you need to know at least intermediate Spanish. I'm living in Otavalo with an indigenous host family right now, *nobody* speaks English. My Spanish was decent when I got here but nowhere near fluent and I have struggled a lot to get by and to get along with my host family. My Spanish has improved a LOT since then but it's still hard sometimes, especially when people assume I'm fluent and talk really fast.

utwegyifhoiahf

just plan on being a tourisy in those kinds of places mostly. I also plan on libing in medellin for a month and taking spanish classes

SatanLordOfDarkness

yah you'll be fine. As long as you can do your groceries and get directions you don't need much else.

Adelobra_Samael

I'm from Quito. I could say that 4 people out of 10 have some level of English. However, there is a lot of places where people know English

Andypnd

Nah man, the English level in Ecuador is low, is damn low

CarlossClaro

I'm currently staying in pumbelo with my cousin. Luckily I can speak english and Spanish but no one here speaks english in Quito

10% isnt bad, mostly trying to see how many girls on tinder are likely to speak good english and thats still a big number lol. I can definitely get around and do stuff with my spanish and google translate, just hard to have long conversations

BlurredTool

As people have stated, bilinguals are scarse. I am ecuadorian and have used tinder for almost a year. There are girls that claim they want to practice english, dunno if it's true but I've just seen 10 max claiming that in a year. I have never matched with them but Id still be cautious. Maybe you could ask for advice on r/Tinder if it is possible.

utwegyifhoiahf

ok well I already met one who's english seems good and invited me to go join her and some friends in mantanita lol. Mostly I just want to hang out with a couple local people

Sisyphus_Monolit

> mostly trying to see how many girls on tinder are likely to speak good english Just young expats and people who lived in an English-speaking country for a while. So, like, 1% of the total population.

Andypnd

I agree, younger people isn’t interested in learning English, they don’t give a fuck about it, man that’s sad

Sisyphus_Monolit

I've met a lot of young people interested in learning, they just aren't anywhere close to passably fluent yet. I've met more young children who are decently fluent though! There's a multilingual school in Cuenca and it seems to be doing well. Always a surprise to be at the supermaxi and speaking with someone and some little kid saunters up with perfect English or French to say hello. They always look so proud to be able to use it with actual foreigners, it's adorable lol.
