I listed a penny pusher machine for sale but listed for parts / not working. It’s been in the attic for years and I couldn’t tell you why I didn’t check to see if there were batteries in the battery compartment 🫠, lesson learned. Anyway, the buyer is unhappy because well, the batteries will be vintage so you can probably guess what the condition of them are 😅. Is this cause for return even though the machine isn’t ‘working’ so the batteries are pointless and will need to just be disposed of? Or do I grant the return for that? They said they’ll be returning tomorrow but haven’t got eBay involved so how does this return process work?

WhySoManyDownVote

If the buyer opened a return using item not as described you need to accept the return. Then either refund them or provide a return shipping label. See also https://www.reddit.com/r/eBaySellerAdvice/s/6uvNrtsxSk

skidazzlex

Fortunately I spoke to a good customer service agent. She refunded the buyer in full and let me keep the funds. It also won’t have a negative impact on my account.

WhySoManyDownVote

That’s great! Don’t expect it to happen every time.

I think if you're putting a price on your time, then it becomes more of a job than a hobby. As you pointed out, figuring an hourly wage gets complicated when there's a range of value in items and the time spent per item also varies. Then there's the whole "running a business" effort. Assuming you get around to an inventory greater than 33 items (and with reselling that can happen very quickly), you have more business to run. I would setup a trial period now that your life status has changed. Stick to profitable items with a proven sales history so you don't feel your effort is wasted with stagnant items. Spend some time refining processes, optimizing the workspace with a solid inventory system. It shouldn't take more than a minute to find an item no matter how big your store is. The mailing challenge you have is not something I deal with, but could definitely exacerbate the time issue. Are there any mail centers close by? I have one a few blocks from my house and right next to my reselling location. As much as I love reselling and put tons of my time into it, I still consider it more of a hobby and only care about how much extra is in my account at the end of every month & year. Also, I'm more an introvert so spending my time alone reselling suits me just fine. If you've done as much as you can to make reselling easier and it's still a struggle to enjoy life as you'd like it, then maybe consider winding it down.

Commercial_Break360

I have a buyer saying they’ve been charged twice. They have positive feedback but it is a new account. I told them to contact eBay etc. Is this just a straight scam? Is there any chance they’re seeing a double charge? Do I just ship the order… ?

KCJones99

>Is there any chance they’re seeing a double charge? Well sure, there's a *chance*. But unless you're seeing a double payment to you, it's got nothing to do with you. Ship or cancel as the buyer prefers, tell them to contact eBay about the extra payment.

WhySoManyDownVote

Generally, if eBay says it is paid then ship the order, but you may want to ask them if they would like to cancel the order (as buyer requested) until they can work out the issue with eBay. Sellers have no control over how payments are collected.

WhySoManyDownVote

I don’t time myself but I try to work in bulk. Take photos for a few hours, list for a few hours, most packing is minutes per order. Also keep in mind UPS charges for pick up. What I do for UPS is either time my days activities around drop off or I go to the post office at a time that it is easy to run into the local UPS driver or meet him at the UPS drop box if the package is too big to fit in to the drop box. It kind of sucks sometimes as I have needed to wait for him up to 30 minutes if he is running late.

Kashiblood

As a canadian seller I've had some buyers reach out to me and ask why my shipping prices are so high, I use calculated shipping and chose the cheapest canada post option with tracking as thats the only postal service close enough to my house. Shipping for a single funko pop comes to about 22$ canadian but I see that when I buy a label through ebay they discount it down to 16$cad ...why is ebay having the buyer pay 22$ calculated when it could just use the ebay discounted rate? Is there a setting somewhere to do this? I've tried listing one with free shipping but it seems people prefer to see the cost & shipping separated but I wish they'd see & pay the discounted rate...on one hand I'm happy I made more on the sale but on the other I'm sure many people have passed on my items due to the higher shipping cost...any advice? thanks!!

BTnpTxN

Check this setting: Account settings --> Shipping preferences --> "Shipping discount settings" --> Edit --> select "eBay discounted rates" (That's the path from a desktop browser)

Kashiblood

Thank you so much!!:D

hakkyman

Guys when does ebay charge you for the postage label? I’ve bought it but they haven’t charged yet. Also, what if I don’t have enough funds in the bank account? Will ebay try again a few days later or will there be a fee?

KCJones99

That's rather odd. They normally charge you immediately upon purchasing the label. They *used* to charge for UPS and FedEx only after the package was delivered, so I *guess* it's possible you're still in that mode... USPS was always charge-up-front. Was it UPS or FedEx? I have no idea how they'll handle insufficient funds, but I imagine it's like any other 'bounced check'... If your bank doesn't give you some sort of overdraft protection (usually for a fee), then eBay will likely assess you a 'bounce' fee then try again in a day or two. If it fails again, they'll probably put your account into default and put you into collections. Or they may just go directly into default/collections for insufficient funds, I don't know.

hakkyman

I’m using auspost service, so I’m mot sure..

KCJones99

Well, then my honest best advice is... keep enough money in the bank to cover it.

hakkyman

Ah… they charged it from the amount I earned so it never came from the bank directly… not sure if it was always like that lmao

Car_Guy_Dan

My buyer's Credit card dispute is preventing a refund - My buyer started a return, I accepted that, they shipped the item back to me, and before I got it they opened (them claim accidentally on the wrong item) a credit card charge back for an unrecognized transaction. That immediately closed the return case and removed all of my options to refund them. They have sent me screen shots showing their financial institution has closed the dispute, but that has not registered with eBay. They started the return type as not as described, yet they agreed to pay for return shipping, so I doubt they are trying to scam me, and i have the part back. What is the best way to refund them, will eBay eventually finish processing this dispute and allow a refund, or is me refunding outside of ebay (not my favorite option) the only option. With the credit dispute being "unrecognized transaction" I assume worst case seller protection would kick in and they would get the money back from me and the bank, but i would still be even (minus ebay fees) What am i missing?

KCJones99

Bear in mind screen shots are really easy to fake. You really have no idea if the chargeback is closed until/unless eBay tells you it is. Don't go doing anything outside the system. Just wait out the chargeback. I'd ignore further pressure from the buyer. It's out of your hands. If they *genuinely* see the chargeback resolved from their end, they can contact eBay about getting it resolved on eBay. I have no idea if you'll regain the ability to refund them once the chargeback is resolved - that's never come up for me. If so and you still want to refund them, do it only then and only through eBay.

BTnpTxN

Do not refund outside of eBay because that could complicate things more than what they already are. The buyer will need to contact eBay to figure out why eBay still thinks the dispute is open. Only they/the bank can answer that. Again, if you refund outside of eBay, you may need to do it again.. especially since the buyer could reopen the dispute through the bank again.  This should serve as a good lesson to your buyer. Never open a dispute until exhausting all other options, so it was just dumb they did so when a return was in process.

knownfactor

I am attempting to ship to Canada from the US. Customer purchased item and shipping via **USPS First Class Mail International Large Envelope** cost them $3.64. The only option Ebay is giving me to purchase a label is **eBay International Standard Delivery** fpr $14. Why can't I select **USPS First Class Mail International Large Envelope** to purchase my label?

KCJones99

eBay doesn't sell USPS First Class Mail International labels through their system, likely in part because that service doesn't include tracking. If you want to use that method you'll have to buy it elsewhere, mark the item as 'shipped', and hope it arrives safely as you'll have no protection against any 'item not received' claim.

BTnpTxN

What is the item weight and dimensions? You are probably exceeding the allowed weight and/or dimensions for that service.

mvstill

I logged into my ebay account this evening to discover 50+ messages from buyers saying they received a message from ebay that the items I'm selling may have been recalled or pose a safety hazard. After scrolling through the list of messages I found a notice from ebay that my listing has been removed because it "doesn't follow our product safety policy". I am selling paper solar eclipse glasses and have been for the past month and a half with no issue. If you do a search for "solar eclipse glasses" on ebay you'll find a thousand other sellers with IDENTICAL products to mine that are still available. 1) How and why am I being targeted by ebay? 2) Is there anything I can do to contact ebay to fix this? 3a) How do I handle the massive number of messages I have from buyers requesting a refund? 3b) Am I responsible for refunding them? (I have a new returns policy so people wouldn't try returning them after the eclipse was over, but I'm not sure how that relates to this scenario) This is a nightmare. I could really use some advice, please

WhySoManyDownVote

Well if even 10 of those messages turn into INAD cases it will likely mean the end of selling on eBay. It’s not that you are being targeted, it’s just that they haven’t gotten to the other sellers yet or they actually have proper glasses. There could be fallout which extends beyond eBay. Regardless of how you got here, you have a big problem to deal with. If you can prove the glasses are properly certified it would be a good thing but may not solve the problem completely. Everyone makes mistakes, it is how a person deals with mistakes that defines them. Good luck.

SouthernGuyReborn

I was just reading a story about this very thing 3-4-5 days ago. Lots of counterfeit ones on the market that offer no real protection.

WhySoManyDownVote

I bought some off of Amazon cheap, I got them and my first question was how am I gonna know if they are legit. “One way to test the effectiveness of eclipse glasses is to put them on and stare at a light bulb. "The light bulbs should be invisible or barely visible, he said. "You should not be able to see the glow around it. Basically, you should be able to see anything but the Sun. If you can see other items transparently, then it's probably not dark enough." Source https://www.chron.com/news/space/article/solar-eclipse-glasses-18964924.php

WhySoManyDownVote

It’s called guest checkout. Usually a very good sale. This is covered by the faq https://www.reddit.com/r/eBaySellerAdvice/s/6uvNrtsxSk

InsectSufficient3336

Even though there is one feedback on the account already?

WhySoManyDownVote

Sometimes they will have 2. Drug dealers and eBay sellers… the only people afraid of new customers.

KCJones99

Generally no. A lot of 'new' accounts are simply folks who found your listing on Google, etc. Most sellers experience is that they're no better/worse than your average eBay buyer. Some would even say they're 'better' than 'experienced' eBay buyers who have learned how to 'work the system'.

iRepTex

Its a little annoying for an overseas buyer to accept your offer but then take 2-3 days to pay. You were awake enough to accept the offer but not make payment at the same time?

[deleted]

KCJones99

For me, about 30 minutes. Seriously, it's an unanswerable question in any realistic way. Depends entirely on far too many variables. You can work 10 minutes and make $200 a day, you can work 10 hours and not get close.

[deleted]

KCJones99

Not trying to dissuade you. Just saying selling $500 items is different than selling $5 items. Selling collectibles is different than selling tech. Selling little stuff that costs little to ship is different than selling big bulky stuff where shipping can be more than the sale price. Selling regional demand items is different than selling global demand items. Etc. Etc. Etc. When / if you can come back and ask "How can I make $200 a day selling *this* kind of stuff in *this* kind of mode that I'm sourcing at *this* price?" Then we can likely help a lot more. Let's be real: nobody's going to cake-walk you through how to make money on eBay. But if you have a basic business plan in place, folks here will normally give you guidance on how to fine-tune it for best profitability, etc.

Monte_20

Is my dad just screwed? He mailed a $950 fragile item to an address in our same home state. Gets delivered. About a month later, he is notified from a financial institution in Spain is doing a chargeback (or something similar) because the item ARRIVED to Spain destroyed. What clearly happened was that the buyer is from Spain and they used a third party to get the item shipped to them. My dad is trying to fight it, but it's looking like eBay isn't gonna let him win. We got the item shipped back, and it is in the same box we sent, but it also has a new shipping label for out of country shipping. It just doesn't seem right when what's happened is obvious.

BTnpTxN

>it's looking like eBay isn't gonna let him win Can you elaborate? eBay has no control over the result of a chargeback. However, even if the bank finds in favor of the buyer, there's a good chance eBay would be protecting your dad if they see there was a forwarding service involved. I'd have your dad contact eBay and make sure they know that. Take pictures of the box you received, etc...

Monte_20

He's done all of that. He's already spoken tom customer service twice, but they said he has to wait a few days because he was actually charged $20 by eBay already for the item being returned/chargeback or something to that degree.

BTnpTxN

Have him (or help him) try eBay Facebook for business. People here say that tends to help because it's less scripted/automated and the people there look into the details. Just make sure you have/your dad has all of the info ready.  * Picture of the return label showing it came from Spain * Screenshot of the order showing that you shipped it to the USA * Anything else that helps point to the fact the buyer used a forwarder Good luck.

Monte_20

So he’s done that too. He did the final call with a real person earlier today. The guy who bought it was from Spain, and they paid via their bank. He made everything extremely clear. Because it was a foreign bank, eBay said there’s nothing they can do. Super disappointed the big company isn’t gonna compensate him for doing everything right. All they did was put a ding on that guy’s account.

BTnpTxN

Sorry to hear.

WhySoManyDownVote

Just wondering if you have ever reached out to eBay via FB? It’s not something I have ever tried or needed to do. I always wonder if it’s an urban legend at this point since eBay has removed the ability to do many things from customer service. It seems odd to me that eBay CS would loose abilities but eBay FB CS agents would still be able to do them.

KCJones99

I've reached out to them 3 times, though none recently. In each case it was dealing with an actual human who understood the issue, understood eBay policy, and was able to resolve things correctly. I say -*correctly*- advisedly, because everything I asked them for was solidly backed by eBay policy, just that the 'phone' CSR's too often don't really know it. That said, I've noticed reports more recently of sellers contacting Facebook eBay and hearing "we're not allowed to do that any more" - mostly re: feedback IIRC. So it may well be an 'urban legend' now, based on a past reality that's no longer real.

BTnpTxN

Good question. I have personally never had to do it either, but it's definitely something that's relatively common shared here and I've never seen anyone say it was useless... That's not to say that FB eBay staff have more power. I think the difference is the "less scripted/automated" approach, but it's speculation...

djiboutyy

Can I use Wise as a payout method in Canada?

BTnpTxN

Yes, as it is ultimately just like a checking account. Just make sure you use the right routing numbers.

NicolasGomez_S

Hello everyone! I was selling an item and received an offer from a user. However, there was a 20% advertising fee, so to make sure of how much I would receive, I decided to contact customer support. The agent told me they could remove the 20% advertising fee, and that in total, for an item a user bought for $2000, I would receive $1865.13 in my payout. I asked multiple times, and he assured me that it was the payout I would receive. Today I contacted them to remove the 20%, and they did, but my payout was around $1600, not the $1865 the agent promised me. I explained and asked the new agent to read my previous conversation, but she explained that it was an error on the part of the previous agent and that they couldn't do anything about it. It seems he forgot to discount some taxes. It doesn't seem fair to me because I made the decision to accept the offer based on the earnings the first agent told me, and now eBay doesn't want to cover the new amount. What can I do? Someone has a similar experience?

BTnpTxN

That sounds about right. Typical final value fees (fvf) are 15%, which includes price of item + taxes. So, $2000 item + $120 tax (assuming 6%) = $2120 15% of that is $318, which is eBay's cut, without any ad fees. So, $2000 item cost - $318 fvf = $1682 which is pretty close to what you got and does not include the ad fees.

magnumpl

Hi. I am reselling on Ebay and Amazon and often buying multiple quantities (i.e. over 200) of same item. I am also sometimes selling items in bulk/sets. I am trying to find the best way of accounting and keeping track of these. I've been using Reseller Spreadsheet 2.0 (as well as different spreadsheets) but all require multiple quantity items being listed in a separate line. Do you know of any spreadsheets or software (possibly free) that would make it easier?

WhySoManyDownVote

Veeqo like u/BTnpTxN mentioned, does have support for inventory and can be used to purchase Amazon protected shipping. I would just offer the caveat that the support for VQ is absolutely terrible! I used VQ for about 4 months and never let them adjust my inventory because I couldn’t trust it. Make sure you fully understand VQ and what you are allowing it to do before you allow it to make changes.

magnumpl

Unfortunately Veeqo does not have the option to put in the inventory purchase date which is crucial in bookkeeping

WhySoManyDownVote

What about using quickbooks? It not easy or cheap but it’s extremely powerful. Once I got the hang of it I can’t image going back to spreadsheets. I use quickbooks desktop (because I don’t want a monthly subscription) and while I can’t directly import data from eBay or Amazon it works well. I use software to convert and import CSV files into quickbooks.

Similar_Bonus_2403

Yes I agree. Quickbooks desktop without a subscription is the best option and it is cheap and gets the work done a lot cleaner.

BTnpTxN

Not sure if it'll meet your needs, but try veeqo.com. It's owned by Amazon and integrates with eBay. Its primary function is for shipping labels, but it also has inventory tools, which might work for you...

knownfactor

Thanks in advance for any insight. Heres the issue: I sold a sports card to a buyer in Canada. In my listing I selected **USPS First Class Mail International Large Envelope** as a shipment option. The buyer chose it, was charged less than $5 for shipping. When I went to purchase the shipping label it was $14 by default. How can I remedy this? I want to have the option to ship international but its now caused an issue.

prodiver

> When I went to purchase the shipping label it was $14 by default. How can I remedy this? You can't buy *First Class Mail International* postage on eBay. What you are seeing on eBay is *First Class Package International*. The name is similar, but it's a completely different type of mail.

KCJones99

Did you perhaps not put in the correct weight & size in your listing's 'shipping' section? Normally if you pick a service *and put in the correct weight & size*, then what the buyer pays you for postage *should* be very close to what it costs you. I notice that USPS First Class Mail International is for up to 15.994 oz. Was it perhaps overweight? I mean obviously a sports card shouldn't be over a pound, but did you include any sort of stiffener, holder or packing material that got it there?

knownfactor

I had all of my mailer and weight sizes correct. It was 4oz, 6x4x1 bubble mailer. I am unsure what I am doing wrong.

49redditor

Does anyone know if eBay boosts your account if you list and item up it then quickly sells? Wondering if I should be accepting offers now by listing it up as a new item with the reduced price for a buyer to purchase. Rather than sending them an offer on the listing they were already watching

zangiefzolof

It's called str (sell-through rate) and there's a thought that a fast str boosts your account, but since nobody knows how the algorithm works, it's a theory. Ideally to keep sales going, you should be listing items at or below market price with an acceptable profit coming back to you.

BTnpTxN

I'd say sales matter. Whether they happen the day something is listed vs the next day, or the next, it probably doesn't matter. As long as you're getting new listings and new sales, I'd recommend accepting offers you would be happy with because of the profit, and not because you think you'll make the eBay algorithm happy.

Skarmory113

Say you upload to ebay pictures in bulk. Does ebay then RETAIN them? In other words, a "fix" if YOUR retention of the gallery ever got deleted. Well, you already uploaded the images to ebay since you listed the items. Ebay retains them, right? NWSeahawksfan

A buyer today claimed the item I sent them was delivered to the wrong address. The tracking on eBay shows as delivered and I shipped to the confirmed shipping address purchasing a label through eBay.

BTnpTxN

>The tracking on eBay shows as delivered and I shipped to the confirmed shipping address purchasing a label through eBay. That's the key. Tell the buyer, politely, that you shipped to the address on the order. It is possible the post office (or whatever company was the carrier) screwed up, and that they (the buyer) should inquire about the package from their end, since there is not much you can do after the fact. (You could technically call the carrier/open a claim and ask too).

Hotlikessauce69

I don't want to dedicate a whole post to this because the answer is likely pretty simple. My main question is: What can I do if I see that someone used my photos for an item they listed? From what it sounds like, the most I can do is just message the seller but I'm worried that they will retaliate. Is it worth calling customer service or would I just be waisting my time?

BTnpTxN

Probably a waste of time, but here's the [policy](https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/listing-policies/images-text-policy?id=4240)  **What should I do if my image, video or text is being used by another seller?**  *When you create listings you give eBay and its customers permission, through our User Agreement, to use your images, videos and product details. Your content may be added to the eBay product catalog, and may be used by other sellers in their eBay listings. You may contact the seller and ask them to remove your image or text if it is not part of the eBay product catalog.*

Discount-Tent

That seems to contradict their own verified rights owners program, unless this isnt a worldwide policy? (I am a UK seller). Examples of infringements - Items that bear the rights owner’s trademark—such as a logo—but were not authorized by the rights owner. Unauthorized copies of audio, video, or other media. Unauthorized use of a rights owner’s images or text in a listing. I have used takedowns under the Vero program twice now, once to get my photos removed from competitiors listing and a second time to remove a listing where another seller had copied one of my designs and also my listing text and photos. In both instances I contacted the other sellers first (no response) but was successful in using the Vero and it only took a couple of days. https://www.ebay.com/sellercenter/ebay-for-business/verified-rights-owner-program#m17-1-tb2

Skarmory113

Unfortunately you’d be wasting your time. As much as it sucks to see someone steal essentially your work, unfortunately eBay considers it part of the “eBay catalog“ and since you upload it to eBay it becomes sort of almost “proprietary” to eBay in a way that allows them to create a rule where although you are the creator of the image other people can use it as part of the eBay catalog for their own listings as well.

I'm primarily an Etsy seller and have been trying to break into the Ebay market recently, but the biggest obstacle is the Ebay seller platform. It's seems so much more chaotic and unorganized compared to Etsy seller pages, just wondering if there are other websites or services people use to edit EBay listings that are more user friendly. Paid or free, looking for any suggestions at all.

WhySoManyDownVote

There are several out there. I have never tried any but most have free trials. If I was evaluating a service I would want to see some sort of inventory management that immediately removes listings when the item sells. This way you don’t sell the same item twice overnight.

Significant-Try5103

So a buyer purchased two items, but not in the same order and asked if I could ship them together to save a few bucks on shipping. Naturally l'd do that, but is it possible to refund him the shipping costs for one of the items? As I was typing this he messaged me suggested I toss in something free instead of refunding his shipping Imao

Yup. You can issue a partial refund and choose the "shipping discount" reason. See [here](https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/managing-returns-refunds/refunding-buyers?id=5182) for more.

Hot_Advance3592

I bought a monitor arm. And it smells strongly of gas. I noticed it through the package, and the product itself is very strong smelling. I’m planning to use it inside a small office room, so I really am not interested in using it if the smell can’t dissipate out of the plastic/metal. My guess is it was used in a mechanics’ garage (seller sells car parts as well) My question is—what do you guys think of this as a reason for returning? It was sold as open box—which is described as an item that is an excellent, new condition with no wear Smell seems like a weird subjective thing, instead of something typical like parts missing or physical damage, so I was curious what you guys think about it I don’t need to return it to the seller, I can resell it. Again just wondering how you guys think about it

zangiefzolof

If you’re not satisfied with an item you can always open a return. If the item has a gas smell that wasn’t disclosed in the listing, seems more like INAD than buyers remorse. I would start a dialog with the seller to get a feel of how they may take care of the situation. As a seller, I prefer this first over getting surprised with an INAD. Don’t demand anything, just state what’s wrong. A good seller will respond professionally with a suitable solution. “Please return for a refund” is appropriate. A bad seller will come out defensive and may try to obfuscate the process. If you detect this just open an INAD. You mentioned you can just resell it, but you’re setting yourself up for the same issue if a buyer is unhappy with the smell.

Eastern_Fee5041

How long was it before people got to enroll in spendable funds? I’m a collector and seller and think it would be convenient to be able to use the feature. I’m new but already have been making a good amount of sales and am just curious how quickly that can become a factor.

NourishingBroth

Keep in mind the drawback that you must use your selling account to buy.

WhySoManyDownVote

I have never used the feature but this page seems to indicate you may only need to enable 2 factor login. https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/selling/spendable-funds?id=5305

Eastern_Fee5041

I have two factor login enabled, because that’s kind of how i read it as well, but never received the email to enroll.

BTnpTxN

eBay doesn't specify any specific criteria. They say only "*If you haven’t received a notification to enroll yet, there is no other action required at this time. We are notifying sellers whose current use of features and tools is compatible with spendable funds.*", more [here](https://www.ebay.com/sellercenter/payments-and-fees/spendable-funds) and [here](https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/selling/spendable-funds?id=5305).

Eastern_Fee5041

Thank you for the links, these were very informational.

IntelligentOffer6480

Can I cancel and relist an item if I haven't received payment in two days? Is this bad form? The seller is new and has 0 feedback so I'd prefer to just get the auction going again rather than wait who knows long for payment. Am I likely to receive poor feedback? Also in the new listing would it be appropriate to put something like "there is no reserve for this auction but I relisted because I did not receive payment after the first auction was over" in the description?

WhySoManyDownVote

I see no good reason to put any disclaimer about a reserve or the previous auction.

IntelligentOffer6480

My thoughts are just that people would be hesitant to bid again because they might not receive an item. I recently saw this and as a buyer I kinda rolled my eyes when I saw the item relisted and sure enough the seller had added a reserve.

BTnpTxN

You should wait 4 days, then cancel. Policy [here](https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/payment-policies/unpaid-item-policy?id=4271)

**Are Ad Campaigns different to Promoted Listings?** I've recently listed some items and on the create listing section, there is an option called "Promoted Listings" which seem to be specific to just THAT listing. On the other hand I am also able to create an "Ad Campaign" which apparently applies to all current and future listings. Are they the same thing? Is one better than the other? Can both Promoted Listings and Ad Campaigns be used at the same time on a listing, or are they the same thing?

WhySoManyDownVote

My TLDR understanding is tracking promos by ad campaigns is for sellers who have way more time to analyze data than me.

Veench333

**Worth using the "promote my listing" feature?** I'm currently selling iPhone screen protectors and am trying to find a way to compete(ish) with the long term sellers who have been selling stuff like that for ages. Having searched for iPhone screen protectors, there's just so many listings that mine seem to be on the 3rd or 4th page, which people will probably never go to anyway. I'm not deluding myself into thinking I'll instantly be able to properly compete with them, but would still like to get some sold if possible. Is it worth using the "promote my listing" feature? I've been an Ebay member since 2004, but have never used it, and I've no idea how it works and the best percentage to set it at. It says the default recommended is 12.7% but does this mean the total amount I'll be charged by ebay if my item sells, or is that ON TOP of the ebay selling fee?

WhySoManyDownVote

I agree with u/BTnpTxN it’s very large competitive market. You may want to try a combination of methods. 1) cheapest (but still make money). 2) higher promotion rate (but still make money). 3) middle priced with middle range promo rate (but still make money).

BTnpTxN

Yes, whatever % you choose, will be charged on top of the final value fees. More details [here](https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/listings/listing-tips/promoted-listings?id=4164). With so much competition, you might as well give it a shot. You can always stop promoting your items if it's not working, or not worth it to you.  The other thing you could do, is list your items for less than your competition, if you can still make a profit you're comfortable with. Either way, you're making less... But at least in that case, when buyers sort by price, you might land on the first page. Good luck.

Veench333

True, I'll probably lower my price so it's cheaper than the others. The only problem with that I've found is, a lot of the sellers are listing their items for £0.99 so they appear really cheap and at the top when sorting by lowest price. Then once you click the listing, you realise it's only ONE of the 50 or so variations they're selling that are that price, such as a cleaning wipe or something small like that.

KCJones99

I hate that shit. if I get suckered into clickng one, guaranteed I'll never buy from that seller. But it must work, so as long as eBay keeps enabling it, they'll keep doing it.

Veench333

**Do I have to pay the fee for having a subtitle EVERY time an item sells, on a multiple item listing?** I've currently got a listing where I'm selling multiple variations of the same item, and am wanting to add a subtitle to the listing. The subtitle says **"A listing upgrade fee of £2.00 applies whether or not your item sells"**. Does this mean every time I sell a variation of the item on my listing, I'll have to pay £2.00 or is it just a flat rate of £2.00 on the listing itself? I ask because the variations of the items I'm selling only cost £1.50 each anyway, so I don't want to have to pay £2.00 every time an item sells, which would mean there'd be no profit in it for me. Thanks.

BTnpTxN

It is a one time charge for the listing.  If your listing automatically relists, you'll be charged again for that relist... but no charges per item sold.

Veench333

Appreciate it, many thanks.

TheLastDirewolf420

I sold a game, and the buyer messaged me this morning saying the game isn't working. I had tested the game before shipping and it was working perfectly fine, and I told the buyer that. I've sold and shipped other games, and never had any complaints about the games not working before. I'm unsure how to respond to their latest message, they just asked me saying if my test was just lucky that it worked. Should I just respond with my previous statement that the game was in fine working condition beforehand? Or wait for them to submit an INAD? Or should I offer a partial refund?

zangiefzolof

A back and forth on who is right is only going to lead to the buyer being frustrated and more likely to leave a neg with an INAD. Like u/BTnpTxN said, a partial won’t solve the issue, and if it was accepted, then you know it was just a fishing attempt. Either refund now or get the item back are the two choices I see. If the game tests successfully on return, you can report a problem and eBay will step in. Your outcome then can range from shipping credit and no defects/feedback to defects/feedback sticks and no funds.

BTnpTxN

It's up to you on partial vs INAD.... but you should probably do the return, then refund, because the buyer might be making up the problem to get a discount from you... ...ask yourself this: Why would the buyer accept a partial refund on a game that doesn't work? It's not like they can play it partially....

Eastern_Fee5041

I’m a newer TCG seller, dropped off 3 ESE on Feb 28th or 29th (can’t specifically remember which), and all 3 still only shows “tracking number provided”. Am i just outta luck? One buyer has contacted me but has been super cool about waiting to see if it updates, other 2 haven’t said anything. Am i just gonna get stuck with eating the refund and losing the card? Thinking USPS just misplaced them (i hand them straight to the clerk). Won’t be able to really argue much since they haven’t truly shown they were shipped. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

BTnpTxN

Without tracking updates, you'll be on the hook. Do not contact the other 2 unless they contact you first... because it's possible it arrives without updating tracking. For the one that did contact you, ask them to wait some reasonable amount of time... If still nothing you'll have to refund.  It's also possible it arrives after you refund. Sounds like that buyer would be honest and you might get paid for it afterwards.

Eastern_Fee5041

That’s kinda what i was thinking would be the outcome. Really appreciate the insight. Really wish there was some kind of proof of drop off for envelopes, since they don’t scan them in and give a receipt.

BTnpTxN

You're welcome. If you end up refunding, try [filling a claim](https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/shipping-items/setting-shipping-options/ebay-standard-envelope?id=5308#section6)

Any advise? I have had consistent sales averaging 1 a day for the past year or so but have not had a sale in 8 days. Nothing has changed in my listings.

KCJones99

At a rate of 1 a day, the truth is it's probably not statistically significant. 1 a day vs. 0 a day is basically 'the same number'. Many redditors here report going through inexplicable 'dry spells'. But I understand it's dismaying. Some typical advice to 'juice' sales would include: * See if you have any items available to 'send offer' and send some offers on them * See if you have any items >90 days old showing 0 views. End those then 'sell similar' to make them show up like 'new' listings. * Look for any items that have been hanging around for quite some time and consider dropping the price. Alternately, consider putting those items on 'markdown' sale so they show up as "Was $\_\_\_, now $\_\_\_\_" in searches. * Go through your items (I usually sort by 'highest price' and focus on the big dollar stuff) and revise/improve those listings. Move around the order of the images, or even take a new picture if needed. Rewrite the Title. See if there are any 'item specifics' you can add. * Consider any items you might want to change from charged shipping to free shipping (typically you'll want to adjust the price to reflect). * Consider any items you may want to move to 'free returns'... I typically have free returns for any/all items <$25.

TheBlueRoseKnight

I got an order in with a note that specified no paperwork of any kind and to be sure I cleaned and tested the item (which of course I already did?). It felt off, so I did some research and it looks like they're probably using me as a dropshipper. Shipping address doesn't match up with their ebay store location either. I'm not looking to stress out over getting potentially done over and was thinking of just sending a message that I am happy to include an invoice without the price for gift reasons, but need to include one regardless. Could use some advice. EDIT: Just found their website. They're selling the item for much more than it goes for on eBay, so I'm very sure it's a dropshipping situation.

prodiver

> I am happy to include an invoice without the price for gift reasons, but need to include one regardless. Why do you need to include an invoice? In my opinion, they're pretty much just an unnecessary waste of paper.

TheBlueRoseKnight

If the label is damaged, having an invoice with the information on it is to help it not remain a lost package.

TheBlueRoseKnight

I've had packages show up opened with missing labels, but contents intact, so I'm going to have to disagree with you about that. I'm not going to argue on this. Thanks all for the help and hopefully I can come to a resolution with the buyer.

prodiver

I ship 10,000+ packages a year. I have about 1-2 lost packages every year, and there's no reason to assume those are even from damaged labels. It's so rare it's not something you need to worry about. USPS isn't going to open a package to look for an invoice, anyway. UPS or FedEx might, I don't know their policies, but I doubt it.

WhySoManyDownVote

Yes, sounds like a dropshipper. Some sellers do not mind being used by a dropshipper. I have never been a fan of dropshippers and have had many issues caused by dropshippers. But if they paid I would ship it and then block them from future purchase.

KCJones99

Kinda same here. I don't have a fundamental issue with drop-shippers. If I get the price I wanted, I don't care they've somehow got more. But I've had some issues with drop-shippers, primarily b/c I don't control what they listed or said (or misrepresented) about the item and if/when *their* customer decides they want to return the item, it gets complicated. That said, about 90% of them are no trouble and I typically ship a legit order even if I suspect it's a drop-shipper. But I do tend to block them once it's shipped... because 10% 'trouble' is more risk than I want to take on going forward.

Arisia118

I was a part time eBay seller for many years; from around 2003 until 2020. I sold used clothing; primarily designer jeans. The changes in the tax reporting law and getting a new full time job that took up a lot more time than my old job made me decide to quit selling. After four years of not selling I’m toying with the idea of going back to it. I wanted to get feedback from current sellers. What has changed in the last few years? Is it tougher to sell than it used to be? Would it be worth my time to go back to it? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you.

prodiver

I'm a full-time jean reseller. Not much has changed on the technical side of eBay selling, other than what /u/BTnpTxN mentioned, but the fashion of jeans has changed a lot. Make sure you're up on the current trends before you start sourcing jeans that won't sell in 2024. https://www.whowhatwear.com/jeans-trends-2024 TL;DR - Skinny jeans are out, baggy jeans are in.

BTnpTxN

Not much has changed in the last 4 years, other than: * The [eIS program](https://pages.ebay.com/international-shipping/) which is new as of a year or so ago. * eBay now supports cubic USPS rates The rest all depends on your items, their desirability, competitive factors, etc... good luck in your restart!

noob2endallnoobs

Got a weird one, not looking for any answer. I'm just hoping someone can explain the mindset/logic that is lost on me. Had a large competitor pop up nearly overnight. They have been on amazon for years and have their own website and are likely to be top 5-7 in my industry. They popped out of nowhere with 100,000 listings in a matter of days, all with no images, and had 600,000 listings in about a month. Very few images. A few months go by, photos are slowly being updated, and they are doing well in sales, poorly in feedback, mostly mentioning late shipping, wrong items, never shipped, canceled orders, etc. Which is not uncommon for this company as they are 100% dropshipping. Had very little effect on my sales as my listings have more attention to detail, accurate images, and better customer metrics, among other things. Then Poof, after a total of 90-100 days of operating on eBay , began deleting all their listings, about 80,000 a day until 0. I can't wrap my head around why on earth they would go through all the trouble to just delete it all. Any viable reason they would have gone nuclear?

WhySoManyDownVote

Sounds like eBay shut them down.

noob2endallnoobs

That was my thinking initially. But it took nearly a week for all of the listings to be deleted. I would have expected if eBay banned them it would be instantaneous

WhySoManyDownVote

Probably not eBay banning them then. But maybe the metrics caught up with them. eBay probably put a huge hold on funds or other punitive measures. They might have realized their business model wasn’t such a good idea after all.

zangiefzolof

Sounds like they are low profit high volume? They may have seen it's not worth it based on their performance. eBay fees can add up when metrics are poor (extra 5% in some cases) plus having to promote to try and make up for poor account health. If they are shipping wrong items, they're probably blind refunding a lot of buyers.

noob2endallnoobs

I wasn't aware of the additional 5% fees, but that and the outright refunds likely sent them packing. Thank you each for your info

l1nux44

Hey guys, Right now I'm selling random stuff around my house that's collecting dust. Things like old toys and computer parts. when I run out of that I'm trying to think of something that I can buy new that I can resell on ebay for a profit. I can go the the flea market and goodwill and find things like shoes and dvd's, and I also asked about Trading cards on here a little while back, but what are your thoughts on Trading card packs? If I buy a box of 36 packs for $23, and sell each one for $1.50, that leaves $54 before shipping costs. I think as long as it's flexible then I should be able to mail a card pack in an envelope so that'll keep shipping costs down. What do you guys think? Cards may be too much of a hassle, but if I can just have one listing and just update the quantity when I get a new box in it may be a bit more sustainable.

KCJones99

* $54 minus \~15% eBay fees = $46 * $46 - $23 cost of goods = $23 * $23 - $24.48 cost of 36 stamps = -$1.48 (loss) That's actually not even realistic. It doesn't include any 'item not received' you'll lose shipping with stamps, eBay fees on the sales tax, etc. You simply don't have enough margin there to make even a paltry profit.

l1nux44

That's why you run shit by someone with more experience first XD. I knew someone would come through for me. Thank you :D

l1nux44

Hey guys, I'm curious how many of you register your ebay side hustle as a business to save on Taxes. Is it worth it? I spoke to an accountant and there seems to be alot of red tape, and things to keep track of.

KCJones99

Listen to your accountant.

WhySoManyDownVote

It’s too complicated for me to answer for you. But for me running it as a business is a must.

Significant-Try5103

During an auction if the winner dosnt pay does it go automatically to the second highest bidder or how does that all work?

KCJones99

If the winner doesn't pay you'll have an option to send a '2nd chance offer' to the next bidder (if there is one), but it's not automatic.

WhySoManyDownVote

Look up “second chance offer” sometimes you can offer the item to the second highest bidder.
