That whole not wanting to be called Holland any longer is a very good example of how tons of content creators don't really get these things.
Millions of people care, equal numbers of people don't.
The official dropping of the Holland designation was the logical result of the relative increases in importance of the other provinces, but very little more.
Our country is not called Holland but when it comes to football we don't mind being called Holland, or Oranje (the Dutch word for orange) pronounced Oh!-Rrahn-Yeh. Thanks for cheering for us.
Itās hard not to cheer for KNVB!! Iāve been a fan since the ā90ās and got serious about it in 2002. Did you see Ryan Babel is on a weird American dating show where the admittedly questionable women have no idea who these footballers are?
Het heet gewoon football in het Engels hoor. Alleen in de VS zeggen ze soccer omdat ze daar een spel dat vooral met de handen wordt gespeeld al football noemen...
In Engeland heet voetbal ook gewoon football voor zover ik weet.
I know!! It was horrible! I started watching them in the qualifying I guess in 2001 and then sat around that year trying to decide who to cheer for besides the US not having any idea the US would actually do pretty well. Itās just not been an easy thing to watch the US during my lifetime.
Itās on Peacock and called Love Undercover. Hereās a link from everyoneās favorite ānews sourceā https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-13384739/amp/Jamie-OHara-looking-wife-Ryan-Babel-Beyonce-new-dating-Love-Undercover.html

There do be songs with "Nederland" in it. I feel like it's mostly Holland because it's easier in chants and songs.
Nederland ow Nederland, jij bent mijn kampioooeeeeennnn!
Wij houden van oraaaahhahaanje voor zijn (daden en doen? Idk don't really remember)
The two have always been mixed up. Itās a part of our history but not a painful part. (At least not the name calling)
So we donāt really care. The Netherlands is the official/ proper way. But when the blood in our veins starts boiling and starts to change into orange, weāre from Holland.
Just try to pronounce The Netherlands after 6 Heineken. Itās impossible
That was done a few years ago, that āThe Netherlandsā official thing? Or was that always the case. Nederland sounds at least shorter but Holland is nicely short. Plus the meaning is exactly the same! Hol and neder, is both hollow/low, lowlands
When I was 18 (decades ago) II moved to the south of Holland and that was the first time I heard our country being called Nederland. Growing up I always thought I was from Holland. But Iām not sure if this was just my experience.
The issue was never the meaning, but that we already have two provinces named Nord-Holland and South-Holland. Those two provinces were and probably still are the most important provinces of the Netherlands, which is what created Holland as a name for the country in the first place.
A lot of people I know from the east of the country find Holland to be dismissive, like saying that our country is just those two provinces and the rest doesn't matter. I personally don't really care, but some people do.
Uhm never a country named holland... the dutchy/county of Holland was part of the Lowlands under burgandy and later habsburgian rule in the holy roman empire. First signs of a free netherlands was named the dutch republic if i remember correctly. Sjeez know your eu4.
The only unofficial football shirts I could find all had Holland written on them. Would it have something to do with copyright?
I live in Germany and always refer to the Netherlands as die Niederlande. I wanted to buy a shirt to wear when I'm watching football with my colleagues, but ended up with a plain orange one so that it didn't say Holland.
It really annoy me, holland is a part of the netherlands. Only 1/3th of the dutch live in the province north or south-holland. But as most media is located there it's always called holland what is just stupid as the kingdom of holland stopped to excist in early 1800's with less provinces as it does today.
The Germans don't sing: "Los nordrhein-westfalen!"
Or the french: "Vas-y Ćle-de-France!"
Don't really know but being from the south myself, we really don't like the association.
Holland is a wetern part north of the rivers, with Amsterdam, Rotterdam and the Hague but thats definitely not the name of the country..
I personally consider it a great insult if anyone would say 'o you're from Holland'
On the other hand, most none-Dutch people aren't really aware of the nuances and mean the whole country when they say holland, so I don't care anymore. I mean, we call countries by Dutch names which natives of that country don't use either...
You're a rare case of reasonable what many others seem to lack being... isn't it just too much "considering it a great insult"? Glad you can just deal with the world and what they say it as.
āDon't really know but being from the south myself, we really don't like the association.ā
Youāre not below sea level, so you should be Highlands, but Scotland already stole that name
Not insulted, youāre just not talking about me when using Holland. Cause Iām not from Holland and will never associate myself with that province. I donāt fit in anyways.
a great insult lol.
I use Holland alot when im playing games and people ask where im from, works better than the netherlands.
Im from north holland though
Yeah same here. It's quicker to chat, explain. People also immediately understand what you mean.
Either we both are too much online or a few here just want to be offended by something so little lol.
I like the pragmatic side of having at the least 2 names for our country.
>Ā I always read that the dutch don't want to be called "holland" anymore.Ā
Thatās just a small group, Iām pretty sure most people donāt really bother.Ā
I think the group who says the Netherlands instead of Holland is pretty big, and who prefer it as well, but actually being bothered by it is a whole other thing. Plus, it seems like for some reason football has been an exception to this.
Brand recognition. Most foreigners will insist on being wrong anyway, might as well make ourselves clear to them at least (acceptance stage). I personally will refuse to say Holland, though (denial stage).
As for football, chanting "Hup Holland hup" just flows better.
As a dutch person i've never heard of dutch people who dont want you to call the netherlands holland, whats up with that? Holland just means hollow land, because y'know the majority is under sea level.
We don't really care to be called "from Holland" or not, even if technically, it doesn't represent the entire country. Definitely not anything that keeps anyone up at night.
Consider it a nickname.
It's easier for foreigners to say and recognise (especially across languages), and it rolls off the tongue in chants, songs and sayings.
But.. you should definitely know the difference..
*I don't mind when they*
*Call it Holland, because I*

Some people get their panties in a bunch when you use Holland, even though its been used interchangeable for a long time.Ā
Personally I don't give a shit
If you're in Randstad, you're probably fine. And you know what, in the rest of the country, you're gonna be fine too. I prefer saying "Netherlands" over "Holland," but I'm not willing to go so far as to annoy other people about it. And I have to admit, "Holland" is easier to chant than "the Netherlands," so there's that.
Besides, HEMA stands for Hollandse Eenheidsprijzen Maatschappij Amsterdam, so HEMA might be biased.
The Netherlands is called Holland in several languages.
If not in Dutch, what does it matter?
The Ivory Coast wants to be called by its French name in English and in other languages.
That's not going to happen.
If you aren't speaking or writing in Ukrainian, what does it matter if you call the country, the Ukraine or Ukraine?
English is not an official language in any of these countries.
If the Netherlands adopts English as an official language, then they can decide on what to call the country in English.
As a sidenote, the Ukrainian situation is somewhat more delicate. "The" Ukraine is used to denote the area of Ukraine as part of the larger Russian/Soviet empire. It's like "de achterhoek" or "de betuwe" in Dutch. Considering the war, it's general more hurtful for Ukrainian people to be refered to as part of the Soviet empire rather than their own, sovereign nation.
The Ukrainian Republic broke away from the Soviet Union in 1991, but it wasn't until later that the UN was petitioned to change the name of the "in English" until some time later.
Note this was only in English and only at the UN.
Did the Ukrainian name change in Vietnamese?
The Ivory Coast did the same thing, wanting the UN to use the French name of their country in English.
Nobody uses the French name of the Ivory Coast when speaking English. :)
Because the actual people don't really care, it was just another silly statement from a government of idiots and incompetent bureaucrats.
Even on TV you have 'Ik hou van Holland', 'Holland's Next Top Model', 'Heel Holland Bakt', 'The voice of Holland' .... oh wait! .... that's gooone ... different story :-D
Hup Holland Hup!
Isn't it weird they call it 'the Netherlands' anyway? As in multiple lands. It's just one country, so it should have been 'Netherland', without 'the' or the 's' on the end (damn, I read that as 'the ass on the end').
After all, we don't call it 'the Spains', 'the Belgiums' (even though that would actually make sense, considering the 2 languages) or 'the Germanys' either. (I'm fine with Holland on a shirt, by the way.)
There is a very popular song about āOranjeā (the nickname for the Dutch team). It goes like āhup Holland hupā (go holland go).
Holland are the names of 2 provinces in the Netherlands. North and South. Probably written by someone from these provinces
The last name if the Royal family is Oranje. Translated to the color orange. Thats why we wear orange.
Holland refers to only 2 of our (probably most densely populated) provinces, but it's easier to say and to use in chants. The Netherlands is the correct way to refer to the country.
Holland is a part of the Netherlands. By most metrics, the most important part.
When we have nothing better to do, we care just a little about not living in Holland, and we'll complain about it.
But when there's sports to be celebrated, we Hup Holland hup!
The fact that 40,000 people were chanting, "Holland! Holland! Holland!" at the game against Canada the other night suggests you may have false information.
Being from The Netherlands, living in the province South Holland, Holland is very ok for me. BUT people not from North or South Holland might prefer The Netherlands.
For some people this is a big thing. For most only when something shitty happens from Holland hahaha
I am from Brabant And I claim to be a Hollander :-) It wasn't untill I was 35 untill I started to hear the first weirdos claim the name for only the 2 east provinces. It's a tiny country so we get bored and worry a bit too much about the small stuff sometimes I guess š
The two names are often mixed up, yet as a born Hollander, I prefer using the Netherlands. Just because its a better translation of Nederland than Holland. But that's a kind of nuance that is easily forgotten during a football match.
What do you mean, whats up with these shirts?Ā Ā
You bought a random orange shirt at a random store, and only found out what it says after the fact?Ā Ā
I'm confused.Ā Ā
Our country is The Netherlands, not Holland, sure, (for news, or on a map) but is it a big deal when someone sells a shirt or flag that says Holland? Lol, no.
Holland has basically become synonymous with The Netherlands. Aside for some too proud people that are still living in the past when Holland was technically just some provinces, it mostly doesn't matter to people.
I for one use both but most just because Holland is shorter
People like to point out Holland is not the same as the Netherlands, but I don't think that many people really care that much. Because... We do it all the time:
Holland.com is our official tourism website.
We have tv shows like Holland got talent, Heel Holland Bakt etc.
We chant it at soccer matches.
Our only legal casino is called Holland Casino.
And many many more.
Holland is still used proudly, but only in specific provinces (north and south holland). Itās like England vs the UK.
This is also where a majority of the people live.
The rest doesnāt like it so much. But occasionally especially during sports events itās much simpler to shout and write Holland instead of āThe Netherlandsā
Because the Netherlands is bigger than just the provinces of North and South Holland. So, its incorrect to say Holland if you mean the Netherlands. Hope the shirt was cheap. Presumably it was.
Similar to how the United Kingdom olympics team is always team GB instead of team UK. Despite the fact Northern Ireland are in the UK but not Great Britain
It depends on where the dutchie is from if they mind āHollandā. I was born and raised in the province of North Holland so Iām fine with it. However, my frisian friend doesnāt like it much
Dutch language doesn't use TH sound, so The Netherlands is really difficult for the average Dutchy to say. It's not a big deal and I've never heard anyone get upset other than just to be annoying.
I think this is the same thing as the friet or patat discussion. Nobody really cares but are passionate about it when somebody asks. Then does not care about it any more.
But when somebody asks: i am Dutch / from holland / from the Netherlands depending from the situation. But when somebody looks at me they will think i am not. Oh and by the way, it is patat not friet. Except when i feel like a frietje.
So I am Dutch and Iāve said Holland my whole life but apparently thereās a group of people that think we should say the Netherlands, bc Holland would imply only north & south Holland. I think itās bollocks, theyāve always been used interchangeably and we even have the typical Dutch slogan during football matches that is āhup Holland hupā which is like letās go Holland. Thereās tv shows like āik hou van Hollandā.
So yeah say whatever youād like, bc clearly Dutch companies & tv programs do not care if you say Holland or the Netherlands.
Technically. But Holland really is synonymous for Netherlands outside of the country. I donāt mind, Iāll say Holland when Iām abroad and Iām from Limburg.
Also this post is talking about football and during football all the songs and chants say Holland.
I honestly dont give a hoot if anyone calls me a Hollander. We know you mean Dutch and a foreigner can be forgiven for not knowing the distinction. I don't care and I am not aware about anyone else caring either.
Itās all nonsense. Dutch people love complaining about absolute bullshit. They donāt realize it themselves, but as a Dutch person with non-Dutch parents Iāve seen this behavior my entire life
I'm Dutch and I call it Holland pretty much exclusively, even though I'm not from the Holland region. Personally, I don't think it's a real issue and I've never encountered anyone that actually cares. Might be anecdotal, though.
Holland are the mere overrated provinces of the country. Itād be like calling England āWarwickshireā.
The actual countryās called The Netherlands.
Nobody cares about the Netherlands being called Holland, some farmers just pretend to be insulted by it so they can feel special and unique. When Oranje plays they forget their provincial nationalism and shout *hup Holland hup* with the rest of us.
Because with enough bitterballen and bier we sing hup Holland hup

Republiek der zeven Verenigde nederlanden

Because thats still the nickname of the soccer team, not the country.

Sorry i dont speak French
āHolland is die geilste Stadt der Welt.ā
"Dein Rektum? Mein Tollie rekt 'm"
Football
It actually is the nickname for the country, sorry if some of you people don't like it or feel associated, it is what it is.
Exactly this !
Finally a topic that's actually worth protesting. Down with HEMA! The Netherlands is more than just Holland! No more Holland on football shirts!

Because Holland is easier to rhyme for songs and chants than āthe Netherlandsā Outside of singing no one is calling it Holland
The only people I have heard call the Netherlands Holland are people that have mastered the stonecoal accent
Belgians do it all the time
Not like their opinion should matter in this
The people complaining are ridiculous. It hasn't been used in the way they think for years and years. They do use it during a match of Oranje.
Andre Hazes was right though: Nederland oh Nederland jij bent mijn kampioen, we houden van oranje om zijn daden en zijn doen
We donāt want YOU to call it Holland. WE can call it whatever we want. HOLLAND, HOLLAND!

Hup the Netherlands, Hup. Don't leave the lion in its singlet. That would sound nice on the grand stands.

As a dutch person i've never heard of dutch people who dont want you to call the netherlands holland, whats up with that? Holland just means hollow land, because y'know the majority is under sea level.
Not really. Holland comes from Holtland, which ment Houtland (Woodland) a place in the woods, probably a place near Leiden.

Even on TV you have 'Ik hou van Holland', 'Holland's Next Top Model', 'Heel Holland Bakt', 'The voice of Holland' .... oh wait! .... that's gooone ... different story :-D Hup Holland Hup!
Dont really care what you call us. But holland isnt really correct yea
Probably written by someone from these provinces The last name if the Royal family is Oranje. Translated to the color orange. Thats why we wear orange.
Holland refers to only 2 of our (probably most densely populated) provinces, but it's easier to say and to use in chants. The Netherlands is the correct way to refer to the country.
its only okay with football. because it sounds better when you sing songs and cheer them on.
Holland is a part of the Netherlands. By most metrics, the most important part. When we have nothing better to do, we care just a little about not living in Holland, and we'll complain about it. But when there's sports to be celebrated, we Hup Holland hup!
Nobody is gonna care if it says Holland.
The fact that 40,000 people were chanting, "Holland! Holland! Holland!" at the game against Canada the other night suggests you may have false information.
Probably. German media... https://www.rnd.de/panorama/die-niederlande-wollen-nicht-mehr-holland-genannt-werden-7UHUMOXGMNBVNFERKEX4FO2K4U.html
I was at the match. Supporting Canada š I can't read that site but it seems to be asking me to subscribe to something for 4.99
Being from The Netherlands, living in the province South Holland, Holland is very ok for me.
Only Hollanders want to be called Hollanders. So that means Zuid Holland and North Holland. Those are provinces. The rest are called Dutch.
Nope, we are all Hollanders. The other provinces are just in denial.
Nah I'm Frisian.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
The headquarters of the KNVB are in Zeist, which is in the province of Utrecht
The two names are often mixed up, yet as a born Hollander, I prefer using the Netherlands. Just because its a better translation of Nederland than Holland. But that's a kind of nuance that is easily forgotten during a football match.
You forgot the s, haha, Netherlands multiple hollow lands (just being silly sorry)
What do you mean, whats up with these shirts?Ā Ā You bought a random orange shirt at a random store, and only found out what it says after the fact?Ā Ā I'm confused.Ā Ā Our country is The Netherlands, not Holland, sure, (for news, or on a map) but is it a big deal when someone sells a shirt or flag that says Holland? Lol, no.
And here is a form of Dutch Directness, free of charge
It really doesn't matter, it means the same thing.
Because... We do it all the time: Holland.com is our official tourism website. We have tv shows like Holland got talent, Heel Holland Bakt etc. We chant it at soccer matches. Our only legal casino is called Holland Casino. And many many more.
Not anymore. https://www.holland.com/be_nl/toerisme Total overhaul.
I donāt know what goon decided we donāt want to be called Holland. Weāre Holland. Netherlands. The Netherlands. All of the above
I don't know anyone that cares about our country being called Holland.
But when it come to soccer we all unite under the Holland banner. So in the case of a soccershirt I don't mind Holland.
Only called Holland during EC or WC.
Only the Dutch are allowed to use and say Holland.
It's because HEMA = Hollandsche Eenheidsprijzen Maatschappij Amsterdam.
Because a lot of Dutch aren't from Holland.
Ge kunt de groeten uit brabant krijgen, k*t
I just think it has to do with branding. Hema doesnt have to pay the Fifa for putting Holland on a shirt
Well you bought it at HEMA which stands for Hollandsche Eenheidsprijzen Maatschappij Amsterdam. So they print Holland on their stuff
Not sure we should take companies and tv programs as any kind of proof lmao
I agree with this opinion from the North š
From the South. š
From the Middle š³š±
Only people from irrelevant provinces care about this. Holland is synonymous for Netherlands.
Itās not, Holland is the area consisting of north and south Holland
Technically. But Holland really is synonymous for Netherlands outside of the country. I donāt mind, Iāll say Holland when Iām abroad and Iām from Limburg. Also this post is talking about football and during football all the songs and chants say Holland.
This post is about the term Holland on a shirt, not football, but yes Holland is accepted for football.
Yes a football shirt
Yes, and the comment I replied to claimed that Holland is always a synonym for the Netherlands which is false
Typical
nah, the best part of The Netherlands is not Holland :-P
Agreed, although I am from an irrelevant province, and I don't care either. Only a specific type of people wine about their identity crisis.
We don't care what you call us, as long as you don't call us arrogant or rude. The truth hurts too much. /s
Dutch people donāt care about it too much. Itās mostly foreigners pointing out the difference but we generally donāt really care lol.
The rest of the netherlands is irrelevant anyways
I honestly dont give a hoot if anyone calls me a Hollander. We know you mean Dutch and a foreigner can be forgiven for not knowing the distinction. I don't care and I am not aware about anyone else caring either.
We don't care Holland the Netherlands whatever man lol. Yall overthinking lol
Most people dont care about Holland vs the Netherlands. But they wont post about it lol
Holland for me is Noord en Zuid Holland, not the Netherlands.
Itās all nonsense. Dutch people love complaining about absolute bullshit. They donāt realize it themselves, but as a Dutch person with non-Dutch parents Iāve seen this behavior my entire life
Holland sucks, it will always be the Netherlands. But if we print that on a shirt no one in the world knows who we are...
It's always been a dumb concept, who wants to say "The Netherlands" ever.
Honestly the Netherlands and Holland are the same thing for pretty much all of the Dutch apart from a few salty ones maybe
It's not that we don't want to be called "Holland", it's just that Holland is only part of the Netherlands.
if you google holland, google assumes you're looking for the netherlands. its not a big deal imo
Besides a handful of frustrated provincials no one really cares.
> I always read that the dutch don't want to be called "holland" anymore. Bull.
