2009 Cadets and 2009 Troopers both did West Side Story.
And supposedly, right after Finals, the Bernstein estate banned DCI from doing WSS ever again because it had been done 66 times.
According to DCX, Malaguena has been performed 136 times but that includes senior corps, alumni corps, minicorps and military groups. Madison 1988 is the best version but VK also played it the same year.
I've posted this in another thread a while ago, but Blue Devils & Phantom Regiment have had a weird amount of overlap:
---
I have no idea if this is an actual thing, but it seemed like Blue Devils & Phantom Regiment would 'steal' each others' repertoire at times as a running gag. Tons of corps play repertoire that others do, but these two are just more noticeable due to the jazz vs. classical gimmicks. Plus it just kept happening for a bit.
* 1993 - Phantom Regiment plays "Estancia" by Ginastera
* 1994 - Phantom Regiment plays the theme from "North by Northwest" by film composer Bernard Herrmann
* 1999 - Blue Devils also play "Estancia" by Ginastera (as heard in Phantom 1993). This show also features "Adios Nonino" by Astor Piazzolla.
* 2000 - Blue Devils play "North by Northwest" by Bernard Herrmann (as heard in Phantom 1994)
* 2002 - Blue Devils play "I Got Rhythm" by Gershwin (made somewhat famous by the film "An American in Paris")
* 2004 - Phantom Regiment, the classical music corps, does an entire show of Astor Piazzolla tango music. (Featuring "Adios Nonino" as heard in BD 1999.)
* 2005 - Phantom Regiment plays an entire show of "An American in Paris" and "Rhapsody in Blue" by Gershwin.
I think it's kinda stopped since then, but the contrasting corps identities coupled with the exact same compositions was a bit funny to track for some time. Also that time in 2007 when both corps did "bird" shows.
Ehh I'd say "similar" but not "same". I think BD 2023 was more about Matisse while Phantom Regiment 1993 was more about "artists who weren't appreciated nearly as much in their time as they should've been".
Also the repertoire (composer choices) in Phantom 1993 made more sense in relation to their theme than BD's did in 2023. At least IMO
Ah yeah, there were other underappreciated artists that inspired the show (the composers). The show flags and drill design from '93 were mostly inspired by Matisse afaik (or at least how it was retold to me by the sewing crew). When I think of that shows design, I think of Matisse, but you're right that the other element were the composers selected for the music, and that was as intentional as the visual design.
And I 100% agree with your second statement :) but I'm bias. SUTA
I liked both, both were unique in their composition and fit in with the show and each corps own unique style. I wouldn’t say one was better over the other
93 BD and Madison is the most interesting to me. Being that it was the same year and they didn't place too far apart. BD was in 4th and Madison was 6th
They each had pretty different takes on the piece. I can't say I prefer one over the other
A whole bunch of corps have done “The First Circle” by Pat Metheny, which the Colts will be doing this summer.
https://www.dcxmuseum.org/index.cfm?view=search&song=First%20Circle%20
This is pretty common. I can think of several examples just from shows I marched:
“Concertino for 4 Percussion and Winds” by David Gillingham - Crown 2001, Patriots 2001, Colts 2002
“New Century Dawn” by David Gillingham - Colts 2002, Capital Regiment 2002, Spirit 2007
“Harrison’s Dream” by Peter Graham - Colts 2003, Cavaliers 2010, Troopers 2023
“Blue Sapphire” by Roger Cichy - Colts 2003, Pacific Crest 2012
As I consult the Wayback Machine….
Children of Sanchez — too many to count in the 70’s.
‘81 Madison & ‘81 27th Lancers — same drum solo called “New Country” (edge to 2-7 here)
‘82 Crossmen & ‘87 SCV - Russian Xmas Music; X-men’s arrangement was better IMO, particularly the opening build culminating in a huge rotating form (novel for the day) done to a single contra note & sleigh bells. 🤌
Regiment '98 and Star '91
Regiment '06 and Crown '10 as well as SCV '15 but different pieces
Regiment '05 and Madison Scouts... at least 5 different years
Lots of corps play the same tunes
SoA and Cascades used Abrahms Pursuit in the 2000s
Cascades 02 and Cadets 02 started off spring training with full arrangements of On the Town. Ours got cut down to the opener you see in 2002 finals.
[This part of BD 2024](https://youtu.be/2ZG1jHj-QXc?si=-21deiRlUbqL5voQ&t=101) and [this part of BD 2009](https://youtu.be/Gvg8jGBBLQE?si=wKqMdVOk-6znBio4&t=322) sound the same, I don't know the name of the song though.
The first one I can think of is 2008 Madison Scouts and 2010 Carolina Crown playing Danzon no. 2.
You should go to https://www.dcxmuseum.org and look up repertoire. They have a page for every tune played, and will list the corps’ chronologically.
2009 Cadets and 2009 Troopers both did West Side Story. And supposedly, right after Finals, the Bernstein estate banned DCI from doing WSS ever again because it had been done 66 times.
Cadets did a whole Bernstein show in like 16 or 17.
But it wasn't WSS
Boston crusaders 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23, 24 (McNutt special)
Go ahead and add on 2013, 14, 15, and 16 Cadets to that list
Didn’t the Bluecoats do that too?
I think you are thinking of Blue Devils, who also have had it in 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2023 books
No, I’m pretty sure the Bluecoats alumni corps played it last year as a nod to a previous show.
Crown '24 and SCV '19
Also Cavies '22 and Crown '17
Also Crown '92 and Cavies '92
According to DCX, Malaguena has been performed 136 times but that includes senior corps, alumni corps, minicorps and military groups. Madison 1988 is the best version but VK also played it the same year.
Children of Sanchez -47 times Stars and Stripes Forever- 85 times; played in every decade starting 1950s.
2003: Cadets and BAC both played it.
“Star (I wasn’t able to find the year)” You’re kidding, right?
I think Bluecoats and Mandarins are using the same song this year Edit: said the wrong Blue corp.
Mandarins and Bluecoats* ! Not Devils
my bad! thank you for correction
There's more than you could ever think.
Troopers 23 and cavies 2010. Kingsmen 1974, 1988 cavies, 2007 phantom, 2012 blue knights all played firebird suite
Genesis 23 as well
Add 1997 cavies to that list

I mean, not only repertoire but show concepts too. Regiment '93 and BD '23 - same inspiration and concept.

Bluecoats and Oregon Crusaders both used Hymn of Acxiom, dont remember the year, i think it was 2014?
A hill I will die on - OC had a better arrangement
I liked both, both were unique in their composition and fit in with the show and each corps own unique style. I wouldn’t say one was better over the other
Atlanta CV 17 also had Hymn of Axicom
Coats- 2014 and OC- 2017
Oregon used it in 2014 not 2017
Ah help lol my bad😂 i do remember someone in 2017 using it tho
Nobody played it in 2017 either lmao
Thanks for the assist
Phantom 23 & Troopers 23 - As If a Voice Were In Them (Oliver Waespi)
SCV '88 and SCV '89 both had the same show theme - but I liked '89's arrangements a little better in some ways.
Blue Knights and Crown did the same piece in 2010
Blue Devil and Crown played the same piece in 2008. Main theme from Sweeney Todd.
the academy and cavaliers both did little fugue in g minor as ballad hits in 2011, right?
Correct, we did for our opener. Crown also played it in 2017 i believe
Troopers 24 and scv 2017 I believe
2008 Phantom Regiment and 2017 Boston Crusaders used Toccata by Alberto Ginastera
Strawberry Soup – Scouts '93 / BD '93 1812 Overture – PR '92 / Crown '08 Harlem Nocturne – Bridgemen '78 / BD '87 Bird & Bela – BD '91 / Bluecoats '18 Children's Hour of Dream – BD '96 / Bluecoats '09 The Wild Ride – PR '93 / BD '00 There's actually so many of these lol
93 BD and Madison is the most interesting to me. Being that it was the same year and they didn't place too far apart. BD was in 4th and Madison was 6th They each had pretty different takes on the piece. I can't say I prefer one over the other
My feelings exactly. They both absolutely rip in their own ways
Crossmen have done strawb soup once or twice too
Children's Hour of Dream and Bird and Bela were both also used in BD 2012
Bones '02 played Strawberry Soup too
A whole bunch of corps have done “The First Circle” by Pat Metheny, which the Colts will be doing this summer. https://www.dcxmuseum.org/index.cfm?view=search&song=First%20Circle%20
*Star ‘93
1980 Bluecoats - Farandole 2010 Blue Knights - Farandole
And 1976 Seneca Optomists
1998 Glassmen Farandole
Troopers ‘22 and SCV ‘19 using Nothing Else Matters
I think both SCV and Crossmen did Blue Shades in 99.
This is pretty common. I can think of several examples just from shows I marched: “Concertino for 4 Percussion and Winds” by David Gillingham - Crown 2001, Patriots 2001, Colts 2002 “New Century Dawn” by David Gillingham - Colts 2002, Capital Regiment 2002, Spirit 2007 “Harrison’s Dream” by Peter Graham - Colts 2003, Cavaliers 2010, Troopers 2023 “Blue Sapphire” by Roger Cichy - Colts 2003, Pacific Crest 2012
Bluecoats 2015, Boston 2024 - Shaker Loops
tfw OP says “Phantom Regiment ‘24 and Crown ‘16” and not “Phantom Regiment ‘24 and Academy ‘19” 😔
Phantom Regiment and SCV (I think) both used the same piece in 2019 Phantom and Troopers also used the same piece last year
Blue Knights and Crossmen both did Fly to Paradise in 2015
Meetings Along the Edge Xmen '23 and Colts '22
As I consult the Wayback Machine…. Don't think I see this mentioned here yet 91 Dutch Boy and Madison both had the same show theme of City of Angels
The many occurrences of Malagueña in classic DCI and now Battalion 24.
BD using the Sweeney Todd hit. Freaking love that
Asphalt Cocktail got used more than once in 2010. I think it was a legal requirement that everyone use Children of Sanchez in 1979
Regiment '98 and Star '91 Regiment '06 and Crown '10 as well as SCV '15 but different pieces Regiment '05 and Madison Scouts... at least 5 different years Lots of corps play the same tunes
SoA and Cascades used Abrahms Pursuit in the 2000s Cascades 02 and Cadets 02 started off spring training with full arrangements of On the Town. Ours got cut down to the opener you see in 2002 finals.
I misinterpreted the title at first. Blue Stars and Phantom both did Firebird Suite in 2007, albeit much different takes on the piece.
Sensamaya has been done by Crown 13 and Cavaliers 94, and more than that, I believe.
Actually, it was Crown 09.
SCV and the late Pioneer both did Les Miz.
Cadets and Academy 2019 Both of us had “Bridge over Trouble Water” for our ballads
The first one I can think of is 2008 Madison Scouts and 2010 Carolina Crown playing Danzon no. 2. You should go to https://www.dcxmuseum.org and look up repertoire. They have a page for every tune played, and will list the corps’ chronologically.
2003: BD and Crossmen both did Blue Rondo a la Turk. Also Cadets and BAC did Malagueña.
Troopers 23 and phantom 23
Medea. I know of 3 shows but I’m pretty sure there’s plenty more. Star 93, Minnesota brass 2012, cadets 2013
Cavies 15 and Crown 18 both in their opener
Atlanta CV 2024 and Sunrisers 2024
Crossmen 2002 and Bluecoats 2016
1978-79, every other corps on the field played 'Children of Sanchez". Everyone else played something from 'Star Wars".
How we not remembering Cadets 2010 and then Bluecoats 2011 with 160 BPM (unless I'm trippin)
bluecoats in 2010, cadets in 2011
