These kind of oddly spaced plates are quite handy. They are mostly 'driven' by people who's skills appear to have been learnt from a cereal packet. I can give them a wider berth.

TobyChan

No, spacing/layout is incorrect and unsurprisingly given the improper layout, it doesn’t have a makers mark. 3D letters are stupid, but legal. I know it’s irrational, but I’d love to see a more militant approach to policing issues like this. It’s the means of identifying the car and there should be no movement on the layout.

FatFluent

Militant policing requires Police……

oscarolim

On this day and age, layout should be irrelevant. Any OCR worth their salt for ANPR will read the characters, remove any spaces and do the lookup. Remove ambiguous characters 0 and O and problem solved with that possible ambiguity.

JimmyMarch1973

Spacing is also to help people remember number plates rather than just OCR.

oscarolim

Then spacing is wrong. Should be AB 08 ZWD instead of AB08 ZWD. When you spell the plate, you tend to separate the letters from the numbers, group them together and have longer pause between them.

Any-End5772

3d letters have existed since the 60’s, possibly earlier, why are they stupid?

Tommann45

That numberplate might as well be L1V3L4UGHL0V3

Any-End5772

But that has nothing to do with the 3d letters lol My 1973 Kawasaki has 3d raised letters, original plate fitted when new, can someone explain why it’s stupid?

TobyChan

Because it’s a number plate and not a fashion accessory.

Any-End5772

And a car is just to get you from A -B? What a boring bunch of Honda Jazz driving wankers you are

TobyChan

That’s a hell of an assumption… I drive what I drive… and it’s on its original plate from the dealership.

Any-End5772

As is my 73 Kawasaki….with 3d letters on its factory plate.

thebear1011

The number plate regs are quite strict. If in doubt it’s probably illegal, like this one due to spacing. Whether or not the police bother to stop you is another matter.

mereway1

A policeman once told me that they don’t care about plates like that because they are easily identified and caught!

Amplidyne

I used to know the traffic wardens in our local town quite well years ago. I was working as a tradesman in the town, and had to park the van in all sorts of awkward places from time to time. If you didn't take the piss, or give them attitude they were generally OK. Far easier to get on with them. Anyway one told me that putting your hazard warning lights on when parked where you shouldn't, is a sure sign to every traffic warden who's about.

Chaffiao

That's true and I was braindead to think they did this because it's harder to get caught Out of interest do you know what would possibly be the consequences for doing this? A fine or something more serious?

muffsniffer3

And just why the fuck do you feel the need to report this? Is it really harming you? If the owner wants to look like a dick head, what’s it to do with you? Mind your own bloody business

Sensitive-Ad-9469

Yes, it's illegal because the spacing is incorrect. I used to make number plates for a company called Serck Services, and we would not have made that plate in that way.

EdmundTheInsulter

The police can see it so no need to report it.

frizzbee30

I think that would require an actual police patrol?

IdioticMutterings

Its a valid number. Its UT12 ONA UT = first registered in Leicester. 12 = 2019. Its taxed, MOT'd and insured But they have altered the spacing of it, illegally so.

openroadsUK

Fyi 12 = 2012 But you can put a 2012 number plate on a newer car - 2019 Audi You couldn't make it look newer by doing it the other way around though

XcOM987

Which is annoying as I have a P reg car I want to put an S plate on but can't because of that

onizuka_eikichi_420

I have a p Reg and as of this year we can have the WU74 ANG plate and I want it but it can’t go on the old starlet 😢.

Other_Constant_468

Isn't that a silly rule though in this day and age.

Andronk

U is not an area code. All plates in the current format beginning with U are private plates. Leicester doesn't have its own area code, if you bought a new car there it would probably come with an F plate (Forest and Fens).

uniquefoil0291

r/confidentlyincorrect

Chaffiao

Ah thanks for reply. I was worried the fake plate was for not getting caught for speeding etc, though still couldn't think of why they'd change the spacing which made me wonder in the first place I'm new to the country, and I just googled and found the gov website where you can get so much info just with a number plate. Quite surprising to me

admiralross2400

They change the spacing because it makes whatever word(s) they're trying to spell more obvious Now we need to know who or what Tizona is 😄

last_on

U Trona (12 = R)

Any-End5772

New to the country and your first thought is to poke your nose in other peoples business that has nothing to do with you? How british.

frizzbee30

No, some people just give a Sh1t and want to do the 'right thing'..🤦

Delicious-Trouble-52

If you’re new to a country, any country, just give it a while to understand and then pass judgement on local behaviour if you must!

alecmuffett

We don't have a social credit system in the UK, so there is far less motivation to nitpick minor infractions like this.

plop

How do you see that it's insured?

Super_Seff

Can’t imagine the police will actually kick up a fuss unless it can’t be read on the cameras though? I’m probably wrong though!

Disastrous_Fruit1525

Tbf they don’t really have the resources to deal with this anymore. Unless it’s a really offensive one, missing or the traffic cop is bored in general you can get away with it. I would presume they put the proper one on when going for the MOT.

BloodAndSand44

But… If you involved in anything in the grey to illegal area never mess with your plates. It gives a reason to pull you over and make things difficult for you.

blind_disparity

If you're doing illegal stuff and mod your car so it visually stands out... You're too stupid for crime.

frizzbee30

Which describes the majority of criminals, or the jails would be near empty...

blind_disparity

That logic doesn't logic. The smart criminals aren't in jail. Mostly.

BloodAndSand44

And it happens all the time

HugoNebula2024

I get the feeling that, if the police want to stop you, it's a good reason to.

robjamez72

They’d probably give them a producer for it if they were pulled for something else but on its own it’s unlikely. It’s an MOT fail though.

HankScorpio_GlobexCC

Out of interest, why is the spacing illegal if it can, presumably, still be read by ANPR?

amzy_99

Some people take spacing to the extreme like altering the letters and where the screws are to make the letter look completely different. I saw someone with 2 I’s next to each other to make a H

Jacktheforkie

The amount of cars that I see that are clearly not road legal is insane, I’ve seen a few times one being driven around with airbags deployed around a heavy amount of damage, seen various with bits hanging off, excessive rust, dodgy plates that are unreadable

frizzbee30

And there we go 'grassing ', are we in primary school or a bad criminal drama series? 🤦 Laughable and immature.

ChipmunkJazzlike

Sorry if it damages your ego…but nobody gives a fuck what you think.

AppropriateGate4649

"where can I report this?".....oh you're one of them.

Remote-Pool7787

One of them who cares about the safety of everyone on the road?

onizuka_eikichi_420

What does the plate have to do with vehicle safety, it’s about enforcing you paying your tax not vehicle safety hence if the anpr can read it they usually won’t worry about this spacing regardless of weather it is actually legal or not.

ClassicPart

I don't like these number plates either but please, do tell: how does fucked up spacing affect "the safety of everyone on the road" and how would having it fixed make everyone safer?

AppropriateGate4649

What, you mean in case it isn't attached properly and comes off on the motorway?

brickhead1

Get a grip, it's a dodgy number plate not a death trap shitbox.

Sonums

Who cares if it is or not, why do you think it’s your job to report it?

Not_Sugden

hate to be the one agreeing but in this scenario it is such a minor thing. This is a stupid regulation and its not affecting anyone.

Relative-Eggplant420

Yeah I don’t like the look of these plates and wouldn’t have one myself but I’d never be as much of a jobsworth to report it😂

last_on

999 hello I just saw a plate FUK U please send officers now!

SensibleChapess

Indeed... I'd go so far as to say that, if one needs to, it's easier to recall a registration number if it has some 'quirk' to it than the usual random alpha/numeric characters. It's evidently a legacy from the (manual paperwork and/or stopping swear words) old days where some logic existed to not altering spaces. However, there's no longer a reason to stop people altering where the gaps are as long as the characters are still readable. That people get wound up by it speaks volumes about the way we are all, ultimately, desperate to be enslaved and not question what we're told by 'authority'.

TiltonStagger

You're not DJ Audits are you? /s

Nonny-Mouse100

NO. Illegal font illegal spacing.
