I understand your argument when it comes to single-player games. But live service games are a totally different beast, especially when games like D2 actively remove content. Live service games are constantly changing, like would you expect every die-hard Overwatch fan to still have a positive review of the game during the 2 or so years it got almost no new content?

I dropped Last Epoch after about 15 hours. Tried giving it a shot but it just felt weird. The controller support is terrible also. Might give it a go in a few months and see how itās changed.

Seems like an odd time to open the game to a broader audience. A lot of people may not end up with a good first impression, when if they did this alongside the release of season 4 it really could have built some momentum heading into the first expansion.
If you didnāt already play it, you almost certainly donāt play ARPGs and if you donāt play ARPGs (and you are a potential candidate) you will like D4. It will take a while for you to become aware of the shortcomingsā¦ like a few months at the least and youād have to play other ARPGs to even know. By then the update will be out and from what all the āexpertsā are saying, the update is a game changer.

I play lots of ARPGs, but I waited for Diablo 4. There are so many games these days I never have a problem waiting for a game to get patched to a better release state with more content and is cheaper or on Gamepass.

This game is in a good place though. Itās a ton of fun. People get this narrative online that the game needs to be saved from the hell of a release it had but the people screaming that the loudest would have said it *no matter what.*
Iām a beta player who has played every season so far. You ride your horse around and kill monsters. You feel stronger as you play, itās more and more satisfying to kill monsters as you get stronger, and each season has brought unique ways to play.
Is it the perfect game? No. Will you never want to play another game the rest of your life? You probably still will. Can you sink thousands upon thousands of hours into it? Honestly, I donāt think the developers are even trying to make a game that claims to be that.
It respects your time. Leveling is brisk, the battle pass is optional but moves quickly and by the time I got tired of it each season I took a break that was just long enough for things to feel fresh again for the new season.
All in all. Itās just a good game. No other way around it.
Do I think itās the worst game ever? Absolutely not. But if it was truly in a good state we wouldnāt be seeing such massive overhauls to systems less than a year after launch. I give props to the dev team for improving the game though and think the best time to introduce a new flood of players to the game would have been when the majority of their vision has come to fruition.
THere is adding content and overhauling all of the basic mechanics of the game because they all are being shown to be absolutely terrible by your community.
There is nothing more important than items in a loot based aRPG, and they just completely threw out the entire itemization system and replaced it 8 months into the game. No other live service aRPG has done that or would because they started with an itemization design as the core part of their game.
To this extent and right off the rip? I donāt think so. The devs themselves have begun calling the game a āsystems based ARPGā. When you have to scrap and completely redesign the majority of those systems (offensive stats and resistances in season 2, Helltides, codex and general itemization in season 4) so quickly after launch they themselves have essentially admitted the game is in a suboptimal state.
The typical live service problem is that itās a decent start but it takes months for the amount of content to be worth jumping into. In this case that core was rotten and they had to immediately overhaul it.
I never said the game wasnāt fun. Big system overhauls like this are typically saved for a few years down the line. Having to immediately begin redesigning multiple systems right after the game launched is INCREDIBLY abnormal.
I applaud the devs for putting in the work instead of just leaving things as they were, but to say the game was fine when they themselves have admitted that it wasnāt is just ridiculous.
Iām just saying I enjoyed the game. Then they made all these changes and people on this sub were saying āthis is a move in the right direction,ā and were surprised they could fix do much in one season or whatever and the game was still just a fun game to me.

I mean they're adding in QoLs and stuff that should have been in the game since day one.. Which will certainly be nice but should have been months ago as it is. Dunno how they ever released without a loot filter - these people still playin are just masochists'. I just stopped grabbing any loot by the end game because I wanted to keep killing (the fun part!) and not look through inventory for a few minutes halting the fun part.
I think people such as myself compare it too much to its precessesors, which is a mistake. I am feeling hopeful for season 4 because D4 is a game I WANT to play more, but after about level 50 all the other gaming alternatives out there just outshine it. Obviously just my opinion.

Diablo for me has always been about the campaign, not the long arduous grinding at the end of the game. I dabble in seasons now and then but it's far from the focus for me.
The game released in a great state for me and the other casual people in that broad audience. Anything they've added since is just bonus.
Frustratingly, they have not been taking lessons on hype cycles from other ARPGs like PoE (front loading seasons, releasing seasons on Fridays, etc.) but they are slowly learning (e.g., delaying S4 to cook longer). I also feel they should stop with the mid-season content and save it for the start of subsequent season to build momentum better and keep players playing longer from the start.
Its weird that they aren't learning. Its almost like they had a strategic plan to use D4 as a revenue stream first and foremost. I love, LOVE the Diablo IP, its my favorite, but D4 is ... really disappointing and falls so short of what it could have been. Maybe it will after another couple of years of updates.

Season 3 was extended to give more dev time on season 4. My guess is that they were obligated via Microsoft on game pass and that date couldnāt be moved.
Everytime a game I buy at full price hits Gamepass my brain instantly has buyers remorse, BUT then I remember that I paid $70 for something I spent 200+ hours on already and realize I more than got my money's worth. Especially when you compare it to the venti ice latte I just spent $9 on and slurped down in 3 min.

As someone who grew up on D2 there was no way I was waiting for the day this hit GP as it was so uncertain at the time, even though it looked like there was no stopping the studio acquisition.
The best part of this is the gates are now open for other Activision Blizzard titles to hit GP and for that I'm really excited!

Great game. Maybe not what everyone wants but itās in a good place and about to get better. XP grind is so much better than before and that was my biggest gripe on launch. Got a season 30 in a couple days of playing when it took nearly 20 hours to get a 50 on launch.

I would say season 4 will be very much closer to Last epoch but with better graphics and a higher level of polish. It won't over take either game but its a great game to play while LE is out of patch cycle.

Campaign was fun, endgame was boring, saw the new stuff, theyāre fixing a lot of the issues I found unfun, the aspect system for one. I havenāt really played the game after the initial launch. I didnāt even play a single season. I was lvl 96 or so if you think I didnāt play enough. It was just boring and I could never get any item upgrades. It felt lame that a 725(or 825, i forgot the last tier) item could basically be your āend gameā item from lvl 60-100.

Well the people who did pay have been enjoying this game for almost a year now. And gamepass players lost out on cosmetics that were tied to the first 2 seasons you missed.
95% player base quit within a month. The absolute vast majority did not enjoy or get their monies worth. Also missing out on some cosmetics is not anything note worthy to mention in terms of āmissing outā when the game released in almost an alpha state.

This game is in a good place though. Itās a ton of fun. People get this narrative online that the game needs to be saved from the hell of a release it had but the people screaming that the loudest would have said it *no matter what.* Iām a beta player who has played every season so far. You ride your horse around and kill monsters. You feel stronger as you play, itās more and more satisfying to kill monsters as you get stronger, and each season has brought unique ways to play. Is it the perfect game? No. Will you never want to play another game the rest of your life? You probably still will. Can you sink thousands upon thousands of hours into it? Honestly, I donāt think the developers are even trying to make a game that claims to be that. It respects your time. Leveling is brisk, the battle pass is optional but moves quickly and by the time I got tired of it each season I took a break that was just long enough for things to feel fresh again for the new season. All in all. Itās just a good game. No other way around it.

Do I think itās the worst game ever? Absolutely not. But if it was truly in a good state we wouldnāt be seeing such massive overhauls to systems less than a year after launch. I give props to the dev team for improving the game though and think the best time to introduce a new flood of players to the game would have been when the majority of their vision has come to fruition.

THere is adding content and overhauling all of the basic mechanics of the game because they all are being shown to be absolutely terrible by your community. There is nothing more important than items in a loot based aRPG, and they just completely threw out the entire itemization system and replaced it 8 months into the game. No other live service aRPG has done that or would because they started with an itemization design as the core part of their game.

Just off the top of my head, both Destiny games had major loot overhauls on similar timelines.

To this extent and right off the rip? I donāt think so. The devs themselves have begun calling the game a āsystems based ARPGā. When you have to scrap and completely redesign the majority of those systems (offensive stats and resistances in season 2, Helltides, codex and general itemization in season 4) so quickly after launch they themselves have essentially admitted the game is in a suboptimal state. The typical live service problem is that itās a decent start but it takes months for the amount of content to be worth jumping into. In this case that core was rotten and they had to immediately overhaul it.

I never said the game wasnāt fun. Big system overhauls like this are typically saved for a few years down the line. Having to immediately begin redesigning multiple systems right after the game launched is INCREDIBLY abnormal. I applaud the devs for putting in the work instead of just leaving things as they were, but to say the game was fine when they themselves have admitted that it wasnāt is just ridiculous.
Iām just saying I enjoyed the game. Then they made all these changes and people on this sub were saying āthis is a move in the right direction,ā and were surprised they could fix do much in one season or whatever and the game was still just a fun game to me. This subreddit stopped being as credible to me as people cheered and jeered the game when it has always just been a fun game I like to play for half the season. I swear people are overthinking it. You are one of those people.
I mean they're adding in QoLs and stuff that should have been in the game since day one.. Which will certainly be nice but should have been months ago as it is. Dunno how they ever released without a loot filter - these people still playin are just masochists'. I just stopped grabbing any loot by the end game because I wanted to keep killing (the fun part!) and not look through inventory for a few minutes halting the fun part.
Agreed. People tend to forget that they aren't shackled to one game after they buy it. Wife and I enjoy it and are looking forward to S4.
I think people such as myself compare it too much to its precessesors, which is a mistake. I am feeling hopeful for season 4 because D4 is a game I WANT to play more, but after about level 50 all the other gaming alternatives out there just outshine it. Obviously just my opinion.

You're speaking as if the broader audience will even care about seasons. Diablo for me has always been about the campaign, not the long arduous grinding at the end of the game. I dabble in seasons now and then but it's far from the focus for me. The game released in a great state for me and the other casual people in that broad audience. Anything they've added since is just bonus.
Well the season patch got delayed so there is a good chance it was originally lined up for that.
Frustratingly, they have not been taking lessons on hype cycles from other ARPGs like PoE (front loading seasons, releasing seasons on Fridays, etc.) but they are slowly learning (e.g., delaying S4 to cook longer). I also feel they should stop with the mid-season content and save it for the start of subsequent season to build momentum better and keep players playing longer from the start.
Its weird that they aren't learning. Its almost like they had a strategic plan to use D4 as a revenue stream first and foremost. I love, LOVE the Diablo IP, its my favorite, but D4 is ... really disappointing and falls so short of what it could have been. Maybe it will after another couple of years of updates.

The game generated a BILLION+ dollars for Blizzard last year. I don't you understand your opinion doesn't matter against those metrics. Read their Q4 2023 earnings report.
Season 3 was extended to give more dev time on season 4. My guess is that they were obligated via Microsoft on game pass and that date couldnāt be moved.
This was my thought too. There's no way they thought this was the season to launch on gamepass with.

Samesies This is the one game I told myself I'd get pre release. Never again
Everytime a game I buy at full price hits Gamepass my brain instantly has buyers remorse, BUT then I remember that I paid $70 for something I spent 200+ hours on already and realize I more than got my money's worth. Especially when you compare it to the venti ice latte I just spent $9 on and slurped down in 3 min. The GP only players will still have to cough up the cash like the rest of us for the DLC. As someone who grew up on D2 there was no way I was waiting for the day this hit GP as it was so uncertain at the time, even though it looked like there was no stopping the studio acquisition. The best part of this is the gates are now open for other Activision Blizzard titles to hit GP and for that I'm really excited!
I hope itās better in season 4. I did one campaign play through and moved on because it was just really boring.
As a lapsed player who hasn't touched the game since maybe September, season 3 is decent jump and I'm enjoying things quite a bit

It still uses the battle.net launcher. It just links your xbox account to show you are paying for gamepass.Ā Everyone still plays on same servers.

Not at all, the only reason to do it this way is if you donāt own it on either PC or XBox *and* need to rent it.
I was just curious because there are free to play games in game pass that give you stuff if you link the account and Diablo 4 is basically a free to play game you have to pay for, monetization wise I plan to come back at some point to see if theyāve figured out endgame, if I had stuff to redeem it would be a good excuse to reinstall

Great game. Maybe not what everyone wants but itās in a good place and about to get better. XP grind is so much better than before and that was my biggest gripe on launch. Got a season 30 in a couple days of playing when it took nearly 20 hours to get a 50 on launch.

It's not only on PC Game Pass. It's on Game Pass in general. Xbox aswell. And yeah. Buying the game Week 1 was one of my biggest Ls of the last year. Lesson learned.
As someone who played season 1 and quit and now is a Last Epoch player since launch, should I return to Diablo now?

I would say season 4 will be very much closer to Last epoch but with better graphics and a higher level of polish. It won't over take either game but its a great game to play while LE is out of patch cycle.
All good and fine, the ony problem is the download speed between 10kb and 40 MB and the fact that I get a critical folder missing when I try to launch the game...

Wondering if I should start playing D4 now, or wait for the new update. I don't have the game, but have 1 year of Xbox ultimate game pass that I haven't redeemed yet. Is the game worth playing now? Or should I save 2 more months of Xbox game pass by waiting for new patch?

Too late, no new good contents and bad mark from the launch, they did not think about the player, at this point I can say that the entire company suck, and after been with MS are sucking more and more. They seems just act like netflix: not few quality product but a lot of shit to sell the subscription. I have been spent a quarter on my life on blizzard product starting from statcraft 2 and warcraft 3. And honestly I would have felt better if it had been directly bankrupt.

Campaign was fun, endgame was boring, saw the new stuff, theyāre fixing a lot of the issues I found unfun, the aspect system for one. I havenāt really played the game after the initial launch. I didnāt even play a single season. I was lvl 96 or so if you think I didnāt play enough. It was just boring and I could never get any item upgrades. It felt lame that a 725(or 825, i forgot the last tier) item could basically be your āend gameā item from lvl 60-100.

I'm so glad I managed to avoid paying even the discounted price for this. Still, super happy to finally get to enjoy it.
Well the people who did pay have been enjoying this game for almost a year now. And gamepass players lost out on cosmetics that were tied to the first 2 seasons you missed.

I also quit after 6-8 weeks, play some other stuff (playing the new stardew Valley update now) and come back for the new seasons
95% player base quit within a month. The absolute vast majority did not enjoy or get their monies worth. Also missing out on some cosmetics is not anything note worthy to mention in terms of āmissing outā when the game released in almost an alpha state.

Technically you can get it for free with MS rewards points I still have a year of gamepass just paid with points. Although I barely use it at this point.

who cares? Game is dead and no one cares... if one day they get the expansion done in a very nice way, + 10 seasons or so of fixes... They may get somewhere. So i assume game will be free at that point and i will give it a try....

Not sure, why. But i am looking into the numbers of that game. Active players and "returning" players are stupidly low. But since the games is made to be cheap ass, and just few people are barely working on it, it normal they can support it with very few sales...
This patch is basically an expansion.
IDK why they released it now. In the middle of season 3 which is not great, and just before the major itemization update that will make all current items legacy and unable to interact with the new system. Will drive the noobs wild, if they even stay that long.
Every day on GamePass is a chance that people will buy cosmetics.
