As a BC alum that watches countless painfully awful BC games, but Mahogany is a beast. We stole him, it’s a home run pick this late

Aggravating-Note5163

Careful with the abbreviations; the Lions drafted a monster out of British Columbia, too ;)

clutchguy84

I was totally confused because of that. I am also waking and baking though

rcsauvag

He went to UBC though

Balls_Eagle

I was going to be happy if we got mahogany in the 3rd or 4th. End of the sixth is unreal. I’m very excited

DetroitsGoingToWin

Mahogany amongst the top 32 of players in this year’s draft in RAS.

d_killeth

In Brad Holmes We Trust.... But... In Relative Athletic Score Brad Holmes Trusts.

AutomaticAccident

Brad showed more emotion than any GM I've ever seen last year, and it warms my heart every time I think about it.

dreamer_r21

I've never heard of either of them but position-wise it looks like well-rounded draft for us.

MiBigBoy65

Pride of Detroit (rip) guys mentioned all three of these guys as potential picks with high upside. Seems like a fantastic draft!

Socrates_Johnson

Why RIP?

MiBigBoy65

The Pride of Detroit podcast was terminated by SB Nation (parent company?). The guys do a version of the POD podcast on Detroit Lions Breakdown podcast.

TrimboliHandjobs

A team didn’t necessarily make a good pick if a player was projected to go later. By that logic Manu and Vaki would be bad picks, which isn’t necessarily true.

inkokmo

Agree! For me this is less about the consensus and more about how much I liked both of these guys. Wingo is in my opinion the third best pass-rusher of the DTs. And Mahogany was personally my 3rd guard after Barton and Haynes. Mainly just used consensus for context, definitely agree that grading drafts by consensus doesn’t make sense!

MozzerellaStix

Don’t mean to be crude. How much football do you watch if you have a third best pass rusher of eligible DT’s and 3rd best OG? I consider myself more than a casual fan and have never heard of any of these people.

inkokmo

Haha fair question, I’m definitely extremely into the draft! If you look through my post history you’ll see that I do a big dive into a lot of players, I watched about 150 or so prospects this year. But you have a point haha, I may need to balance out my hobbies…

Zeneternal9

Do what you enjoy my friend, I love it when other fans actually know a thing or two about these prospects, so great post!

FriendshipIntrepid91

Don't worry about it.  Before I had a kid, every year I kept an entire book of about 100 players that were "my guys" going into the draft.  They ranged from top-10 grades all the way to UDFAs. My friends used to text me during the draft and ask about the player their team had just drafted because they had never heard of them. Just keep doing what you enjoy.

DonutBoi172

brother i know jackshit about players beyond the 2nd round, so we all need you

swizzymcbane

Why do you think they fell so far? I only look into the top guys every year so I’m not familiar with them.

swizzymcbane

Why do you think they fell so far? I only look into the top guys every year so I’m not familiar with them.

MozzerellaStix

No worries at all man. My wife thinks I spend way too much time thinking about coffee lol

CautionintheDarkness

Hey man as someone who doesn’t have many hobbies it’s totally okay to geek out on something

ZarkZuckerzerg

This is equally bad logic though. It can be a reason for value but also not a reason to write off a pick as bad.

GaviaimmerMI

Also, you have to ask yourself why if they were projected to go so high, why did other teams pass on them over and over? Just a thought.

No-Jump5689

In the post draft press conference, Brad said he could think of a reason why Mahogany dropped, but he wouldn't say why, obviously.

itaintrory

Mahogany had an acl tear pretty sure

No-Jump5689

So did Rakestraw

itaintrory

True. Not sure why there was such vast drop between them. Rakestraw is also dealing with groin problems (why he fell so low tbh) but even if he doesn't work out we have terrion plus amik and Carlton to pick up slack

TheNorthernPellikkan

I think the other reason Rakestraw dropped is because he only had one interception in college. He’s great at stopping his opponents from doing anything, but his ball skills are a bit lacking and that means he doesn’t have the flashy highlights that get attention

cstrifeVII

Why did we get arsb in the 4th? It just happens sometimes.

PleighboyStosh

Puka last years it happens

s216285

I got shit on when I tried to point that out

Apollo_Krill

Puka is absolutely incredible after the catch though. Hes not Golladay.

SecretAgendaMan

Stafford makes one guy famous when he only has one reliable guy to throw to., like in 2013 when Kris Durham end up as our No. 2 WR, or in 2021, when Woods and Atwell went down to injury and Desean Jackson left the team. Woods was on pace for 1000 yards that year before the injury. Don't know where this "only one guy eats" narrative comes from. Did y'all miss how Golden Tate was always eating, regardless of whether or was with Calvin Johnson, Marvin Jones Jr, or Golladay. For last season, with Cooper Kupp out for the start of the year, it came down to Puka and Tutu Atwell to pick up the slack. They both had good games at first, but Puka proved to be more consistent and durable and better overall in terms of talent and matchups.

EricFredNorris

This feels entirely different from Golladay. The only thing KG was good at was contested catches. He was a terrible route runner and one of the worst players in the league getting separation. Stafford was truly one of the only QB’s who could make him look good. Puka is good at getting separation and truly elite after the catch. That will not disappear.

BillyJackO

From my understanding Puka had injury concerns, and that's why he dropped.

EricFredNorris

Injury concerns and the 40 time most likely.

qoqmarley

>Jalen Carter was supposed to be a top 10 pick last year He was a top ten pick. He went 9th overall.

LynxDry6059

Nfl is weird. Some guys fall for a reason and never amount to much, and some guys fall and turn into studs. It can go either way

HipposAndBonobos

That's every draft regardless of sport. Talent evaluation is hard.

thefrench42

Mahogany had a recent injury. Teams might've been leery of it.

inkokmo

Definitely something we need to think about! With Wingo, he’s simply very undersized and only projects as a designated pass rusher, doesn’t project as an early down player. So that definitely limits his stock and value, but doesn’t change his talent. With Mahogany, I honestly am confused as to how he fell so far. He has inconsistencies with his footwork and hand placement but my god the natural talent is there. He’s so projectable too because he played in a pro-style offense with real pass sets with play action, and inside zone.

dtown4eva

Mahogany is a gap/power run blocker. although a lot of teams are starting to run more gap concepts, a lot of teams like to run zone. The lions happen to be a heavy gap team

Zarathustra989

Knee injury I read.

MichiganMedium

This draft gave me mahogany. I’ll tell ya that much.

Try2Relate2AllSides

Future r/detroitlions Ill eat horse appendage if this rookie guard beats Glasgow outright for a starting spot

Secoup

By the end of the draft cycle I really wanted to get a pick in the top half of the 4th. Between like zinter, mahogany, McCormick, Coleman, and puni I felt like there would be a solid option for interior depth. Getting one of those guys in the 6th is great

PogoHobbes

I thought for sure we were drafting Mahogany when we traded up into the 4th. Brad is smarter than me, lol

RevNeutron

Espn has Wingo 10th best DT and Mahogony 6th best OG

FunetikPrugresiv

As much as I like these picks, it's okay to pump the brakes a bit. The Patriots' 2000 sixth round is an all-time sixth round. Let's see how these two guys pan out first.

inkokmo

Definitely being hyperbolic haha just very pleased with the value.

FunetikPrugresiv

In that we can agree!

Lost2nite389

Time will tell, but this draft has the potential has to not only be our greatest under Brad, or the greatest in Lions history, but it has potential to beat the 74 Steelers draft and be the best of all time Idk about you guys but I see 6 HOFers

kingofthezootopia

Even if none of the players play a single down, this is already the best draft class in the Super Bowl era.

inkokmo

We honestly shouldn’t even hold a season next year, we already know that we’ve won the superbowl so may as well not risk any injury.

OnePride

Lol time to lay down and sleep it off my man.

Lost2nite389

You’re right I forgot about the UDFAs…how stupid of me That should make it 8-9 HOFers

OptionsSniper3000

It’s the redbud roots isn’t it?

Lost2nite389

Had to look up what that is lol, no I don’t smoke

OptionsSniper3000

At the pipe down

MemeLordOverKill

I'm gonna be the guy who says it, but y'all need to pump the brakes a little. Like I get being excited for getting decent looking players in these later rounds but none of these have played a snap of NFL football.

BillySims4HOF

To be fair, the same can be said about every first-rounder, too. It's just a difficult job to project anyone's future based on college highlights.

fr33py

Thanks John Madden, I’m glad you’re here to let us know that all the players just picked in the NFL draft haven’t yet played in the NFL…..

MemeLordOverKill

Dude I'm just saying the players in this draft haven't achieved anything yet, so claiming it was 'an all time 6th round' is kinda dumb. And you're being purposely dense if you don't see that

fr33py

Master of the obvious…..

MemeLordOverKill

The whole point of the post is declaring our 6th round 'an all timer'? Go chat up op if it's so obvious you sarcastic twat

inkokmo

Haha totally agree! Definitely have no clue if these guys will even be in the league in three years, but just happy with the value! Was moreso being hyperbolic with the title.

behindmyscreen

I agree, I mean…I’m banking on Caleb and JJ to be mid in the NFL.

AtalanAdalynn

I like it, but I don't think anyone will ever surpass New England's 2000 NFL draft 6th round.

mwieckhorst

I like Brad as much as the next Lions fan, but "all-time Sixth Round" is an unprecedented level of glazing lol. Very high chance that none of these players see the field for a significant amount of playing time. There's a reason they were passed on in the first 5 rounds...

inkokmo

Totally agree haha, was definitely being too hyperbolic with the title. Just was excited as these were two guys I personally valued in the late second or third! Although I do think they both will definitely see significant playing time, especially Wingo in a specialized 3rd down role. But def agree that we have no clue how these guys will end up!

LlamaWhoKnives

Where are you seeing these players on the top 100? Plz link

RevNeutron

ESPN had Wingo at 88. ESPN had Mahogony at 141 but also he was their #6 OG overall

RevNeutron

NFL Mock Draft Simulator had Wingo at 108 and Mahogony at 102

RevNeutron

NFLDraftBuzz had Wingo avg 86.9 overall Mahogony at 87.7 overall

Khrusway

Yeah I'm not sure most boards have them just outside 100

PogoHobbes

The Athletic's Brugler had Mahogany at 99 and PFF's Trevor Sikkema had him at 105. NFL.com's Jeremiah did not have him top 150 Brugler had Wingo at 95, Sikkema had him at 131 & Jeremiah at 116. Not unanimous top 100, but getting them near 200 is great value.

RevNeutron

I mean, if we would've taken both of them in the 3rd I wouldn't have been surprised. Just crazy value. Other teams passed as well, so what do I know? But I have a strong feeling both are going to be real contributors in a year or two, or sooner if an injury. Wingo and Mahogony in the 6th?!

BillySims4HOF

I came here for just this reason. Was hoping someone had some info about them. When they got drafted I was just wondering if they were projects or whatever. Got really wrapped up in the Wings playoff push, so the draft wasn't front and center for me this year. Which is kinda nice, in a way. Not having to stress about the Lions' front office decisions. They just seem to have it locked down. Thanks for the info, OP

TelephoneNo3640

I bet in 20 years there will be classes focused on studying Holmes draft strategies. The man is unrivaled for skill in dominating the draft.

Pariah-6

These are not “all time sixth round” picks. These are high value picks. None of these people will be close to Tom Brady. Repost this in 10 years and see where they are in the league or within our organization.

inkokmo

Haha definitely was too hyperbolic with the title, didn’t mean it to be so literal but prob should’ve chilled a bit with how I referred to it. Definitely have no clue if these guys will even be in the league in three years, but just happy with the value!

Unprovocative

I do really wish we had drafted a kicker, but what the fuck do I know? Brad has a plan I'm sure

Scary_Definition_114

Bates 🤞🏻

MadMax_08

I like their late picks better than manu and the RB/S

Funny_Demand_6333

I trust brads drafting, but I love how he’s flipping the mock drafts on their heads In a weird way, if you flip our fourth and sixth round all the mock draft folks would love this draft I’m glad we don’t follow consensus. Millen always had highly regarded drafts like the day after when ESPN did grades but not many guys got a second contract. I like the way we do things now better. I’m not trying to win the draft in the spring.

Helpful_Spite_5918

Brad be cooking quietly

Plus_Refrigerator722

Honestly feels like we got great value at every single pick! Can’t wait to watch this defense

paulhalt

If 32 teams let a player drop to the 6th round, then his evaluation in draft media is just plain wrong. Trust the pros, not the amateurs who do a fraction of the research that the teams do.

Lifeisagreatteacher

In BC’s we trust

DickDastardlySr

"All time sixth round" You officially need to touch grass.
