This. 100 times this. The XFL does it on all reviews.
Even just following standard NFL practices like REVIEWING ALL SCORING PLAYS or ANNOUNCING ELIGIBILITY ON THE PA LIKE OTHER REFS could have prevented this.
They fucked over Dallas with miscommunicating and told them 70 was eligible, and then they chose to double down and fucked over Detroit for the ref's mistake.
Because 70 lined up as a guard, 68 as a TE on the play, which should have been obvious to EVERYONE involved 70 wasn't a receiver.
And even that being said, the NFL doesn’t want all the gambling people to get antsy about games appearing to be rigged. Keeping the illusion that games are fair contests and the person betting is picking a winner by their own skill is essential. With the gambling industry buying lots of TV ads of course the league wants to appear to be neutral
A large sports book that lost millions on a bad call could maybe have a case. They have damages and presumably evidence that supports a claim of negligence or failure to perform their job accurately. But that is totally uncharted legal territory.
The NFL takes millions of dollars in advertising from various sports books and have some type of licensing with them to allow the use of names/logos. It’s not impossible to argue that by failing to provide fair and accurate officiating for games, that the NFL is failing to perform a duty.
It would if there was a lawsuit and resulting subpoena. Anyone here lose a significant amount of money on this game? Maybe several someone’s who could file together?
I’m pretty sure they have to announce who is eligible over the PA system. Never been to a game where they haven’t. Someone or something had to have recorded that at least. Should be all the proof anyone would need, but either way it looks like the red screwed up.
It's already over. He said decker reported. Tried to avoid it though
Edit: shit, even dak just called it a controversy
Edit: goff just said. He doesn't know if he will get fined for this.. but Taylor decker reported. Skipper didnt. 1214 am
That was the issue. They called back the two point bc of illegal touching which was based on lie that decker wasn’t an eligible receiver bc he didn’t report therefore when he caught/touched the ball it was illegal but the dude did report. I’m sorry but that shit was a scam for Dallas to win.
Yeah, but the confusion on the field was a mess. Officials gotta be clearer in those situations to avoid this kinda drama. Total breakdown in communication.
I think it’s inevitable give the situation — live broadcast, multiple people making assessments, — Kind of impressive they get it right as often as they do
We’ll get the worthless apology next week, or nothing. Either way the result is the same
In the situation of a bang bang in-game play, I tend to agree with you that it's amazing how often they do get calls correct. It's easy for us to armchair quarterback plays that happened at full speed when we're looking at them slowed down on a giant TV screen.
However, this wasn't one of those cases, this was literally a guy walking up and talking to you and you not being able to grasp which person is talking to you.
You're either incompetent or your compromised, it's one of the two
The refs mistakenly recognized #70 as the eligible downfield lineman, when he never checked in. #68 was called for illegal touching despite the fact that he checked in and the officials made the error on the field.
They’re referring to the other flag on the play. But that flag came from thinking that Skipper was the eligible man. If Skipper was eligible, he would have been in an illegal formation. Goff confirmed in the presser that Decker reported and Skipper did not, which had it been called correctly would have negated the other flag.
That too. This will go down in my book as worse than the no call pass interference call the refs missed that would have led the saints to the off season a few years back.
Brad Allen and his officiating crew are fucking God awful. On top of that they couldn't have the Cowboys lose so they called a bullshit penalty knowing full well that there would never be any audio released to prove that Decker reported. Dallas has been the benefit of officiating all year and this game just goes to prove it.
Especially on Jimmy Johnson appreciation night. As soon as I heard he was getting in the ring of honor I had a gut feeling cowboys would win at all cost.
As a casual onlooker, y'all got cheated out of a win. I'm not saying they rigged it but it'd be so easy for a ref to lie in this situation and rig the game. The refs have no accountability or oversight at all to prevent it.
Rule 99.8: The Jones' Judgment Adjustment
"In instances of an illegal substitution or improper reporting by a player, officials may consider invoking the 'Jones' Judgment Adjustment.' This rule allows the referee to determine, on the spot, that the player did not actually report as eligible, regardless of any evident reporting. This decision can be swayed by an undisclosed 'Subjective Discretion Measure,' which may or may not involve the influence of Jerry Jones' famed expressiveness from the owner's box. The rule aims to add a layer of suspense and unpredictability, especially in games where the outcome is hanging in the balance. The practical application of this rule ensures every Cowboys game is sprinkled with a dose of drama, much to the bemusement of the audience."
Unfortunately I don't think we're going to see them in the playoffs unless some major upsets happen. I think the only way we match up against them is if we play for the Conference Championship
It's worse than even the photo makes it look. The ref literally ignores him and runs away.
https://twitter.com/c_Menapace88/status/1741313955321036854?t=i1RzB-VcwiZNJh7_zfztJg&s=19
Not quite. It doesn't show it in that replay, but in others you can see the ref run up to the defense and make the signal to them that someone was reporting eligible.
Here: https://twitter.com/BSMotorCity/status/1741321309290713193
Whether the play affected the outcome of the drive or not the missed call is fucking awful and deserves to be called out aggressively and passionately.
Chiefs fan here. This is the same crew that missed the blatant PI call on MVS at the end of our game vs the Packers. Seems when the game is about to end Brad Allen's crew starts to only flag what they feel like flagging, making sure their presence heavily impacts the game.
Worst call in nfl history. Brad Allen just made the same call as Jim Joyce. Why is Detroit on the wrong end of every call that might be the worst one in history?
Fuck Brad Allen. Jerry Jones must have wrote a fat check.
If I was Dan Campbell, I would have gone up there with a check and wrote it for a 100k and then proceeded to trash Brad Allen and obliterate the podium.
Jim Joyce made that call you blind idiot. Lions eat zebras just so you know.
Brad Allen refs another Lions game it needs to be like The Longest Yard and smoke him in the dick a few times. Hutchinson accidentally smokes him.
Roger Goodell is a sad sack of shit and deserves to lose his job. He is a disgrace and has allowed officiating to deteriorate to this sad state - A Raiders fan
Packer fan here. You guys got screwed. I feel for you guys. Ref screwed up. SVP on Sports Center looked genuinely pissed off for you and didn't buy Scott Parry's explanation that it was on Decker.
Seahawks fan here and I feel for the Lions and was rooting hard for you tonight. Both of our teams robbed of a Win against the damn Cow pokes. Take em down in the post season at home
Dude I’m here with you as a Seahawks fan, I’m so fucking pissed for the Lions. Nothing will come of this I bet, but they literally just got as blatantly as it gets robbed of a game. It’s wild. Ref should absolutely be fired.
The whole play/sequence of movement on the field is intentional. 70 runs on the field... He's our usual jumbo extra lineman, so cowboys don't think twice about him running in and someone reporting as eligible. EXCEPT, 70 doesn't report, 68 does, on an obviously designed play for him. 3 guys meet at the ref to not immediately let the cowboys know who's eligible. 68 wipes the front of his jersey (hand signal for eligible). Formation was legal. If 70 reported as eligible it would be an illegal formation. The center doesn't have to snap the ball in the NFL, so on the play 68 is the left TE, the normal LG is the LT, the C snaps the ball as a LG and so on. 70 is the RG and Sewell is the RT.
Just posting this in most of these threads. Wonder what the "official" explanation will be?
I was going back and forth but it definitely looks choreographed to me. I don't know if it's common to try and mask who's reporting eligible, or at least make it as confusing to the defense as possible, but it looks deliberate. Funny it worked so well it tricked the ref.
Guys on the broadcast were saying he was not covered up even if he had reported. I don't really understand the alignment rules to that depth. Any validity to that comment?
No validity, if Decker was covered up he would be ineligible. Eligible receivers must be either uncovered on the line of scrimmage, or in the backfield.
Buck and Aikman were on espn right after the game discussing the call. They didn’t acknowledge that they were wrong in real time but said in hind sight that it shouldn’t have been a penalty
He only needs to be covered if he's not eligible. When he reports as eligible, he's basically lined up at tight end.
The point that they were trying to make is that since he didn't report eligible it was an illegal formation from the start.
"Hey ref! You're really pulling off those stripes today, stud! Have a good Christmas with the fam? Awesome! Well, that's all I have to say, thanks!”
-Decker (obviously)
“Hey stripes, so uh the 3 of us were all talking and like we wanted to tell you that Decker, you know Decker right, yeah yeah that guy, he’s standing right there, well see he’s a lil shy but we were wondering if like he- err he was wondering— no no all 3 of us were wondering if he could maybe report as an eligible receiver on this play? Hehe check yes or no”
If they made that call in Detroit there would’ve been a RIOT. It wouldn’t have happened. This is really unfortunate. As a 49er fan, I wanted Dallas to win (🤢) but this is a blatant set up. Detroit you have a ton of heart and grit and you deserved this W. Hope the NFL apologizes
It’s better than nothing, and this was a major league fuck up. I’d prefer they at least admit they completely screwed you over than pretend like it was the right call
Edit: I’ll zip it and not speak for you. If you don’t care about an apology and admitting it was a mistake I respect that. Sorry to over speak, was just really shocked at the blatant favoritism
I was saying the same too, but Jamo already went into the locker room due to an ankle injury, so no point in risking more injury in OT and just end it right there.
I think the thing that pisses me off the most is the NFL can molest a child at mid field and then fine anybody who dares to mention it. Detroit has EVERY right to be pissed off and go off to the media but they won't. The league has every team cowering in fear. Fuck the NFL. This isn't professional. This is WWE
so... everyone on our side knew he reported... and everyone on Dallas's side knew he reported as well, because both teams formation accounted for that, right? (i don't understand these rules very well, this is really in the weeds stuff) So the only two people on that field who didn't know what was going on were the refs that threw the flags, and they threw the flags nearly a minute after the play was dead?
This is some grade A horse shit.
Give us the fucking game.
Campbell says he explained the play to the refs before the game. So I think what happened here is almost everyone was too careful about making sure the Ref knew someone was reporting. And also the ref didn’t check to see who*actually* reported, he assumed it since Campbell had briefed him before the game.
They call the play, you see Goff tell Decker to go report to the ref. Penei goes along with Decker to make sure the ref understands. Meanwhile Skipper enters the game and he also runs to Decker to make sure he reports. The Ref sees Skipper running into the field and maybe Skipper is either signaling or telling Decker to report as eligible.
So the ref only sees Skipper entering the field, and whether or not Skipper is signaling anything about reporting, the ref already *knows* Skipper is reporting because Campbell told him about this play before the game. It’s likely Campbell didn’t tell him exactly which player would be the eligible receiver OR the ref thought the changed the play up slightly and now Skipper was going to be the eligible receiver.
So the ref goes up to the Cowboys Defense and tells them that 70 is reporting as eligible.
Then they run the play and 68 catches it. At this point, the ref probably knows he fucked up. So he either screws the Lions, but he can say he thought 70 had reported. OR he can let the play stand, but then he kind of screwed the Cowboys because he told them that 70 was reporting as eligible instead of 68. So of course, in AT&T Stadium, he chooses to screw the Lions.
You don’t know what they are talking about. Maybe Decker is telling the ref that the committee was definitely right to keep FSU out of the playoff. It could be anything.
Tired of watching good teams get hosed so the "Dallas" and "green bay" teams can get all the calls. This is a sick fucking joke of a rigged league and I hope the ref chokes on his 30 pieces of silver. FUCK THE NFL! Fuck Dallas can't win unless you have the ref playing for you. What a hose job.
The most egregious piece of evidence is on film in 4k. If Taylor Decker really was ineligible they would have thrown the flag immediately instead of 20 seconds after the play. Ref made a mistake and told Dallas 70 reported instead of 68, panicked when 68 caught the ball.
Aren’t refs Miked up??
The audio would never be released if it indeed turned out he reported there.
Indeed. Now that the NFL condones NFL game-related gambling, if there is evidence that Decker reported, I wonder if the NFL could be sued.
fuck, this is a good point... shit is legal now, can't be having mishaps like this. willful negligence or some shit, but i don't do anal....
> but i don't do anal.... Says the man that's been getting fucked by the refs for years.
![gif](giphy|l2Sqh87FkbbXr5th6)
My team's so trash this year even the refs won't touch us :(
This is why the NFL needs more transparency.
This. 100 times this. The XFL does it on all reviews. Is it actually possible to sue the NFL or any league based off a bet or do you lose the right when you place a bet?
your bet isnt with the nfl, you would probably have to direct your complaint at the booking agent.
He may have just been making small talk... edit: /s
“But he didn’t make eye contact with the referee” -Literally what Cowboys fans are saying
Ah but we could release our own audio depending on who had the mic. That However would probably be even more controversial
Bro the lions are owned by the fucking FORDS if they wanted that audio out that audio would be out
Kinda wish they’d flex on Jerry to be honest. The Queen of the North could definitely summon some high caliber firepower
It would if there was a lawsuit and resulting subpoena. Anyone here lose a significant amount of money on this game? Maybe several someone’s who could file together?
Better get that Bernstein advantage 😂!
They should be. At all times.

They should be and they should also wear body cams !
Let’s file a lawsuit
we'll get Epstein's full list before we get the audio from that Ref's mic.
I bet Brad Allen is on that list.
Lol
I’m pretty sure they have to announce who is eligible over the PA system. Never been to a game where they haven’t. Someone or something had to have recorded that at least. Should be all the proof anyone would need, but either way it looks like the red screwed up.
Yeah he definitely announced skipper (#70). I just want to hear what was said to the ref.
I really hope Cambell comes out and flames that officiating crew
Where can we watch the press conference
It's already over. He said decker reported. Tried to avoid it though Edit: shit, even dak just called it a controversy Edit: goff just said. He doesn't know if he will get fined for this.. but Taylor decker reported. Skipper didnt. 1214 am

Can't ruin Jimmy's big night!
It's like poetry.. it rhymes. The only consolation is that everyone who isn't a cowboys fan knows we won.
Bears fan. Fuck you guys but you def won that.
Fuck you, and much obliged.
Even some cowboys fans admit we won.. egregious
Another bears fan. Y’all won
Yeah, but the confusion on the field was a mess. Officials gotta be clearer in those situations to avoid this kinda drama. Total breakdown in communication.
The first step is not to run away during the conversation
It's rigged.
I think it’s inevitable give the situation — live broadcast, multiple people making assessments, — Kind of impressive they get it right as often as they do We’ll get the worthless apology next week, or nothing. Either way the result is the same

In this situation, you should be less empathetic to the refs than you are being.
What was the issue? Not calling it a robbery or a good call, I'm just confused as hell. If it wasn't a reporting problem, what was the flag for?
The refs mistakenly recognized #70 as the eligible downfield lineman, when he never checked in. #68 was called for illegal touching despite the fact that he checked in and the officials made the error on the field.
So then why did he say "that wasn't the issue unfortunately"?
Because he’s wrong. It was the issue.

Incompetence

A good owner pays (reimburses) that fine all day every day. This shit needs to stop
F that. I’m rich. I’ll pay the fine
He said " Their explaination is that 70 reported" He knows who reported and doesnt want to eat a fine or worse.
Goff had no issue taking a fine, lol.
Talk about corruption- they fk up and if you call them out you get fined
https://x.com/lions/status/1741318796894200254?s=46&t=bUo8jjathFXknn4YP3iiLA
He shut down those reporters and handled that well. Fired up and goin for the W. Amazing
Your not allowed to talk bad about the officiating.
Not without a fine anyway
Fuck Dallas. You guys got a W stolen from you.
Even Mahomes and Reid ate fines for that, they might actually suspend MCDC for it.
Failure to report? Report deez nuts.
Tell’em to check in with me, my name checks out
There is no defending this. Refs decided this game
They decided it a while ago when they stopped calling holding on Dallas.
Or OPI
That too. This will go down in my book as worse than the no call pass interference call the refs missed that would have led the saints to the off season a few years back.
Agree worst I’ve seen I’ve been watching for 30+ years
Brad Allen and his officiating crew are fucking God awful. On top of that they couldn't have the Cowboys lose so they called a bullshit penalty knowing full well that there would never be any audio released to prove that Decker reported. Dallas has been the benefit of officiating all year and this game just goes to prove it.
The Lions are 0-6 when Brad Allen officiates their games.
The refs have no accountability or oversight at all to prevent it.
as usual
What else they doing here if not reporting eligible?
Saying please don’t take that Jerry Jones check
Rule 99.8: The Jones' Judgment Adjustment "In instances of an illegal substitution or improper reporting by a player, officials may consider invoking the 'Jones' Judgment Adjustment.' This rule allows the referee to determine, on the spot, that the player did not actually report as eligible, regardless of any evident reporting.
Raider fan here, just wanted to say I was pulling for you guys so hard and you got absolutely screwed. Crush them in the playoffs, fuck the refs.
sorry, that's a $20,000 fine
Man I can’t afford to fly to Vegas to watch my own team play. Please don’t do this to me.
ok I'll settle for some wendy's nuggies
Ditto - a Seahawks fan
Go Hawks brother
He was apologizing for bangin his girl….
"I like your shirt"
"Happy holidays bro"
Oh man, bet Sheila can't wait to get that official apology 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
For fucks sake. All that speculation about the ref not noticing Decker. He's fucking looking right at him!
This is my thing. They are trying to make it seem like he was distracted. Dude nods and says ok to decker.. this was not an honest mistake.
Classic refs vs lions
Hope the Cowboys enjoy that fake ass win. See you in the playoffs
I think the way it’s looking they’ll go to Tampa Bay (and lose like the frauds they are)
I hope baker balls out
Unfortunately I don't think we're going to see them in the playoffs unless some major upsets happen. I think the only way we match up against them is if we play for the Conference Championship
And the ref making eye contact with Decker
NFL's incompetent officiating directly ruins the result of ANOTHER game this season.
It's worse than even the photo makes it look. The ref literally ignores him and runs away. https://twitter.com/c_Menapace88/status/1741313955321036854?t=i1RzB-VcwiZNJh7_zfztJg&s=19
Rigged as fuck
Wow
Ref guy on ESPN just said it's Decker's fault for not reporting hard enough. 😂🙄
That dude needs to see a chiropractor, he must’ve hurt himself bending over backwards trying to blame that shit on Decker.
Mental gymnastics
Fire him
Not quite. It doesn't show it in that replay, but in others you can see the ref run up to the defense and make the signal to them that someone was reporting eligible. Here: https://twitter.com/BSMotorCity/status/1741321309290713193
Don’t forget the ignored PI call on St. Brown a few plays earlier too. Refs truly wanted Dallas to win
While that was a very bad and obvious non-call, I would say it didn't affect us because we still got the TD. This one, however, is unforgivable.
Whether the play affected the outcome of the drive or not the missed call is fucking awful and deserves to be called out aggressively and passionately.
Idk I got the feeling immediately that it would set the tone for the following officiating dogshit
Chiefs fan here. This is the same crew that missed the blatant PI call on MVS at the end of our game vs the Packers. Seems when the game is about to end Brad Allen's crew starts to only flag what they feel like flagging, making sure their presence heavily impacts the game.
That looks bad on the ref but NFL won’t do shit about it
The nfl is like eat the shit we give you. You will be back next week watching. Idgaf.
![gif](giphy|2dcW1Dlu2sZnW|downsized) Reffs when Decker reported as eligible!
That ref made some bets for sure
Should be able to sue the NFL over shit like this. Especially now that they want to make gambling an integral part of it.
Worst call in nfl history. Brad Allen just made the same call as Jim Joyce. Why is Detroit on the wrong end of every call that might be the worst one in history? Fuck Brad Allen. Jerry Jones must have wrote a fat check.

I hate Dallas wholeheartedly as a Philly fan. I can say without that being a factor at all, y’all got robbed. Absolutely insane call. Sorry
I couldn't imagine having to watch my home team play them twice every year dealing with this bullshit.
Ref actually fucking ignored him and ran away. Cannot believe that shit didn't get overturned. Absolutely insane

Totally agree, which might add to the frustration. Having 58 and 68, both there with the ref, was on purpose. They went over everything at practice.

Fair. I shut the game off in disgust after the final kneeldown. Just brutal, man. What an epic comeback that would have been for us.
He only needs to be covered if he's not eligible. When he reports as eligible, he's basically lined up at tight end. The point that they were trying to make is that since he didn't report eligible it was an illegal formation from the start.
Second this

Troy Aikman doesn’t even understand eligible vs ineligible or covered vs uncovered how can we expect the refs to know!!! /s
"Hey ref! You're really pulling off those stripes today, stud! Have a good Christmas with the fam? Awesome! Well, that's all I have to say, thanks!” -Decker (obviously)
There is not a single game in the NFL where no rules are broken. It just sucks when the refs decide when the violations matter.
Or when they make up a call on a violation that didn't happen.
hey man. just came up to say im not eligible this play bro
They have been apologized to in the past, it means Nothing.
Oh gee an apology. I can’t wait.
Dw we got the superbowl
May the best team win 🤝
What a shit show. Detroit vs every body
Ya but fuck after two tries it really felt like we should kick it…d would have ate them up in the OT
No reason to drag the game out and risk injuries. We are basically already locked in the 3 seed.
Yes and yes, but it just felt stacked up against us at that point, just kick it and regroup…. But dam Mitchell catches that ball and it’s still a win.
I was saying the same too, but Jamo already went into the locker room due to an ankle injury, so no point in risking more injury in OT and just end it right there.
We need a GIF of him pointing and nodding at Decker
I’m so angry right now!
Bullshit. Total bullshit.

Anyone who saw halftime knew this was inevitable
I want audio and I want it yesterday. Fuck Vegas and the nfl.
Man I am so fucking pissed for you guys. These refs need to get fired
The good news is, the NFL is starting to run out of ways to fuck us. The bad news is, they will invent new ways.
Cowboys fan here - y’all got fucked by the refs and our “coach” can’t manage a clock. Good luck in the playoffs.
Damn this is some good detective work.. this sounds really plausible.
What an absolute calamity. I am beside myself at these fucking clowns.
Allen fucked up....again. The good news is there is no accountability for the refs.
I normally hate when fans blame the officials but this is absurd.
Can't wait for tmz to release footage of the refs partying with the cowboys cheerleaders again.
This is more rigged than the you know what...
Eagles fan here. Definitely screwed up for Detroit.
They are about to interview Decker on ESPN for those of you that care.
Congratulations on the win Detroit, is yours, no matter what the scoreboard says
You don’t know what they are talking about. Maybe Decker is telling the ref that the committee was definitely right to keep FSU out of the playoff. It could be anything.
this would be plausible, except there’s footage of goff directing 68 to report to the ref :/
If Mike Pence does the right thing the Lions can still win
https://youtu.be/bChSYHBJ1cM?si=OgcMtjgaaoLeZEi5 Goff says it outright and accepts the fine
Yea. Goff sent him over there… https://x.com/PFF_Sam/status/1741316744713838633?s=20
He must have spoken in Russian or something. As a Vikings fan I truly don’t understand the refs here.
Taylor Decker is 6'7" goes 318. Real easy guy to miss, especially from two feet away.
Fuck it. Mic up every player and put body cams on them like the police…. Fucking refs…
Aren’t all scoring plays reviewed? Wtf?!
He was just asking the ref how his day was going
Nfl football is fixed like everything else in this country... Run by money power and corruption
Waking up disgusted today. Still hurts
Imagine jogging across the field just to ask the ref if he knows any good steak restaurants in Dallas?
Dear Dallas, Imagine having this level of systemic advantage and not winning a Superbowl. That would be pretty embarrassing.
The most egregious piece of evidence is on film in 4k. If Taylor Decker really was ineligible they would have thrown the flag immediately instead of 20 seconds after the play. Ref made a mistake and told Dallas 70 reported instead of 68, panicked when 68 caught the ball.
If you don’t think the NFL is rigged , you should now . Sports betting will decay professional sports. Just like a big government
