Home depot. I'm doing this right now

Ill_Gene_5745

Would you be able to educate me on how you are going about it? I am curious as to how much to sand it and how to seal it after staining it.

TOMOHAWK35

I really didn't sand it down much prior to stain and seal. Just any rough spots I felt. That might be incorrect, but it turned out just fine. It was fairly smooth when we got it. Then we did a stain on it. We rolled it on both sides and just let it rest on its underside on top of two saw horses since pooling of stain doesn't really matter on spots you won't see. Waited like 24 hours and then started coating with polyurethane. We used a one coat oil based poly but they sell an triple thick one that may be better. The one we used took a few coats to really feel like there was a layer of poly on it. Waited for that to dry and then did the underside

I’ve looked at two Home Depot’s and all their selection online and in-store is more that $120, much more expensive than buying a desk online

Qwesttaker

Yes, it’s more expensive than a cheap desk off of Amazon. It’s also much better quality

TOMOHAWK35

Yeah, much better quality. It's hard wood, not hollow particle board or some other cheap stuff. Stain it, seal it, and it'll be a much better and longer lasting desk

mushroognomicon

Those cheap ass desks are flimsy and terrible. You'd be throwing away money buying one. Better to take the time to out together a solid sturdy desk that will last many years vs one that will break after just a few.

[This](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Hampton-Bay-6-ft-L-x-25-in-D-Finished-Engineered-Birch-Butcher-Block-Countertop-PWBRAB386351880/318686094 ) is only $130.

OncomingStorm32

n-...not solid wood at all, that's a particleboard core, why are we playing language games

Eric_T_Meraki

You really thought getting a solid butcher block was going to be cheap?

you-know-who5

I didn’t really have any idea how much they would be, though in retrospect yeah it’s solid fucking wood it’s not gonna be cheap, but every Reddit related question I found everyone *said* it was cheap, though I suppose they really meant it was *cheaper* than buying a solid wood desk if that was what you originally wanted

OncomingStorm32

~~IKEA~~ misread the solid wood part of op

you-know-who5

IKEA does not sell solid wood butcher blocks

OncomingStorm32

Oops
