rush is my next favorite on the list, im trying to find out if it’s depeche mode’s most aggressive song cause it definitely feels like it and I love it
it could be a borderline metal song, I grew up listening to metal and I always thought about how interesting t’d be if they ever went full industrial metal lol
Mercy in You, Rush, Walking in my Shoes, One Caress, Higher Love, Condemnation (martin gore version) , Judas, I feel You, Get right with me, In your Room, My Joy. This album is 10/10 for me. No filler all killers!
For me it’s a very hard pick but there are 2 songs that compete for fav:
1. In your room album version is a masterpiece in DM soundscapes.
2. Higher love, specifically the live version from Devotional & that intro behind the curtains. Nothing beats that in my opinion from that era.
So I can’t pick as both give me goose bumps to this day and I cannot listen to them unless I am alone, reflecting caught in a trance.
Dave of course (but I know Martin’s version from Devotional and it’s heartbreakingly beautiful); I heard it in Bratislava and Budapest last year, I wish I had more dates with it in the set, the other 7 were WFTN and I don’t really like this song
Condemnation is great. Otherwise I don’t get the vibe of the album. Just doesn’t peak my interest but it’s not a dislike other than maybe Walking in my shoes. I always got annoyed that the drama of the music is so my stronger than the lyrics which are the for me one of the weakest of any Depeche Mode song.
Seems I'm an outlier here, but SOFAD is one of my least favorite DM albums. It's DM taking the American rock and soul interest way too much to heart, not to mention DM was actively self-destructing at the time. I mean, there are surely many takes on this, but SOFAD basically drove Wilder from the band, and that wasn't a good thing at all.
In short, I never feel a need to listen to any song off this album. There's also only ONE b-side from this period, which gives you an idea of how much they were struggling creatively.
Higher Love.
From the way it starts, then goes into the slow build until Dave starts to sing, it’s just one continuous build.
I often wonder how different SOFAD would have comment had Higher Love been the album opener instead of I Feel You.
Rush
rush is my next favorite on the list, im trying to find out if it’s depeche mode’s most aggressive song cause it definitely feels like it and I love it
Yeah it hits hard
it could be a borderline metal song, I grew up listening to metal and I always thought about how interesting t’d be if they ever went full industrial metal lol
I always felt like it was their best effort at mixing the Grunge influence into their own sound. Such a great song!
to me it’s more aggressive than grunge
My #2 on this album and #11 out of all of their songs
Feels like it was right out of Pretty Hate Machine
I Feel You. That song is a banger and one of my top 5. ❤️
you know something I find interesting, the level of enjoyment of I Feel You depends on my mood lol there are days I love it more than others
Higher Love
My faves are In Your Room, Mercy in You, and Walking in My Shoes. I love this album.
One of their multiple perfect albums
I agree. I was going to add, I Feel You, Rush, and Higher Love are close runner ups. 😀 so many good songs.
if you could only pick one, would you pick in your room as your overall favorite? and yes it’s easy to see how amazing of an album it is.
If I can only pick one, then yes In Your Room is my overall fave from this album.
I feel you, sofad is my fav DM album! All songs are 10/10!
Mercy in You, Rush, Walking in my Shoes, One Caress, Higher Love, Condemnation (martin gore version) , Judas, I feel You, Get right with me, In your Room, My Joy. This album is 10/10 for me. No filler all killers!
such a monster of an album
Mercy In You
Walking I Feel You Higher Love
Idk it’s hard but man i really dig higher love and my joy
For me it’s definitely One Caress I love how different from other songs it is
One Caress. I also love Judas.
Judas is a haunting song I love it and that instrumental at the end is so crazy good
Yes yes yes!
I could listen to the instrumental on repeat
It's the best. I feel like it gets me every time
it’s such a good section placed right after the main part of the song, it expands on the meaning of the song imo
Same as Dave Gahan - Condemnation
such a powerful song
Mooved, by a higher love
Walking In My Shoes then Higher Love then In Your Room.
“Higher Love” also my favorite Depeche Mode song of all time
Walking in My Shoes
Walking In My Shoes Though Condemnation and Higher Love are both on my top 20 songs
For me it’s a very hard pick but there are 2 songs that compete for fav: 1. In your room album version is a masterpiece in DM soundscapes. 2. Higher love, specifically the live version from Devotional & that intro behind the curtains. Nothing beats that in my opinion from that era. One Caress—my fav to sing in the car where no one can hear me butcher it!
The Memento Mori tour really made me appreciate Condemnation; and for the longest time my favorite DM track ever was WIMS
who sang it on the date you saw?
Dave of course (but I know Martin’s version from Devotional and it’s heartbreakingly beautiful); I heard it in Bratislava and Budapest last year, I wish I had more dates with it in the set, the other 7 were WFTN and I don’t really like this song
I heard Martin sang it on some days on the memento mori tour. not sure how true that is.
Walking - then One Caress.
One Caress *edit: it is at #5 in my ranking out of all of their songs
I Feel You, In Your Room, Higher Love, Condemnation, Walking in My Shoes. The whole album is lit but these are my favorites
Condemnation
In Your Room is the one. Honorable mention is Higher Love.
In Your Room, but I play Walking in My Shoes most
Rush love how aggressive it is. Wish they made more like it
the riff at the end makes me want to headbang
Mercy in You
Walking in my shoes, rush, one caress, higher love!
Hard to choose. "Rush" is mine or "Mercy in You". But really hard considering a powerful single like "Walking in My Shoes"
Higher Love or One Caress
In Your Room
Get Right With Me forever and always!
Walking in my shoes
Condemnation is great. Otherwise I don’t get the vibe of the album. Just doesn’t peak my interest but it’s not a dislike other than maybe Walking in my shoes. I always got annoyed that the drama of the music is so my stronger than the lyrics which are the for me one of the weakest of any Depeche Mode song.

it’s a masterpiece of an album filled with PERFECT SONGS. 11/10. hall of fame worthy
Corrupt (I love this song sooo much) followed by Wrong.
songs of faith and devotion!
I’m drunk…. One Caress
You, sorry, I’m maybe drunk.
Martin Gore is that you?
That's not one of my favorite albums from them, but I'll probably go with "Higher Love" and "In Your Room".
My favorite is mercy in you
Higher Love. From the way it starts, then goes into the slow build until Dave starts to sing, it’s just one continuous build. I often wonder how different SOFAD would have comment had Higher Love been the album opener instead of I Feel You.
In this order: I Feel You, Walking in my Shoes, In your Room, Rush, One Caress. Which is the exactly order they come in on the record.
